Silverchair.....Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time.
First few albums are good stuff
Newcastle represent
Lmao 2nd rate nirvana man love that name used it a lot in teen years 😂😂😂😂
Silverchair kicks ass! 🤘🏻🔥
Love silverchair
It all comes from “into the void” by Black Sabbath.
Whoa that riff you play "Rewind your mind"??? Straight Fire🔥🔥🔥
1:07 Could we say it's some Black Sabbath's kind of scale? They had a big influence on grunge and stoner after all
Definitely, Iommi is the reason so many of us are here
I can relate
Sounds like the void
Its still the blues scale lol. Thats what iommi played....they were a blues band originally.
@@LeonTodd the whole truth
Most of Alice in chains stuff is actually half a step down but Jerry cantrells 2nd rampage he got was drop d tuning half step down
Yeah I love playing a half step down
@Jason Weaver lol yep.
Yeah, I think most of "Dirt" is Eb standard tuning. I say "I think" because I only know how to play a few songs off that album and that's what they're tuned to.
@@YukonDemon layne staley era AIC is all E flat tuning, or drop C#.. only song I can think of thats not is over now in some open c# tuning
Eb for life :D
I can hear Ozzy yelling ALRIGHT NOW😂😂...KINDA SOUNDS LIKE BLACK SABBATH
NAILED IT ! Yes it sounds like Bad Motofinger and AIC, great stuff my bro ! Silverchair even, I was 30 when all this happened and it was a fantastic musical awakening, the power and expression of it all. Happy to see the torch passed. Thanks for posting this.
Definitely a great era!
I grew to like Alice In Chains and soundgarden a few years back. Cause an old buddy of mine family tree goes back to Kurt Cobain
Very random reason to get into these bands lmao
I grew to like the Bible because an old buddy of mine family tree goes back to Adam
Sdp heyyyy brotherrrrrr
@@maxanderson2925 you too?
Sdp yezzir
Didn't know King's x, already found some interesting songs, thanks ("the world around me" is nice)
Great one Leon. I also love those albums and the types of playing. You demonstrate it in a really accessible way. 👍🏽👍🏽
Here's to good grungy rock!! 🤟🏽🖤♠️
I know that this video is old, but I just saw it and oh the sound and the glory! I loved those albums as well. I was 24 and delivery pizzas when Nevermind and Badmotorfinger came out. Still adore that sound to this day. Thanks for this!
That tone is perfect!
Really great video. Lots of cool info here for any grunge wanna be's. Well done.
I'm glad I found this! Grew up loving Soundgarden, AIC and the whole grunge scene. Just started playing the guitar last year and I want to learn as much grunge sound as I can!
Awesome! It's so fun
I don't even play guitar but this video still really helped me! I often make grunge oriented beats so this is some nice knowledge to have. Thanks great video, I followed
I heard you talk about alice in chains I liked without seeing the video, I like it a lot man
Love the videos. Keep up the awesome work!
A Nirvana video would be killer showing how to do the controlled feedback technique, etc. I haven't seen anyone do that yet.
New kiwi fan here mate. Love the approach...love the grungy 90’s stuff too. Your band sounds killer....gonna have to check it out. Keep it up bro.
Thanks so much man. I'd love to play in NZ one day
And you really should gig over here! Enjoying the vids bro! All the best mate
Awesome Vid ! Huge inspiration and help and your band is sick, cheers
Thanks a ton!
Brilliant video, I'd love to hear you talk about some clean grunge tones. My writing style sits somewhere between soundgarden/pearl jam and pumpkins early work. I can never seem to nail a clean sound down though!
I only just picked up guitar about a year ago and haven't written a ton but personally I can get a sort of clean grunge thing going if I write songs on acoustic without even thinking about how it will sound on electric. No fuzz from the beginning makes the product cleaner, because you're making something that sounds good without it.
Timbre? Tube screamer.
Really cool lesson! Will definitely add to my arsenal. Subscribed👍
Thanks for the sub!
Awesome stuff!
That open droning g and 9th sounds bomb
You can really hear Alice In Chains influence in your song! Absolutely amazing man
❤️
The Seattle scale! That’s a keeper!
SICK video dude, thank you so much!!
Thankyou!
Very good sound!
I’m using my Marshall DSL5C with a boss sd-1 it getting them grunge tones really well I’m shocked
Love your videos Leon, gonna hafta check out your band Rag doll! Judging by ur accent your across the pond from me,but that doesn’t mean i cant listen to ur music.🇺🇸
Please do and let me know what you think! Hopefully we'll be back on tour in the states next year :)
Hey really like your content, great info for getting the "sound". There's a band you might be interested in checking, great raw Grunge sound, I can't believe they flew under my radar, Senium, Anything You Say. Enjoy.
Your band sounds badass!
Thanks for checking it out!
I discovered your channel when i was looking for a good review on the Laney GH100 and yours was the best one on youtube i own a Laney GH100Ti great amp
Awesome to hear, what an amp!
The droning G thing sounds really cool.
Your first riff sounds like Dam That River.
Instant Jerry vibe hey
Awesome!
Agreed Killer tone
nailed it!!!
1:10 sounds like Black Sabbath Yeah
Kings X!! I met them in Edinburgh on the Gretchen tour! Nice lesson dude….
Very cool! What a great band
Wow great video...
Man this stuff is really cool! In your opinion would you be able to mix this sort of stuff with the way Adam Jones plays?
Definitely!
You can also find this scale on one of the L7’s son called “Bad things”
Man that Ragdoll group is cool
Cool video
You rock
Nice tone ;)
our band sound influence :)
Soundgarden kicks ass
Just basically playing in the penatonic scale or blues scale as you said
Awesome stuff!!! Great advices and tips! Can you please share what kind of pedals are you using for such a badass sound?
Thanks. Playing thru an Axe-Fx here.
Your musics awesome holy shit
Thankyou!
I can totally hear the Alice influence
Can you show us how they use the blues scale through the fret? From these power chords I can't personally puzzle out how scales work.
Just play the lowest note - instant blues scale.
Reminds me of Intronaut too honestly
No dislikes nice
Hope you make a video on riffs from C.O.C. luv Deliverance album...
in this scale there's also blew by nirvana
I forgot silverchair existed until now. Thank you
When I heard you play the scale I just heard anger rising lmao
You too?
Great sound! What amp do you use?
5:18 Sounds a bit like Tool here
Big time!
I enjoyed every bit of this video man, thanks! Someone could help me getting which strings Leon is playing on 4:35?
Me!Low to high - 1 1 1 0 3 x
@@LeonTodd 🙏❤
Are you only playing the low to strings? What amp and pedal and mic setup are you using? Its sounds amazing
you can play low three strings for the power chord
Nice kings x reference
Great lesson. What Ax8 patch is that? Sounds killer.
It's the Friedman BE with a V30 IR :)
4:37 To me that chord brings some shoegaze vibes
What about song Melodys for Alice In Chains type songs
I dont like grunge...... I love it!!!
King's X!
YES!
Note for note at 4:36 Wasteland 10 Years. Silverchair was one of the originators of drop tunings. Really Enjoyed this one LT.
hard to believe they did what they did at such a young age.
Led Zeppelin actually used it a lot along with the DADGAD tuning on Kashmir....
While silverchair were fingering themselves over drop d in 1995 machine head where in drop B in 94 so thats ballax
The Melvins did it in the 80s. They pretty much taught all the grunge bands how to downtune
LMAO George Harrison of the Beatles played in alternate tunings
How can I get my humbuckers to be less aggressive? They're not covered, and I can't get them covered. I have a Squier Mustang. Two humbuckers.
Bring your treble or presence down on your amp
Are you using a fractal unit for this video?? Sounds great!
Yes. Cheers!
Exactly:
AIC, Silverchair & Iommi
Extremely distorted humbucker guitars & the blues scale
👉
Grunge
Do you have any advice for writing a full song? I got a killer riff but I don’t know where to go after that.
You need to structure your songs. So tou have a cool riff that should be for your chorus now make another riff for your verses and build around that. If you want a pre chorus, Bridge, solo or breakdown those are elements you can add
Write another riff. Boom you got a chorus. Leave bridge and solo you can add that later.
Put the tab scale, please!!!
that scale reminded me of electric funeral by black sabbath
Big time, Iommi pioneered all this
What about the string gauge?
This guitar looks really cool. What is it?
My band is kinda the grunge sound.. and alot of what o write is using these same progressing riffs and didn't know it.. wow.. amazing.. it's good to know someone is still rocking out early 90's .maybe we can gig together!!!! Hit me up bro!!!
Now do the same thing on acoustic guitar for Days Of The New
H-he called “Israel’s Son” “Son of Israel” 😂
Same thing lol
Lmao I had a stroke hearing him call it like that
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅🤣😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅🤣😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅🤣😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
New Drinking Game: Every time a RUclipsr comes up with a new clickbaity name for the blues scale, take a shot.
So far I've seen "classic rock," "boomer," now "grunge" apparently.
A good example is Blew by Nirvana
I see a Bacchus LP! Is that the new series??
I think it's a limited edition (belongs to their distributor here in Aus) but I'll double check. Incredible axe.
What pedal is he using here? That’s awesome!
Probably the AX8 on this, if my memory serves me correctly
Leon Todd cheers man!
5:18 too dirty my man
Far out
Is the drop c# just the low E?
Tuning is C# G# C# F# A# D#
Drop C sharp
Blues Scale
Write songs like oasis, nirvana & john lennon?
Do you just tune the bottom E string to C#? I did that and now the one finger power chords don't sound in tune. Sorry, I'm new to the whole drop tuning stuff.
your third string down has to be a C# too when means your A string goes down to aswell
First standard tuning, then drop D, Them drop all the strings down a half step
Alice in Chains was d# standard
A lot of aic is in drop c# aswell
What brand is you Les Paul?
Bacchus
@@LeonTodd Thanks
He talm bout the locrian scale
Nvm
Very Black Sabbathy. (Tell me if that's even a word)
If it's not it should be!
Not sure that’s how you play outshined
is he just playing velvet revolver over and over?
thats heavy stuff...what amp?
Fractal AX8 Friedman BE model.
What about Nirvana??
nirvanas stuff was a mixture of genres
a LOT of alternative rock in there
Lol
hahaha.. first time ive heard a blues scale called the grunge scale
I don't like calling the flat/phrygian second flat NINE. Doesn't make sense to me, when it's about riffs not chords
