The late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton was the band's 'classical music guy'... and taught the band a lot from his music schooling. He taught James Hetfield everything about melodies and drummer Lars Ulrich about song arrangements... After his death in 1986, Metallica did not revisit the instrumental format much after 1988 (They honored Cliff Burton w/ a epic instrumental 'To live is to die' w/ a spoken word piece... but nothing else, apart from the track 'S+++ide and redemption' in 2008) Cliff Burton played a huge part in arranging 'Orion' and his bass was more prominent on the track... The strange part is that the track had a slow section that was kind of sad... like they were drifting away in outer space and it was almost as if Burton was saying goodbye because he had an inkling that he would not be around much longer... He was killed in 1986 at age 24 in a tour bus accident just after the release of Metallica's 3rd album 'Master of Puppets'. Cliff Burton's sister Connie recalled them growing up together and Cliff would do the oddest thing - every morning, he would wake up and put on Bill Graham Ministries and would often repeat the Biblical line of "the Kingdom of salvation"... When she asked him what that was about, he told her he found the sermons intriguing (even though he was apparently not a church-goer or religious) ... Connie got into drugs and her brother's death made her addictions even worse... Thankfully, Connie was able to recover and live to this day.
This song didn’t need vocals to portray the emotion throughout it. It was played at Cliff Burton’s funeral because this was one of the last songs he helped write before he passed away😔 RIP Cliff
Master of Puppets is an absolutely flawless album. There’s not a single note that I’d change. There’ll never be anything like it again and it’s staggering that it was made by a bunch of guys that were between 21 and 23 years old. The maturity of the songwriting is far beyond the years of the band members. Pretty sure I’m going to stipulate that Orion is played a my funeral. It encapsulates everything that I love about heavy metal.
There is an acoustic version of Orion done by a group called Rodrigo y. Gabriella. It's just the two of them with acoustic guitars and the sounds that they are able to make are just amazing. They did this song such Justice that they've been invited to play with members of Metallica
There was a great interview with Ray Burton, and he talks a little about this track. Jan & Ray always showed their support of Cliff, but made a joke that all his music left them nothing to waltz to. Cliff took his appreciation and classical training to devise this magical piece of music history. This where you finally got to hear Cliff really shine. It's a joyous ride through the Cosmos. Next to "To Live Is To Die", this is my favorite instrumental.

They played this song last Friday here in Mexico City, it was awesome, after 6 previous Metallica concerts, finally I had the experience to hear Orion live, so blessed
One of the best songs off the Master of Puppets album. Master of Puppets is Metallica’s best album in my opinion. Cliff was an absolute musical genius.
They absolutely nailed the two part guitar harmony that comes in over Cliffs' bass in the middle part! Most people think the guitar parts are multiple guitars that are layered on top of each other in that section, but if you listen to the isolated guitar tracks you can tell it's actually made up of only two guitars, one that's playing a higher version of the same melody and that perfectly harmonise together on the string bends - James and Kirk's on top of the bass line.
One of Metallica's most brilliant pieces, remember back in 86 when i first really got into this album...RIP Cliff, they played this at his funeral, one of many of Cliff's iconic bass compositions.
Oh hell yeah, I love a great instrumental track. It creates such vivid images and emotions in such a beautiful and engaging way. Thank you for bringing this to my attention! Loved your review!
Metallica has a few other instrumentals in addition to Orion, all of which are excellent. Call of Ktulu - Ride the Lightning album Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) - Killem All album To Live Is To Die - Justice for All album Suicide & Redemption - Death Magnetic album
This was Cliff's masterpiece. But they had another classic instrumental called "Call of Kathulu" (well, two if you count "To Live is to Die" which had a narration at the end of it where James reads a short poem that Cliff had written as a final goodbye after his passing).
RIP Cliff Burton, this is his masterpiece. Too bad there is no footage of them playing this live with Cliff. The Call of Ktulu is another masterpiece, either the original version or the one played with the SF Symphony are a must listen.
I got to visit Washington DC as one of the first classes aloud after 9/11. This song is one of my absolute favorites that I comfonted myself on a bus, Linkin Park was one of my only other cohesive things I can put together mentally. Perfect song.
This song is a masterpiece, the whole album as well. Cliff was genius bassist and a great addition to Metallica, he brought melodies and good songwriting. I miss you Cliff. ❤️
About 9:20 or so is Cliff's solo on bass. Orion is a masterpiece and that's largely due to Cliff's composition skills. RIP Cliff. Aileen, you don't need me to tell you that you're beautiful but seeing you immerse yourself and enjoy this amazing piece of art is truly one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen ❤
Thanks gorgeous🥰 ORION, IMO, is one of Metallica's best recordings written by Cliff. It underscores his talent, versatility and understanding of metal penmanship. Many write it off as repetitive and mundane. Those listeners bore easily and have no patience. This track builds, then switches it up unexpectedly. It's on my "trapped on a desert island" playlist, my all day, every day playlist, road trip playlist, rainy day playlist and my "I'm in a mood" playlist. No wrong time for ORION! 🤘 RIP Cliff
My absolute favorite song. Played guitar for 27 years and this is a gem I typically break out during special moments or simply when I feel the urge. The classical influences by Burton shines through. You feel like you float in space, watching all the phenomenon happen in the distance, as the cosmos fill your every cell with its majesty.
This and The Call of Ktulu are two of Cliff's masterpieces without vocals. After he passed away, they put To Live is To Die on the And Justice For All album which was a dedication to him. It's vocal-less like the other 2, but it's a journey as much as the other 2 because you feel James, Lars, and Kirk's pain in the music. A lot of the riffs in To Live is To Die were even written by Cliff so he has major writing credits in it, despite having already passed before the album was even made. Highly recommend The Call of Ktulu and To Live is To Die
Master of Puppets is my favorite Metallica album! I bought it on cassette tape when it came out which was awesome because I had a car stereo and a walkman that both played tapes. My favorite part of it was that both the title track (A side) and Orion (B side) were identical in length and perfectly opposite of each other so I could listen to them back to back. It became an obsession for me! 😂 😎🤘

Just watching you enjoy the melodic interlude, and your beautiful joy expressions made me feel the same joy and love I have for this song and the whole band. ❤
35 years ago, my older sister gave me a cassette for Christmas. It was this album. I was 7, and this became my favorite album played until the tape literally wore out. This quickly became my favorite track off the entire album. The tape, though broken, still resides in my safe, along with the tag that accompanied it. With the script that said take care of this, you'll need it later. She was 💯 and it became my reason to learn bass at 11. I can't understate how important this song and album was to me over the years. As a side note on the writing for this bass line, the interlude was very much based on Greensleeves and tudor music in general. The guitar coming in is very blues/jazz inspired, elevating the entire feel from somewhat somber to laid back and relaxed. They made this song to take you on a trip. They succeeded. Sorry for the length of the post.
A true masterpiece in every sense. Each song on the album transports both the mind and emotions to its own unique world. This is not only one of the best heavy metal albums of the 80's, but also one of the greatest of all time.
You ask for recommendations. Do you love Jameo's vocals and have you heard his belts? Watch the live version of My Friend of Misery (Rock am Ring 2012) and inside you will find the surprise he prepared for his fans. Magic, chills, tears for some. The story is that Hetfield made it up while performing the song (not at this show) and forgot to tell the rest of the band about it. Lars said he continued the rhythm on the cymbals and Robert played the same and they waited to see what would happen next. And a miracle happened...
Such a nice tone in that guitar? No that's Cliff on Bass! Same as the first instrument you hear in the song is Bass with a distortion pedal. Cliff was a genius!
That was Metallica in Cliff Burton years. He changed them & taught them how to play & improve, the band is not the same since his death--he was a big influence in their prime years (albums Ride the Lightning & Master of Puppets were the best). You absolutely have to watch one of amazing bass solos live, or his bass intro in For whom the bell tolls (live Oakland 1985). Have a nice day. Start by this one: ruclips.net/video/SA0dsv-ClTw/видео.html and for the solo: ruclips.net/video/lRArbRr-61E/видео.html and right no lyrics, they used to do one instrumental on each of their albums in their early years, until Cliff's death, they renewed with the tradition on the album death magnetic in 2008. And that was cool. Call of Ktulu from Ride the lightning is a close 2nd, or even better than Orion.

A lot of the times you said "woah nice guitar" it was actually Cliff's bass. His bass solo in this song is legendary
With some of those parts running through a Big Muff and/or wah.

You are a beautiful soul Aileen.
A true masterpiece in every sense. Each song on the album transports both the mind and emotions to its own unique world. This is not only one of the best heavy metal albums of the 80's, but also one of the greatest of all time.
Great reaction Aileen love that smile all the through this reaction 🤘
It's invigorating and yet soothing 🎸🎶🎶🎶🎸💕😊
shivers and tears..all the way through, every time. RIP Cliff :(
I was obssesed with Orion when i was a wee little kid. It was the soundtrack when i played with like he-man and GI Joes lol
My favourite Metallica song, I could listen to this looped all day long on certain days!
Every album before The Black Album is iconic Metallica and definitely worth listening to 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻💯 My favorite album still is Ride the Lightning
Metallica's Orion is fucking beautiful. If you don't love this track there's something wrong with you
Metallica 🖤 🤘
The magic of cliff Burton is uncomparable
Creeping death Moscow live is a MUST
Such a nice tone in that guitar? No that's Cliff on Bass! Same as the first instrument you hear in the song is Bass with a distortion pedal. Cliff was a genius!
BTW, just so you know, the first couple of solos you hear throughout the riffs are not guitar. That was bass.
You can listen to any instrumental from this band… it’s not thrash/heavy metal, it’s something else!
Try (anaesthesia) - Pulling teeth by Metallica. It’s basically a song length bass solo. It’s off their first album Kill ‘em All.
Your facial expressions says it all. Especially your eyes and eyebrows. You Totally Get It! Rock On 🤘
