  • This video was originally made for robot enthusiasts who might be interested in using parts from the Hasbro toy for other purposes. Please note that the electronics inside the droid, the printed circuit boards more specifically, are not user serviceable. The control electronics are potted in epoxy and so cannot be repaired. I have had many requests for advice on how to repair an inoperative droid. I do know the electronics can fail for unknown reasons, and I have not been able to find a way to repair them, nor do I have the parts to do so. This video is for informational purposes only.
    This video describes how to disassemble and remove the electronics from the Hasbro Interactive Voice Controlled R2-D2. It is intended for the private use of robot hobbyists/hackers and specifically for members of the R2-D2 builder's club in converting their full-size droid replicas to voice control.

    Thanks for your interest Marco. Yes, I have the details of the dome quadrature encoder. I will email you with the details. Perhaps I will make a video explaining the details so that others may have the information. These little toys give us so many opportunities for modding and hacking; I hope to provide as much information about them as I can.- Rob

      Hey man, I’m having a bit of trouble with my interactive r2d2 toy and I was hoping you could help me. See the head is getting stuck and won’t spin. I took it apart and found out that it was the white wheels inside the dome that are the problem. They are getting stuck on the black poles they are on and wont spin that easily. I have no idea why that might be and I was hoping you would now how I could loosen them up so it would work. Keep in mind, I don’t want to get rid of the wheels altogether to solve the problem because I feel like they are there for a reason. Also, there are two pillars in particular that are a bit bigger than the others. I know that because when I try to put the wheels on, it’s more of a tight fit. Also, I’ve tried removing half of wheels and tried different combinations of what wheels to take off and which ones to leave there, but It doesn’t work that well. Besides, like i said before, I’d prefer it if all the wheels are on. Anyways, do you have an idea on how I can fix the wheels to make them turn more easily so the head can spin right?

    Mine looks just like this and it used to work. I think I took it apart one time cuz the head's supposed to turn back and forth and I thought something was broke inside. I took it apart and of course some wires came loose - they're gray, red and blue and I think they go to this light sensor piece in the front but I really don't know without a schematic. I soldered them back to where I thought they went and it doesn't do anything. Like I said mine looks just like this, how do I know where the wires go without a schematic?

    Even thought it has been five years since you release your video on dismantling Hasbro 2007 R2 D2 Voice Recognition , I have a wire/ connector question. When I pulled the SonTX connector from the socket on the circuit board, the white wire came out, but the pin connector remained in the plug. I was able to remove the pin(s), now I am trying to find replacement pin(s). It appears that the Radio Shack stores in my area are closing. So I have to purchase this from their website. There are spec to each pin connector, and I just want to order the right one. Can you help? Jonathan

      Check the wheel lock button above his third leg. If it is lit up red, he is in a special mode that prevents him from driving off of tables and whatnot. If you press it, the red light will turn off, and he will be free to move. When turned on, it will always start in wheel lock mode.

    Does anyone know the pinouts of the Main CPU in this thing? I know it has the sounds on it, etc... Motor drivers etc... Light Detection... Was wondering if anyone knew what the Chip is and or had a copy of the firmware on it? Thanks! (If we knew what the chip was we could get the firmware from it possibly)

    • @robmeyerproductions
      @robmeyerproductions  6 месяцев назад

      Hi William. The chip is potted in epoxy and to my knowledge no one has ever been ever to retrieve the firmware. That is why I eventually decided to just build and program a copy of the whole system when I kept coming across the main boards on these Hasbro droids just "dying" for no apparent reason with no way to really diagnose or repair.
      I also posted a video covering how to convert them to radio control, which isn't as cool as voice control, but it is one other way to salvage a dead Hasbro droid. Check my channel for that video.

    At timestamp 14:35 it shows the inside of the Dome - see the wires that connect to the sensor on the front? Mine tore loose now I'm trying to figure out where they go I think they're gray brown red and blue - if I could see an enlarged version of where the wires come into the head that might do it. I've seen some other videos but they're just not clear enough.

    • @robmeyerproductions
      @robmeyerproductions  6 месяцев назад

      Basically they play a whole series of interactive games, many with sounds, lights and even motion of the droid. You can search online for a complete menu of commands to test. Also be aware the little LED light in the center of the droid, near the base, is actually a button. It is a sort of safety feature that disables/enables the drive motors. So you might try pushing that button once, then see if you can get the drive motors going.
      Good luck!
