From the very beginning, you heard and understood everything that was happening, and it was clear that you could FEEL what they were singing about. this song is a masterpiece, and my favorite song of all time. Dalton Trumbo visited a hospital where he witnessed a man in close to this condition. He went on to write a book called "Johnny Got His Gun" which inspired the movie that is sampled in the video. James Hetfield, lead singer of Metalica, read Johnny Got His Gun and wrote One.

@@corvettefever360 The video does indeed come from that stor,y and the video from the subsequent movie, which Meallica bought the rights to. However, James had the idea for a man like the one in the song before he ever heard of "Johnny Get Your Gun." The idea wasn't yet fully formed and not necessarily yet a solider, he simply imagined what it would be like to be alive but trapped in your body and cut off from the rest of the world. He mentioned to idea to Metallica co-manager Cliff Bernstein, and Bernstein put him on to "Johnny" and the book. From there James tailored the song to the circumsance of the movie. A truly brilliant piece of work.
Metallica actually bought the Rights to the movie to be able to use it in the video. The Charismatic Voice does an excellent reaction to this as well.

The movie is called Johnny Got His Gun. It came out in 1971 at the height of the Vietnam War, so it hit just a little harder with audiences.

What gets me in this song is trying to imagine what it's like, unable to see, unable to hear, unable to speak, unable to move, of just being "one". I think I'd be stark raving insane within days. And that, combined with the lyrics, hits like a brick. I'm not a big Metallica fan, but this is absolutely one of their best songs and video clips.

As someone who grew up listening to Metallica, it's easy to get lost in the sick riffs and sing along to the lyrics without really paying attention to them. Seeing someone genuinely react to how heavy the subject matter is to this song kinda reawakened my love for this band. Thanks for that.

@kuplung22 I do agree. Not saying any veterans had it easy. But from what I can understand, as in I wasn't there personally, but they had it the worst. Not only the warfare, but reasonings behind them dying.
I have all types of veterans in my life. Family going back to WW1 & WW2. Korea, Vietnam, etc etc. But Aldo friends, family friends, etc. So I have alot of respect for them. Almost joined myself. I should have. I was going down a bad path when a friend of mine who was also came to me about changing our lives. We didn't & shortly after went to prison becoming felons.
We absolutely should have. Where would I be now? A hell of alot better than I am now. And I am a successful contractor now. After years of messing up, in & out the prison, drugs alcohol gangs etc etc. And after alot of work to get where I am now. And still struggle. Part of taking care of my wife & kids.
It would have been alot sooner, & more respectable had I joined. And if I died, oh well. Like gang life in prison wasn't even worse of a chance? And I made it out. And if I didn't at least my family would get so e type of help. Because this democratic liberal crap doesn't really help anyone down & out. Except to keep them there.
At least veterans are loyal to each other. A bunch is poor down & out veterans would still split the last piece of bread with me. Or help my family. Even if it wasn't much. Hey I served with your dad, or husband, wife etc. I don't have much but here's a little food to take home. Hey I throw you a few dollars to mow my lawn, or I'll give you a job till you get on your feet, etc etc. Not to mention the little bs the government throws them. Regardless better than prison. More noble also.
Those men, & some women made such an impression on me.
But yeah, my step father, who is so much more a father than my real father. A man I actually have love for. A man who never treated us as his girlfriends (my mom's) kids. Took time with each of us. Was a dad too us. Not pretending to do my mom. He went to Vietnam. And as his tattoo said 67 to 73. Until his helicopter got shot down, crashed. Crazy scar up his back, half teeth knocked out from crash.
Watching him hide in basement on the 4th. As a curious kid, spying, watching thru a little window as he crawled around on the floor with a knife, thinking he was in nam for a while. Flashbacks, etc.
While all vets have PTSD, from what I've witnessed, Vietnam Veterans seem to go thru the craziest ones. Possibly due to all the other things going on with them. The experiments, MK ultra & agent orange etc etc. Just doing things you would never imagine another human being doing to another person.
But after Nazi Germany, Russia, China etc, we realized that really works. So we coveted them. Under Paper clip & such. Gave them immunity & stole their ideas for ourselves. Except we smile & yell you we would never, as we turn you around & stick it in your ass. We lube it 1st, convince you we are the nice guy ass we wipe blood off our shafts!

The book was really good. My English teacher in hs pointed out something disturbing. If you look at the publication dates, the book was put on and taken off the shelves before and after every major American war in the 20th century cause it had such an impact on the view of war. Very very powerful

I love how just when you think they are at top speed, they find another gear and amp it up. Also their best stuff was done when they were really young so the emotional depth is crazy.

Yes this song is brutal. Yes the message is important. But I think we are all avoiding the pink elephant in the room. Kirk Hammett shredding a solo with a single coil equipt, 'Strat style', ESP guitar. NICE!

This is a perfect anti-war-song based on the book and movie Johnny Got His Gun. When I'm remembring it right, the movie was released in 1973. And this movie Metallica bought the rights and used scenes of it for their video. And I personally know this song since it was released in 1988. Yeah, I bought the CD on release-day in Germany. And this song fixed me from the first moment. And in 1989 I bought a VHS-video where this video of One was on the tape. And it shocked me the same way as you were shocked in this reaction video. And I can tell ya, nobody is prepeared for this when a person watch this for the first time. In Germany we say: it drags your feet away. And a girlfriend of mine in this time had a little brother. He was round about 13 or 14 years old and he wanted to watch this video but the parents said no. So I meant it would be good to see it together and after watching it we talk about what had happened in this video. And we had a long conversation after watching this video with many respect from the parents about this video and its message. It shows very brutal the senslesness of war and the arrogance of medical doctors and the military leaders. They don't care about the fate of Johnny, they are only care about ther own targets and interessts. And Metallica have another song about this theme. It is on the CD Master Of Puppets from 1986 and the title of this song is Disposable Hero and the story is about a young soldier in the Vietnam war. And I belive the only way to wake up people and to show them the senslesness of war are songs like One. And when the CD was released where One is on I had my 25th birthday in this year. In this times I was able to headbang and making my own show to Metal songs for about two or three hours. But after this song I had to leave the dancefloor for minutes to catch my breath and to continue.
I've forgotten one thing: the instrumental part at the end is the fight between mind (there is nothing worthful left to continue living) and instinct (doesn't matter what the mind says: I WANNA LIVE) and it is perfect.

I've been listening to this song since 1965 and I still sob my heart out to this day. I cry so hard I can barely move for hours after. I have a therapist to help me get through the intense inner pain I feel whenever I hear this song - which is obviously the greatest song ever written by anyone, ever.
Whenever I hear the number "1" I break down;mentally, physically, emotionally.
I often spend days not using my hands,feet or voice at all just to try and feel what the soldier in the video might have felt. At first my wife and kids thought that was really weird behaviour, but now they all join in too and we all weep together.
I don't even use knives, forks or spoons to eat anymore, either.
Tears are streaming down my face as I type this. 😢

This video is based on a movie and book called Johnny Got His Gun. About a man who loses his legs, arms, eyesight, hearing and ability to speak in wartime. First time I saw this video I related it to a car accident I was involved in which paralyzed me. When I first woke up after the accident I had a respirator in and couldn't talk, my bottom half of my body was numb from the paralysis so I couldn't even tell if it was there or not. I couldn't feel with my hands to see since my hands were tied down to keep me from pulling on any tubes or wires, I could hear but I was alone in the room most of the time and couldn't look around as they had my head in a fixed position so I didn't destabilize my neck any further. Even without my relationship to a similar situation this movie and book were banned in the US for many years for showing the bad side of war. They thought it might make the population to pacifist. Thank you for the reaction you do a great job on all your reactions.
This song was about a soldier hit by a mortar, causing him to lose all 4 limbs, his sight, hearing and ability to speak. His only way of communicating was to bang his head on the wall in morse code, spelling out over and over 'kill me'.
Risking life not for government or country but for an idea. As a US Marine, worth it.

The scenes in this video are from the 1970's movie, "Johnny Got His Gun" and the associated book. Johnny was a soldier in World War One. He is caught in an explosion that leaves him with no arms, no legs, no face, no ears. He cannot speak, hear, or see - has no sense of time or where he is, and is fed through a tube and breathing through a respirator.
I have always interpreted the cut scenes within the song as what is happening to Johnny in the real world. The moments of the song where Johnny is "thinking out loud" are his conscious mind, and James Hetfields voice is his subconscious mind. This was triggered - for me - by Johnny's line, "I don't know if I'm alive and dreaming, or dead and remembering?"
From that point on, the music builds and builds, which - again, to me - signaled the growing conflict between the two sides of Johnny's mind as he dips further and further into insanity. By the time Kirk Hammett's guitar solo hits, (and hits hard), I've always pictured that as the final "battle" between Johnny's conscious and subconscious mind, with the final "S.O.S. Help me..." mantra at the conclusion signifying that Johnny's mind is the same as his body, reduced to "one" singular, autonomic thought. Nothing else of him remains from that point forward. Johnny has gone, and only the breathing corpse remains until he would die of old age.
At the end, the crowd singing "Keep the Home Fires Burning" symbolizes how society went on and forgot about him, (and the veterans in general).
If you listen to this song from that perspective, you will be bawling by the end.
