- Hey everyone! Welcome back to another video... we've been meaning to get this one out, and now it is finally here! I'd like you to meet my new apprentice, Atikan. He has been behind the scenes with me (along with my partner on Saturdays) working for the past month and a half, and helping me get these houses done - This one and the last one so far!
Bringing a good attitude to work every day, I hope he can make the most out of his apprenticeship, and that I can be a good leader to direct him in the right path - learning from my own experiences when I was an apprentice.
With that being said, we will be looking for our next apprentice, so if you are someone who is interested in taking on a Cert III Bricklaying apprenticeship, please enquire on our Facebook page will be linked below.
Now that we have shown our apprentice, we can start uploading more frequently for you all so that you can see the progression both Atikan and I make as we continue this journey through the bricklaying industry - as a young business owner and leader of a team.
I hope you enjoy the video, and can be apart of our journey that is Bricks by Ty!

Congrats Ty for your 6th, looking forward to see your 7th...and more.
Good on ya, mate. Young, fresh in the business and expanding.
Job well done. Looks great.
Good on you, i worked for a family bricklaying company, all willing to teach, did heaps of hard labouring, worked in Sewer Tunnels, all back braking work. ❤️ It's , nice to see you giving opportunities. Im 56 still working and enjoy developing people's skills, like my family did previously✅
Thanks for that, and respect!
Hi guys. I live in Sydney. I love your videos and I am watching you daily. Please keep posting. As well I am following you in Facebook. Thanks heaps
I can relate too much with the labouring as an apprentice. I'm currently a thrid year and have been labouring for the last two years but really try to get on the trowel as much as possible. And also,it must be nice to always have the ability to just do single stories, especially that one,the walls are solid and what we call a "money wall". And the bricks look nice to lay along with the type of mud and access...The bricks we have are bent and harder to lay, also mud goes off like a rocket,I wish I could just be there to lay with ease haha. Anyways another great quality video, nice intro as well👍Just watch the sun doesn't shine too much in the camera but top stuff other than that
We've all been there labouring! You'll get there eventually, just need to keep pushing! I want to eventually move into doubles however we have to build a solid team first. Thanks for your comment and watching our video!
Mate good on you for getting your apprentice on the trowel early.. its soo good seeing you giving them a chance to learn..
Unfortunately during my apprenticeship it was just me and my boss and I hardly touched my trowel during the 3 years.. I got dodged but now am in commercial and getting some practice in but still labouring
Thanks for that! And that's unfortunate, but in spite of that it is good you did something about it! Well done!
@@bricksbyty Thanks mate appreciate it..
I wasn't going to let one person get in the way of my goal of becoming a good brickie.
watching from ireland keep up the good work
Hey mate keep being a legend in the trade I’m a 1st year and my boss has showed me a lot and I’ve learned heaps from him the thing that I find the most difficult is keeping bond
Thanks for that! In terms of keeping bond, it's all about perspective, but you can try a few things -1. l
Line up the edge of the brick with the same bond course below. 2. Depending on the holes of the brick, keep the middle hole in line with the perps of the course beneath. 3. Keep all your perps the same size! The bond is set with a defined perp size, if you try and match was was set out originally on the first course, you should be able to stay on bond. Try those things and come back to this video! Thanks for watching!
I find putting plum lines on the insulation helps on long runs also
Third year apprentice in Ontario, Canada first year was a mix of labour and laying after that all I’ve ever done is lay everyday unless you lay you don’t get better sometimes your have to fight you way in the wall
hey Ty awesome vid, Atikan doing good aswell I would be very keen to do some work with except I'm in WA
Excelente y muy hermoso trabajo 💯💯💯🧱🧱🧱🧱👌👌👌saludos desde chile
Gracias! Very cool to know we have a viewer from Chile!
Glad you said something, cause I was originally from Perth and move to Melbourne I was wondering the entire time, why it wasn’t double brick and how sparkies got their cables down 😂
MashaAllah Great houses 🏗️🏘️🏘️🏘️
In perth most houses are double skin mate , our soil is really sandy so it's a good foundation with little movement . Still get houses that are timber framed here and there probably veneer but uncommon .
Interesting! Thanks for sharing your insight!
My apprentice just turned 3rd year. I took a risk when I put him on hired a labourer and threw him in the deep end on the trowel. He got apprentice of the year 2 years in a row. Getting them on the trowel early is the best thing I completely agree with what your doing it's the right move and hope it pans out well for you mate! Look forward to seeing his progression throughout his apprenticeship!
Thanks for that! Consistency is key as they say. We hope you enjoy watching our journey through this apprenticeship with Atikan
I can already tell he’s an honest bloke and keen like the mix he maid with out cement was good him being honest To u and throwing the mix away my dads bricky costed my dad $6000 coz he wasn’t putting cement in all the mixes for a whole wall
Off camera we put the batch back into the mixer with no water and added cement, and it came out as normal. It's very hard to find honest and reliable workers, so we will try our best to look after the ones we find!
@@bricksbyty Ye that would work good on him keep it up boys
@@bricksbyty I had a 35 year old laborer do it twice and wanted 35 an hour to labour. Haha see ya
If your dad was a bricky he'd be able to tell if the muck he was using had no cement in it😂 it would just be watery sand..
@@MrCharlan1 also the colour would just like the sand only darker yea??
Nice vid
Maybe start him off on a smaller marshaltown trowel to get used to spreading snd the movement how I started lol thanks
Thanks for the advice!
It’s my favourite job form Germany 🇩🇪 🤗🤗
Great video! Thinking about being bricklaying apprentice. Would you mind letting me know what the pay rate per hour for adult bricklaying apprentice is (> 21 years old)? Thanks
Hey there! $23.12 per hour for the rate!
I'm from the Northeast United States Rhode Island I wish I could work I'm those one-story brick houses all the time they are few and far between around here most of the houses have vinyl siding or wood shingles there might be a little bit of brick work on the front of the house and the stick on Stone has become real popular
Interesting! It's nice to hear what sort of work is done outside of Australia!
greetings from Denmark
Hahah every time you say “put him on the wall” reminds me of GOT, might aswell while his on the wall, give him the black. 😂
qld thinking bout a bricklaying apprenticeship
Just a question, are there anything other than those brown bricks in Australia?
There is, however we just get allocated them quite often!
No worries mate, just curious!
Thanks for the reply.
What are differences between apprentice and labourer? Will you pay labourer higher?
Generally a labourer would be paid higher as their responsibilities only revolve around the physically intense portion of the job, whereas an apprentice has a set pay rate that increases with each year whilst they learn the trade.
Stabila has a lifetime warranty on the vials I went to the place where I bought mine and ask them about it they told me if there is something wrong I could leave it there and a stabila rep would give me a new one or replace the vial or you might have to contact Stabila and mail it to them they will replace it as long as the level is Not Bent
That's a good idea!... if I could find the receipt haha... ah well
I don't think you need the receipt
Even if you have to buy another one because if they want to fix it you would be without it for a couple weeks it's worth a try to see if you can get it fixed for free because they're so expensive they cost about 130 US dollars here they're probably more expensive in Australia
Does going to TAFE while in school count as apprenticeship?
Hey there! I'm not sure on that one... sounds to me like it would if you have access to go to TAFE during that period in the first place
@@bricksbyty aight thx

Could of done a better with keeping the mud cut off the back that looks terrible
That has to be illegal how close that house is to the next one like less than 20 mm
Houses with zero boundary placement are a common thing here in Melbourne!
Uhh uhh lol
