This video was absolutely filthy, especially that "4th of July" Soundgraden riff on that SG, sounded vicious. Another great grunge riff that you'd probably love is "Tyler" by Toadies. Super underrated 90s grunge group from Texas. Their '94 release "Rubberneckers" has even more filthier riffs.
Kim Thayil cites it in an interview as one of his favorites, and requests it when asked to play live with AIC (check for Kim/AIC footage with William Duvall singing). He also used it at the MoPop tribute to AIC, with Shaina Shepherd singing. They killed it :)
"Black Sabbath meets The Beatles" is how i usually describe grunge in the simplest of terms. I know it has roots in punk music but most people dont know the differences between genres/subgenres when it comes to rock, metal, or punk... so yeah.
@Luigi Conder kurt himself loved the Beatles and nirvana is full of melody, hooks, and simplicity Dave Grohl: "Our songs were simple. They were children songs, that was the unspoken rule." (Might be paraphrasing.) That's what makes me think of the Beatles. "Black Sabbath meets the Beatles" is a good way to describe Nirvana to someone who's never listened to them. Obviously more experienced music lovers would compare them to the pixies instead but not everyone has heard of Nirvana or the Pixies. Most people know the Beatles though lol
Appreciate you playing some deep cuts and getting heavy n dirty with them. The 90's are the decade when I fell in love with the guitar. The love affair remains strong!
Sillverchair definitely took the riff from MS. Silverchair fans usually say Slave was created years before it was released and that may be true but if you listen to Slave in 1995(it's on YT) the riff sounds much different than the album version.
"OH!" Is what I said when the black screen made me think my phone suddenly died. I wouldn't have the ending any other way though, it really fits the mood of the video. Good job
I saw green river live at two reunion shows..green river is one of my favorites!I met mark arm at a show here in Seattle and got him to sign my green river CD book and a few mudhoney CD books and gave 2 of them to my concert homies .still I finally met mark !it was a few years ago but I'm still stoked about it!

@@GerM_tbo True. I'd completely forgotten about bands and songs that aren't on Spotify, like My Sister's Machine. Mudhoney concert early 90's at The Metro in Chicago... I've never seen the whole crowd move from one side of the floor to the other so quickly. These guys were consistently amazing live.
One of the things I've always loved abt really early grunge riffage Is how dreary it is, Leech, P.C.C., Skins In My Closet, With Yo Heart Not Yo Hands, Slow Runner. Just dirty fat riffs that make you feel like you're running from shadows in an inky alleyway.
Great video, there’s so many brilliant grunge riffs. Thanks to you & the comments section for leading me to discover so many new songs. 4th of July sounded absolutely brutal on the SG by the way!
So many really cool riff what's represents to my feels, life, and....I'm just really glad for those couple surprise track. The full video an awesome job with insanely incredible choices! You know I watched this when Mark Lanegan's 🕊️ passed and I really feel now the "grunge is dead" but you playing Screaming Trees and I just...man....c'mon man! I'm so happy and smile to up, U know! Btw. one of my fave was the Mad Season 🙏🏻 Thank you dude, keep it up!!! GRUNGE iS NOT DEAD! 💜😎✌🏻
Great list and great covers of them 👌 Nice to see some different nirvana ones up there, think this list was a “negative creep” away from being perfect lol Really enjoyed it, well done buddy
So happy you put in Plump, such a fucking good song. Hole+Courtney Love are the marmite of Grunge, but you gotta admit that for such a simple riff it's excellent. Got a real mix between jangly and menacing.
Man 4th of july is one of the heaviest darkest riffs period. That song is a masterpiece. Good list!
Alice in chains Am I inside is the darkest song I've ever heard, it's not heavy tho
@@chriscornell8810 Have you heard frogs?
Easily one of the heaviest
Yea, it definitely leans into doom metal territory
Not really lmao you haven't heard much metal
Grunge is one of the few “musical fads” that has aged like a fine wine

Dude you really nailed the tones on these riffs, also I love your player jaguar and your playing, Great video!
Thank you!
@@bloxsy_ your welcome :)
@@bloxsy_ seriously!! What pedals were you using??
@@therealnagel the white noisey sound in Them Bones reminds me of a super high gain distortion pedal like a DOD Grunge or something similar

4th Of July is a sick riff. Just so woozy. You want to speed it up when you play it on guitar. That would be wrong.
Playing SG on an SG...what a concept!
that song is in drop Z
@@silhouettoofaman2935 Kim Thayil didn't play an sg, he played a guild s-100
Oh man, Rubberneck is perfection!
It Ain’t Like That is such a dark and heavy riff. Still one of my favourites. Great job as always!
All time great Grunge riff
metal riff Alice in Chains is heavy metal

Grunge, one of my favorite and influential genres, isnt dead, but in a other way alive.
The attitude will always remain because it has that punk rock influence, the music may be dead but the attitude will always stay alive
Grunge didn't exist. They were different genres but with similar lyrics
Came for the L7, heard L7. I'm satisfied
Listen to El pibe de los astilleros by Los Redondos. You'll be surprised
thanks for putting "i don't know anything" in the video. i love that riff, it's so easy and yet sounds special
Room a Thousand Years wide is underappreciated. Glad you included it.
My fav Soundgarden song
It's so good probably my favorite Soundgarden riff
Mine as well. Love soundgarden and it's so hard to pick a fav song for me, but i always come back to room a thought years wide
That tone you got on Breed is absolutely filthy. Spot on. Same on Hunger Strike. Fantastic tone. Well done.
Perfect pedal/amp/downtune combo to replicate the sludge Kim Thayil was oozing on "4th of July"
I LOVE that you added riffs from the trees, malfunkshun, green river and tad those bands are great but sadly underrated

4 songs of Chris Cornell in this video, always a pleasure hearing this
I just realized how close Mad Season - I Don't Know Anything is to Silverchair - Slave
@Téo Nicácio Yessss, I've thought about these ones already lol
