Another true R&B gem you might not have heard is by After 7 “Ready Or Not” released in 1990, it peaked at number 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Karyn White “The Way You Love Me” is an upbeat song that still shows off the power of her voice. “Love Saw It” is a duet with Babyface the is also a must listen. Love
This came out in 1989 and reached #1 on the R&B charts for 3 weeks straight! I remember it being real big on the radio and basically becoming a sort of anthem for many women at the time, glad you guys decided to react to it!
Wonderful song. Won't get as many views as the trend on this channel is to not view amazing black female singers. But wacky British bands? Not sure what is happening but I've been tuning into this channel for nearly two years. The vibe, song selections has changed.
Karyn got started with a jazz musician Jeff Lorber. They had a big hit. She landed her deal because of it. The interesting thing is she was married to Terry Lewis, of the producing team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. They produced Janet's Control and Rhythm Nation. Karyn first album, however, was produced by another team, Babyface and LA Reid. Her musical catalog is fantastic. Lots of hits.
This song was VERY POPULAR with women. The phrase, I'm Not Your Superwoman, became one a lot of women voiced when they felt forgotten, neglected or ignored for all the work they did in their marriages and keeping the household running.
This was such an empowering song at that time. The men hated it😂. But liked it at the same time. Listen to her songs "Romantic" and "Secret Rendezvous". She is an amazing singer.
Another wildly underrated classic #8 in 1989. (The 80's RULE!) If you release this today, it's #1 for 2-3 weeks Also check out her other hits "Secret Rendezvous" "The Way You Love Me" & The Way I Feel About You "Romantic" reached #1 in '91, but it wasn't of this superior quality. Glad she got a #1 though.
So many under appreciated artists in my early 20s. Such a competitive market for great artists. Lisa Fisher, and Karen should have been cultivated in the music world. The 80s and 90s missed out on greatness so many times. I listened to this during a break up, but it taught me so very much. Canadian Grandma Lori.C. A very super woman at heart.
Thank you for doing this song. I recommended it for a listen a couple of months ago. Why Karyn didn't become another Whitney Houston is beyond my comprehension. She was a staple of Atlanta V103 radio in the early 80s.
Another Whitney is might lofty. Karen was talented but she wasn't on that level vocally. Now Lisa Fischer if she wanted it could've been "another Whitney" but she didn't want it.
This songs brings back so many memories of singing this at the top of my lungs with my sis & cousin. We were all around 12 singing like we were married with children 😂
I got to go to her concert the year this song came out.1989 , she was the opening act for Bobby Brown. She was so beautiful, and her voice was beautiful. Love this song, yes sir 👍♥️🙏✝️✌️😎
I said it before and I’ll say it again, the 80’s RnB catalogue has gems that outshine anything else to date, from all other era’s RnB. This masterpiece is one of them…
This is one of my all time favourite hits. Every time I hear this song it sends tingles down my spine. What an incredible song, sung by a brilliant artist with a an incredible y powerful voice.
We love you guys. I sent a comment earlier for woman to woman by Shirley brown .. but there are two answers to that song one is called ...from this woman to you by Barbra Mason.. the other song is called she has papers on me" by Richard Dimples Field. They answer each other but start with woman to woman or you won't know what's happening.
Thank you! I requested this months ago and waited patiently. This was definitely an anthem for us women at the time... gave me chills. I'm sorry that Jay kept his eyes closed because he missed a great video but Amber (mah gurrrl) never missed a beat. Another suggestion is Vesta Williams "Congratulations" I believe you will enjoy it just as much.
Karyn’s voice is so smooth. I forgot she was the original singer of this song. Her voice is beautiful but I just can’t help but LOVE the remake by Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, and Dionne Warwick. Their voices alone are magic but together…they will take you to church!!! You gotta check it out! There’s a really old version when the trio were on Oprah. PERFECTION!!
Karyn White, as successful as she was she should have been a superstar, she had it all , the powerful voice, looks , amazing live performer, and still looks good and is still out here doing it today. She’s not a one hit wonder, you should check out her other hits , she’s got some jams, like “ The Way You Love Me’ , “ Love Saw It” , “ Romantic” , “The Way That I Feel About You “ , “ One Heart” , “ Can I Stay With You “, “ I’d Rather Be Alone “ and the jam “ Facts Of Love “ from the 80’s with jazz artist Jeff Lorber, that was 80’s hot pop! 🔥🔥🔥
I can'tt even remember the last time I'd heard this song. I DO know it's been too long-a-time. mean YEARS!!!! What a treat it was to hear it again. Thank y'all for this one!!!
Amber - thank you! This has been a personal request of mine for about a year now - and I'm SO glad to finally see it :). This is the one time though that I was hoping that you would do the lyric version. It runs about a minute longer than the video - and her voice reaches this AMAZING climax. Worth checking out on your own time. But you MUST watch the official video for her Secret Rendezvous. It is absolutely SMOKIN HOT. You'll need a fan to cool off afterwards.
Yes. I've been requesting Karyn White for about as long. I've also been requesting Angela Winbush's "Angel" and Regina Belle's "Baby Come To Me" for about a year. Both of these ladies have stunning voices.
She was one of our best singers in the late 80's and early 90's! They're so many more! Angela Winbush, Regina Belle, Vesta Williams, Cherrelle, Melba Moore. You all have to go down that rabbit hole! There is no singing like this today. I truly miss these powerful, soulful voices!
Haven’t heard this in years, I always loved this song. She had a fantastic voice. There’s a slightly longer version of the song which continues to show off more of her vocals.
1 of the greatest and timeless songs from the 80s. If you guys want to revisit this I suggest checking out an early 90s cover version by Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle AND Dionne Warwick
If you listened to R&B radio between 85-95, you can remember every song and still sing it even if you haven't heard it since then, just like I did during this reaction. This was a regular when it came out. I loved Karyn White.
Before her debut album, she was best known for her lead vocals on jazz artist Jeff Lorber's surprise pop-dance hit "Facts of Love." So this song was a little bit of a revelation for me.
Glad you guys got to this artist 😁 Ms. Karyn White is an underrated powerhouse and this song is an anthem ! Her other song, The way you love me is a great pop song too.
@@blackblake3658 I agree. Imagine that The Deal didn't want to record his songs in the beginning. I like Toni a lot also. Karyn White over Pebbles. Karyn could really sing. Pebbles had songs that fit her voice and style.
Karyn White was married to Terry Lewis, an original member of the R&B band, Morris Day and the Time and also half of the legendary production team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. One of my favorite songs by her is "Love Saw It", a duet with Babyface. A suggestion for a future Female Friday, is a song called "Baby Be Mine" by 90's R & B singer Mikki Howard. I think you will definitely like her.
The video added so much to the story, and Jordan missed it all.🫤 Knowing that the couple had a child made it an even tougher situation for the character that Karen portrayed. This song was a favorite for many women, teen girls and probably preteen girls who didn't even know what it was about. It was an anthem for many, like Lisa Stansfield's "All Woman" and others. More by Karen... "Secret Rendezvous" "Love Saw It" (duet with Babyface...I wish you'd get deeply into his music) "Romantic" (backing vocals - Babyface)
I met Karyn White several times. I used to cut Bobby Gonzales' hair. He was her producer. He was in the original video (this was not the original video). But it was funny, one day my brother was over my house and he asked if I had ever cut anyone famous' hair, and just then the video came on and I said, "Well, I cut his hair, does that count? He laughed like I was making a joke. But in the original video, it was not like a movie, it was her and the band, and he was playing a guitar of some sort (I don't know whether it was a bass or what) but they were looking into each other's eyes and snuggling up as she was singing and he was playing. It was funny. But I had cut his dad's hair, his brother's and his for many years and cut his till he moved. They were together for a long time but got married in the 2000's (2007?) And only stayed married 2 years. But they had been together at least 10-15 prior to getting married.

Karyn had us belting this songs as kids like we knew what she was talking about. Now that we’re older this song hits differently. She still gives a great performance today.

The first time I heard and seen Karyn White was on the video of the song, Criticize, by Alexander O’Neal. He’s an artist the Squad hasn’t done yet and should. He’s got a bunch of hits. Karyn sang the chorus in his song before she went solo.
I totally agree. I've recommended Alexander O'Neal for about a year now. "Fake", " Criticize", "In The Middle", " If You Were Here Tonight", and "Saturday Love" with Cherrelle. All classic hits!! Just beautiful songs!
Always loved this song. You should listen to Melisa Morgan, "Do You Still Love Me", and "Do Me Baby". Her voice is AMAZING! More 80s music please, because that was the best!!!! You guys are my favorite reactors. I love that you actually listen to and enjoy so many different eras and genres of music.

Amber, you can teach Jay about diamonds with Marylin Monroe’s version of Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes from the early fifties.
A classic. They don't make R&B gems like this anymore.
They do but they’re not mainstream anymore. You’d have to dig deep
Another true R&B gem you might not have heard is by After 7 “Ready Or Not” released in 1990, it peaked at number 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
You are soon right!!
@tylerhackner9731 It's not the same at all but there are some gems here and there.
Indeed !!! UHHKAAY !!!
Karyn White “The Way You Love Me” is an upbeat song that still shows off the power of her voice. “Love Saw It” is a duet with Babyface the is also a must listen. Love
"Love Saw It" is one of my favorite duets ever!
Nope, that's why I go to old school bars they play oldies.
This came out in 1989 and reached #1 on the R&B charts for 3 weeks straight! I remember it being real big on the radio and basically becoming a sort of anthem for many women at the time, glad you guys decided to react to it!
I grew up during this time. Sooo many different genres of music and this era of R&B was sooo good. 👍🏼 👌🏼
I used to belt this out in my bedroom as a teenager, like I knew something about that kind of life! 😂 Loved her! 🥰
She did give instructions to stop right where you are and sing. You felt that in your heart at 15. 😂

You are so right. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced so many great songs and artists. You could do a week just reacting to them.
If memory serves, Jam and Lewis produced her second album which is where she met Lewis and they began a relationship.
I’d forgotten about that!!
“Facts Of Love” was the first time I heard her.
Thanks for reminding me!
🤗
What!!? That’s incredible to know! 🙏
This song was VERY POPULAR with women. The phrase, I'm Not Your Superwoman, became one a lot of women voiced when they felt forgotten, neglected or ignored for all the work they did in their marriages and keeping the household running.
That was a big tune back in the day of the 90s. Karyn had a lovely voice. Thanx for the reaction Rob Squad.
This was such an empowering song at that time. The men hated it😂. But liked it at the same time. Listen to her songs "Romantic" and "Secret Rendezvous". She is an amazing singer.
“Secret Rendezvous”! Yes! Fantastic song! They should also check out “Facts Of Love”, on of the tracks she made with Jeff Lorber.
I’m a MAN & I LOVED it then & now.
I'm so happy to see young people appreciate what we listen to on a regular this was the norm
The Way You Love Me ...the live Soul Train version is a must. Karen can not only sing, but she can DANCE!!!

Karyn White, YAS! You have to do Secret Rendezvous by her, it's so great.
You guys gotta check out Shanice, “I Love Your Smile”! She was popular in the 90s. ❤
@Jamie, I think they did Shanice's song already.
Great that you discovered her- The actual radio version she lets go on vocals. Her dance songs are fantastic too: !!!!!!!

Babyface and L.A. Reid dominated the charts during that time.
Back in the 90s, R&B music was Pop music.
"The way you love me" is way more upbeat. Probably my favorite song of hers (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤

the 80''s were the greatest decade of music ever
I heard this back in 1988 and I went right out and bought her CD
Ugh when she sings YOU DON'T LOVE ME THE SAME 😭
I put in my recommendation of this one a while back because it told my mother’s story and I’m personally touched that you all did it.
Karyn White has a powerhouse voice and this song was perfect for her. Loved this song back in the day. Still love it. Thanks
This song was a total female anthem when released in 1988! Karyn White’s voice is amazing!❤❤
"Secret Rendezvous", " The way you love me" by Karen White
Classic song!
Absolute 90s anthem.
This was the ladies anthem haha back in the day and still is for those that know haha she was the one back in the day
Karyn White is a diamond and to think, she was only 23 years old when she recorded super hit. One of my favorite tracks.
