The late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton was the band's 'classical music guy'... and taught the band a lot from his music schooling. He taught James Hetfield everything about melodies and drummer Lars Ulrich about song arrangements... After his death in 1986, Metallica did not revisit the instrumental format much after 1988 (They honored Cliff Burton w/ a epic instrumental 'To live is to die' w/ a spoken word piece... but nothing else, apart from the track 'S+++ide and redemption' in 2008) Cliff Burton played a huge part in arranging 'Orion' and his bass was more prominent on the track... The strange part is that the track had a slow section that was kind of sad... like they were drifting away in outer space and it was almost as if Burton was saying goodbye because he had an inkling that he would not be around much longer... He was killed in 1986 at age 24 in a tour bus accident just after the release of Metallica's 3rd album 'Master of Puppets'. Cliff Burton's sister Connie recalled them growing up together and Cliff would do the oddest thing - every morning, he would wake up and put on Bill Graham Ministries and would often repeat the Biblical line of "the Kingdom of salvation"... When she asked him what that was about, he told her he found the sermons intriguing (even though he was apparently not a church-goer or religious) ... Connie got into drugs and her brother's death made her addictions even worse... Thankfully, Connie was able to recover and live to this day.
Been a bassist for 20 plus years, Cliff was who inspired me to learn, RIP Cliff

One of the best albums of all time, meant to be listened to in its entirety. It's almost criminal to listen to Orion without listening to damage inc right after.
Then I am a criminal. I open my MOP album sequence with Damage Inc, followed by : Disposable Heroes, Master Of Puppets, Battery, Leper Messiah, Orion, The Thing That Should Not Be, and finishing with Sanitarium. Unless an album is a formal concept album (and not just thematically conceptual, but chapters-of-a-story conceptual), I rarely ever listen to songs in their original album sequence. I guess the concept album thing really made an impression on me, and ever since, I have been organizing songs according to subject, musical tempo, etc. Purists hate me, but I don't care, lol. For what it's worth, I almost considered closing the MOP album with Orion. That would have allowed my custom sequence to accommodate your preference for Damage Inc following Orion... as long as the playlist is on "Repeat All", lol. I may go back and do that, just to try it out.
Master of Puppets is an absolutely flawless album. There’s not a single note that I’d change. There’ll never be anything like it again and it’s staggering that it was made by a bunch of guys that were between 21 and 23 years old. The maturity of the songwriting is far beyond the years of the band members. Pretty sure I’m going to stipulate that Orion is played a my funeral. It encapsulates everything that I love about heavy metal.
Cliff's voice ringing through one list time. Plus their were writing the song while touring when he died. So one last Cliff song, it's like a little goodbye from him.
Metallica's older instrumentals like: The Call Of Ktulu, Orion, and To Live Is To Die (which has a stanza towards the end) are so easy to get lost in, especially The Call Of Ktulu and Orion. Cliff Burton is a Legend

@oscardiggs246 Jason was more than that. He's been a composer as well. If you check his solos in the early days. As for the live performances, yes, the very best. He played with more accuracy and speed than the other two.
You have to consider that these guys were in their early 20's when they produced this masterpiece. The musicianship on display is astonishing, much of it from Cliff Burton, but as a unit they were unstoppable at this stage. The whole album is amazing, you need to do more from it!
There was a great interview with Ray Burton, and he talks a little about this track. Jan & Ray always showed their support of Cliff, but made a joke that all his music left them nothing to waltz to. Orion is a trip... If you just lay back, close your eyes and listen to this, you will be whisked away onto the trip. You never know what is waiting at the end, but it is always a new experience. It is amazing what true skill and mastery of the instruments can create... And no lyrics are needed. The music is talking to your soul already.
They played this song last Friday here in Mexico City, it was awesome, after 6 previous Metallica concerts, finally I had the experience to hear Orion live, so blessed
I used to listen to this song and Welcome Home (Sanitarium) right before climbing on the back of a bull. Those two songs would get me so pumped but centered so that I could "dance" with the agression of the bull.
I love looking and seeing the love for music in your eyes. I wonder if you noticed (although it's difficult) that the bass solo at 9 minutes and 10 seconds of your film is played on the bass? This is a masterpiece of the tragically deceased Cliff Burton and the band always dedicates this song to him. He also recommends live versions - they are great, especially the one from Turin
Back when MOP came out, I was a senior in H.S. I learned the whole album on guitar and Orion has been my favorite Metallica song ever since. I still love to jam this tune with friends. This, to me, is Metallica's masterpiece. They are modern masters on the level of the classical greats. Orion, above all, displays their virtuosity to the point that there is no question.
My absolute favorite song. Played guitar for 27 years and this is a gem I typically break out during special moments or simply when I feel the urge. The classical influences by Burton shines through. You feel like you float in space, watching all the phenomenon happen in the distance, as the cosmos fill your every cell with its majesty.
Cliff was the driving force behind Metallica , his bass playing was sooooo influential on Metallica and Thrash. This song also shows me how good of musicians they are.
knowing this is one of the last arrangements and songs Cliff worked on, still chokes me up hearing. He was a one of a kind musician that will long be loved and missed. A real revolutionary bassist and songwriter.
i see metallica playing this in costa rica, and man was so fk insane, the people ask for this song in the meet and great and they play it, was epic, the bass of robert please, and lars on the drums, that day was rainig but this song calm all the storm, wathever, was epic
Aileen, you are a Bassist and I watched you react to Les Claypool do his thing....Cliff Burton was also a next level Bassist, the Song, "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)" is one of his best Solo`s ever! It was Mind Bending seeing Him do it Live....Hell, I was leaning right up against the Stage directly in front of him laying down his Wizardry! He, actually gave me half of the Hieneken that He brought on Stage!
One of my favorite Metallica songs. It's a great showcase to their musical talent, no vocals just great music. And the mix of James, Cliff and Kirk sharing the spotlight with their solos is epic. Cliff is a once in a lifetime bassist, there will never be another like him. Such a terrible loss to the music world.
35 years ago, my older sister gave me a cassette for Christmas. It was this album. I was 7, and this became my favorite album played until the tape literally wore out. This quickly became my favorite track off the entire album. The tape, though broken, still resides in my safe, along with the tag that accompanied it. With the script that said take care of this, you'll need it later. She was 💯 and it became my reason to learn bass at 11. I can't understate how important this song and album was to me over the years. As a side note on the writing for this bass line, the interlude was very much based on Greensleeves and tudor music in general. The guitar coming in is very blues/jazz inspired, elevating the entire feel from somewhat somber to laid back and relaxed. They made this song to take you on a trip. They succeeded. Sorry for the length of the post.
Hey aileen, excellent choice today. Cliff Burton was one hell of a bass player also well schooled in music he really helped the rest of the members of Metallica when it came to writing music. You can notice the band took a different direction when it came to the and justice for all album after cliff was no longer with us. Check out anesthesia/pulling teeth. Cliff Burton's bass solo, it was on the original kill em All album. Also you'll notice a lot of Dave mustaine's influence on that album because he was once the lead guitarist of Metallica way back in the day. Hope you check it out, it's also another instrumental but it's excellent and it's really rockin. Hope to see it on here.
Oh hell yeah, I love a great instrumental track. It creates such vivid images and emotions in such a beautiful and engaging way. Thank you for bringing this to my attention! Loved your review!
They absolutely nailed the two part guitar harmony that comes in over Cliffs' bass in the middle part! Most people think the guitar parts are multiple guitars that are layered on top of each other in that section, but if you listen to the isolated guitar tracks you can tell it's actually made up of only two guitars, one that's playing a higher version of the same melody and that perfectly harmonise together on the string bends - James and Kirk's on top of the bass line.
Just watching you enjoy the melodic interlude, and your beautiful joy expressions made me feel the same joy and love I have for this song and the whole band. ❤
Great reaction Aileen!! Any bassist worth their weight NEEDS to hear this song! It's a masterclass of what that instrument 'can' sound like!! Cliff Burton (RIP) was such a melodic player, treating his bass like a guitar, including the effects, etc. I honestly couldn't believe some of the sounds I was hearing were coming from a bass! Some songs are so 'lyrical' with their music, they don't need actual lyrics!! This is one such example. Cheers!
This song makes me think of a moment in my life from 10 years ago. I went through a 32 hour neurosurgery , I found later that died in the Operating Room. The thing is I was in a transient state ! I spoke with friends of mine who had passed away years before my surgery. I told them I would be join them shortly. Spoke with them for what felt like hours. Next thing I remember are my eyes suddenly opening and I still remember hearing every yelling my name, “ thank god we got Chris back “ , “ I can’t believe we got him back “! It plays over and over in my head !
RIP Cliff Burton, this is his masterpiece. Too bad there is no footage of them playing this live with Cliff. The Call of Ktulu is another masterpiece, either the original version or the one played with the SF Symphony are a must listen.
I never listened to Metallica when I was younger but I did grow up with them, as my older brother would play them all the time at level 10😂. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great content.
There's an old trick question (more like a joke) when asking if they're a Metallica fan, "So, you a Metallica fan?" - "Yeah." - "You know the song Orion?" - "Oh yeah, I know all the lyrics!" - " 😑 " Simply put, Orion is a pure audio, instrumental journey. And as many fans say, it's one of Cliff Burton's greatest works. (And if you haven't already, do give Disposable Heroes a listen, from that same album. One of my all-time favorites)
This is Ciffs Dads favorite Metallica song. Cause of his work on this song. Metallica is tied for my Favorite Band of all time. I've seen them 34 times
This is such a unique song not only because it's instrumental but also because of the waltz thrown in by Cliff Burton to honor his father. It's really cool. However, my favorite instrumental is "Call of Ktulu" and Ride the Lightning is definitely my favorite early Metallica album, just for the HP Lovecraft references throughout.
Orion has no beginning, and no end. It is eternal, and the 9 minutes we hear is simply the tiny segment we mortals are blessed with.

It is amazing what true skill and mastery of the instruments can create... And no lyrics are needed. The music is talking to your soul already.
After all these years... hearing it so many times... still takes me there 🔥🤘🏽🔥
They played this song last Friday here in Mexico City, it was awesome, after 6 previous Metallica concerts, finally I had the experience to hear Orion live, so blessed
The bass riff at 6:35 is probably the best part of the song imo
Back when MOP came out, I was a senior in H.S. I learned the whole album on guitar and Orion has been my favorite Metallica song ever since. I still love to jam this tune with friends. This, to me, is Metallica's masterpiece. They are modern masters on the level of the classical greats. Orion, above all, displays their virtuosity to the point that there is no question.
One of my fav Metallica songs. It's so powerful.
When you say 'such a nice tone' that's Cliff, starting one of his signature, incomprable bass solos. The man was a genius talent with his instrument.
Nice reviews! Love how much you appreciate and “get” these songs.
I love seeing people's reaction to this beautiful piece. Like watching a small child seeing Christmas Morning after it snows for the first time.
knowing this is one of the last arrangements and songs Cliff worked on, still chokes me up hearing.
Yes girl you were mad grinning the entire time and it was gorgeous. Don’t stop!
One of Cliff's (RIP) finest! I first heard this only a couple of years after it came out and has been my favorite Metallica song since.
My favorite Metallica song, ya know, along with all the others I love. The layered guitars is ... *chef's kiss*
It's hard to believe you've never heard Orion! Amazing song.
I just saw them play this live about a month ago. Absolutely loved it. Call Of Ktulu is another great Cliff Burton penned, instrumental.
Geezer started me on the bass Cliff Burton opened my eyes!
I never listened to Metallica when I was younger but I did grow up with them, as my older brother would play them all the time at level 10😂. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great content.
Such an uplifting track. I love playing this one.
Fellow bassist here! This was the first song I attempted to learn and it is beautiful! 🤘🏾
When we were young there was only music. As an old drummer I say keep playing stay open you never know
Bass Player and the reason is this song right here. This and Anesthesia - Pulling Teeth are the exact reasons why.
9:13 - that's what I call the "devil's trill". When I first heard this instrumental, I didn't realise it was Cliff playing it.
EAR CANDY!!!! My favorite Metallica song amd Cliff Burton's masterpiece. RIP Cliff. ❤🤍💙
This song really is something to hear live! It’s beyond amazing
There's an old trick question (more like a joke) when asking if they're a Metallica fan,
"So, you a Metallica fan?" - "Yeah." - "You know the song Orion?" - "Oh yeah, I know all the lyrics!" - " 😑 "
Simply put, Orion is a pure audio, instrumental journey.
Thank you for reviewing this one! This was a masterpiece of musical history and the summit of this bands career. Forever Cliff, beautiful review!
