He still is. He used to be played more like a glass cannon when Hotashi was taking tournaments season 1.
He'd all in, force you to get hit by the blood explosion and then kill you with the mix up.
Now that gameplay seems to be mostly defunct my carefully mitigating blood usage. Which means he just hits hard and often.
If you make no over extensive gameplay decisions a glass cannon is still a glass cannon. You'd have to play nago pretty fast and loose to be made of glass.

I think I really like Leon Masseys summary of how chipp fits the glass cannon archetype. Instead of being high damage-low health hes low health-high amount of options, if that makes sense. He has a good rounded toolset including a meterless reversel, a lot of mixups, very high speed making it easy for him to start his pressure, a lot of variied pressure with great mental stack, etc. Hes basically a swiss army knive made of diamond that crumbles into dust if you sneeze at him wrong.

Scythe is the high-skill high-reward weapon people loved at the time with people aiming to be good at the weapon left and right.

Glass cannon is just the wrong descriptor for this kind of character.

    • @TetraBui

These 2 characters both are hard snowballers
Makoto has some of the highest health in the game and while it’s hard to get in (ok ex dash punch is a bit insane tho) once she gets in she can easily snow ball into a win, so in a way it’s more just a Rushdown with less options and more health, but not a grappler, I would just call Makoto a hybrid grappler I guess.
Nago has strike throw off literally anything and his pressure is really strong, but with not many get in options we often have to just watch for gaps in offense and capitalize quickly.
As well as really dumb mixups mid pressure
(I fucking love using f.SS Grab, which is really strong since the 3rd slash is also a frame trap that we often RC out of, or just use beyblade to make it safe)

My interpretation of Makoto has always been that of a Tank. A high health character with high damage that has stunted movement but not limited movement like how other fighting games have grapplers lose things like dashes air dashes double jumps etc. She has a slow walk speed but an actually insane dash but putting these traits together makes her movement not technically bad but more committal and harder to redirect. And in terms of health she has a high base health especially for the old SF female characters since by design they were made to on average have less than male characters and Makoto is actually up there in 3rd strike.
Another example I could give for the archetype would be Susanoo from BB since he's certainly got that high health and damage but his dash/run is the only one in the game with significant start-up but when actually used he has one of the fastest ground speeds in the game. So similarly to Makoto's forward dash punch special in some scenarios its better for him to just use a special to get in.

Phoenix from MvC is a pretty notorious glass cannon.
Her health is so low in a game where almost any combo is already a Touch of Death she's so fragile a stray half combo or a single super can kill her.
For context she has ~half the health of average character.
And if you commit to saving up 5 bars of super for Dark Phoenix she games some of the most oppressive normals and like nagoriyuki her health continuously drains to one.

it's weird to have nago on here, a character i'd argue doesn't quite fit the bill even after all his changes since his health drain is more about meter management than something that absolutely has to happen to him, but not mention chipp or , maybe the best example in the series, baiken pre-strive. nagoryuki launched with a really unga bunga ass playstyle and after his changes you get punished for not considering his meter , but a smart nago player is still fully capable of being relatively chunky. baiken in xrd, xx, and even gg1 was maybe the ultimate glass canon though. she barely had any health and could get blown up by combos super easily but had the unique advantage of never truly losing her "turn". she had multiple moves you could do *while in blockstun* which meant the opponent had to rely on forcing you to whiff or make bad moves rather than putting a ton of pressure on her with blockstrings. she was a super fun and interesting character but it did result in her being either insanely good or insanely bad in every game she was in. i like her strive iteration plenty but having her go from one of the most difficult and edge-of-your-seat characters in the series to someone who is pretty basic is a little sad to me

Disagree with Jigglypuff being a good example of glass cannon. At least in melee, Puff can die very early but the floatiness responsible makes her harder to combo and she's got good recovery. The floatiness also makes it so that confirming stray hits into killing blows becomes much harder for most of the cast as their moves will push puff out of reach.
IMO Ice climbers is a better example. In both melee and brawl, they're able to kill off of any grab (pre wobbling ban) but due to their wonky nature as puppet characters, they can be easily separated off of most hits which severly gimps the remaining character.

Ik that the video speaks from a fighting game perspective, but to me the best example of a glass-cannon is the Magic-User from Shadow over Mystara.
You get access to a lot of spells, most of which are AoE (Fireball, Reverse Gravity, Ice Storm) or multi hit (Magic Missile, Lightning Bolt, Flesh to Stone).
But you have little to no access to any defensive equipment/spells; you get a short teleport for your backdash and Projected Image, which makes 3 copies of yourself for a short time, and can't equip shields or armor (the only bit of armor you can use is a helmet).
On top of that, Magic-User has the lowest HP pool of the game and can't get any weapons until mid to late game since you're limited to staffs. Plus the damage for them is... Bad, to say the least. Although, there is an attack you can make that has a chance of paralysing enemies for a short period, which has a short melee range.
Anyway, thank you for listening to my ted talk

Mira from Killer Instinct is the best version of giving up health for offense imo.
Nago has her damage potential. Avatar Belial has her combo extensions. But she also has setups and mobility and even a little bit of lame-out ability if you get a big lead, cap it off with health drain, then sit back to bait the opponent into hanging themselves with her good normals and decent projectiles.

Makoto is super neat in 3S because she absolutely plays like a grappler but her threat is situational. If she has meter and has her back to the wall, one grab can end the game with her touch of stun SA2 combo that's a ToD on a lot of characters. The risk-reward balance of her grab is dynamic throughout the round which opens up fun mind games.

I think in less generous terms these characters are often referred to as Robbery characters. In terms of Street Fighter and Guilty Gear at least this generally means having extremely powerful offensive options in exchange for a complete lack of defensive ones or poor neutral. The health pool is kind of irrelevant here as usually these characters have reasonably high health pools in exchange for having to hold whatever their opponent puts them in.
For Street Fighter 5 that'd be Oro, G, and Balrog (Among a few others I'm sure), for Strive I'd give it to Goldlewis and Nago. Funny enough for Street Fighter 6 I'd have to give the title to Aki, although Marissa is up there too.
These characters tend to be pretty mid-tier most of the time (Except SF5 Balrog, I think he was generally accepted to be high tier by the end, and Nago was Strive's demon for several seasons). Tournament level players prefer consistency and these characters tend to be very coinflippy, there's a reason why the "Nago round" was a thing, where you guess wrong one time and Nago just wins, not your fault.

All-out offense to knock off at least 40% health before I got beaten enough to acquire vtrigger, at which point a single poke becomes 60%. Her health was bad, her defense was wonky and her buttons were stubby, but if I touched the opponent with my vtrigger active, they were probably gonna take a hard L.

I come from Tekken and imo the best character from t7 to classify as a glass cannon is Lucky Chloe. She has a high risk/high reward playstyle. Boasting some of the highest combo damage in the game, she can melt your health in as little as 2 interactions but it comes at the cost of being highly punishable. Her most rewarding tools can be sidestepped or are extremely unsafe on block.
