@@Spinosaurus4ever it makes sense. The counting involved is ridiculous. Playing against polyrhythms and syncopation isn’t the easiest of tasks. Adam plays to create the mood and ambiance more than he does to show off unnecessary speed and solos. It’s his amazing ability to know what notes to play and why they need to be played.

As a tool fan for 30 years, I will never forget hearing Pneuma for the first time. I was lying in bed with my headphones on about half way through I just started crying cause it was so beautiful. Then I got to see the debut of Pneuma live at Aftershock in 2019. That day was also the last day I ever had a sip of alcohol. Their music is powerful.

When this came out, I watched it in my car (giant headphone set). I played it for a guy I work with on a lunch break who was a tool fan in his 50’s. He said after: “Now what do we do? I need a cigarette…”.
“It’s the most structured chaos I’ve ever seen!” That is absolutely the best way to describe it. His drumming is otherworldly.

Just observing this from the physical athletic sense, his core has to be engaged the whole time to hold his torso in the exact place to allow his legs to reach the pedals precisely while at the same time his arms are reaching more than 180degrees around the front of him. Every appendage is moving in an independent rhythm and if you watch the repeat movements say with his left arm his shoulder, elbow, and wrist hits the same exact place in the screen you can mark the screen with an erasable marker and predict with certainty where the wrist will be as soon as that rhythmic piece comes back around, even though he had to move it from the shoulder to a completely different, yet precise place to access a different set of kit for the place in the rhythm between the two compared wrist placements...now do this for every song in a 2hr concert...with very little time between songs...because often the drummer also is engaged between songs with boom shots or other antics while the lead singer speaks to the croud...then look at all the flashing/strobing lights, lasers, etc and the fact that his kit has so many pieces that have to be within arms reach and how easy it would be to strike the wrong piece of kit due to how densly everything has to be placed...then think about the high school kid in drum line aspiring to become the next drummer at this level...
As a person who knows little to nothing about playing instruments I'm sitting on the edge of a mechanics stool trying to move my feet like he does while also swinging my arms about and keeping balance on my seat and can only do so for maybe 30 seconds before losing balance and it takes even less time for one of my appendages to say nope I'm out and just stop...then I become conscience of that arm or leg and while fixing that lose track of one of the other 3...on a side note I'm on my lunch break and my other mechanic coworkers have caught me in this act and are now going through the stages of wth is he doing, laughing as they realize it, then laughing at my completely uncoordinated attempt at air drums...lol...if you made it this far I apologize for the mini-novella but hope it at least gave you a laugh at the end...

You are one of very few reactors I’ve seen do both the studio and live version of this track. You can’t fully appreciate what Danny does without seeing it, imo, and this drum cam perspective gives a unique look into Danny’s world. Great video. I think the entire Tool army would like a glimpse into the creation of many of Tools tracks. They’re just different.

Danny is easily the greatest drummer alive... to be simultaneously playing up to 4 time signatures and to do it so FLAWLESSLY... LIVE!!! he may just be the greatest to ever live... I am so excited... I have been a fan of TooL for almost 30 years... and I finally get to see them live in October... I just wish I could have seen them on the Lateralus tour... I PRAY they play my favorite song Parabol/Parabola
HE is playing complicated Jazz heavy and in unity with the other 3 people on the stage. It is fascinating and elite.

Danny went to school on a music scholarship. The man is actually a percussionist.
My interpretation of “one foot nailed down” is that we are born with natural curiosity and wonder and a desire to soar to new heights and experiences; but we are bound by the limitations of our flesh and fears.
Bound by the responsibilities, real and perceived, that we take in and internalize. Most of these "responsibilities" are delusions and self-inflicted prisons of our ego that bind our potential. Fear of failing those responsibilities is part of the binding mechanism.

Adam Jones told a story how they brought in drummers from other bands like SOAD AND Rage against the machine and they asked Adam if the drums were multiple tracks mixedand he said "nope that's just Danny playing." And they were like WTF, he's a f'n Alien. You can see the 4 different patterns and time signatures at the same time.
In the drum cam, he was playing with his feet, had one rhythm in his left hand and another one in the right! MIND BLOWN!!!
I remember that article. When other great drummers are scratching their heads not quite believing what they're hearing, then you know you're on a different level.

I am belated that another member has joined our ever growing army. Welcome to Tool! Yes, it is an experience worth every dime and moment spent. I'm am curious if, after hearing and viewing them, did you happen to listen to more? Also, if I may, I would like to also point out that most of there stuff drives from a simple formula. Not only their lyrics, but their instrumentals have a fibonacchi sequence perfection towards life and all things spiritual and fundamental. This band has made me a better human and way more intelligent than I might have been without them. I can say that some music has left me dumber for listening, however, Tool has always left me feeling intelligent after listening. I hope that you continue to enjoy their music and delve further into their magic. Thank you for listening

2:41 - Danny Carey's drumkit includes Synesthesia Mandala Drum pads, and because a Mandala surface is divided into 128 position rings and can detect 127 strike velocities (greater than 0) it can produce up to 16,256 (128 x 127) individual triggers. For this song he's using a lot of tabla sounds in the section that sounded like water droplets and the feeling of rain.

Someone probably already wrote this, but the 3 guys that compose the music spent a minimum of 5+ years composing and creating these masterpieces in the studio like a regular job. Danny recounts this in an interview from a few years back.
So, how they came up with it? LOTS of long, hard work that pays off when you are so musically talented and creative. I am just so thankful these guys got together and have stuck it out. The WORLD is thankful for their compositions. As an atheist I never pray, but if you told me to do that to get another album from them, I would in a heartbeat!!
Its worth noting that Maynar wasn't present during most of the writing of the music. He said he just added the vocals later. He was working on other projects while the band was making the music. A vocalist isn't really much help during the writing process of music like this. Its not like he could just tell the instrumentalists how to jam together, and he wouldn't know what to sing until the instrumentation is mostly ready.
His name is Danny Carey and he's a master of polyrythms. Part of why he's known as "the octopus" is for using all limbs to create beautiful percusions, the other reason is he can keep at least 4 patterns going at one time, 5 if he drops his shorts :)
Danny Carey is a top 5 drummer off all time in my opinion.
Danny from another dimension.....it's not just his pllaying that's so incredible, but the fact he actually writes these patterns. He's def one of the goat drummers all time. The Octopus perfectly describes hiim. If you haven't react to Crawl Away....top 5 fave TOOL songs and still hits me to this day like it did back in 93'. And if you wanna see Maynard in savage mode, watch the vid when he's onstage singing and some fan jumps up and goes towards Maynard, and being a BJJ practicioner, Maynard grabs the guy and tosses him over his shoulder, then puts him in a chokehold and finishes singing the song before he allowed security to get him. Legendary
"I forgot there was singing.."One of the best things about Tool is when you have those long breakdowns, you don't miss the singing.

For me Tool is like candy for the brain, the songs stimulate all the neurons
This song touches the soul, I kind of feel like they tapped into the vibration of the universe on this one. Glad you did both, and in that order.
Lateralus has that same feel. Something mystical about them and their ability to establish a connection while giving you an out of body experience. If you know, you know it's hard to explain.
After the little intro and he pulls his legs over like watch this. That and near the end when he backhands the symbol. He's just showing off. He knows he's the best living drummer.

If you want to check out something on the opposite end of the spectrum from Tool, check out some of the earlier, angrier work. "Jerk Off" or "Bottom" would be my suggestions.
Tool is the only band that Im aware of that records all of the music and then they send it to Maynard to write the lyrics and record the vocals.
I haven't watched yet but already liked. 50 minutes is about average for Tool. 😂😂 Pneuma is from their most recent album and their sound has evolved so much. Someone else mentioned to go back to their earliest work, the raw and angry stuff is amazing as well.

Pneuma taps into the primal dna of our past. Especially that middle section. It brings you back tens of thousands of years and speaks directly to you and the ancestors. Given your ear and appreciation of their music, I'd say you're more than ready to listen to Disposition-Reflection-Triad off of Lateralus. They should be listened to together since they are really one continuous song broken into three parts.

What a genuine reaction. So many seem "fake" but yours is gold. Your discovery was a gift to watch. Doing the audio then live reaction is new to me and a great idea.

Almost an hour long review?! Are you kidding me?! Worth every second to watch it. I love your insights - you pick up on so many of the details that often take multiple listens to pick up. TOOL takes you on a journey. They don't write music, they write compositions and emotional experiences. No better band, no better drummer.
And don’t forget that Danny, aka The Octopus, is almost 60lbs old when this was recorded. He’s my favorite drummer. Tool Army!!!

34:24 or so you ask how they do it. The drummer writes amazing pieces with the bassist. They then workshop it with the guitarist. When it's almost totally done, Maynard writes the words and adds the haunting vocals. Sometimes there's more back-and-forth but almost all of the hits have been done this way AFAIK.
As much as Danny's playing seems to be amazing and complex (and it really is) to a regular ear, someone who might not be the expert in drumming or music notation, without the deep understanding of odd meters, polyrhythms and polymeters one doesn't even start to grasp the genial complexity of his drumming...and then ... how the complete band fits into this composition... true genius...
I could watch it again and again. It never hets ild watching someones brain explode discovering tool. Danny Carey is unmatched. The whole band is from another planet.
Much respect for doing both back to back. The TOOL army is here for all 50 minutes.

They played 7empest for other musicians, and they asked how many over dubs Danny used. HE didn't use any, it was all him.
They plan out every single note, key change, everything.
Saw them first time in 94 at a bar i wasnt old enough to drive at the time but things were different then and u could usually get in for shows and not get served. In sure someone covered this but Danny sets up his kit different than anyone else i know of and according to sacred geometry. For those interested. Man invented his own drum and plays over 30 piece kit sometimes. Hes just as good with 8 or 10 but when he incorporates the synthesizer with his drumming live, you dont need to do drigs to have a psychedlic experience. Sober is the best show youll ever see, and thats why the trademark them. Its like that😊

The more you listen to them, the more you realize just how masterful they are. It's been a 35 year journey for me... and counting. BTW - That feeling you got in the middle of the song? That's called a Toolgasm.. :) It's like they gently lift you up on a cloud, way up in the air, then they shake you like a ragdoll until your insides are liquified, hit you in the face with a brick, then they gently and delicately set you back down on a feather pillow.

The way the drums are panned to specific areas do that they sound like they're either right in front of you or you are sitting a behind the kit, is common for Rock and Metal. As a drummer, it's one of my favorite things to listen for in my music. 🔥🤘🏽🌀

I never realized how talented and amazing Danny is. I've always been a true Neil Peart fan and still am. Danny is of that caliber. In my heart no one is better than Neil.

I remember reading once that when you discover Tool, it makes you fall in love with music all over again. This is exactly what happened to me about 10 years ago, and I have been obsessed ever since. Hey man, i think it's totally normal to be overwhelmed by TOOL's music. You are a genuine and honest person for showing yourself experience it in real time. You said in the first reaction that producing music is like magic - but figuratively, not literally. I kinda call bullshit on that. These guys - and their mixing engineers - created and packaged a piece of art onto a digital file that can evoke emotion, change your mood, uplift the feelings, and cause one to conquer doubt and fear. The bass player goes for hikes in the mountains and uses his natural foot steps as inspiration for a rhythmic guideline then brings it to Danny and then they start adding the layers.
Let's watch some itw of Danny Carey, the drummer, he says something ESSENTIAL (it's not precisely their own words, but...) : "A good drummer doesn't just play patterns, he plays MUSIC."
So, the entire approach of the way he plays drums, the way he arranges his drums parts is defined by this.
