Saints Row is a franchise that means a lot to me as it was my first pick-up for the Xbox 360. This week, that very franchise was tarnished. In the spirit of both rebellion and nostalgia, I decided to fire up the REAL Saints Row in 2022 and see how it fared...

Imo Saints Row 2 is where the series peaked. Fantastic soundtrack, fun side activities, interesting different gangs and side characters, the trademark humor had a bit more of bite to it and pushed it a bit further. Overall I just have a massive soft spot for Saints Row 2 and while I do enjoy Saints Row, I can't get past the awkward control scheme, which was my biggest problem with 2.
Okay, but does the PC port work?
Saints Row 2 also still really holds up for me now. I recently played it again. It’s just as good as I remember it
SR2 was the perfect blend of satire and seriousness, unlike GTA 4 which was like "San Andreas Jetpacks? Who needs jetpacks when you can have cars that handle like boats, boring missions, and a downer ending?" A few months later SR2 is like "SEPTIC TRUCKS! You want to fight Voodoo, Yakuza, Tribal Tattoo toting steroid abusers, and Fast and the Furious wannabes? Oh and on top of all that heart wrenching scenes with characters you actually care about." You won't find those in any modern Rockstar games, they're too far up their own ass making every character an unlikeable prick caricature. But then SR3 came along and went full corporate, in-universe and IRL.
@@SamuelCatsy gta 4 was the best imo
With mods, sure.
Two coworkers told me today they were going to buy and play the saints row reboot. I tried to warn them to skip it but both of them ignored me
Can't save every one 🦉
I remember how big of a deal it was being able to store vehicles in contrast to GTA where you just store them loosely in a garage and can be lost.
I still think the first two hold up well. It’s amazing what writing and a sense of place can do for a game; the gameplay is dated but everything around it is so cool it’s still fun as hell.
The character models in 2 are awful and the animations aren't the best either (and yes, I'm comparing it to the games from it's time) but it's still my favourite... There's just something about SR2
2 is leagues above 1, though. It's all about those little things they did to enhance the experience. It's like they went through 1, while going: "hey, wouldn't it be cool if..."
and just made a checklist of stuff to add, then actually added it all. Oh, we rendered a mall? Let's let people go inside and shop there and steal a Lambo so they can stunt jump from one store to the next if they want! Oh, we have signs in the city? Let's let the player blast them right off the buildings and crush whatever's underneath with them! Oh, we have billboards? Let's let the player redecorate the road with their shattered pieces! Oh, a beer can? Let's code it as a weapon! Voilition was wild back then.
@@thebadwolf3088 I agree Saints Row 2's animations aren't the best, but it had the most realistic character models in the series.
Johnny Gat : Who the fuck's this guy?
Julius : Troy and I found him. We're gonna see if he can roll with us.
Johnny Gat : Julius, if he wants to run with the Saints, he's gotta be canonized!
Troy : He's right, everyone had to do it.
Saints row 1 and 2 were amazing.
3 was decent but over rated af
4 sucked
whatever the new one is called now sucks.
@@creepyghostproductionz9026 That was sum impressive shit the only Saint who kick ass like that was Gat
Johnny Gat: shit it took me half the time
@@spiffygonzales5899 fr I agree with you sr1 and sr2 where great 3 was okay and 4 suck they ruined it with the aliens and superpowers along with earth getting blown up
Watches, I got watches here! Yo hey man, this shit it'll cost you 600 dollars in that store, aw whatever! Watches I got watches here.
Saints Row (Original) is my favorite in the franchise. It's janky, but a lot of fun. I just wish it wasn't messed up on the Xbox One/ Series version. The Portable Audio Player and the Radio in the game is broken because of the way the game accesses the hard drive. Really makes replays on that system frustrating.
The radio is fine if you reload a save. I only noticed radio related glitches maybe twice max in my 10ish hour play through. Not really a big deal
What’s wrong with the radio? I just replayed SR1 last year on series x and didn’t notice any issues with the radio.
Saints 1&2 works perfectly on my series X
Do you have a music app like Spotify or something paused in the background? I know that's given me issues with in-game radios before on Series X, especially with 360 backwards compatible games.
This game has so much substance and soul like being able to buy fast food at the drive thru rob stores after they close smoke weed drink liquor ect was amazing
Should play saints row 2
Saints row 4 waaaay better
@@elijahdelgado2808 naw 2 is goat
@@elijahdelgado2808 4 isn't really a Saint's Row game, it's a superhero/matrix simulator. Saint's Row 2 was the series peak.
@@elijahdelgado2808 it's good, not really like the main games though
Lol I make a funny
SR2 is the best open city game. My favorite thing is how cars react when you shoot at them. Just go off as fast as they can in a panic and usually run over a few pedestrians before crashing into a telephone pole.
That shit always makes me laugh.
Really wish they went the route of sleeping dogs or true crime streets of LA. Hell even something like Mafia, I know it’s a little different but it could of been done with a semi decent story with just a crazy sandbox and a somewhat lived in world. They spend all that time for development and now this new game probably iced their own franchise.
Been thinking the same thing. A grounded narrative like Mafia/SD With a gritty dark tone of MW2019 and they can still keep the goofy stuff in gameplay. Volition at this point have one more chance ….
@@ariseharbinger4799 man if this reboot gets enough money for a sequel don’t expect anything like old school saints row
Imagine a new sleeping dogs 🔥
Saints Rows 2 has MANY similarities with True Crime NYC, that's the route they should've followed.
@@thebadwolf3088 what happened to all the city gang game’s, true crime nyc, saints row, gta, fuck even crackdown, I guess the 50 cent games, scarface the world is yours (best one btw)I know I’m missing some
It’s truly, deeply sad Saints Row ended up like that. R.I.P.
I'd love to see a decent remaster of the first two games, especially since we never got the first on PC
Since the studio who made the first 2 games are no longer there doubt they could.
Yes please
@@sumireravenclaw8034 That makes no difference, they just need to remaster the original two games, not do a remake. They don't need the original dev team to do a remaster.
I feel like Volition will suddenly find the source code and remaster/remake the first two to keep themselves afloat now.
Unfortunately, they'd be hugely censored.
They should've just remade this game instead of releasing that embarrassment of a reboot & charging 60 bucks for it.
I have so many amazing memories of saints row 1 and 2! Both great games I recommend anyone who hasn’t played these two yet to go back and give them a try!
it really is insane how a 2006 game is more fun and better overall than a 2022 multi-million dollar game made by such a large development studio.
Still own the original and play it often, it’s a fun game to go back to when feeling nostalgic.
Saint's Row 1 is my favorite of the series. It's basic but feels like an expansion of the Gang mechanic in San Andreas. Also had freeaim where GTA had that sometimes awful and awkward auto aim.
Saints Row 2 is the Fallout New Vegas of Saints Row
Everyone called this a GTA clone when it came out but honestly I always liked it better than GTA.
This is the saints row we know and love
The real saints row was so edgy that they weren't afraid to drop the n word, meanwhile saints row 2022 is afraid to offend people with rim jobs
This was my first love on Xbox 360. Made so many friends on-line.
I liked this one the most. Don't get me wrong. 2 is dope.
Those older games just have so much more passion put into them. That type of passion is almost extinct in this day of gaming.
Ok ok you said you never played gta 4, you gotta play it and do a retrospective. Would be a cool video to see you first reaction to the entire game once you finish it. In modern times.
I recently played Saints Row 2 again, and I also have gone back to the original Saints Row a few times. One of the thing that I feel made the first two games so incredible was the city of Stilwater. It just felt alive and real, and not necessarily in the sense of having 100 NPC's on screen (although there were plenty of NPC's in any area.) The city felt logical, it had neighborhoods that looked and felt different to represent different cultures and economic classes. The highways were designed in a way that made sense and were fairly easy to memorize.
Plus, I downright love the edge and maturity of the games. They were products of their time, but that proved to me that the time in question was better than today. Nowadays everything has to be quirky, corny, hipsters acting like they are rebellious instead of actual hardcore street thugs.. Plus, back then people weren't so offended by everything. Half these side activities couldn't exist in today's world with Twitter pitching a fit about it.
Saints Row is top 3 one of my favorite 360 games. I poured so much time into that game, it was ridiculous. I started playing this again a couple of weeks ago on my Series X in anticipation of the reboot and had a blast with it.
You were 11 and I had just gotten back from Iraq in 2006. 😂 This is one of the first games I got for the Xbox. The first one was either Gun or Kameo.
@MrMattyPlays@Telegram Only bot.
oh sht i remember gun i had that aswell that was also a good game
The REAL Saints Rows…love that
Sooo I worked on the first Saints Row game and something most people don't know is that they considered calling Saints Row "Bling,Bling"
Saints row 1 was really good. SR2 was the absolute best in the series! Playing it right now, and the amount of things the reboot is lacking, is just astounding... They definitely regressed.
Gawd, don't you miss when developers weren't afraid about who they were going to offend and simply made a good game?
Yes I do so much
Lol people like you is what ruined gaming you only care about offending people and not quality gameplay
Imagine how GTA 6 is gonna be if you think the SR Reboot is bad. Ooooh boy.
before the social justice warriors and gaming "mediators" came into play
Gotta love all the "gamers" in the comments, stay pathetic
I don't really understand the GTA clone talk that was around this game at that time. Imo it handles much better than even GTA 4, they came through with their own ideas and again imo improved on what GTA was doing. I still to this day think Saints Row 1 or 2 is more fun than any GTA game including GTA V (Single player at least). How they thought this was going to be a success I just don't get it. Like they survived the early social media days when people were trying to 'cancel' games like this so I don't understand why they would be so scared to be cancelled now, if they kept up their hip-hop feeling too I think they would have earned a lot more shoutouts / recognition in the genre and then if they acted human for just a second they would have been pushed by the genre. Either way they missed an easy slam dunk
Definitely missed a easy slam dunk you're right. Maybe companies are too scared of making the games they want to make these days, too much outside, shareholders influence, doesn't help that people defend the company decisions and take what ever the dole out because they are starved for games lol and the GTA clone talk it because many only see the third person, map in the corner and driving around with hookers and go oh look GTA it's like everyone thinks cod clone if it's modern war FPS, or Halo if Sci fi FPS, or Assassin's creed if they have open world lol.
@@kevinlist3330 very true though tbh idk if they really want to make Saints Row or if they really want to make a different game but know it won't sell as much on it's own because it doesn't share the name, at least that's my thought coming from where Saints Row 1 & 2 were set and then how The Third, 4, GoH, AoM if that makes sense like it just seems like they got bored. Either way it's a damn shame, I was off the week this came out as it was my bday but as soon as I knew about the kind of reboot we were getting I was like I can't support this lol. Also what happened to these clone games? like I hate how most of these huge games like CoD are just ass now lol I would love for a resurgance of these 'Clones'
It’s definitely a San Andreas clone
@@videsjlv idk you couldn't recruit homies, save multiple cars for the whole game save, etc etc. Plus Saints Row imo plays better/smoother than any GTA maybe only thing I would swap with GTA is driving but even then I could take or leave it
Glad to see someone showing love to SR1! SR2 was great, and it seems to be everyone's favorite (I think a lot in part due to SR1 being xbox eclusive) but I love the original Saints Row so much.
As someone that has never played a saints row game, I bought saints 1-3 digital and remastered 4 on disc. Currently playing through SR1 and really enjoying this game.
Saints Row probably changed my life tbh. I remember bumping KRhyme before even really liking any music and just falling in love. Now I'm 22 (First played this when I was like 8-10 or something) still in love with Hip-Hop and it's sad to see the franchise hopped onto the dubstep trend back in like 2011 and haven't really been able to find a way to get out of it to create a somewhat decent game
You know I find this reboot really funny considering saint row primed us for 3 great reboots I’m sure they never even considered. The saint time traveling with Jane Austen - the saint invading a spartan esc planet or for a more serious
Reboot the alternate time line we’re there all hard street cops something like true crime.
I would have loved to play any of those adventure.
ALSO, if you beefcake your character, you actually hit harder and the fights don’t last as long as when you are skinny. The only game I’ve ever seen do this.
This is my favorite one in the series. Obviously 2 is a close second but something about the first one will always be special to me. I remember getting this in 06 when I was 6 for my 360 and being absolutely MIND BLOWN! going from San Andreas on the ps2 to this was just so unbelievable to me at the time I remember just driving around amazed at the graphics lol. I have so many good memories on this game and have lost count on how many times I've replayed it. Sr1 and sr2 will forever be In my top favorite games of all time. The stories, characters, soundtracks are just phenomenal. Really wished they would've Remastered or remake this game instead of that woke dog shit they released with the reboot. Let's be honest, the moment we saw the first trailer we knew it was gonna be horrible. Sad to say but Saints Row is officially dead :(
EXACTLY people who played this when it came out know there's nothing quite like the first 2 Saints Row games
Love the first two games, I don't mind the reboot but I really wish they went back to this tone.
@Jeric White I like it it’s better then elden ring
@@BestInPlayz Good one.

Literally just finished playing through this myself now working on sr 2
Physics got worse after 2. Less feel of weight
Fun Fact this game was almost named “Bling Bling” and the saints almost wore green. That didn’t happen because GTA San Andreas
I’m playing Saints row 2022 and I love it and I played the original back in 2006 and the other games. I think the game is fun and I haven’t had any issues with it🤷🏽♂️
Are you playing with the best voice in the game, the effete southern one? Makes every line funny.
@@kyriosmalaka2312 I actually am lol it’s a shame they didn’t have an British one this time especially because I am from London.
its crazy how good games were 10 years ago look at grim dawn on x box 10 year old game looks almost as good as diablo 3
Matty thank you for uploading your vids in 1440p
Saints row 1 and 2 i fell in love with, the others just got worse and far from the first 2, it really divided the fan base
I played the intro on the demo disc countless times before convincing my parents to get me the game for Christmas that year, along with Gears of War. Simpler times
I love how you play sonic 06 in the background in the year 2006, Nice touch.
Why do I get the feeling that a lot of people are gonna start playing the older Saints Row games I know I was playing Part two last week I might jump in to saints row one on the 360 because I never finished it yeah just forget about the reboot more like the recrap.
I go back to these games on a regular basis. And, for as annoying as the AI in the first two games can sometimes be, I can't help busting a gut whenever that same AI creates some of the most chaotic situations I've ever seen across all of the games I've played. These games are gems.
Quite enjoyable to watch the beginning of this fascinating series I never gave a chance because so many claimed to was a lessor clone to "GTA", I can see now that was a mistake!
I actually think saints row 1 and 2 are better then gta but there's probably heaps of people that would disagree
@@xUseTheForks GTA has never been good imo. Sure its fun for a bit but it gets boring fast. That said I'm not a fan of SR either
2006 damn I was 16 back then I was still on my original Xbox playing simpsons hit and run
I was one of those guys who didn't like gta 4.. Didn't like the physics, the driving and not to happy about the new liberty city.. I was just a 20 year old who wanted a next gen San Andreas.. Saints row 2 was that game for me.. (I was on playstation so never got around to play the first one)
“Steal Ho’s from their abusive pimps” 😄Man the world lost its fun starting somewhere around 2015
Mass Effect and Saints Row were the reason I didn’t buy a PlayStation that year, and I STILL play some of these songs on my Spotify.
The first 2 are in a more serious tone and people seemingly prefer that, the new one plus 3-4 are goofy aah which some dont prefer but i they didnt try to hide the fact the SR was gonna be goofy lol idont know what ppl were really expecting
I'd love to see a letsplay series of Saints Row 1, 2 & 3 with you matty,
can someone make Matty a follower in Skyrim. we all need that.
@MrMattyPlays@Telegram Only hello
As a huge fan of the Saints Row series, I highly highly recommend you play through saints row 2. It is the franchises peak
Good. Finally you're playing the real deal.
Imagine this with Saints row 2022’s graphics
Wow a game about Gangsters that’s a cool idea! Too bad no one has done that since Saint Row 2
Great video! Would love another one for Saints Row 2! It basically capitalized on everything the first had going for it and added way more.
Matty you're going to make me replay SR2 with all this nostalgia
How can this old ass game be better than most games nowadays
passion that’s why
Loved the music from Sonic 06 in the intro
I feel like gaming as a whole has been going backwards in terms of quality instead of forwards.
The reboot should've been a remake. Change my mind
Uh no, who wants a gta clone
2006 was a good year for video games. Just bought a Carmageddon that came out that year and it’s the kind of ridiculous humor that really doesn’t seem to be made much anymore. Controls could use some work, sure. Graphics aren’t great. But that gameplay is so fun even when it’s broken.
Starting watching the video moments after waking up. Didn’t realize the cityscape at the beginning was an actual photo. I thought to myself, “Damn, I don’t remember Saints Row looking that good.” Then I quickly realized I was terribly mistaken (and half asleep) once I saw people walking and the 2022 mention.
Because 2 was added to gamepass I decided to pick this one up again. I loved playing these back when they came out. I stopped at 3 though. I was thinking about getting the new one but I'm not sure now. Seeing you go through 2 agin for a little bit would be fun.
None of them are on game pass :(
trips down memory lane are always appreciated ;)
They wanted to move on from the "oudated humor" with the reboot meanwhile i laughed so hard during this video and my playtrough of SR2 a few weeks ago and with the reboot i cringe so hard with everything i see or hear. GG Volition
But i guess haters gonna hate 💃🏾🕺🏾
They call back to the original fast food name in the reboot, but it's just "FB's" now. Also, the car garage is "Jim Robs". We know what both of those really mean, but they just won't say it.
There still called that
@@chaserseven2886 no they aren’t
Going the crazy route with SR3 and SR4 was the best idea ever. It gave it its own identity and it was a hilarious break from all the realistic gritty gangsta GTA clones that were clogging the industry back then.
Yeah, as the crazy fun house for kids instead of a legit gangster game it was before.
Saints Row 2 is still great. But I actually love the new one, it makes me feel like I’m playing San Andreas again for the first time. I love it’s 80s vibes from time to time and it’s physics. And it somehow makes me think of Twisted Metal sometimes. But I guess that’s why there is the saying “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure”. Every now and then I find myself loving a game that most people seem to hate. Twisted Metal on ps3 was one of those, Evolve got a lot of backlash but that became one of my all time favorite games. Back on the original Xbox I loved that Indiana Jones game that got bad reviews but my brother and me loved it. Mortal Kombat Trilogy got poor reviews but I was obsessed with that game. I never played the very first one. Maybe I still should. I’m playing Saints Row 2 and the new one now, back and forth
I've been a fan of all Saints row games, and the reboot is no exception. I was hesitant in purchasing it due to the review scores but I'm glad I did the game is amazing, it's currently my Game of the year. It has jank and the story isn't amazing but I enjoy the dumb humor in these games, and it's the most fun I've had with a game in 2022.
GAME OF YEAR?????? COOOOOOPPPPEEEEE
that PvP was...... MMMMM chef kisses
I never fully played SR2 but remember liking the good bit I got to play at my uncles house. Saints Row 3 though was an entirely different experience for me I was able to play all of it and it was the first time I truly JUST DOVE into character creator and felt stylish as fuck the whole game. This was before I wasn’t worried about using female characters but I still made the most badass yet classy gangster around lol.
Before SR3 I didn’t spend that much time making a character since Soul Calibur 3 on PS2. And even then I don’t remember the characters I made in that nearly as clearly as SR3
Welp, it's time once again for me to feel old because I was 19 in 2006.
For the longest time, SR2 was my favorite Saints Row game mostly due to nostalgia. But in recent years I've come to love SR1 way more. With the exception of not having midway checkpoints and having wonky controls. SR1 looks better to me. It doesn't look brown, washed out, or ugly.
I prefer it's art style way more. SR2 also lost a lot of the charm and magic that was in SR1. SR2 while yes is indeed more serious than the later games it is definitely more goofy and lighthearted compared to SR1. I prefer the look, tone, gangs, and story of 1 more. If there's one thing that SR1 is that even 2 isn't it's being a gangsta simulator.
You can look at 1 and can just feel the street gang and rap influences in it. It's hard to explain unless you've watched or played it from start to finish. SR2 doesn't give me this feeling at all not even once. It feels more like a parody of street gangs and rap culture. Not as much as the later games but definitely more so than the first game.
By 2 Volition was already starting to shift towards the more goofier side of SR that was more noticeable in 3. Comparing the first two is like comparing day and night. I don't consider SR2 a gangsta game. A SR game? Yes. A gangsta game? No. SR1's humor feels more subtle compared to 2 as well.
SR1 also feels more grounded compared to 2 as well. The gangs were also inspired by real gangs unlike 2. Which might explain why I don't like any of the gangs from 2. I also prefer the look of the Saints Row District as well. It looks like an area that's inhabited by street gangs, unlike SR2.
Trees, the bane of Matty's existence.
Being it was an XBox game, I've never played the first one. Started the series with SR2, and loved it ever since though.
Hopefully the new one can be remedied.
YOU CAN GET IT ON PC NOW BRO i have it on PC flippy made a video on how to do it it's not too hard to do idk a lot bout pc's and i was able to do it and it runs perfectly except the in game personal radio is bugged and doesn't work for some reason but the normal radio stations do work
I wish you would’ve played Protect the Pimp game mode on Saints Row. That is still the best game mode ever released!
More traffic in a game from 2006 than a game from 2022! This is what happens when you place politics and 'zoomer humor' over making a good game. As a OG Saints fan I knew once they made it politically correct it lost its one unique feature.
The game was bad regardless of politics.
Certified hood classic
This was great. Bring on Saints 2!
Sainfs reboot is the characters old Saints Row characters would bully
They wouldn't if they did shaundi would've never joined in the 2nd

bro the beginning when matty is laughing at a gang fight its like damn this is literally what its like irl them blasting each other to shreds.. lmfao i agree its funny, just makes for a funny reaction video because it was an accurate depiction of intercity gang violence, which is not pc to laugh at but i think its hilarious
I played saints 1 for thousands of hours online, got my clan in the top 5 lol. It was so good I don't know why they axed the multiplayer in the other games

Should do a video on The Godfather game. low key a Diamond for a ps2 game /Xbox 360 game and kinda has a feel to it from robbing banks taking over business working your way up the family and the story is actually a great tie in to the movie with it’s own twin and truns
This and sr2 are some of the best games for what they were intended to be. Sr3 although had better mechanics took the series into a downward spiral
I just downloaded this game the other day to play it for the first time
Its sad how the devs of saints row really lost their way with the game just dissapointingly sad
Hey, THQ Nordic: port this to PC and re-secure all of the soundtracks licenses!
I've played the OG Saints Row and SRII many times... Love them.
SRIII is probably my favorite though.
i really wish they'd remaster the first 2 games.
