Incredible astro vlog Alyn! Inspiring as always. This vlog is your best yet! Visiting California is definitely high on my list of places to visit for astro. That and probably visiting Utah. I wouldn't mind going back to Oregon again either. It was a real honor meeting you in-person at the Crater Lake and Oregon Coast workshop Alyn. I learned so much from you! I love photohraphy and filmography. Never tried astrophotography , getting a deep interest recently but this video is giving me some kind of nostalgic vibes like a hallmark of all the childhood memories of mine .I used to love stars, when I was a child I dreamt of becoming an astronaut,I would always go up to the rooftop of my then house with a mattress and sleep there and start on counting stars until I fall asleep but with time I lose interest in stars. I wouldnt say I lost interest since the thumbnail of this video got me sucked up to the video and I am still in here after 30 minutes which is an emotional testament of the love for stars and sky that I always had and it once again ignited that feeling inside me and yeah you earned a new member in the channel.
And also I am starting astrophotography from tomorrow cause your passion and love for stars reignited that motivation, that inspiration ,that will to starting to love In ME once again.
    I am starting Astrophotography cos'
When I see the night sky I just want to dwell in them and feel the presence of every star surrounding me.
It gives me so much peace and something tells me that my real home is somewhere there.
It's very hard to explain what I feel, but I know for sure that this feeling is very very deep.
    Thanks Alyn,thank you so much.
And great work Alyn. This vlog was amazing. The photos were absolutely stunning. I loved it.
Never put down your love for your passion!
    ❤❤❤🌠🌌

Wish I knew what I was doing when I was in Canyonlands, May of last year. I learned a lot from channels like yours so I got the perfect night on Mauna Kea in September and got my first Milky Way shots. For a total beginner, I still look at them in awe. Thank you for all your instruction. I'd like to get to more places to take night shots. Hard in Northeast USA....

Eureka Dunes and Ubehebe Crator would be great spots if/when you get back to Death Valley. Between Lake Tahoe and the Colorado River is some of my most favorite terrain to visit. A camper van definitely is the way to go. There are a lot of areas in Death Valley that would be great for astro photography but are so far from the Hotels / Campgrounds that it's better to have something to spend the night in. Also, end of March beginning of April has a good chance of showers that causes the super blooms.

Love it Alyn! Your film making skills keep growing. I appreciate your putting the image and EXIF on the slide. Very helpful. Last trip at Bryce I decided to leave the tracker at camp for 2 nights just to make my life light and simple, and the A7iv modified is completely amazing - even without stacking. Also love your color balancing for the desert. I have some editing to do before submitting for this month photo review!!

Fantastic stuff. Glad to see and hear that the Sony survived the drop.
I was planning on an hour long drive to Bortle 1 skies just East of Reno/Sparks Nevada this weekend but the friggin smoke from the fire 🔥 by Yosemite came over all weekend as well as a weather band encroaching each night. That destroyed my hopes. However, the next upcoming weekend off is still looking good and still at or near new Moon.
I will be doing static and video shots of the Milky Way and some eyepiece astrophotography of M31 and various targets within the Milky Way/Sagittarius region.
I'll be using my Nokia X100, 48mp quad binned with Zeiss optics!
This camera phone comes with a pro camera app with 20sec exposure capabilities and such, it blows me away with it's night image capability.
A single 20sec shot at like ISO1600 or so reveals M31 core and a very tiny little bit of spiral arm structure as faint fuzz light. (At Bortle 4)
I expect far superior pictures at Bortle 1.
If I were to drive an extra hour, I'd have access to pristine dark sky with magnitude 22.00+ or Bortle 0.5/0.25!
I think the Bortle 1 sky will be easily sufficient for my cellphone astrophotos.
So far my Bortle 4 magnitude limit on phone is about 7.5 on average with occasional 8.0 to near 9.0 when the atmosphere allows it.
I am hoping to average mag 8.0/9.0 to mag 10.0+ possibly under the Bortle 1 sky.
I can't wait to play with ISO and drop the exposure times for more clarity, less trailing.
I shoot without guiding, just a tripod selfie stick.
For eyepiece astro I'll be bringing my 90mm Make & 110mm Newt both with my 40mm eyepiece.
With my old unbinned 12mp phone I was able to image the Orion nebula with a single 1/3sec shot on the 110mm Newt.
I will do my best cellular astrophotography very soon!
My X100 will be 4x as clear and far brighter than my old LG Arista (I cannot wait!)
My recent Bortle 4 sky location was North of Tahoe at the Immigrant Gap exit just off I-80, the Milky Way image I got was mind blowing from just a cellphone!
I was raised in the San Jose, CA area of the Bay Area and 45 years ago you could occasionally glimpse some brighter Milky Way areas but as I grew and become interested in astronomy I noticed that the Milky Way was no longer available for glimpsing in the Bay.
I eventually moved to NM under Bortle 3 sky but wind on the open plains was horrible all the time and was only able to astro in town when wind gets blocked by house and even though not ideal I did still have Bortle 4 sky in town and fantastic fantastic viewing one 15° night/early morning and used my 6in f/10 or 1500mm focal length scope.
That scope froze over on the outside and eyepiece was so cold that my eyeball heat limited me to very short views or it started dewing the lens.
I'm not a fan of staying out in the freezing cold until my nose, ears and toes are on the edge of frostbite but when the viewing is good you man up and hang in there to the last minutes!
Too bad it's still warm out West and hot pixels will be my enemy but with Bortle 1 sky I can drop ISO to limit the hot pixels and still pull a decent image.
I will use these new images to practice some stacking for noise reduction.
I'm only a few years in on my astrophotography journey and do I work a lot so it's been slow going.
In the next 3 months I plan to buy a 6in refractor with tracking, this for planetary mostly but I could squeeze some deep sky targets in with a 58mm wide angle eyepiece or so maybe.
    🤔
I can also piggyback my phone on it for some interesting wide shots without the dang trailing and will be easier to stack for less noise.
    Just saying!
I like the work done with that Sony cam but modified or not that thing is a bit pricey.
I'm on the cheap for now.
The 6in refractor with auto-guiding and tracking is only $1,700! That's cheap but very expensive to me, I can make it happen with just a handful of overtime shifts at work.
Should be a fun toy under Bortle 1 sky, visually and with photo.

I was curious if you had obtained a special use permit to shoot at the Ancient Bristlecone's at night and how that worked? Great work! I tried a solo trip to Trona Pinnacles the night planets were aligning a few weeks ago. I failed so hard because it was so scary. I was expecting to see some campers around but there was no one but donuting big pick up truck. I had to drive back home to LA 3 hours after taking 10 shots after midnight :D Your video inspired me to go back there again!

Nice. You were in my neck of the woods. I work in Yucca Valley right next to Joshua Tree. Just found your channel from fototripper. I was in Joshua Tree with a startracker on June 20th.

Are you using the a7siii amd SLOG-3 for your vlogging camera? I want to try to take a bit of BTS video with either my a7iv or a7iii next time I go out, but last time I tried shooting video with either at night it didn't work out nearly as well as yours did.

Yeah they're nowhere near as good as the S I'm afraid. Mine is also full spectrum mod so it gets +1.5 stops more light

Totally agree with what you said in the first 5 mins. Watching your self and nightscapeimages I found that even little old me could take photos of the Milky Way with a DSLR I got hooked! Just a shame I live in such a cloudy place haha

Astounding imagery Alyn, absolutely love the alien like landscapes of California. It'd be Tayrona for me, Ian Norman really did hook a lot of people with his work didn't he!

I really hope more people can know Lassen National Park is also a great park for astrophotography in California. By the way, in Death Valley, the Ubehebe crater is my favourite.

Late to the party..but absolutely loved the vlog 🌌👍 thank you. Joshua tree was my first astro experience (city girl). No plan. No core & light pollution from the distant valley because it was November - straight single simple exposures BUT damn I was just happy to be under clear starry skies! Death valley looks super dark & amazing 🤞 one day!

Hi Alyn, I was Stephen friend, the two who leave earlier do to being so cold, great video and encouraging to return to the Area for more astrophotography. I wanted to show one of the photos I took that night; but do not know how to do it. In a way I am glad we leave earlier than expected and leave the spot for you to take additional great photos, great video and photos!

I had, the exact same experience one night at the Mobius Arch. My BFF and I arrived at dusk, set up in an ideal position, and just as the MW became visible, the San Jose Photography Club, all 12 of them, arrived.
"Uh, you've got the best spot,"
    "Uh-huh, we do."
"Well, we'll just shoot around you."
    "Yup."
For me, the Owens Valley is the Mecca and Al Medina for landscape photography.

Now I’m so excited to try Death Valley. I’m a native Californian. I was just in Joshua Tree last month. And Trona Pinnacles for the first time at the end of April and the beginning of May. I agree such an amazing place out of this world. Next time you come you have to check out mono lake. It is also very cool. You were so close to it when u were in Bishop. Not sure though if the Milky Way was in the correct location to photograph it at that time. You really do an amazing job! I love you eye for composition. I’m still learning how to do astro landscapes. I need to learn how to do milky Way Panoramic‘s. You do them so well. Will look so see if you have a video on them. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and photographs Alyn. So inspiring!
