Orion is one of my favoritest songs ever. Songs that transcend even all my favorite songs transcending rhyme or reason. That they played this at the first of their Arlington, Texas shows (August 18, 2023) and had me nearly crying with joy because I never thought I'd get to hear it live. But I did...
Kirk played Greeny that night for several songs, including this one.

During the Cliff Burton days of Metallica, bass was a lot more prominent. Orion, Call of Ktulu, Four Horsemen, Master of Puppets, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and the giant bass and drum only instrumental of Anesthesia. Cliff was the initial push that made me transition from guitar to bass.

I love hearing live over studio because I love the nuance of live shows, and the differences from the studio version. I don’t want to hear an exact recreation of the studio recording. I went to a Queensryche concert for Operation Mindcrime and they played the album start to finish, with no deviation whatsoever from the recording. While it was cool, it was also kinda boring.
With that said, for the last 20 years or so, Kirk has just…murdered his own solos live. He fucks them up constantly, goes off into the wrong key for a moment, forgets parts and overall just butchers them. I’m all for improvisation of some of the solo to keep things fresh but that’s not what this is. Don’t get me wrong, I love Kirk, it was James and Kirk that inspired me to learn guitar way back when I was just 12. That saved my life through high school because I had an emotional outlet, so I essentially owe my life to them and Metallica.
However, objectively, he does a terrible job on his own solos live. It didn’t used to be this way, back on the Justice tour and the Black album tour, he was much more precise even when throwing in improvisational lines. Ever since the St. Anger era on though, he’s become progressively worse at his own solos, especially those from the older albums. Meanwhile, James is pretty much still the beast he’s always been. Maybe slowed down a bit from his 20s, but still a complete beast of a rhythm player. Yes, Kirk has written songs and solos i only wish I had the talent to write, and he is a better guitarist than I’ll ever be or ever was. That still doesn’t change the fact that he’s become really sloppy live, right alongside Lars.
I met them in 2009 and they were all the nicest guys, especially Lars, which people can’t seem to believe. Besides Rob, who was still new then, Lars was the friendliest and made me feel like he actually cared about what we were talking about. So believe me when I say that I love the band, always have and always will. They’re still my #1 band and that won’t change. I still feel my criticisms are valid though. I just wanted to make sure people knew I wasn’t coming from the standard “I hate Metallica now ever since the black album” angle or the “I hate Lars” angle.

3:07 The _big spotlight to the bass_ from Metallica would be *Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) ... i.e. Bass Solo, Take 1* from their first album (Kill 'Em All). Although, you have to listen to _Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)/Whiplash_ at the same time/reaction. You can't listen to one without the other. It's just the Law of Metal!
Edit: *Whiplash* has their most *Kickass* vocals of any Metallica song ever!!!
    Whiplash Lyrics:
Late at night, all systems go. You've come to see the show.
We do our best. You're the rest. You make it real, you know.
There's a feeling deep inside that drives you fuckin' mad.
A feeling of a hammerhead. You need it, oh, so bad.
    Adrenaline starts to flow.
    You're thrashing all around.
    Acting like a maniac.
    Whiplash!
Bang your head against the stage like you never did before.
Make it ring, make it bleed, make it really sore.
In a frenzied madness with your leathers and your spikes.
Heads are bobbing all around, It's hot as hell tonight.
    Adrenaline starts to flow.
    You're thrashing all around.
    Acting like a maniac.
    Whiplash!
Here on stage, the Marshall noise is piercing through your ears.
It kicks your ass, kicks your face. Exploding feeling nears.
Now's the time to let it rip, to let it fuckin' loose.
We're gathered here to maim and kill 'cause this is what we choose
    Adrenaline starts to flow.
    You're thrashing all around.
    Acting like a maniac...
    _Bridge_
    Here we go!
    *Bitchin' Guitar Solo*
    Whiplash!
The show is through, the metal's gone, it's time to hit the road.
Another town, another gig, again we will explode!
Hotel rooms and motorways, life out here is raw.
But we'll never stop, we'll never quit, 'cause *YOU'RE* Metallica!
    Adrenaline starts to flow.
    You're thrashing all around.
    Acting like a maniac.
    Whoa, whoa

What's with the tape on the fingers of Kirk Hammet. “I’ve always plucked the strings really hard and banged on the guitar very hard when I’ve strummed or played, or whatever. And over the years, there’s these little lines that are on the side of my hand, and because of the bridge, a lot of its sharp angles, and just my style… They would break open and start bleeding.

Kirk puts scotch tape around his hand to prevent excessive callousing from palm muting. At least, that's what i remember Kirk saying about it once.

I like your reactions, they pass verisimilitude.
I would like to hear you in your mother tongue. I also ask for, if you haven't already, a Q&A style video.
If you are not married or engaged, please consider putting me in the interest queue.
Kisses, take care and God bless us all

You were asking about the tape on Kirks hand? It’s because he has a very aggressive picking style, and if he doesn’t put tape on his hand he ends up cutting himself on the strings.
