This is some test video of my new Life Form Scanner I built for my full-size replica R2-D2. It extends/retracts by an automotive power antenna and the rotation comes from a gear drive connected to a radio control servo. The functions are all automated through a Picaxe 14M microcontroller. The next step will be to install it into the dome.- Rob

      Thanks for watching my video! Yes- I pinned this comment because I should have noted in the video that my explanation does not really explain how the RTK receiver deals with the error component of each individual satellite. I was hoping to offer a more condensed "end result" sort of geometric illustration without getting too far into the weeds on the rest. I would encourage anyone who is really more interested in the details to seek out more information from the manufacturers and other online sources.

    I'd like to know why you didn't consider the u-blox ZED F9P rather than the u-blox C94-M8P. This seems to be the way agopengps is headed and they are claiming much higher precision in routing. I'm in Canada where RTK correction services are limited and expensive and I'm thinking about a lora base station, setting up auto mowing and field lining for 3 full size soccer fields, fields across the main fields, parking lot lining etc. The possibility of 1 cm accuracy is exciting. I’ve looked at commercial solutions like turf tank, traqnology and some open source auto mower solutions as well as agopengps and perhaps using dual gps on the rover rather than compass. I'm not sold on mission planner or the agopen software if I can just write some route software and control paint sprayer on off cycles.

    • @robmeyerproductions
      @robmeyerproductions 24 дня назад

      Thanks for watching my video- Sounds like an interesting project! Honestly I just used the same setup I saw another RUclipsr using because he had posted some incredibly in-depth tutorials on the setup. I am not sure if the ZED F9P was available back when I first purchased my M8P RTK evaluation kit, but I have read up on it a bit since then. I am sure that if and when I ever build an entirely new RTK system, I will try to source a more recent hardware iteration.

    • @robmeyerproductions
      @robmeyerproductions 14 дней назад

      To be more specific, I used the M8P evaluation kit because I wanted to avoid relying an an outside correction service- particularly one which would require a subscription and/or continuous Internet connection. With the M8P evaluation kit I am able to set up my own base station and do RTK (perhaps with slightly less accuracy) more or less autonomously, using only the signals from the GNSS constellation itself. I suppose I could set up a similar system based upon the F9P, but I chose the M8P specifically because it included the radios on each unit allowing me to pass corrections from my own base station. From what I could find, the F9P evaluation module has no radios and relies on an Internet connection and a subscription service in order to function. I am really not very savvy on setting up data radios, so I chose the M8P kit because it was already packaged as such. I suppose if I learn of a F9P evaluation kit with radio links similar to my M8P kit, I might look into that.

    • @robmeyerproductions
      @robmeyerproductions 8 месяцев назад

      Hi William. The chip is potted in epoxy and to my knowledge no one has ever been ever to retrieve the firmware. That is why I eventually decided to just build and program a copy of the whole system when I kept coming across the main boards on these Hasbro droids just "dying" for no apparent reason with no way to really diagnose or repair. I also posted a video covering how to convert them to radio control, which isn't as cool as voice control, but it is one other way to salvage a dead Hasbro droid. Check my channel for that video.

      Basically they play a whole series of interactive games, many with sounds, lights and even motion of the droid. You can search online for a complete menu of commands to test. Also be aware the little LED light in the center of the droid, near the base, is actually a button. It is a sort of safety feature that disables/enables the drive motors. So you might try pushing that button once, then see if you can get the drive motors going. Good luck!

    Fascinating how does the magnetic compass work when there's not supposed to be a magnetic field on Mars? What does the compass align itself to if that is true?

    • @robmeyerproductions
      @robmeyerproductions Год назад

      Good question- never really thought about it, but I would assume the Mars rovers derive their orientation either from signals taken from the satellites which are now in orbit around the planet, or perhaps even from signals taken from their associated lander platform. It might also be possible that even though Mars does not have a magnetic field comparable to that of Earth's, it may have enough of a remnant of one to allow for magnetometers to use it for orientation. I have to say, though, that I have never heard mention of magnetic compasses used any of the Mars rovers I have seen, or at least not for navigation purposes.

  • @nizarbelhiba
    @nizarbelhiba Год назад

    Any chance to see that on close up? Like andrew im more interested in the rotation mechanism. Thank you

    • @robmeyerproductions
      @robmeyerproductions Год назад

      Hi thank you for your interest. I do not have any close up pictures, but the rotation mostly just consists of a mini-gearmotor such as you can find here: www.solarbotics.com/product/gm18/ which is embedded into the scanner head base, which I had cut in half and machined out to be hollow. The rotation and reversing are handled by the motor controller, and there are no limit switches or any sort of feedback (other than the homing system). The back and forth rotation were just roughly programmed into the Pickaxe microcontroller based upon a set of predetermined rotation intervals (i.e. 500ms right, 250 ms left, 250ms right, 500ms left, etc.) In other words, the rotation control program was written based upon the assumption that the scanner head will always start from the same position it was facing when it deployed from the compartment- so it really has no way of sensing at which point it is in the rotation (again, aside from the homing system which only comes into play when the scanner head is lowered into the dome). - Hope this helps.

    • @robmeyerproductions
      @robmeyerproductions 11 дней назад

      Hi again- Just to update on this subject; my goal is to eventually rebuild the rotation system entirely. I think it is just too complex for now, and it has turned out to be not as failsafe as I had hoped it would be. I think whenever I do rebuild it I will try to provide much more comprehensive documentation. Also in case I hadn't mentioned it in the video, you can always search for my threads on the subject at Astromech.net . Not sure if you need to sign up in order to do the search, or you may at least be able to search the builders galleries, which contain folders of the pictures the members have posted. My member i.d. on Astromech is rmeyer.

      I will probably always be doing droid related work- it is just not as frequent as it used to be. My wife and I purchased a farm property where we grow wine grapes among other things. It pretty much takes up all my time during the summer months, so that leaves fall and winter for droid projects. I hope to not only continue to do more work on my droids, but to start bringing everyone more up to date on the progress here on RUclips. Making RUclips videos, however, just adds another layer of time commitment, so I will just have to see how much I can put out. Thanks for checking in!

    How does this affect the motors in the R2 long term? The Interactive R2 has a pretty slow set speed, (which I assume is just by design, given the weight distribution on the unit) but how much faster could it really go without putting stress on the motors? The other thing I was curious about, is how the batteries should be wired. I'd think that there is a voltage limited inbetween the battery leads, and the receiver? I'm looking at modding one of these little guys, but there's not a whole lot of information out there on conversions, and I'd like to toy around with it a little bit. Awesome stuff, I hope you're doing well these days!

      Sensor Array and Telescope? The Interactive R2-D2 only includes a single Periscope. Do you mean the Holoprojector and the Periscope? The holoprojector is the silver knob on the top of his dome, on one of the blue panels, and the Periscope is the two-piece attachment that goes on his left upper dome flap. I believe there are a few listings on ebay for them, but it does cost a little bit. I just recently purchased a replacement door panel, as well as a whole second R2 to possibly do a mod on. I'll take a look at ebay and leave some here. Here's one listing for a REAR holoprojector, but I'm sure you could get it to work in place of the top one. Might take a little gluing, or some fidelling. They appear to be very similar pieces.www.ebay.com/itm/Star-Wars-Hasbro-R2-D2-Interactive-Robot-PART-REAR-ILLUMINATING-LIGHT-HOUSING/382640691688?hash=item59172999e8:g:an8AAOSwanxf~~Fq As for the two Periscope assembly pieces, I'm not sure. Thanks for the great video! I hope you are still able to reply to comments, but my problem that I have with my R2 is the left wheel motor is seized up and he will not move forward. Any tips on how I can go about opening the legs and fixing the motor? Thanks so much, hopefully you can help.

    Do you still make those kits? I'm trying to add sound to my life size R2 and I had that idea of using the Hasbro components.

    Hi how are you, I bought a few days ago, it was good until yesterday that after cleaning the microphone stopped that picks up the voice commands, it seems to be obstructed or something similar, does not respond to sounds, try to blow hard on your mic and there answered with a beep, that he did a couple of times and he does not do it anymore, the batteries are new, you have an idea that can cause this flaw? Can you clean or repair the r2 mic? please wait for your answer to know if I can fix it or I should return it, from a thousand thanks

    Hi Rob, i remember a while ago i used a limit switch/reverse polarity circuit that you had on your website. Yesterday i was looking for it but it seems your website is down. By any chance do you still have those circuits? Would you share them again please? Thanks for your website since it helped me make a few mechanisms for my home 😄 best regards.

      Unfortunately yes- my website was hacked on two occasions. I managed to repair all the pages and restore it back the first time, but then it happened again within short order. I spent some time with my hosting service trying to reach a resolution, but they said they could not help unless I purchased additional services from them. Being that I do not make any income from my website, I had to decline the offer. I would think that a search here on RUclips for "reversing DC motors with relays" or something along those lines might turn up something. Sorry I could not be of any further help at this time.

    I would be interested in seeing more of the rotation, I'm a member of astromech and it's hard to find good explanation of this, I've been working on my LFS and have the antenna motor and so forth but am having difficulty figuring out the side to side rotation because of the antenna motors plastic geared extension is somewhat hard to manipulate. Any help would be appreciated
