LaBrie is lacking nowadays. In studio he’s still got it. Live is another story. Love the band, but LaBrie’s been a pretty weak part of the band for years now.
I think he gets hit too hard… considering he fought through fucking up his vocal chords for the good of the band … I think time just passed his vocal style overall.. he sounds like a singer from the 80s or 90s …. Which he was… it’s just 30 years later and it hard to do it night in and night out on tour at his age
this is educational, esp for a drummer. To watch a professional work through is a masterclass. Mike is a true pro and highly trained. Danny and Mike are masters of their craft. So fun to watch!
Watch Portnoy learn Nickelback’s “Burn it to the Ground” in like 1/10th this amount of time WITHOUT hearing or seeing the drum part, arguably better than the original version. It’s on Drumeo channel too.
he listening while keep talking and still killin it.. thats a fvkin Dream Theater members ability.. while they keep praising them, what an atiitude .. thats why he is a Legend and of course all Dream Theater member is a Legend. no one can beat em down 😎 and yes all Dream Theater member is a Professor :)
M, I'm with you, I really dug it myself, he nailed it with what he had set up in his own drum set, no electronics or anything ,i think he did an " Amazing " job..
Great video dude, you gotta react to some of Mike Portnoy's playthroughs Honor thy father, The dance of eternity, As I am, and you'll understand what kind of entirely different beast Portnoy is. I have seen both DT and Tool live and they truly embody the saying a band is only as good as its drummer, both have fantastic drummers at the top of the game but entirely different approach to the instrument. Also performing what he did in only 5h is mindblowing like a lot of people dont realize just how impressive a feat that is.
Well, after this, it's gotta be a Dream Theater track.. haha Dance of eternity is crazy, Either the breakdown from drumeo, or the video from his drumming dvd from the mid 2000's (which is also on youtube here). Dream Theater has been my favorite band since the mid 90's.
Lol… I love both Tool and Dream Theater… but don’t think for a second Danny would just sit down and pick up a DT song without some time and a learning curve
This is my first time dropping by your channel, but I really appreciated the joy in your reaction. One note: Danny has some special Mandala Pads as part of his kit in the original, so Mike had to approximate/improvise those sounds with the toms.
Awesome job by Mike Portnoy ✌️🎤🔥🥁 thanks for sharing this video reaction….i thought it was great to see how hard it was to be dissecting an odd time signature masterpiece like this song…
Watched Tool last night in Birmingham England. Absolutely smashed it. Unbelievable and without a doubt Danny Carey is the best drummer I have ever seen. 🤘🤘🤘
There’s a RUclips video showing Mike Portnoy playing to the Dream Theater song, The Great Debate, which is a long song but it shows just how complicated Mike’s drum charts can be…. His double bass drum pedal footwork is lightning fast!
Mike is one of the best drummers on the planet his bands are dream theater, sons of Apollo ,the winery dogs, the Neil Morse band , and probably many more I can’t think of right now outstanding player, and he’s right it’s an equation I think it’s called the Fibonacci sequence or something like that
Mike is a feel drummer that’s also very technical. That’s what makes him great. Was it perfect, no,but it was phenomenal considering what they gave him. You got a MP version of Tool with correct basics, but DT fills. I wouldn’t expect anything less. More importantly Mike was vulnerable with no ego, giving respect to a difficult song. Something not very many people can do.
Like Portnoy mentioned in the video; ...the Black Page by Frank Zappa. Is the equivalent to Pneuma. I'm a total TOOL fan and not into Zappa at all but... I am a drummer, and it is what it is.
Treating time like math - it's honestly a fun thing just being able to do that, kinda feels like having a miniature superpower knowing music theory the pauses are killin me lmaoooo The other channel they run is Pianote - great channel for keys Faaar easier to write a song in any form at all than it is to learn someone else's
I was working on learning this song in bare bones on cajon (a box drum), and I have infinite respect for Mike getting it as good as he did in a couple hours. You can see how much he's hesitating in the verses, cos that's the part with the killer time signatures, but he's a lot more in his element with the chorus and breakdown where it's more intuitive.
Imagine being called on the phone as a drummer and being asked to replace Danny Carey for a few concert shows?? Would never want that kind of pressure for any drummer incapable of such amazing talent.
Hey mugs you know I’ve been pushing dream theater here for a while lol…. The whole band is master musicians, bass, keyboards, guitar…. All of it
your right Jason time for Mugs to deep dive into Dream Theater!
Pull him under!!!

Dream Theater full album review of Train of Thought? Vote this up people lol
As I am is the best
Best Dream theater album
I upvoted...love that album...but better than Scenes? or Six Degrees? Its heavier for sure

You should really react to the drumeo vid of Mike doing the dance of eternity, it will give you a really good look of how great drummer he actually is
M, I'm with you, I really dug it myself, he nailed it with what he had set up in his own drum set, no electronics or anything ,i think he did an " Amazing " job..
Its like Portnoy gaslights us with uncertainty and then just knocks it out of the park in the end.
This makes Dream Theater sound like Wheezer's had me laughing since this dropped.💀
This Episode was so good I watched you react to it. Mike made it with his personality. He also did a great job drumming.
Time to check out Dream Theater Dance of Eternity....MP on Drums
Epic! The convergence of two Drum Gods
Great video dude, you gotta react to some of Mike Portnoy's playthroughs Honor thy father, The dance of eternity, As I am, and you'll understand what kind of entirely different beast Portnoy is.

This is such a great video, I too watched it as soon as it was suggested to me! So ready to watch it again with ya!
You’ll find yourself down a musical 🎶 rabbit hole when you dive deep into Dream Theater music.
Portnoy is one of the all time greats. Truly shows how damn amazing Danny Carey 🐙 is 🔥
Lol… I love both Tool and Dream Theater… but don’t think for a second Danny would just sit down and pick up a DT song without some time and a learning curve
Great video! 2 of my favorite bands. Great choice! Enjoyed watching it unfold
His son Max is also an absolute monster on the drums. Tallah is wild.
Props to this guy for doing a Tool song. Polyrhythms are a challenge and he did great. I saw Tool live in 2007 and they were epic!!
This guy is a master too…. The song they talk about …Dance of Eternity has over 100 time signature changes
@@JasonTurner-uk9rk
LOL 😂
It’s been such a fun transition to seeing you join the Tool army to now watching this, knowing who could possibly match Danny. 😂
This is my first time dropping by your channel, but I really appreciated the joy in your reaction.
One note: Danny has some special Mandala Pads as part of his kit in the original, so Mike had to approximate/improvise those sounds with the toms.
Can't wait for your dream theater reaction!
You had me at “DC is the MJ”!!!!🤘
Dude he is the Man the one and only Mike Portnoy
Awesome job by Mike Portnoy ✌️🎤🔥🥁 thanks for sharing this video reaction….i thought it was great to see how hard it was to be dissecting an odd time signature masterpiece like this song…
Killed it! Dudes a beast!
What I enjoyed most about this epic piece was watching a real drummer react to it. Best to you, my friend!
Thanks for this video !!
Watched Tool last night in Birmingham England. Absolutely smashed it. Unbelievable and without a doubt Danny Carey is the best drummer I have ever seen. 🤘🤘🤘
This is fkn awesome, love the knowledge, I used to know how to read music and what not, but forgot it all, really brings me back
That's why Portnoy is God level.
Mike Portnoy is a beast... He was also in A7X for a while...
Mike is on Danny's level but it's cool to see him struggle then figure it out.
There’s a RUclips video showing Mike Portnoy playing to the Dream Theater song, The Great Debate, which is a long song but it shows just how complicated Mike’s drum charts can be…. His double bass drum pedal footwork is lightning fast!
Danny’s Vic Firth drum cam of this song is ONE OF MY FAVORITE VIDEOS OF ALL TIME!!!
check the dance of eternity too
This also isn't some random drummer this is definitely one of Danny's peers
Thank you for that. I'm a fan . Would love to see Danny

Liquid Tension Experiment
Transatlantic, Flying Colors, Avenged Sevenfold, Adrenaline Mob, Metal Allegiance, OSI, BigElf, etc.
@@mikenastasi8927 oh and liquid tension experiment lol I forgot that one and I own it
@@dalejohnson2047
Yeah, the guy above me mentioned them.
Office of Strategic Influence
Great video. Thanks you
Is it finally time for some dream theater? Pull me under to start perhaps?
Hey man now you gotta get into some Dream Theater! I'd start with Octavarium live (Score)
Not just drumming but music is a math equation. That’s something that took me a while to learn as a kid starting to drum and play instruments.
They say Danny made a deal with the devil… nobody knows what Danny got, but the devil got some wild ass drum lessons
we all love The Octopus
They should have given him eletric drums, so he could replicate some of the sounds more closely.
Check out Drumeo- Mike Portnoy tries to play Nickleback Burn it to The Ground, Mike is a very talented drummer, a personal favorite of mine
Mike is a feel drummer that’s also very technical. That’s what makes him great. Was it perfect, no,but it was phenomenal considering what they gave him. Dream Theater are a great band. I would suggest albums over songs. Everyone should know their work if you enjoy progressive metal at all.
for the drum part pneuma is the hardest drum of any song
Like Portnoy mentioned in the video;
...the Black Page by Frank Zappa. Is the equivalent to Pneuma.
I'm a total TOOL fan and not into Zappa at all but... I am a drummer, and it is what it is.
Wait for Dany to learn dance of eternity 😂
You might as well react to mike portnoy's dance of eternity in drumeo to see what he is capable of.. You'll be in for a surprise
Dance of Eternity- Dream Theatre. Just to see what this guy is capable of
when one master is handed an other masters work.
No Danny didn’t take 11 years to write this song. What he meant was that the 2019 FI album that was dropped was 13 years after the previous album.
To learn this song as a drummer in one day? Fuck me sideways.
Nice
Treating time like math - it's honestly a fun thing just being able to do that, kinda feels like having a miniature superpower knowing music theory
the pauses are killin me lmaoooo
The other channel they run is Pianote - great channel for keys
Faaar easier to write a song in any form at all than it is to learn someone else's
He's such a pro on the kit - but a delightful bastard everywhere else
I'm a drummer and yeah this a challenge and a half😅
Mike Portnoy is by far my favorite other than Neal Peart
If Portnoy has issues you know who is the 🐐 🐙 Danny is the greatest of all time.
Jordan? Meet Bird then I guess.
🤘😎🤘
And he a wrote that. Danny is god.
I was working on learning this song in bare bones on cajon (a box drum), and I have infinite respect for Mike getting it as good as he did in a couple hours.

Portnoy's a bad dude :P

The sequence.
Can i make a video of me reacting to you reacting to mike portnoy reacting to him having to learn pnuema
Only if I can make a video of that
Imagine being called on the phone as a drummer and being asked to replace Danny Carey for a few concert shows?? Would never want that kind of pressure for any drummer incapable of such amazing talent.
