THANK YOU for confirming my sentiments toward the less-than-ideal time navigation in Sky Guide. I LOVE the app otherwise (it is beautiful!) and it's become my main starting point for pre-visualizing shots of planet conjunctions, ISS passes, etc. But fast forwarding and rewinding past a specific moment in time 3 or 4 times like it's a VHS tape is something I've considered begging the developers to consider addressing.

I replaced my iPhone 8 with an iPhone 13 Pro in December. By the time I returned home from the Apple Store it was dark so my first experiments were nightscape shots. Relative to my expectations for a phone camera I was blown away. First shots were handheld, but I promptly mounted the phone onto a lightweight tripod with ball head and phone clamp. I find the phone handy for documenting the scene and setup when doing nightscape photography and other such nocturnal adventures. Of course the phone is a long way from challenging DSLR and mirrorless for actual nightscape photography, but for a shirt pocket device with an already astonishing range of applications, nighttime snapshots is a nice addition.

Satellite's 🛰️ are constant and wherever you look one pops up.I was recently camping in the English Peak District National Park and I only had my 5x10 Zeiss Mini Quick Monocular with me but I picked up M13 in it and even in that narrow field of view 2 satellites drifted through the field of view.

Great vlog and Great Photos!! I use Stellarium Plus, Sky Guide & SkySafari 7 Pro on my iPad and iPhone 13 Pro and love the night sky apps! And whenever I do astrophotography with my iPhone, I use NightCap since it had different modes (like Stars Mode, ISS mode, light trails etc). Yet again, great vlog 😃👍

I have captured zodiacal light in November....that too post sunset.....i am from India...and believe as we live close to the equator, we got bigger window of months and visibility of the zodiacal light....

When I read the title i thought you were going to do a high magnification with say a real telescope so we see the shape and sometimes a bit of detail. I've seen some cool efforts. But it still turned out a great vid I do love Orion long exposure to bring out that epic detail I'm in light polluted Watford and a full time job so cant travel as often. Nice work keep it up. I'm definitely going to Turkey this year and probably stay a bit am of Turk origin got plenty of family to visit in dark places.
I'am going to integrate iPhone photos ops during outreach episode as soon as the Moon reappears. It will give the viewers something they can take home. Great session, Alyn!
I'm surprised how many of you advanced photographers go to a lot of effect to get some superb shots and don't use our tell people that it's best to use a red colour beam torch as it doesn't affect your eyes etc! You have some lovely country to use up there.

I noticed you polar aligning with the laser. Is that the one which allows you to calibrate it and if so did it require calibration?

It still amazes me how far cameras in phones have come, especially in recent years.
Were you not tempted to try this with a Google Pixel and it's astrophotography mode? The newer sensor in the Pixel 6 is a huge step up from previous models. I'll be trying mine out properly this weekend in Wales (fingers crossed for clear skies!) and will compare it to my Canon R5 (non astro modified).
New sub here, loving your content! I´ve been out of astrophotography for a year or two myself and have been focusing on nature and wildlife but I´m slowly finding my way back and will try to produce more astro content as well 🙂

Great video again, Alyn :) Love you work. The satellites sure are annoying and sadly increasing in number constantly. Have you used any automatization to remove them in timelapses? I'm trying to find an automated solution, since I shoot a lot of night sky timelapses. I've heard Pixinsight might do the trick. Have you experienced that software or can you point out some other software or workaround to achieve automatic satellite trail removal from series of single exposures (not stacking)? If it's even possible.. Thanks for your videos and have a great day!
Notjhing automatic I'm afraid
satellites aren't a problem for deep sky, we have pixel rejection but nothing for timelapses, I don't mind them though
@@King0Random Right.. I guess it should be technically possible, at least to some extent of efficiency, but such software/functionality hasn't been created yet apparently.. Yeah it's not too bad in the middle of winter when most of the dark time of day the sun is far below the horizon. It's a bit different story in spring/fall when sun doesn't set so much below the horizon and plethora of satellites are to be seen not to mention captured by camera. This accounts more here in the northern latitudes (65*N my location) as the sun apparently travels in more horizontal trajectory.
Fabulous shot on the Sony. The iPhone result is kind of what I expected - raw isn't really raw. Someone else mentioned trying a manual camera app, not sure if there is one for the iPhone that allows full control, but there certainly are for Android. I get some great shots on my Nokia 8.5 at night.
Another great video Alyn ... inspirational as always. Are you using the Sony A7iv yet ?, I would really like to hear your'e thoughts on it as i'm thinking of upgrading from the A7s for astro .. cheers.

IPhone ProRAW isn’t the same as RAW. The iPhone still adds its corrections but supposedly you can change them in post processing. Maybe with a special app.

Thanks Alyn, great video. You mentioned it was going to be a bright ISS pass. I was wondering what conditions/info do you use to determine that. I've had mixed luck over the years with clear skies and still a faint trail. Any info would be appreciated.
It gives the magnitude in the app ISS Detector. Brightness will depend on angle with the Sun as well as whether you're capturing during twilight or not

Totally agree about StarLink. Although I appreciate Musk using his money for launches to ISS and even to aim for Mars; its pretty disgusting that he is allowed to destroy the whole worlds view of the night sky (including the professionals)
why go to an iphone a company that dictates to you what apps you can use and how you do things android is so much more open, but like the video for the astro done on the Sony cam

I like your work but that was 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Do you know the stars are just projections ? Like they told us 1000s of years ago, "they are for signs" And you think that NASA and their cronies dont know how to project images of even fly small drones across your night sky ?
Why do you flat earthers love to use those laughing emojis so much? Guess it indicates low intelligence. The ISS isn’t a projection. People have captured it transit the sun, and like any solid object, it blocks out light. Also where are they projecting it from? You can track its path and the way it moves across the world doesn’t even make any practical sense if it were a projection.
I need a night there! @astrohbf are you game?
