    The lines :
“If I had arms, I could kill myself. If I had legs, I could run away. If I had a voice, I could be some sort of company for myself.”

@@frankiek2269 Yeah, the movie name is Johnny Got His Gun, sort of a tongue in cheek reference to the original Johnny Get Your Gun. And yes, they bought the rights to the movie so they didn’t have to pay royalties. Seeing how obscure the movie is, I’m sure the rights weren’t all that expensive. Especially since they still really weren’t very wealthy when AJFA and the video for One came out. It wasn’t until after they headlined their Damaged Justice tour, and especially after they toured for 2 1/2 years straight for the Black album, that they really got stupidly wealthy.

The Black album is okay, but totally different then the first 4 Albums. I do love Nothing else matters, Sad but true & a couple more. This is actually my favorite Metallica song of all time, from my favorite Metallica album. The video clips you're seeing were from a 1971 movie called Johnny Got His Gun. A few months ago I finally saw it for the first time after hearing about it for decades. I'm man enough to say that I cried like a baby at the end of the movie. The end result for the main character (the one in the hospital bed) is truly horrifying and hopeless. It shook me for months.

My Grandpa's younger brother, Arnold, fought in WWII and Korea. He came back from both wars in one piece. In 1978 he had a work accident where a whole bunch of stacked doors fell on top of him, which gave him brain damage and left him in a coma. He was in that state for 10 months and the doctors told our family he probably would never wake up. I was five years old. My Grandpa decided to pull the life support plug shortly after. I remember sitting on this man's lap feeding him grapes when I was four, then months later I was at the hospital in the waiting room not understanding what was going on and not understanding why I couldn't go see him.
Ten years later this song and this video came out, and it reminds me of my uncle Arnold every time I watch the video. The ...And Justice for All tour was my first time going to see Metallica live in concert. The raw power and emotion of "One" when they played it on stage, I can't really even explain it, but it was beautiful and sad all at the same time.

I will venture a guess that you are from the United States or a very patriotic country? Im sorry but its not about freedom, almost ever. Most of the time its about ressources others have. I respect the people who fight a lot even though they bought the bullshit they are being sold. "freedom" is an illusion. If you are from the united states. If you don't have money, you aren't free to do anything you want. It shouldn't be that way.

_"One"_ is a song that you will headbang to in the car or in the club, but no one actually understands it until they see the video. The background movie is _Johnny Got His Gun (1971),_ which along with _All Quiet On The Western Front (1979),_ is one of the most impactful anti-war films ever made....This song is one of the reasons why 1975-1990 is probably the best 15 years of American music.

You are correct. The movie these clips are from is called "Johnny Got His Gun" which is an anti-war film based off of the novel of the same name written by Dalton Trumbo. The story follows the injured man Joe Bonham and his experience with being trapped inside his own head with no way of communicating with the outside world. The main moral conflict being whether to keep him alive, living in his own hell or to grant him the gift of death. He eventually communicates with the doctors using the Morse Code and asks for them to kill him, but they end up ignoring his requests and forced him to remain alive... It is truly some disturbing but very powerful stuff. Highly recommend both the film and the novel

  • @Deegee_1969
    @Deegee_1969 2 года назад +14

The video, when it was first released, was a real smack in the face. The setting for the band, the choice of the video being almost all monochromatic, the jarring film clips scattered through the video, this video was truly one in a million. And still is, from when it was released back in 1989 to today. I didn't care much for the whole album to be honest, its sound was missing something (turns out it was the bass guitar that was toned down in the mix for some reason), but this track stood out.
There's another react video to this song on RUclips, and one of the reactors(?) laughed all through the video. The guy had no grasp on why there's film footage throughout the video, and couldn't understand why it's one of Metallicas greatest tracks, saying that it took ages to 'get going'. It takes all sorts, I suppose.

I still have my MOP vinyl that was signed in ‘86, a week before Cliff’s death. I treasure that vinyl to this day- I feel proud to have Cliff’s autograph, along with the other band members autograph. Cliff was a legend.

This was the first song by Metallica I heard, back in the 80's. I was into Poison, Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Cinderella, Tesla, White Lion etc etc etc. But then one day, on the Much Music Power Hour, with our host JD Roberts. The Canadian Premiere of Metallica's FIRST official video. They had never made videos up until that point. I was intrigued. So, I watched. It was heavier than what I usually listened to. But I FREAKIN' LOVED IT! The song itself, was kinda dark, damn right depressing. But the musicianship that was displayed to me? Amazing! Next day, I went to Sam The Record Man and bought all 4 of their albums. The rest as they say is history. I enjoyed your reaction, your analysis was spot on. This song hits hard to begin with. But it definitely hits "different" with the video behind it. Keep up the GREAT work and ROCK ON! 🤘🤘🤘

Before this Metallica did not make music videos. A lot of fans called them sell outs at this point. However, this song and the use of 'Johnny Got His Gun' clips made this one of the most powerful videos of all time! The video gives the song much more context.

I understand there was no way in hell for a metal band to get permission to use the movie, so they just bought all rights to the whole movie.
It was a 1970s flick, and not that much of a blockbuster, so I assume it was not *that* expensive.

Definitely a very traumatizing experience! The perception of WAR the realities of WAR the misconceptions of WAR and a Hellish nightmare that would be hard for anyone other than infantry men in WAR to know the possibilities of this actually occurring! Grabs me by the throat everytime I hear it and sends chills up my spine and breaks my heart 💔💔💔

I am a US Veteran. This is one of my most favorite videos of all time. The video made me realize how many military people have felt during any war. I was fortunate enough that I had nothing like that experience happen to me.

Powerful track, especially in the way it addresses PTSD and the physical trauma war can cause. The extended instrumental at the end undercuts some of the tension in my opinion, but it's still a great song.

Great reaction. I was 17 or 18 when this came out. I remember watching the premiere of this video on MTV. Ironically I had a friend who saw the movie then read the book Johnny Got His Gun this is based on. So I understood how they turn a song into such a powerful story. And this was Metallica's first music video. Another powerful video that tells a story is their cover of Turn The Page originally by Bob Seger. That one really caught me off guard. Thanks for doing this song.

Great reaction as usual Aileen. I actually wanted to comment on what you said about how people want you to stop talking or whatever. I know for reaction channels it can get annoying when people pause the music and talk. I know why you guys have to do it for copyright sake, but for you in particular, at least for me, I like when you pause share your thoughts and your feelings about what you're listening to. ESPECIALLY when it's more of a darker song like this or Lornas Pain Remains or Korns Daddy etc. The way you speak and the things you're feeling you can really tell come right from your heart in response to what you're feeling at the time. It's genuine, its real and I really respect and appreciate that. Play on girl🙏
