For me, as someone following in your footsteps, this video was the most impactful.
I loved watching every single upload. You were one of the few people who I'd drop everything for just to watch a new video.
I'm grateful for everything you have done to inspire us all and thankful for this huge collection of videos you left behind. I will watch from a different perspective now, but one of wonder and inspiration nonetheless.
Wherever you are now, I'm sure you've got clear skies 💔.
I am so glad Alyn got to live a life he loved. RIP
R.I.P. Dear Alyn. We are all better for your efforts. You were an inspiration to thousands of photographers, and you will be missed. I feel fortunate that I was smart enough to purchase your book last year. It will always hold a place of honor in our home.
did he die?

I really enjoyed listening to your story Alyn. There are quite a few similarities to mine these past years. I'm so pleased you've been recognised by so many people for your work . .it's great that you have raised the profile of nightscape photography around the world and given so many people enormous joy in the process. All the very best for the future mate .. I'll be following the journey.
Really sad. Glad you were doing what you loved, more than most achieve in a lifetime.
Happy for you Alyn that you’re following your heart..
Your passion for Astro is amazing .
I like your honesty pal, well done.
This is so moving . RIP, and sincere condolences to all who knew and loved him. I only heard of Alyn last week. I hope these marvelous videos, a testament to his work and passion and appreciation of natural beauty remain online. It's so sad...
The best way to end a Sunday 😀
Crap today is Sunday? Ughhh Monday’s...
RIP Alyn. So glad you quit your job and LIVED.
This Is an Inspiring Story Alyn...!!! I myself is a Young Astronomer/Astrophotographer and This is an inspiration to me. Thanks a lot Man! This was A really Great Story, love your workl!!!
Glad to hear it thanks so much!
YOUR EVERYWHERE
Amazing story Alyn. Hats off to you 😊
I had a same feeling when tried a long exposure with my smartphone. I was like what!!! Though the shots were worst the feeling was just awesome 😂 And then just started looking for the creators and found about you and man you are great. Inspired by you i started astrophotography and today the joy of seeing the milky way on the screen of my dslr is just out of the world. Thank you for your work!!😇
you deserve wayy more subs... i think it's because people think you need expensive gear for astro photography... and they don't pay attention so much...
let me give you a simple idea... make videos like how to do astro photography with budget gear or even how to do best with smartphone.... these videos will get way more reach... and there are a lot of people who are interested in these...
Those stars in the background now have a new friend, RIP and thank you for the inspiration x
Such a great loss for the photography world 😔😔 young and talented buddy
I've done the same, Alyn. Studied physics in astronomy at university, got a good job afterwards. I quit my job over a year ago to pursue astrophotography full time - and it's been the best decision of my life!
I don't understand how someone makes money from doing this?
@@johnnycash4034the video you commented literally answers this question 😂😂
You are such an inspiration Alyn! Love your story :D
Right back at ya Helena. Such an inspiration for young people, for women, for astronomers of all levels and you have astronomical potential! Keep it up
Hi Alyn. This video neatly sums up why we follow and support you. You're the best at what you do. Simple as that. 'Nuff said mate. P.S. Define "very, very soon" for the book publication ! LOL ;)
I'm just finishing my degree in Aerospace from Swansea Uni and have also found myself drawn to photography, particularly astro and landscapes, wondering what my next steps will be
Natural born teacher. Thanks for sharing the passion & knowledge. I always wondered why you were in Turkey...dark skies n good times 😏!!
Great story Alyn! I have some parallels but am not nearly as hard working as you!
That was super enjoyable, I watched the whole way threw and didn’t get bored 1 bit! Great video Alyn and thank you patreon ❤️
You end by saying 'probably boring', but your videos never are!
Not only hit by pandemic but you got hit by a health issue.. and I was worried. As soon as you told us that your are getting better ..Then we found some peace..
Having been incredibly fortunate to have attended one of Alyn’s workshops in 2019, I can say that Alyn is a) a great teacher, b) very generous with helping others learn good photographic information, c) very quietly but immensely enthusiastic about his profession, and d)I found him to be very approachable to just chat with too.
Thanks Alyn, you're the reason I have my first DSLR and few shots of Neowise and the Moon.
Thank You for Sharing with Us. Have been following you since 3 years, have learnt so so many things about astrophotography from You. Thank You to Patreon Supporters 🙏 . Looking forward to your Book. Take care. Stay safe
Great story Alyn..no matter what your past. You are a inspiration to any young man. You learned from those missteps and found what you love to do being astrophotographer. It shows in your passion for what you do…thanks for sharing Alyn..all the best to you.
Been watching you for a while since i start to show signs of being backyard astrophotographer.
Glad you arent taking drugs good stuff legend. I subbed your channel
Nice hearing your story Alyn :-)
Great video Alyn. I know theres a ton of people trying to find a way to quit their jobs to pursue something they're passionate about, especially post COVID. This was definitely an inspiring video. You see all these vloggers out here with such high enthusiastic over the top energy, and not all of us are built that way. You've shown that you're one of those people that can still do it even as someone who comes off as very chill and matter of fact, and I can appreciate that and look up to that. Thanks for your content!
Fantastic story Alyn. I admire your honesty. I myself fell down a rabbit hole of bad behaviour & to hear someone I watch be in a similar boat, and come out the other side and chase their dreams, is truly inspiring... so thank you! Clear skies 🤙🏻
im a noob... i just ordered a MSM Nomad...i just found your channel... i just learned you've passed away...that makes me sad... Alyn you make a positive difference in peoples lives...thank you.
So glad you persisted with building your business. You've inspired me and so many other people. So much respect for this video. Brave of you to be so honest! 👍🏻
Hello
RIP Alyn🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 You will be missed!
Great advice! I've always been wondering what is the song or soundtrack you used for your intro?
Definitely not boring....great to hear your story. :-)
RIP Alyn. Kudos to living your life your way.. .Your work will live on.
Cruise peacefully through the cosmos 🌠
Only recently discovered Alyn's videos. So sorry to hear he is no longer with us, but it looks from these comments as though he inspired many people with his enthusiasm for astrophotography. Got my first milky way shot ever at the weekend, and the fact that it was pretty good is due in no small part to Alyn's excellent advice. RIP.
Quite a story. Glad to see how someone so far down in the dumps can pull their life together and become very successful. An inspiration, looking forward to more of videos and your book.
Had me hanging off every word. I did a degree in Physics and Astronomy and ended up unhappily doing electronic engineering. Glad it’s turned out well and glad you make these videos.
Thanks so much!
I did the opposite, Electronics, then aged 35 decided to retrained, I now and have done for 20yrs now in Medical Physics in the NHS. Sadly I became a patient last Thursday and watching this video from my ward bed
@@TelfordO Good to hear the first bit - not so good to hear the latter. Hope things turn out okay.
@@TelfordO sorry to hear that, hope you're back to good health soon!
I just leant of his passing. Saddened to hear the news. He introduced me to many aspects of astrophotography. RIP.
I thank all of the Astrophotographers on RUclips who create tutorials and explain the equipment.
I quit my job to become full time Share Market trader, content writer and to purse my hobbies of astronomy and Retro-Computing. Its been two years now and i am still struggling to match my 9 to 5 job payout but i am able to sustain myself with what i am about to make now. The best part is, i am no longer a slave of salary based job and tied to work schedule. I am free to do what i love and what i want 😊. Bottomline, i am Happy.
Hello! Thank you a lot for this video! I'm only 14 years old, but I'm already having SkyWatcher Star Adventurer 2i and good DSLR astromodified camera. You are very inspiring me and helping to choose my hobby. Thank you a lot! :)
You were never boring Alyn. Such a talent!.. Clear skies mate! God Bless xxx
What you said about that Milky Way video shot by the Sony A7S is how I felt when I found your channel! You are inspiring and your enthusiasm is catching. I love watching your adventures! Thanks so much for sharing.
Started my Automotive/ Motorsport company during the pandemic + Overcoming the ODDS
Hi Alyn,
What about a video about the BIOLUMINESCENT PLANKTON 😀
I have been to Caswell and 3 cliffs to photograph, and I am part on the Facebook group as well.
As I have never seen it, a video showing how to photograph it, would be very helpful.
Just seen your photo from last night..
Awesome ! It takes a special kind of person to reveal so much about themselves . Thanks ! Very inspirational , very authentic and genuine . I appreciate good dialogue where every second word is NOT "like" , "you know" , "for sure", "right" , etc . LOL . I hope you're managing the "Drugs" issue . Cheers . /SRK
Wow. What a really no holds barred honest reality view.(and got to say brave) SO IMPRESSED. Love the vids. Love the pics. Really looking forward to the book
I didnt expect the blunt honesty in your story. Thank you because its very inspiring. You do what I dream.
Great life story (so far) Alyn. Been watching your amazing vids for about 2 years now.. Love the one's in the van! Keep up the great work. Btw.. Did anyone spot the meteor at 6.01??
I started as a Mechanical engineer in R&D doing design and had to do fabrication/welding because I worked my way thru college working in my brother's metal shop. I didn't appreciate being a welder-fabricator as I didn't need a degree to do that, but they did pay for my Master's degree in aerospace. Left and worked for a company doing space projects which is what I got my degrees for.
Wow I am really surprised to know that you are a Mechanical Design Engg. because I am your big Fan and I am also working in same field. working as a CAD draftsman and Piping Design Engg. for my bread and butter only. but what I am really passionate about is Astronomy, I have built my 6 inch Travelscope from Scratch. And now working on 12 inch mirror -fine polishing stage. I also dream to quit my job and work full time in Astronomy.
Awesome video Alyn great listening to your journey best job in the world is one that’s your passion I’ve spent the last 18 years working as a press photographer love it to bitsi spent almost every day since I was 12 with a camera in my hands it’s all I ever wanted to do I started my RUclips channel about 3 years ago during a massive low I needed something new to focus on best thing I’ve ever done huge learning curve. Deffo need a square space site tho that’s next on my list 📷📷📷
NOT BORING!!! thank you Alyn, great video, keep it up!!!!!!
I'm not jealous. Honest. :D if you ever get to Australia, come to the outback. Crazy dark skies. My work is a dark sky sanctuary too, and we get mostly clear skies all through winter.
A likeable guy....and certainly one that can take an alternative opinion of this video than the army of comments below. But you've really not described here much of anything about 'astrogeography'. You've articulated -- and quite earnestly, no doubt -- how to 'market' an astrogeographical interest. This is important, to be sure, but it is also reflective of our age where 'marketing' exceeds everything, including aesthetic, passion, practice and propriety. One could insert any number of practices into your outline with the same result (say..... veganism, classic car interest, or toenail painting, etc.). Commercialization is important, no doubt....but...it also has the end effect (perhaps not yet realized) of converting the act into a quantifiable revenue stream. Yes... I know....
'this is important'. But so is sweating and defecation. These things 'will' be done.... the real focus is how to do them while maintaining the joie de vivre of self beyond simple and momentary declaration of it (which is 'not' addressed here). Again.... no insults are meant here... I am a fan.... but mass market mediums and the alienation that they ultimate convey (or enhance) is 'also' a critical bit of revelation that, one day, someone...somewhere.... might address. Good luck to you.
Thanks for this amazing vid!!! Hopefully I will have a dslr camera someday, I only use mobile phones for astrophotography hahaha. I'm just 16 and I love doing this hobby.
I'm editing my milkyway stacked panorama(a test only) while listening to your video. Clear skies!!! Keep shooting!!!
I'm sure you will. If you want something so badly you will work towards it and you will get it. Kudos for doing what you can with what you got. Keep it up!
Pretty amazing story, I can relate to in some ways. I also suffered addiction and depression and I can say that Jesus Christ led me through those things in my life. I love astrophotography and seeing how everything is gloriously and wonderfully made. This is all to point us to something greater, which is God. “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him-though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone. “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.”
Acts of the Apostles 17:27-31 NLT
"You may be a genius, but you've got no common sense." My mother told me that over and over i the 1950s and 1960s! I wonder if they were related? 😎
FWIW, I started in physics too. Discovered I was no good at it, and switched to computers in 1970... just as the microprocessors were first being invented. I absolutely LOVED my software development job (independent for 26 years, until the Dot Bomb in 2000 killed Hi Tech). By my 60's though, it became repetitive and I got bored, so I retired at 62. My wife gave me a Canon 5DM3 and said "you need a hobby" and created a monster! I now love photography and am learning astrophotography -- from people like you. Fortunately, my "job" was good enough that I can now travel 3-4 months per year internationally, and never have to worry about pay any more.
I love this story. You always seem like a happy person. A lot of work and learning reflects in your vids. I love the Antarctica vid.- It's a stream that makes a river-, just the kind of thing that is so helpful and it just rolls. Maybe something you heard from your granddad.
Alyn, Just came across you as a photographer and your story here on YTube. I was introduced to you by Nigel Danson in one of his latest posts…. I have really enjoyed getting to know your work and in particular, hearing your story (Journey) to where you are today. Thanks for sharing it! Looking forward to more of your work. I have always been interested in Astrophotography and have some “moon shots”, but never made the leap to all that is out there. You have inspired me to start looking up at night in a whole new way. Many thanks and keep snapping!
Such an inspiration Alyn. Thank you very much for this video. Will get your book when it’s there. regards, Koen
Dear alyn! From the moment i watched ur very first video, i thought this guy is/was into the drugs. I am sorry. But we all dont care about your past anymore! We love your work and its so grateful to listen your story as a successful astrophotographer. I wish you all the best! And the video was not boring at all😃😃Stay healthy and stay safe! Clear skies😀
I was literally writing to Alyn to see if i could contact a fellow welsh Astro Photographer living now in Oz for some information and as im typing read he has sadly passed! Im so shocked! RIP Alyn Dear Lord you were so talented in you craft! An amazing Photographer and Narrator! x
Well done Alyn that was a great video from the heart and proof that dreams can come true. Keep up the good work
Hey Alyn,
I got the same story as yours, excluding the drugs and that I still do the job of Mechanical Design Engineer. 😆
Excellent honest and interesting video.. thank you for sharing I have taken a rest from RUclips as you say it takes a lot to keep going with a youtube channel and you are doing great ..stay safe and well Alyn, looking forward to the next video.
Alyn, I'm sure you have a really deep opinion of the Starlink and other low earth orbit broadband satellite based internet initiatives. They will definitely have an impact on all ground based astronomy, professional and amateur alike. I live in the western arctic in Canada 68.3N and our long cold winters are a challenge for camera gear and telescope mounts, but we do have some bortel class 1-2 sites within an hours drive from where I live. Would you ever be interested in visiting the western arctic for astrophotography / northern lights photography? I find it hard to try and think about deep sky astrophotography when the northern lights are so bright so often.
Such a moving story! Very motivational. Thank you for sharing and being so open valuable.
Hi Allyn that's great you found what you love. Have you been to New Zealand that's where I live we have great dark sky reserves. You will love some spots here. When we had the lunar eclipse I wondered if you had come here. We had the best views. It was above my house I was out all night. I always are outside on a clear night. Thank you for your awesome pics. Simmone.
Alyn, I absolutely love your channel pal, your work is second to none. Would be great to catch up in Mid Wales one day.
Thankyou so much for sharing your story. Mine is similar and I think those of us who have lived through it and thrived have a responsibility to speak openly about it so that those who are struggling in silence know that there is a way out. I love your grandads advice too btw. 10 years sober :) Keep up the good work bro
I really like this video. Love your your presentation and your sharing about your journey. Congratulations, it is something that inspire others. Thanks my friend, may God bless you!
Thank you. Somehow, this is one of your best videos :) Not to bash everything else you've done, but I just enjoyed the story and the presentation. Kind of "got to know you better".
I wasn’t bored for a single second of that Alyn, thanks for sharing your story. Absolute pleasure to support you on Patreon as well. Brilliant content on there and would highly recommend to anyone. Thanks for doing what you do and inspiring us!
Don’t sweat the book, it’ll be ready when it’s ready and all the better for it.
I own a transmission repair shop with my dad, I'm 30 yrs old and I can't wait for the day when I can retire so I can follow my passion. it's hard. :/ working 15 hours a day, seven days a week for the past 6 years. Sometimes I don't have the stamina or time to do anything.
Really an inspirational video ... going through such a situation on my mind, really love to follow my mind to landscape and Astro photography.
wow, I didn't know that was your first vlog, looks like I've unknowingly been there since the beginning hahaha. I don't know how many times I've watched this vlog, it's actually one of the best ones you've made in my opinion :)
I like this vid very much. The funny thing is, everyone of us who is following you since a long period, things he/she knows you :D Me also, but i think between watching vlogs and going outside with you is a big difference.
Interesting and inspiring. Congratulations, happy you made it. Praying you will seriously seek Christ in your heart and experience the ultimate purpose in life.
Trial and error, live and learn huh. Well Done on dusting yourself off and getting on with life ! Enjoy these adventures and information you share. Look forward to the next adventure, steve from Sydney ✌
I'm one of those who found you during the pandemic. I work way too much to enjoy night skies as much as I want unfortunately so I live vicariously through your videos and AstroBackyard and Peter Zelinka.. I am going to try my first ever star trails shot this weekend and I wrote down so many tips from your videos. I forgot to get a lens warmer though so we'll see how it goes.
Hey pal, really humble video, I loved it and so you. I remember us standing on Nash point at 1 in the morning and me asking you if you’ll edit the images you’ve just taken on your new Sony camera you bought that week in the morning, then you replying Nah man I’m working in the morning, I’ve got to give that shit up lol
Support is always here when you need it
It's amazing how life unfolds itself !! I really needed to hear this right now. I'm not quitting my job but needed to hear this to help get my head right !!!
hey mate quick question, if you're using a star tracker wouldn't the foreground be blurry? Do you need to composite two seperate exposures to get the sharpness back? thank you
Wallace, if sufficiently trained by yourself, and with the correct resource to hand, could a bottle nose dolphin excel at astro photography? I look forward to your timely response.
What a wonderful and honest recap of your journey to where you are today. And who knows what the future will bring? I honestly create very little astrophotography photos only occasionally venturing out at the night. The night sky is magical! I love to hear and learn about the night sky and creating beautiful images and constantly look forward to your content. It seems like the most gifted artist and creators are the ones that take a while to use that potential ... and struggle to "fit" into the traditional expectations/routine of jobs that do not use their gifts effectively. I will continue to support your content and look forward to your upcoming book!
A little golden mushroom, love it!
So you actually never see daytime anymore? 😅 And how about seasons with very short night time? Is it possible to do astrophotography 8 hours every day in the week? 🤔
Such an inspiration. Thank you for being so raw. I feel you. I've been on that journey. And I'm feeling my way through it now. Awesome, man.
Great hearing your story, Alyn. Your authenticity shines through in these videos. They’ve been an inspiration for me during the pandemic, starting my own astrophotography journey. You’re doing meaningful work and we appreciate it.
Im your Fam since very long time Alyn.... and will keep support You.
I glad you got off drugs and now you can enjoy life because the drugs are going to kill you...God bless 🙏🙏🙏🙏💫
