I find it interesting like how Anthony said they all kinda emphasized different sounds Alice has, and in my opinion that just stands as a testament to how one of a kind Alice In Chains was / is that four people each chose a different, distinct sound from their albums that all sounded killer.
As everyone has said, all 4 of you did great but yeah, Steve's killed it for me right away. The dynamics in his version was the exact era of AiC that I loved the most.
I love how you each captured a different essence of Layne and I think he would have been very proud of this lol. Amazing work guys!!! I'd love to see the 4 of you colab for a full version of this song!!!
Everyone is great! Steve was awesome. Denis was spot on with the vibe out of the gate. Mac has an AMAZING voice that really grew on me (I came back to listen to his part several times) and I recommend others check out his channel. His take is insanely good and I feel like although Steve was the best AIC "flavor" on this video, Mac had the most raw emotion and it sounds like something I'd listen to as a single lol. Anthony had a very "self-titled album" feel that was unique, very good as well. All these guys are awesome. AIC is my favorite band so this was a treat for sure. As a fellow long term musician I love to see what others can do out there.
This is perfect. I was raised on AIC. The wife is 4 years younger and raised on bubblegum pop. I have finally found the tie that binds us. I mean, we're in love and all, but THIS is what will pull our worlds together in harmony.
Steve wins hands down. What makes his version so different from the others is the amount of variations he uses which makes the whole thing so much more dynamic and authentic.
I think what really sold Steve's version was the riff. All of them did amazing vocal impressions but having a catchy guitar riff really made his stand out.
Honestly got chills from EACH entry...as an old, hardcore fan of Staley and AIC, this whole exhibition made me feel a certain way. Amazing work by all and such a fun idea!!
I like Denis's version, cause he immediately hit into goal "to transfer the total spirit of Alice in chains in 30 sec". Also Mac Glocky's work is brilliant, he performed acoustic and it has clearly recognition of both: AIC and BSB in one.
I think Denis has the closest AIC tone but Mac made the best tribute to the song without “changing” the core of the song yet maintaining the AIC signature, overall the 4 were brilliant 👏🏼👏🏼
Each one ended up making a version for an album/phase of the band. That was amazing!! But Steve's version could be on Facelift and nobody would say it's a BSBoys song or that Layne wasn't singing it. I'm just exaggerating :), but I felt it when I saw this song for the first time on his channel. Audio delivery at a very high level (sounding like the album) and a well-made video. Be careful not to lose your job, Duvall.... You guys were amazing and we look forward to more projects like this one!
Mac’s sounds very Audioslave-y and it’s awesome! But overall Steve and Denis slayed it best imo. Steve went for Facelift and Denis went for Dirt, and it SLAPS
This was a real treat, both hearing this song in the style of Alice in Chains, but several styles of Alice in Chains. Not to mention introducing me to three brilliant artists I'd never heard of before. Gonna check their channels now.
You guys all did an amazing job. Hearing this makes me appreciate how amazing the duo of Layne and Jerry was. How their sound is so hard to replicate and how much they accomplished before they were even 30, just to have it all fly away.
All the tracks had that AIC sound but for me Dennis' version was the best, an I want it that way/Angry chair hybrid. Maybe the final two had more musical theory and technical similarities to AIC's music but that first track stuck in my head and made me search for this vid again today, a couple of months since I first saw it. Kudos to all the guys for their tracks
As a man who grew up around Alice In Chains via my father this is hard to choose who done it better! You guys all done excellent versions of I want it that way and it’s hard to choose! Mac done an amazing acoustic version like the MTV unplugged sessions, Dennis, Anthony and Steve all done amazing heavy rock (if that’s what Alice In Chains is, pls correct if wrong since I’ll be honest I’m not sure if AIC is heavy rock, rock or metal). The winner for me is all four as though Steve deserves the win they all won with how much nostalgia this bought me and just a lot of memories of this band I absolutely love to death. Can you do this again next time with life is a highway in AIC style alongside Jonathan Young, Dennis, Mac and Steve with Caleb Hyles as the judge? It would be amazing to see this turn into a series. Thank you for the nostalgia trip (though I’m 20 next year) and can’t wait for this to become a series
All are awesome. Steve's version gave me chills. I saw AIC multiple times and if I didn't know ahead of time I would have sworn it was a unreleased track from the archives. Well done!
They all did great! Steve won for me. It actually sounds like they made this song themselves. I also love that he threw in Jerry’s vocals with Layne. That was brilliant
I agree 100% that was the same order I had. What Steve had that no other had is that powerful voice Layne had in Facelift and Dirt as well as nailing the harmonies. It comes to that because musically you guys all nailed it.
Yeah, I gotta say, everyone was excellent, but I think my favorite was the acoustic take. It brought back all those memories of 90s unplugged versions by grunge bands. I thought Anthony's was so tight too. The low harmonies at 11:14 actual gave me chills remembering the first time I heard Alice N' Chains.
"I want it that way" is one of my guilty pleasure songs, so it was really cool to see these guys put their spin on it within the realm of AIC. They were all great. I hope you do this again. It was a lot of fun to watch.
This is absolutely amazing. Please tell me you're going to do more of these! All 4 had moments where my brain was just like "yup, that's AIC". Steve did deserve the win, but Mac's "Tell me why" chorus vocal was so perfect I fell out of my chair.
for me Mac is the winner. definately all are great, but his variant just was the most harmonized and different from the others. anyways it would be great to see more such competitive videos!
as Jonathan mentioned, they all captured different eras of AIC but my pick would've been Mac's just because he took a very emotionless pop song and turned it into something pure. I seriously got chills and would love to hear a full version of this interpretation. awesome job guys all around.
This was awesome, this feels like it could be a new series. I'd love to see what different artists do to turn unrelated songs into the styles of Sabbath, Zeppelin, Queen, etc.
As an old AIC fan I'd love to see these guys create a whole album of "new" AIC songs - I would never believe I'd rock that hard to a Backstreet Boys song!
I would have voted for Steve's version as well because it's actually the one the made me laugh the most (which is always a good sign when you match lyrics from a boy band with music from the cultural opposite genre) but Anthony wins in terms of visuals ! That blurry picture with the blue-purple and copper-colored lighting is EXACTLY that 90's grungy visual used in many videos from that 1991-1994 era and especially one that AIC would have favored.
This was fantastic! I'm hoping that this concept of 4 musicians taking a song, doing it in another artist's style and having a judge pick the winner will continue. The possibilities are endless! Kudos to all involved.
You know what the best part of this vid was? How much all of the musicians looked like they were enjoying every version they heard. It didn't matter that they were in a "competition" they just enjoyed hearing some good music.
Love ya Anthony, but sorry, my vote is Steve. He pulled a curveball and did the William Duvall era AIC and absolutely killed that. Also, he did what I had envisioned of the chorus before I heard anything, which is Jerry leading with the "tell me why" and Layne doing the rest of the line. The chorus for the first two guys' had the combined harmony for the whole thing, and Anthony had two Layne's.
I can't believe it Steve Welsh and Pauna are my two favorite RUclipsrs when ut comes to mixing bands and songs! And you got them to be in the same video especially after all the time I was waiting for Welsh to repost!? THANK YOU!
Not even that far into Steve's rendition I said "he wins". He pulled out all the stops and took something from each Layne era album and put them all into one song. It was AIC in a...Nutshell lol They all sounded great 👍
I don't know what harmonies Layne and Jerry would normally do in terms of intervals, but they always had a very distinct sound that I don't think I've heard anyone else do the same way. All four of you guys nailed those harmonies, which is always what I think of when I think of Alice in Chains. Fantastic job!
@@zachw2538 really? I’ve always been confused about how they randomly “discovered” the power of perfect 4th harmonies after centuries of music being played. Makes a lot more sense that they’re actually 5ths…. Very interesting
@Daniel Winschel maybe the purity of the Seattle scene and the support from the other musicians there while also pushing innovation in such a creative ground breaking environment
@@Dagnus284 yeah, it really all depends on context, composers do use fourths but the tonality and functionality is different from inverted fifths and sounds different in its musical context.
This could be a recurring series! It definitely works best with a song artist or band that has a long history and could be done in a number of ways, something like Queen or Nirvana!

I think what really sold Steve's version was the riff. All of them did amazing vocal impressions but having a catchy guitar riff really made his stand out.
Hard not to smile listening to Steve’s rendition. But more importantly I think we can all agree that we need full versions of all of these!
Please PLEASE do more of this.
The format is fun as hell and you fucking nailed it.
Honestly got chills from EACH entry...as an old, hardcore fan of Staley and AIC, this whole exhibition made me feel a certain way. Amazing work by all and such a fun idea!!
Me too, exactly.
I'd like to be in an AIC cover band
I agree I liked Steve's the most. Everyone did an excellent job. I loved hearing different takes on the same song.
I loved how "dark" Denis' part sounded! All 4 really cool versions in their on way.
Definitely enjoyed seeing how everyone interpreted that concept, but I had Steve and Mac as the top two choices.
It's incredible how you all hit different AIC sounds. Super impressive.
Steve Walsh is amazing, and I'm glad these guys are collaborating
Mac’s sounds very Audioslave-y and it’s awesome! But overall Steve and Denis slayed it best imo. Steve went for Facelift and Denis went for Dirt, and it SLAPS
This was a real treat, both hearing this song in the style of Alice in Chains, but several styles of Alice in Chains. Not to mention introducing me to three brilliant artists I'd never heard of before. Gonna check their channels now.
That was tight. Didn't expect to enjoy the acoustic one, but that seriously took me straight into an Alice in Chains MTV Unplugged special
All were really great . Like dude said each one brought something different to the table. Steve did bring that AIC OG grit from the jump.
You guys all did an amazing job. Hearing this makes me appreciate how amazing the duo of Layne and Jerry was. How their sound is so hard to replicate and how much they accomplished before they were even 30, just to have it all fly away.
This is SUCH a dope video!! Personally Dennis takes the cake for me, everyone was amazing though and the acoustic rendition was phenomenal! :)
The pure talent from these four is amazing. Every song they made was outstanding
Steve nailed Jerry and Layne and the harmonies and all the back and fourth. I need to listen to AIC immediately now.
Well done!
Thank you for featuring Mac Glocky! Overall, awesome video, loved the concept, artist, everything, I liked all of the renditions!
This is awesome! Love me some AIC
I would also go with Steve’s rendition. They were all fantastic though. Really enjoyed this video! Wouldn’t mind seeing others like it!
Dude I just commented the same thing, those vocals and the harmony legit sound like it's Layne himself singing.
This rendition was my favorite as well, it was genius
I got chills when Steve's part came on. Just brilliant! Steve wins for me.
Believe it or not but there's so many rock and metal covers of the Backstreet Boys! My favorite is Mors Principium Est "The Call"👌
More please! Really interesting to see everyone's different perspectives and creations. Awesome!
You know what the best part of this vid was? How much all of the musicians looked like they were enjoying every version they heard. It didn't matter that they were in a "competition" they just enjoyed hearing some good music.
This needs to be a full series of all different songs and eras!!! Got goosebumps hearing Steve's version. Loved it all
Steve Welsh is such a beast... IMO, while all we're great, Steve's showed the deepest understanding of the vibe, composition and musicality of AiC
Sorry, Anthony, I haven’t heard yours yet, but I can’t imagine anything topping what Steve just did.
LOL true
THANK YOU!
Mac and Steve really nailed it for me! all amazing jobs
Not even that far into Steve's rendition I said "he wins". He pulled out all the stops and took something from each Layne era album and put them all into one song. It was AIC in a...Nutshell lol
They all sounded great 👍
Steve had a great approach. Take a soft ballad-y song, raise tempo and aggression. The yin-yang was effective
All awesome. The acoustic one reminded me of the Stereophonics as well.
Third one takes it for me, but seriously well done all
All of them nailed it, but I've got to give the win to Steve with Anthony coming in at a very, very close second.
Each of you were brilliant!! But Steve did kinda become Jerry and Layne.
Mad props to all of you. The acoustic rendition was inspired!
Those last 2 were sooo good! The Welsh one was my favorite. Great job to all of ya 🤘
I don't know what harmonies Layne and Jerry would normally do in terms of intervals, but they always had a very distinct sound that I don't think I've heard anyone else do the same way. All four of you guys nailed those harmonies, which is always what I think of when I think of Alice in Chains. Fantastic job!
They did a lot of perfect 4ths
@@darangatang2804 so yes, but they're treated as inverted fifths contextually
