Fallout 4. Modder's paradise, a batch of potential, and Bethesda's biggest game next to Skyrim. Obviously, it holds a special place near and dear to the hearts of many of us on this channel, but how does it fare in 2022? As we continue to roll back the clock weekly on all these games, it's time to see if Fallout 4 is the fine wine we imagine it to be.

And that formula got even better with automatron. And the story line got to the finest with Far Harbor DLC. I know the Workshop DLC's get a bad rap but they truly feel like they expand the game's creativity factor. For a game with survival adventure game type crafting that is a pretty big plus to me. I loved how fallout 4 handled power armor mechanics-wise but just how common they were ruined it for me. The mod "Some Assembly Required" is how I think they should have approached it. You find the frame first and then find various pieces of armor throughout your playthrough until eventually you have a full armor set and can play as a legit tank. The fact that you get a full armor set within the first 30 min of the game was a major blunder imo.

For sure. The way you're describing it is much more in line with what I enjoy in good RPGs: giving you a small taste of some interesting shit early that you can't yet access because you're too puny and green. But now you know it's there, and so you indirectly are given something to work your way towards achieving *if you want to*.
I can see why Bethesda did it the way they did, though. It's an early game hook to get people excited, and they probably did it to appeal to a wider audience. But I personally was not a fan.
Thanks for the mod recommendation. I never finished FO4 and have been thinking about trying again. I'll be sure to add it to the list.

Needless to say my imagination went wild after discovering the scale this game was capable of. You never knew what or who was right around the corner or what may happen. I remember seeing a super mutant for the first time and getting absolutely wrecked. I took that personal so I tried to find the best power armor I could find to hopefully even the odds. No game has ever had me so hooked, no game has ever made my imagination just go absolutely wild like Fallout 4 did. @@Samual_33 Yeah I just reinstalled it after like a decade not playing with Open MW on my old laptop too. It’s WAY more stable than modern Bethesda titles especially on the Open MW engine. I haven’t crashed a single time.
It’s probably one of the deepest RPG experiences I have ever seen done. I still remember the first time someone told me it was a game where you could literally just do whatever you want, and you didn’t have to automatically choose a good guy or a bad guy. And you didn’t have to play a specific character the game gave you, it was your own decision to be the hero or the villain. Compared to most rpg like final fantasy or something where you have to play the character they give you, it was a whole new thing.
It definitely takes getting used to the mechanics though. It’s more like Dungeons and Dragons with dice rolls for combat. And because it’s all text based it’s more like reading an amazing novel than it is playing a game. I like to just zone out and go deep into the lore and role playing.
Plus using text let them make the story so much deeper because of the money it costs to voice a thousand characters, the later games got better looking and sleeker but they lost that world building. Each game got less deep, and less interesting.
Morrowind is truly a one of a kind experience. Part exploration, RPG dice rolls, but real time combat. I don’t know of any RPG that did it like that to this day.
Skyrim is more like an action game in comparison, and Oblivion was actually even bigger than Skyrim, and had way better quests, but Oblivion suffers from some sloppy gameplay and leveling choices. Still a way deeper and more immersive game than vanilla Skyrim. However Skyrim with mods is truly another masterpiece.
Skyrim without mods is the best looking and most exciting gameplay overall, but actually Oblivion and Morrowind are still way better games.
I never even really played the main quest in any Bethesda game after the first few play throughs either. Something about just exploring and role playing in those worlds is better than anything I have come across in any other franchise.
Fallout 3 was great, and I never played Fallout 4, but the Elder Scrolls was my favorite franchise ever made. Truly a role playing masterpiece.
Just the right combination of role playing and gameplay, but you really get the choice to just play however you want. You can sink a thousand hours and never touch a main quest line and still it beats most modern RPGs.
What kind of character build did you go for on your recent playthrough?

They changed it from an rpg focused game to a sandbox focused game which bethesda seems to be course correcting with starfield. Fallout 4 was what i believe was a decline in quality compaired its predecessors i used to think fallout 4 was a really good game before someone asked me how many times i actually replayed the main story which was well none i didnt care to beat it more then once unlike 3 where ive replayed it 6 or 7 times. And new vegas which ive replayed at least 10 to 12 times. I do like how they returned to normal on the botherhood and left the enclave alone the institute was a great idea aswell but my god the rettcons to lore was also annoying. Its not a good fallout game in the stanard of rpg but its a pretty solid shooter and sandbox so to sum up. A lot of people didnt enjoy the changes that were tied to the story aka dialogue settlement system and perks. as it made the game less of the rpg that fallout was known for. Others like me were annoyed by the rettcons just for the "cool" factor or ideas that they had just fell short even though they were good ideas to begin with like the settlement system was good removing most towns to make space for settlements less so.

As cool as the intro was, it's the most insufferable and long-winded, it pretty much murders any head-cannon you had for your character, was X before the war and had the personality of X? well you are a loving spouse that desperately wants to find their child which the game built Diamond city mainly for that purpose from the moment you try to enter, to the moment you set off with Valentine.
You are also softly tied in to using the Power Armor and settlement system with the world around you facilitated just for that, that's what the fusion cores are for unless you want access to the populated vault or using the gatling laser.
Of course who can forget the Dialogue system which got absolutely butchered due to the voiced dialogue, removing the 2 key essential ingredients of Fallout, it's like cake without the sugar or filling.

You got to the power armor and death claw fight… at least go over other key parts of the game?

Best improvement of FO4: real-time looting without going into a different menu. Oh man, that QOL change is by far my favorite.

I’ve played Fallout 4 about 3 times, each time teaming up with each faction. I love the game

I will say this about the open world reveal/starting point comment you made:
my first time playing Fallout 3 - I completely missed Megaton. I played for like 6 weeks before I found it and realized "oh crap, this was where I'm supposed to go in the beginning". It wasn't my first Bethesda game, but it was my first Fallout. So getting "on track" kind of missed me a bit in the beginning.
Around the same time I started Fallout 3, I lent my friend Oblivion - he pretty much explored the entire map before stepping foot in Imperial City (because he thought he was supposed to stay out of there because he was an outlaw). 3 months later I noticed he hadn't done a single inch of the main story and didn't even have IC marked on his map. (Oh and he had never slept in a bed...)
Similar to Skyrim where you're not necessarily forced to go in one direction, but you're essentially guided to go to Riverwood then Whiterun. In my opinion - this really helps new players to these games get an understanding of where you're supposed to go and do in the beginning to get started. For Fallout 4 - meeting up with Codsworth, going to RR and meeting Dogmeat, are kind of vital to understanding a lot of the basics of the game. Once you get past RR, or in Skyrim's case, Whiterun, it's go and do whatever you want. I mean, you can do that right from the start, but it is easier to get established in the game a bit beforehand.

Weapon and armor customization plus being able to build your own player home are what made this an S tier title. Currently living in the glowing sea through a mod i made

Theres so many great games that has came out over the years that I was so hyped for and after release only played them for a few months. The game I played the most after being so hyped was Elden Ring. A whole year blew by and I was still playing it with no other game on my radar. But Fallout 4. It was different. I almost have 5 years of memory from this game. I remember outside my highschool during lunch, me and my friends watching the anouncement trailer mere after it hit youtube. We were all friends, but non of us knew we all loved the Fallout franchise. That game was just as much of a journey as skyrim was. I felt like getting on Fallout 4 after school every single day. I loved fps rpgs.

lol, I was wondering why you were flagging dogmeat with the shotgun and then the muzzle blast and sound you added, just made me spit my coffee on my keyboard. Thanks for that Matt. :)

Fallout 3 makes me feel good all over. Like you say gettin “cozy” with it. Happens in 3, not so much in 4 but still one of my favourite games on my console.
Fallout 3 might be my favourite game of all time. Even though it might not hold up too good today.
