  • Fallout: New Vegas is a game that didn't get its roses until much later in its lifecycle. It took the borderline downfall of a franchise to spotlight just how well this game nails it. Returning to it in 2022, it's time to highlight what defines it as a top tier role playing game.

@@sirfog7066 Call of Duty 4 will always be my personal favourite. However, personal bias and nostalgia aside, I think Black Ops was the peak of the CoD franchise. The highest quality content for your money. Everything in that game was solid. Every map, every mode, it was all great. It’s also by far the most community oriented game in the franchise. I remember how closely knit it felt being able to see what everyone in your friends list was up to and how they were progressing. Black Ops 2 is exceptionally overrated in my opinion and has tons of flaws I can point out. Especially with its zombies design philosophy and campaign narrative.

I definitely didn't love NV as much as I did fallout 3 when it first released, for a lot of the same reasons, seemed empty and less overwhelming like fallout 3 definitely had going for it, with it being more populated with buildings and city like area. But honestly, my perspective changed shortly after finishing new vegas, and I can say year after year that NV proves to be the better between the 2 and the best overall in my opinion and a large portion of fallout fans seem to feel the same. The only thing that remains a criticism for me is the atmosphere doesnt feel as " fallout " and " apocalyptic " as 3 did. But the character progression, the choices, quests, quirk, content and D.L.C. remain top quality out of any game to this day. Especially the dlc. I'm not sure I'll ever experience better content in my life than I did with dead money, OWB, lonesome road, and honest hearts. Something about them trying it a locations only heard about in prior games and now finally being able to see these places and then feeling so grand. It blew me away. Which is why I'm so sad Bethesda is what it has become now days. I feel they slowly have become worse with each release starting with skyrim, like they put less love, less attention, less depth into their games. They make them more open, more shallow and bland. And that makes me so sad :/ I really hope obsidian gets the opportunity to make another fallout title now that Microsoft owns them all.

Well to b e fair 3 and 4 are not "fallout" and have never ever felt like fallout lol if you player 1 and 2 then NV feels right at home. You have a console bug that matty has and you're first experience is a game that is nothing like the actual fallout world and tbh fallout 3 is very empty and boring compared to its world space, yes its a cityish and blah blah blah but there is literally nothing to see in that city but the metro and the museums which after twice are forgettable while Fallout New Vegas was boring but a return to form environment wise was actually a treat to explore, because you expect to find nothing but stumble across this and that.

I absolutely love the graphical style of New Vegas. I think the brown and orange tiny, and the immensely rough textures of the graphical limitations, really helps elevate the actual brutal tone and oddly beautiful atmosphere of the Mojave Desert. I'd argue the art style, design and graphical presentation itself is what always brings me back to the game - it's utmost immersive and of course, in typical Fallout fashion, unusually comforting and warming. Differ from many, I think the DLC is one true magnum opus throughout the whole gaming history.
I can still remembered vividly how it totally shocked my youth mind when I first saw the final ending slideshow, then the sad yet beautiful voice of Vera flows out from the farewell broadcast of the Sierra Madre. Never before in my life have I had this deep emotion that even resonances 'til this day.
Since then, with each sadness and losses I've endured like every grown-ups do in real life, I've often thought of this DLC.
When realized I failed my dreams,
When got betrayed by once thought friends,
When lost my loved one to cancer.
Things happen, it's the very nature of life and there's nothing you can do to it.
Yet you can also always pull yourself up, but:
" The only way to begin again, is letting go. "
And so just like Dean, Christine and Dog in my game,
    Letting go I did.
Not many games can do this.

The way that you talk about the hardcore mode here and how it completely overhauled the game for you is exactly what happened with me with Fallout 4 Survival Mode. I think FO4 survival mode takes the hardcore mode from NV a step further in terms of the mechanics it introduces. That mode truly in FO4 completely changed the way I played the game and in a lot of ways it feels like that game was built around that mode. For me it’s the definitive way to play FO4. I’d be very interested to see your take on FO4 survival mode in a possible video. I’ve been enjoying these revisiting old games videos.

I think the thing I miss most about Fallout 3 and New Vegas is explosives like grenades in VATs. I was so annoyed when they switched to the more streamlined FPS mechanic used in Fallout 4. I once played an entire grenadier/heavy explosive weapons build in New Vegas that focused almost solely on grenades with VATs at points. You haven't truly enjoyed New Vegas until you've played Dead Money as a grenadier on hardcore mode chucking your limited hand crafted microfusion cell grenades at ghost people. That was my absolute favorite playthrough next to my Caesar's Legion melee beast with the ballistic fist.

Surprised you didn't talk about how beast Skilled is, or how you can cheese the game to give you extra stat points, by picking it, and then rebuilding your character when given the option. It's a lot more fun when you have 10 to all skills right at the start of the game, for a negligible 10% reduced experience gain. New Vegas is so massive, with so many ways to gain XP, that it won't matter. You'll still be able to max out at 50 if you want, or even higher if you have mods that increase the max level. Wild Wasteland can be good, but if you are mix-maxing your character and want the best, most powerful, and more importantly, most useful weapon in the game, don't take Wild Wasteland. You'll get the Alien Blaster instead, which has limited use compared to the non Wild Wasteland version.
For me, I chose Skilled and Good Natured. Coupled with the exploit mentioned above, gives an even greater increase to some of my favourite skills in the game, as it can make entire sections of the game far easier in my opinion. Having high Science and Speech allows you to bypass brutal areas, or get the best completion bonus from a quest. That more than makes up for loss to combat skills, especially when using companions.

The number one thing I disliked about New Vegas and why I rank Fallout 3 ahead of it are it's invisible walls in the middle of the map. The game kind of forces early game players to go a specific way to New Vegas, if you want a lore direct route you have to face deathclaws and those nasty hornet things at a level that you can't beat them at. Sure you can sneak by if you're lucky (I did it a few times) but the game really wants you to go all the way around and hit certain locations and characters before you get to Vegas.

Your not a vault dweller or tribal leader trying to save your home or someone looking for missing family, Your just a mail man that got shot in the head, where do you go from there? Do you get revenge on the person that shot you and try to find out what was so important about that chip? Or Do you decide to steer clear count yourself lucky and make your own path in the wasteland? Choice is up to you to define your characters journey without it feeling like your characters a scumbag abandoning the people depending on them and I love that

With the other Fallout games, I had an idea of what kind of character I wanted to play (pure evil, Wasteland Jesus, etc.). New Vegas was different. When I started the game, I wanted to be a gun for hire and I was for most of the game... but then the endgame came into sight and I felt like I strongly needed to pick a side. Instead, I killed Mr. House (who was my main employer), sided mostly with the NCR and forced the Legion out. Then I forced the NCR out and made New Vegas an independent nation. It wasn't about the caps anymore; it was about making New Vegas stand on its own two feet.

TBH F3 and 4 are boring to traverse in comparison. its why most fallout fans think NV is a return to form. Both have weak writing across the board and suffer from the same pitfalls that Bethesda can't seem to get away from.

@@IsItFunorNot I disagree, I think NV open world is pretty empty, they may be able to get the rpg mechanics a bit better than Bethesda, but Bethesda blows obsidian out of the water with its environmental storytelling

I beat every mission in this game. Always said I may never return but this hardcore mode makes it seem like a nightmare but worth a revisit in the future. I also bought the mini nuke anthology as a shelf looker last week and this now makes me want to experience the game on PC… hmmm

I would love to see remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas. The original games hold up today but it would be nice for them to be upgraded.

    Nice recap of FONV.
was hoping for Fallout 4 Project Mojave mod to be completed, but since GT retired/moved on, it probably never will happen.

I also didn't like New Vegas.... at first. It took a while but I did eventually have my Eureka! moment where I had the realization that the game was actually a masterpiece and it just kept. Getting. Better... The only reason I didn't like FNV at first was because I had been playing Fallout 3 non-stop and FNV was just different enough that it rubbed me the wrong way for some reason.

FO3 and FNV are some of favorite games, I go back to them a lot. But FO4 Survival Mode is my favorite fallout. I find myself going back to that one most, as long as it’s in survival mode.

Really? Wouldn't it be the opposite? Hell as I got older I began to see the weakness in writing, story, characters, protagonist impact on story ECT of many games.
Fo3 for me I only had it's rating lower the older I got. Mind you I still like it but lile Skyrim the older you get you just see the flaws in it's world, story, characters, plot, dialogue ECT

Why? What exactly do you like more about FO3 to NV? Most I know that drop the nostalgia goggles for their first FO experience tend to still like FO3 but recognise FNV as the better game, so it's odd seeing this take lol. Explain away man.

@@Hybridizm I don’t think it’s too insane to prefer one game over the other. I think one of the main reasons why some people prefer FO3 is because the capital wasteland is a setting they like more than the Mojave wasteland. I personally love both games equally but for different reasons and the atmosphere of FO3 is one of the reasons why I love that game. Also megaton is probably my favorite fallout city in general, it truly is the most apocalyptic looking cities in the franchise.
Personally though I prefer FO4 survival mode to both FO3 and FNV lol. But all 3 are excellent.
