@@NOPerative I co-sign both of you guys. In fact, I will go on the record and say that Fallout 3 is the most faithful to the original Fallout in it's tone and atmosphere. I've always said Fallout 3 is BGS' reimagining of Fallout 1 from back in 1997, in *their* own backyard (Washington D.C.) those Gothic Art-Deco buildings with the intense faces along the crumbling walls of the many buildings in the Capital Wasteland. The dark, heavy and brooding atmosphere with only small doses of black humor sprinkled throughout, with a main quest that's more tightly focused and less politicized (Unlike FO2 and FNV.)
Fallout 1 and Fallout 3 are my favorite Fallout titles in that exact order.

    • @NOPerative

@@grndmst9 FO1 & 3 hold a place with me that is unshakeable. FO2 and NV were more toward an arcade feel with me; both (2 & NV) suffered from really tight budgets and timelines though thus not surprising. FO3 held my interest well into the release of NV albeit the atrocious launch of an unplayable NV at launch.

FO4 was my first fallout game, I was 12 when it came out and it still never gave me any experiences like that. As someone who grew up playing Fallout 1 and then lived in Fallout 2, I was so stoked to learn that Fallout 3 was finally coming out and would be made by the same people behind Morrowind which was another game I enjoyed.
I remember saving up and buying the game the first day it came out and playing it on my 360 and the feeling of finally feeling like I was exploring this universe that I loved so much from a much more personal perspective is one I will never forget.
To this day Fallout is my favorite series and I absolutely love each and every entry for their own reasons.
Except 76. The only thing about it that I look back fondly on now is that it brought back my favorite version of the Pip-Boy. Besides that, it doesn't exist anymore as far as I'm aware.

    • @Reds-Retros
      @Reds-Retros 2 года назад

@@equalityforever302 dude I loved the hell out of 3 and I don't really understand why some people didnt. I do think Fallout 2 is overall a better game but Bethesda did one hell of a job of not only reinventing the series for 3d, but for the most part staying true to what makes it special, if not doubling down on it and because of them, the franchise is now one of the biggest in the world and it's still really crazy to think about because I never imagined seeing the day where so many other people would be so in love with the franchise as I was and am as it always to me felt like a very niche series back in the day. Elaborating a little on my past, I remember trying out this morrowind game back in the day on someone's xbox before later getting it for myself and playing the hell out of it. Then the news broke that THOSE guys were making the next mainline entry and my excitement skyrocketed imagining the possibilities of a Fallout in the style of Morrowind.
When the game finally came out I think at the time my only real complaint was how the BoS and Enclave were super dumbed down and turned into good VS evil, whereas those factions were always both a lot more complicated and morally grey than that.
I do think Bethesda has since done an excellent job of rectifying this in Fallout 4, while still cleverly maintaining that the Capital Wasteland BoS were a very different faction and not the true BoS.
On another note, I'm super excited for the newly announced TV series but after the whole Halo show thing that happened... I can't help but be slightly worried. I do trust that Bethesda won't let anyone screw it up though.. Fingers crossed.

@@Reds-Retros Nope, nope nope, Now you're saying 4 is good as well? 4 makes 3 look like a masterpiece. Maybe you should playthrough the originals and NV again. Bethesda games are made for tweens who ask mommy to buy it for them because a celebrity is in it. You can just see the intelligence of the writers in 1, 2, and NV. Like Arcade Gannon. Literally the entire character couldn't have been written by bethesda because of how intellectual he his because bethesda doesn't have writers smart enough to write such a complex script. In 3, I have noticed patterns in dialogue showcasing they were written by the same person. The repetition of certain words, and phrases. Not heard of in 1, 2, and NV. 3 was written for idiots by idiots, and it shows. And don't even get me started on 4. 4 dialogue options, and they don't even tell you what you're going to say. Anybody with an IQ above 80 thinks fallout 3, 4, and 76 is shit. Sorry for the essay, it's just a shame to see a fellow original fallout enjoyer such as yourself stoop so low as to like a game intended for a... less mature audience.

@@equalityforever302 sorry to disappoint you I guess?
Fallout is one of the closest things to my heart and every single entry is near and dear to me besides BoS (Ps2/Xbox) and 76. I have replayed both NV and 3 in the last 12 months (literally got done doing another 100% run of 3 just a few weeks ago) and now I'm revisiting 4 and my God, what a wonderful thing it is. It's a shame you just flat out don't like 4 because for every thing I don't like about it there are 10 more things I love about it. Sure, the forced voiced protag, one word dialogue choices, overall role playing sucks and lack of different ways to solve problems is disappointing, 100% ...but in terms of pure gameplay, fun factor, open world exploration and freedom, customisability, companions, power armor, artistic direction and visuals it's the best in the franchise in my opinion.
Then came Far Harbor and Nuka World, which are the better than any Fallout 3 DLC in my opinion and actually offered a lot of choice in comparison to the base game.
I'm my own person with my own opinion as are you, but saying you expressing how you seem think mine are effectively invalid now simply because I love all the mainline entries is a little bit sad.
Life's too short to not enjoy the best things about it, and to me, Fallout is easily one of them.

@@Reds-Retros Glad to hear it, man. I just can't get into any of the bethesda fallouts besides 3. I know I have been a bit flip floppy and for that I apologize. Sometimes I go through spells like that. The stuff I said about 3 was actually more about 4 than 3, I just typed 3 then stuck with it. My mental state has been deteriorating rapidly recently, and I don't mean to vent to strangers online, but I've been replaying 3 recently and seeing all these people bashing one of my favorite games over and over combined with my existing condition really made me rant about games that I like as if I don't like them. That being said, 4 is ok. But I just can't bring myself to beat it. It just seems so uninteresting to me compared to all the others. New Vegas is my favorite atm. 3 was, but then I played a shit ton of NV and it got me hooked. Now I'm playing 3, it'll probably be 3 again in a few months. Fallout 3 was one of the first RPGs I completed, and it's among my favorite games of all time. I like how well it was paced and structured. It took me roughly 40 hours to do all 40 missions (well, except the Nuka Cola one), and each felt quite unique. There was no filler content, each area felt different compared to the other, and, similarly to Elden Ring, I often had to use my navigational and map-reading skills in order to be able to get from one place to another. I liked how focused and dense the experience was.
I know that New Vegas is a fan favorite, and it might have more choices and consequences, but 99% of the time, I like to play a game once and move on, and Fallout 3 was just a much better experience overall for me. To me, New Vegas felt bloated and often dull, with a samey-looking world and many large empty, and dead areas. I remember I read in a Hungarian magazine back then that the devs originally wanted to include a car for traveling, but I guess it was scrapped for the final game. So... the game's map was originally designed with a vehicle in mind, which explains the large empty spaces, but those were not really fun to traverse on foot in the final game.

I'm 46 now and fallout 3 came during a really hard but important part of my life.
ID recently at that point endured a minor stroke and after that rheumatic fever. During that time I was laid up and unable to do much, and though I had been a heavy gamer till around 06 when ID finished KOTOR I'd kinda gotten outta gaming for a Lil bit.
I rem3mber seeing the trailer, the one you showed that starts upclose on the radio and pans out eventually to seeing a brotherhood of steel member and I thought "Damn, maybe taking a trip back into gaming to see what this stormtrooper like character was all about might be fun." So I had a relative pick it up for me and I had an Xbox 360 that wasn't getting used that I figured it was time to break in.
At the time i was thinkin almost 24/7 about how really ill I was and how I could hardly move my limbs without alotta pain and that realistically i probably wouldn't live long... I was in a dark place then. But my hands were reasonably functional and I embarked on the fallout 3 journey of everything it was... At first it was hard for me to find my way but I had the time and as time ticked I finally figured it out.
Eventually I forgot about being so sick, instead thinking about things like how I needed to save before the abandoned barn random instance so I could repeat it till I got the alien crash that would drop the alien blaster, or making sure I picked up a few lawn mower blades to finish my shishkebab... So many things that were so much better than sitting and looking at a wall waiting for some final end that I had been sure was coming.
Obviously I'm still here and that year that was the worst in my life is a major memory for me and it has alotta bad... But it has alotta good, like realizing if my hands could play the game then eventually my legs could walk with me again... And they did. Like finding so much joy when they made the expansion that let me live through the end game sacrifice (Though I still dont know why my buddy Fawkes didnt simply handle it and let me live in the first place), alotta memories that whether good or bad they were there to be had and lived.
Fallout 3 will always be maybe the most important game in my life to me and when I saw this it really made me happy seeing you mention all the stuff in the game that I'm so glad everyone else experienced too, stuff that was so original, and honestly stuff that for good or ill was maybe the last time Bethesda ever gave us true choice in our path to decide what was good or evil for us
Anyway this went too long... But thank you for making a point about how great fallout 3 is. Sure I love new Vegas but my love for it came from 3.
A great game and a huge memory for me. It really was a game that they just dont make em like that anymore. As open a world as all these recent open world games are, they just dont feel as big... Or as memorable.

Will never forget getting this game from my uncle on Christmas 2009 for PS3. Had no idea what to expect, entirely unfamiliar with Fallout or Bethesda. I played it all night that Christmas and loved it immediately. This is my ‘before and after’ video game. Just being able to go anywhere and interact with anything, choose my own path. Having full conversations with NPCs, choosing what I said. I had never played anything even remotely like it. Blew my mind and opened a larger door for me into video games.
It’s not without its problems though. Especially by today’s standards, if I want to be less nostalgic. The combat is hard to go back to, the GOTY edition is deeply flawed, and the barriers surrounding downtown DC are an atrocity. It would benefit greatly from a Mass Effect style remaster. Here’s hoping.

I watch retro rebound and everything from you, all the old nostalgia stuff but man no game has hit my nostalgia as hard as this one. New vegas, Oblivion, none of these being talked about hit as hard as this talk here. I think honestly this was probably one of the most impactful games for me as a gamer, I remember just watching my older brother play this and it was so fun just to watch for me but was such an intimidating looking game that I was almost afraid to play it haha. One day though I pulled up my big boy pants and sank my teeth into this game... What a trip this game was. I remember going out into the wasteland being so timid and clueless and as I played and interacted with things, talked to people around the wastes I became so in love with this game before even realizing it. This game 100% turned me on to a genre I constantly starve for now. The Outer Worlds, Skyrim, Wasteland 3. These games feel like fractured pieces scattered out that use to be whole. TOW has the amazing dialogue and world telling atmosphere, amazing story in its base game/DLC but the gun variety lacks and makes the gunplay feel more lacking compared to FO3 and New Vegas. Skyrim is missing core features of choice and consequence which makes the game feel kinda bland after a while cause you realize the choice doesn't matter when you can do it all anyways. Wasteland is eye-symmetric so the interactions and everything you do in that game, while amazing as its own game, just isn't the same as what brought me to this genre in the first place. FO3 is by no means perfect but its a lot of things games can't seem to hit all in one game today.... I lost myself in nostalgia

I then continued to play it religiously for a month, got every trophy. It was everything I wanted. I liked the green tint, I liked how desolate the land was, and how gritty, and dirty everything was. It was great being introduced to Fallout 3 first then any of the other fallout games. When Fallout 4 came out I was hyped but something wasn't right about it compared to F3. Fallout 3 was the first game I bought for my PS3. I got it from a close-out sale at a local video rental store. GOTY Edition for $20. I was so excited. I'd played FO, FO2, and FOTactics (wildly underrated, minus the game-ending glitches). I'd waited YEARS for a new Fallout and was hugely skeptical of 3. I read zero reviews and learned nothing about it before I got it; I didn't want it spoiled at all.
And I absolutely loved it. It was kinda janky, but I could learn those janks and play with them to my advantage. Only issue (and it was a HUGE one that stretched into FO:NV) was having the 10MB save file issue. As soon as I got bigger than 10MB, the game would start crashing randomly. By the time I got to Point Lookout, I could barely play it, and that really sucked.
Anyway: thanks for bringing this back up, Matty. Love the content. You are a super hardworking dude. I really admire your work ethic. Excellent work, man.

For me, Fallout 4 didn't feel as 'Open world Exploration' as Fallout 3 did. As a kid I was a noob at this game and had like 5 saves only progressing a few hours into it because I was always playing on my cousin's, bro's console before they got home from school. I remember each time it being different though, like I'd run to this cabin and decide to run West or something where I'd discover the village BEFORE the super mutants kidnap that lady and I was actually there when they came and I stopped it from happening. Decisions felt impactful, I'd save before nuking the city and be like, nah I don't like being evil time to go back and live my days as a good guy. Having played Fallout 4 recently for the first time, I just felt like the random encounters had 0 impact. Dnno how to describe it but I wasn't hooked. New Vegas was fun for me as a kid because I just wanted to get to the big shiny safe zone and do the quests with all the NPCS there.

Because all the game does at first is direct you towards Benny, without one clear path, even going out of the way to make the direct paths harder. I didn't appreciate 3 at first because the main quest feels so important and I just followed the obvious path.

One thing I loved about Fallout 3 was playing alone in the dark for the first time you felt like you were in a desolate wasteland. I wandered and explored and there was danger at every corner. I finally found big town the biggest civilization outside of the vault I found at the time. Then you had to fight supermutants and you had to explore their lair and there were gore bags and skulls and it creeped you out. The radio helped to maintain my sanity. Listening to President Eden helped to ground you to make you feel like you aren't alone in the world. Like there is hope.
Now a lot of this is greatly diminished after you've spent hundreds of hours in the game, and played through the stories several times, but that first time it was an experience.

I paid $8 for a used copy of F3 many years ago. Might be the best $8 I ever spent. I was hooked. Between F3, FNV, F4 and all the expansion packs, I've spent thousands of hours on the Fallout series. Love those three. Don't care about anything else in the Fallout genre. Really looking for ward to NV2 or F5.

I played Fallout since I was 5-6 and now I’m 13 and I still play these games on my Xbox 360 which is still alive even when I dropped it on its face before💔

Tale of Two Wastelands runs F3 on F New Vegas engine. It links the two games, and you can get back and forth via train between the two games (Vegas to DC 10 game days). It's pretty dang awesome, but is a bear to install everything. Totally worth it.

I remember buying the collectors edition for this. I still have the lunch box and bobblehead on my shelf to this day.

Thank you so much Matty for bringing this classic back into light. I also like that you presented your personal background context of how you first experienced this game, as we all have are personal backdrop of how we picked up this game. I remember playing this on my old gateway FX laptop and realizing this game is like nothing I've played before at that time. I was just coming out of the Metal Gear phase which is awesome in it's won right, but "This" game was my first experience where " I build" the character. You could say it broke me into RPG genre.

Fallout New Vegas was my first, I thought the guy on the cover looked cool and I thought it was made by the people who made Oblivion. Played the hell out of it and adored it, found out there was a Fallout 3 and got that too and played it and adored it.
I've gone back to NV a few times but I think its time to go back to the capital wasteland!

It's funny how he says he hated it on first playing it, so did I and I sold it. But for some reason I got it back again and I suddenly enjoyed it and I now consider it to be one of the greatest games ever made.

Fallout 3 was the only (non-isometric) Fallout that I felt hunted in. The world really feels against you the moment you step out of the vault.

It's difficult for me to see the fight between 3 and NV, too. NV seems like it's just 3, but with an extra year and a half of development... which is precisely what it is. It IS better, but not so much that it's ahead of the curve. It's right where it belonged, and definitely the best it could be for its time... as was 3.

I completely agree. NV is just a slightly more polished 3. Story and characters are roughly the same level to me.

NV had less than half the development time as fallout 3 my man

@@IAmJunker AND more than half the assets were already made for them. That was brought up in the video as well
