- Hi, in this video I attempt to repair a Sphero R2D2 droid which locks up every time it moves.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.
I thought you would enjoy trying to fix my little R2. I do need to also aquire an R2Q5 and a BB9e and have a 'watch with me' session. When I got the R2 unit, the R2Q5 were selling as faulty for £15-£25 but now cant find any except the over-priced fully working ones. If you see 1 then snap them up. The middle leg not working is a common fault. I wont do a spoiler and say how this one ends but I did appreciate the time and effort and money that you put into this to try and get it working.
Cheers Emma. Thanks for sending him over and thanks for the support over the years :-)
Great item for a vince trying to fix video Emma very enjoyable

Never thought I'd hear you talking about R2D2's 3rd Leg, Vince! Awesome job as always 👍
Hahaha :-)

The ingenuity of youtubers and hobbyists never ceases to amaze me. Impressive fault finding.
My dude!!!!!! I got all the way to isolating the one motor before I found your video. I can not thank you enough. My motor had the exact same issue. You are amazing! 🧡👊🏻🇨🇦
Incredible video of a truly collectable fun toy.
And in a Star Wars theme.
Vince, you definitely had the patience of a Jedi with the disassembly/reassembly of this galaxies far away humpty dumpty.
Honestly, you deserve if not literally at least figuratively a million views and likes for the fact that both went back together and both were at least for now working.
I always have a smile on my face when a see a new video from you mate 👍
That was crazy! I had serious doubts in the beginning, you really surprised me in the end.
Man, you are amazing! I’ve been doing stuff like this all my life, but there are some times I look at something like this and say...nah. Seeing you field strip an astrometric droid was truly a pleasure.
Regards the chips driving the motors - it's common for one of the output drivers to fail in the chip, and leave the other one working! ie. those types of chips often don't completely fail - just one of the drivers... If a motor fails to work, it can detect that via lack of pulses from the hall effect sensor, and it will cut out (safety) - same thing will happen if a motor shorts out and pulls too much current. Great job =D It's scarey how many parts go into those! You must have spent hours and hours on these!!! "If someone gave me another one of these now, I wouldn't do it, but..." =D Incredible the detail on these - particularly how well R2 moves around. Amazed at BB8 movement too tbh! We didn't have toys like this when we were kids!!!
Thanks Chris. Many hours went into them!!! R2D2 is so lifelike, the sounds and movements are very good. A lot of research must have gone into developing these, like a modern day Tomy toy from the 1980s.
@My Mate VINCE Great Video, The resistor to ground is for current sensing, The fingers are called brushes and was shorting the motor pulling more current and shutting down the motor drive IC (over current) safety feature of motor driver IC 👍
Yea cause motor driver ics have sometimes protection buul in them
Your videos are just brilliant! I'm not feeling to great at the moment with everything going on and you're videos never fail to relax me and cheer me up, Thanks a lot.
Great video, thanks for showing us. I just got bought a broken one of these. The middle leg doesn't retract and the other two aren't doing quite what they should either. After watching your vid I recon the mechanism is broken in exactly the same place as yours and interestingly mine has the grey chassis too. luckily my motors seem to be working properly so it could become fully functional again. I can't thank you enough for doing this video, I can see what i'm up against now. Wish me luck!
Nice fix ! R2D2 is now back in action.
The metal things (fingers as you call them) which power the rotor windings are called brushes (this type of motor is called a brushed motor). My guess is that they overheated and deformed when the motor was jammed.
Hey Vince, I wanted to share a trick I do sometimes to melt plastic parts, what I do is get bits of component leads from capacitors that are a bit more sturdy, I bend them in a zig-zag way and with my soldering iron I press them into the plastic bridging both parts.
This way it gives more strength to the part and less chance for separation.
This trick I actually learned from plastic welding car parts like broken bumpers, they use spiral like tabs to push in to the plastic.
Great job! I love seeing how your diagnostic skills have improved over the last year or two. Very complex little toy. If the motor fails again, you could maybe try pulling the bass pulley off the motor shaft (tight press fit) which would let you pull the inner armature assembly out of the motor . You could then get at the bent brushes to try a more long term fix. Hold brass pulley in a vice and tap shaft with small hammer to drift it out. Those el-cheapo motors were never designed to last long though.
Which app controls R2-D2 please help I have it 3 months and no app I try doesn’t work
i must admit i am more of a Trekkie than a star wars fan but i really do love r2 and how even though it is just beeps and boops you can still sense the "emotion" it is feeling and they captured that perfectly in these little bots i am so glad to see you fixed it also that issue with the motor is very common for those sizes of motors i had the same issue with my N scale model train locomotives with the little wipers that are supposed to act like the carbon brushes on the bigger motors getting caught not making contact or shorting out against the other side of the motor
Always watch vince’s vids when im bored
I've had the weirdest flashbacks to Robocop 2, especially around 41:50. Remember, when he was sawn into pieces by Cain and the kid, and dropped off in front of the police station still moving, agonizing?
Awesome repair, Vince! I can't count the number of things i've attempted to fix (most successfully), simply because of watching you work, and learning that for most, it's a very simple thing, while others simply can't be fixed, but all give you an opportunity to learn.
Great fix Vince, such an amazing little toy, so complicated and well put together. Keep up the good work. Mick 👍👏🍻
Can We Appreciate The Fact He Helps Us On Things.
love watching your fixes gives me insperation to fix item rather than bin
There was a much easier way of swapping things where you would've have to solder anything. You could've just swapped the connector plugs. It's very easy to repin them. You just pull back the little clips on the plug and slide the wires out. I've swapped many plugs on different revision boards.
@Ellis The DJ it's nowhere near too much hard work. It takes like 2 minutes to swap the plugs and then the legs wouldn't even need to be taken apart to test the motors. And if the entire boards on something needs to be swapped you don't have to cut wires and resolder stuff.
It's weird even though it's a toy, because he's sat there turning his head and beeping it's like it's actually R2D2 sat there and there is something wrong with him. He's a very charismatic little droid.
I now have 2 R2 units and my fella has a BB8. a few nights ago, 1 of my R2 droids suddenly powered itself up and also the BB8 and they had a little chat to each other. The R2 was set to human interaction and the BB8 was set to droid interaction. The droids had been off for 23-24 hours. Unsure why it powered up, maybe a signal from the TV but I love the little quirks.
@@DEmma1972 they're like a cooler version of those horrid furby things haha.
@@DEmma1972 Funny, mine have done that sometimes too. Although, it could be a malfunction in my case. A few weeks ago, I was woken up by my R2, who decided to start lighting up at 2 in the morning! Those lights are pretty bright when it's dark, the whole room was glowing red and blue. It didn't beep or move, but it flashed the light for 5 minutes or so, then turned back off on its own. It was the same thing that happens when R2 is in deep sleep mode, and you plug him in, where the light flashes for a long period of time, before shutting off on his own. He wasn't plugged in or connected to an app, (the third leg didn't roll out, if he is connected to an app, it automatically comes out no matter what.) so I have no clue what woke him up.
@@Axl_Pose The modern Furbies are quite charming, but unfortunately they have no on or off switch. They sit in a bin without the batteries now, but they are pretty fun to mess with every so often. I'd enjoy seeing Hasbro redesign that R2-D2 from 2002 to work as life-like as possible. You know, going all out with the voice commands, and maybe adding an RC mode like Spin Masters BB-8. Who knows, maybe I'll give that a shot one of these days.
@@corellioncrusaderproductio4679 mine have done it twice now. Once with robo interaction and once with human interaction...24 and 48 hours after last being used.
So much packed into the R2D2 it was amazing. I wonder how they do the sound. Been trying to find something to use to play sounds in projects.
I'm not a Star Wars fan but this was a great video. The work that went into it is amazing, well done Vince !
Simply amazing!!! I guess this is what a real R2D2 would have underneath the shell!?!? Or something very similar!? Thanks for sharing!!!
Have six all working great, 3 years later, best droid toys ever.
Vince for broken plastic use super glue to glue the two halves together. Then apply a bead of super glue to where the break is then sprinkle baking soda over the bead of super glue. That will harden like a rock almost instantly. Then just sand if necessary an dust off. An your done. I have fixed loads of things like this.
18:38
Emma is full aware that i might break it completely
3 seconds later........ Breaks it
LOL
Great stuff Vince, I admire what you did with these enormously!
Excellent. Brilliant result as these are unbelievably complex little devices.
41:46
Stripped down r2d2 writhing on the floor looks like a torture scene in some kind of f'd up Quentin Tarantino version of Star Wars.
LOL. A greasy Pet? I think I would pass. You are a better man than I, Mr.V
I sort of get the idea that these aren’t really made to be taken apart ?. Haha. Excellent videos. Love seeing things get fixed … think this was more complicated than the real R2 D2 from the original film !!
Well done 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤘🏻
I’ve had my Sphero R2D2 since my birthday in 2018z and he’s still going strong.
Woohoo one on RUclips and one on Patreon. Night sorted 😁
What a great win !! And Happy New Year to all watching this great channel!
Really interesting video Vince, so enjoyable to watch your faultfinding. Thank you very much for sharing your video content!. Cheers mate!
You must have the patience of a Saint. Brilliant vids keep them coming!
Brilliant video Vince. And Happy New Year to you.
I've repaired a few of these now. I also made an stl of the centre leg cam which is often what breaks when that mechanism doesn't work.
Nice 1 Vince. Looked like a nightmare but a good watch well done for having patience with it.
"May the force be with you young Vince "
Very funny toy and so over-engineered. Congrats on not giving up on these ones. Too bad the parts inside are kind of easy to break or get faulty. I enjoyed this video a lot because i am a Star Wars fan since childhood
For what is the yellow cable at the battery? Can not be for balancing when loading, because it is only a 3,7v battery. I had a dead battery in it and chosed it with a 800mah battery for the Hubsan 107d drone. Fits perfectly in it. Original in the robot is 1400mah. I soldered only the red and black cable on the original plug (red/yellow/black), which goes at the platinum. I didn't load it with the port on the R2D2. At the right back side from R2D2 is a back cover, under this, where the one screw is. There I made a opening for the plugs. You can easy disconnect in this opening the plugs and load the battery. After the battery is complete loaded with my Sky Charger D100, I close the hole with the original cover with his fastening brackets and nobody can see the difference from a R2D2 with the standard battery in it. Now I have more control over the battery. What the status from it is and I can chose a trickle charge, if I do not want drive with R2D2 a long time. If the battery is bad in a few years, I take simply another one in and R2D2 is happy again! NOTICE: For all people which will make that too with her own robot, this MOC is only for accomplished hobbyists. You risk a fire damage!!!!!
The original battery has a yellow wire for an NTC thermistor, embedded in the battery pack, to monitor battery temperature while charging.
@@JPLegat Very interesting. Thank you, that is a good help 😊
Woww you did a great job vince!! And those toys are so so cool!!!
I have one of the R2-D2. I barely play with it because I want to last. But if something goes wrong with it I know what to do thanks to your video.
Ты спас меня, я авто слесарь по специальности, к моего сына такая игрушка и она сломалась, я сказал что с лёгкостью ее починить, но когда я снял первую крышку, я схватился за голову🤯 если бы не ты ..👍
Cool, 👍 You should do more robot repairs even 80s robots. I had the robot with cassette tape player but forgot its name.
'...on the carpet with maybe a greasy pet'
Why do I find this so funny :)
The "3 fingers" are motor brushes..
The motor going faster and longer is resistance differences.. imo if the brushes are bent its very rare you will get it working at 100% again.. good fault find vince! Keep them comming mate!
Also the fingers are shorting the motor when bent in the wrong direction
Nice job Vince! Oh it's always mechanical and definitely always a brushed motor fault as a rule. 😀
Thankyou , my r2 used as an animated ornament, connected to my pc, but recently he doesnt animate any more 😪, looks like i have the same problem you found. Shame i liked him tweaking away in demo mode with having to run the app. I shant be taking him apart as he will break even more. Thanks for this vid 💜🔥💜🇬🇧
Not Connected to app in demo mode
Kinda bummed out when I heard you opened it prior to recording so we couldn't see first reaction and get in there with you at the same time. Couldn't you have just recorded first opening, then added the next part when you bought the second unit? Point is, I like to learn as you learn and experience and you experience. That's part of the magic of your videos.
I thought the same thing, first video shows the initial opening and ending in failure. Then after comments and maybe buying the 2nd model there would be a revisit.
I had a similar issue with one I was repairing recently - I found that the left leg would ONLY work in one R2, but not the other. The other worked in both, so I simply swapped them. (Connector issue?)
I'm surprised you had different connectors for the two right legs - L and R are reversed, but should be the same for the same side leg.
I have a video explaining how the gearbox goes together, and I'll be posting another video soon with some additional tips on how to fix these, including removing the dome without breaking it.
Brilliant!...it looked pretty bad there for awhile, but you came through!
R2D2 has gotta be the best droid there is. Such a character and I reckon a bit of a filthy swearer too!
Happy New Year, Vince.
Love this fix well done Vince 👍🏻
Felt bad when r2 was striped in pieces, beeping. Vince like a mad doctor transplanting parts
I picked up one and yes the centre gear has snapped and in a place where the little nip is so no glueing that ,its a shame nobody's 3d printing this part as it seems to be most broken r2s have this problem in a shoe box it goes with the rest of the maybe laters !
Seen these 🙂 cool item Emma sent vince for a trying to fix
Those prongs in the motor are called brushes Vince, on larger motors they are made of carbon and spring loaded to maintain contact onto the commutator. It was unlikely to be the battery Vince lipos give out their full load current for the entire capacity of the battery with very little fall off.
Very nice fix...gonna buy me one now... Didn't know they existed
THIS REMINDS US OF STAR WARS!!!!
Great repair as always Vince!
Instead of superglue or the soldering iron, have you ever considered using araldite? Its a 2 part apoxy, i use it often to repair laptop hinges, it sets super hard. In fact iv probably repaired over 50 laptop hinges with this stuff and have never had any come back.
As always, thanks for the video i have learnt something new today.
Not apoxy...... Epoxy
@@martinkuliza no big deal i am sure he understood, thank though for the correction, love you
@@buntykainth3699
of course he understood, but Epoxy is one of those words that people may have been told incorrectly at one point and they continue incorrectly forever,

Be Cool
Personally i felt bad for R2 when he had him in pieces and R2 was all limp and disabled and rattling on the table.......Poor R2 i almost cried for him
Thank the Maker he is working again
hello vince, great video, do you fancy fixing an interactive Darth Vadar? he all works except his light saber doesn't light up, could make a intersting video, let me know mate.
That sounds like a pretty simple fix, probably just a loose cable or a burnt LED!
This is mad, I have just bought a bb8 on eBay for 15 pounds that’s says that it won’t hold a charge, hoping to fix it myself after watching your vids. Good luck & thanks for all the content.
The issue with BB8 is that it is a solid shell and I think you would have to destroy the shell to change the battery. I do think I saw a video on replacing the shell somewhere
@@DEmma1972 i saw the video after bidding, looks like i will have to be v careful, ill give it a go though, thought it was to good a bargain. maybe with luck it only needs resetting, you never know.
@@kevinspencer5740 I paid the grand sum of £9.50 + £4 postage for the R2D2 which makes it 1 of the cheapest R2D2 at least in the UK. Best wait till after the xmas inflation lets the price settle down again.
Bro, I literally made a working r2-d2 3 days ago because these ones are expensive and tiny (there is a video about it on my channel) and even if I bought a bigger and cheaper one, it wouldn't be as cool as my r2. It's so cool and I am still adding more details. And it cost me just 15 dollars.
Just to comment, I had three of the r2 units, all had this issue. I finally was sent one that did actually work.looks like it’s a common fault then.
I don’t mean to sound condescending & I know sometimes it’s hard to see the trees through the woods but I’m confused as to why you didn’t think of cutting the PCB cables off & heat shrinking the other connectors back on? (This would have enabled you to swap one PCB as you first intended).
PS. love your vids keep it up
Great job as always vince love the video
it might be an idea to replace the motors with brushless motors (instead of having the rotational field magnets in the rotor, they have them in the stator and thus have no 'fingers' to deal with.)
Great fix, question how do you put the unit into deep sleep? Just turn it off??
Good grief you’ve got some patience what a headache!
Interesting device. Thanks for making this nice video for us (as always). Wouldn't that broken plastic piece be a nice case for baking soda+superglue?
You have five or six cups of Earl Gray during this repair? I’m thinking six and a wee bit of a scotch for sweetener. Always a pleasure your vids. .
Help me vince... You're my only hope
Vince needs a 3d printer and can make replacement parts.
I was thinking exactly the same thing...
Great stuff. Are you self taught?
Hi-five for just having the patience to go through each board...
Good luck remembering were all the parts fit back together !
Nice video, too bad you didnt show the progress on yours, congratz!
Really enjoyed this

Uncle Owen! This R2 unit has a bad motivator!
Hey Vince, since you have your hands full and you cannot fix my camera I tried to fix it myself and also filmed it in case someone needs help or wants to prevent the mistakes that I made. This is hard as f...!! How can you do this on a daily basis lol. It takes so much time with the filming and talking, I even did not cut the 2h footage down and im also not completely done. One little fault 16h of work. WOW! I think I will go back to watch your videos chill vanilli in my bed haha :).
Thanks for the video interesting. Happy new year.
"What do you mean? My parts are showing?"
Well done!
Hear and hear. See hear. Little tabs hear. Broke hear. (All in jest. Love your vids and subscribed.)
Great job I have clock RD2D may put motors on it at a later date
Many thanks for your superb video Vince.
I tried to disassemble one of these awhile back and never got as far as being able to take the dome off.
A new problem with all of these droids that people will encounter when they buy them second hand is that if they don’t already have the Sphero iPhone/android app, the company has removed it from the App Store and Google.
I therefore wondered if you knew any way to be able to custom install the app if you don’t already have it stored in your cloud back up.
Reason being, I wanted to give one of the BB8 droids to a friend’s child in the street but obviously in the absence of the app it’s just a nicely engineered ornament. I wondered if you had any ideas how I could do to get it going again.? I’ve actually contacted Sphero and they offer no help whatsoever as they no longer sell them and have moved on to different things.
Thanks again.
Google for the app and you'll find it.
Someday you will be 3d printing your own pieces instead of melting them together
My thaughts exactly! The repaired part will not be ever so strong as a new or 3D printed one!
I’ve been watching your videos since I was six
Happy New Year everyone. Vince bled for your enjoyment, least you can do is hit Like on the videos.
This is a cool model. I believe this one also like your bb8 will react when watching Star wars with them :-)
