    Whether you watch Moscow version or this version , or any version … this song is and as will always be FIRE!!!! The band member you asked about is the long time bass player for Metallica , Jason Newstead . He replaced Cliff Burton when Cliff tragically lost his life .. Jason played bass for Metallica for years until he he felt as tho it was getting to be a bit much for him and he wasn’t able to pursue certain other wishes in his life . So he left the band and was replaced by Rob Trujillo . Jason was a huge loss for them and he’s never been forgotten..

    The second "vocalist" is their 2nd bassist. Jason Newsted. He joined the group after their original bassist, Cliff Burton, tragically passed away in a your bus accident in Sweden. Jason was their bassist up until the St. Anger album, when Robert Trujillo joined after Jason left.
    Dark history lesson: James, Kirk and Lars were so angry and deep in grief over Cliff's death and they took it out on Jason. For over a decade Jason endured so much abuse, hazing, and constantly being told that no matter how long he was in the band, he would NEVER be a part of Metallica. It wasn't until their "Load" album that the band finally stopped the abuse of Jason and treated him like a member of the band.

    • @shryggur
      @shryggur Год назад +5

      Are you sure about a decade of hazing? I think in recent interviews both them and Jason said that it was more about the first year or two, until he proved himself on the road (I think he managed to play concerts barely conscious due to illness or something like that.) He might've remained a "junior" up until Load, in the sense that he didn't have a say in creative questions or something. I can't remember anything harsher than that, though.

    • @TroubledTurnip
      @TroubledTurnip Год назад +11

      @@shryggur The whole situation has been explained by the band in a movie, and many recent interviews on the subject. The hazing of Jason was intense and unrelenting. James even went to therapy to try to learn how not be such an asshole after all the fallout when Jason left the band. That therapy even had James and Dave Mustaine talking to each other for the first time since the 80s and James finally acknowledging all the hurt Dave harbored all these years. That's not to say James is a bad guy, he's just a very typical guy with bottled up emotions that explode in bad ways. He's faced it, and as far as I know, Jason and Dave are mostly okay with him now which is great. James really humbled himself and deserves a lot of credit imo.

    Lars is a legend.
    First of all he is a big part in the creation of all the songs. lyrics and music.
    And many of those songs are legendary.
    And back in the early days of Metallica he was actually one of a few drummers who created a new type of drumming style that many metal bands later would follow and build on.
    His story is also very interesting, coming from Denmark, going to the US as very young where he end up being apart in the creation of Metallica.

    I've been a musician most of my life and play many different instruments. I even have a gold record on the wall.. I can tell you from that experience Lars is NOT a bad drummer at all! In fact, most of the haters and wannabe musicians if I sat them down and said play this Metallica song on the drums correctly, I bet 6 out of 10 would fail! They simply don't really understand what's happening. My second thought is some people are still hanging on to that Napster nonsense in which he was correct about and they're still salty.

    • @picklesmcmillan217
      @picklesmcmillan217 Год назад +1

      No, not a bad drummer. I think his issue was that he stopped practicing for a time. A lot of money, time and notoriety can lead to complacency. We also have to remember that the 80s/early 90s were fueled by cocaine and, when it comes to drumming, it makes a difference. Lol.

    • @rodoxag9117
      @rodoxag9117 Год назад +1

      Lars is not a terrible drummer, but let's face it, he's not good either. Just listen to the fill he played at 1:57, it was awfully executed and he completely lost the tempo. Musicians make mistakes and that's fine, but it's not normal when you can find those mistakes in his playing at every gig, in every song, at any year. And during late '89 and early 90s he was at his peak, after that he got worse and worse up until recently, that he stepped up his game a little (and he started to use click tracks).
      No one should hold Lars against the unrealistic expectation of being a human metronome. But the kind of mistakes Lars make are quite bad considering that he's a professional drummer with decades of experience playing for one of the greatest bands in modern music. When the guitar player is the one keeping the tempo of the song instead of the drummer, you can assert with confidence that the drummer is not good. The good news is that, while Lars' playing is sloppy, he is 100% passion and energy, and he's a hell of a music arranger.

    As said by others..." For Whom the Bell Tolls" live is great. And remember this...
    The first time James and Lars heard/saw Cliff, they said that they heard a guy playing the bass like a guitar and when they turned to look, all they saw was red hair flying in the air.

    I also prefer this concert over the newer ones. The pureness of the energy is just crazier here. My favourite song from this concert is the master of puppets with long intro and Blackened. It's a gem too. They sang over pollution in a metal concert in the 80's. They were so deep in so many ways.

    During this tour in the early 90's bassist Jason Newsted would take over vocals on a few songs sometimes it was Creeping Death sometimes Seek & Destroy sometimes Whiplash. the concerts were 3 hours long and it was a rare opportunity for James Hetfield to rest his voice. it proved beneficial since this tour went on for nearly 3 years. I was lucky to catch their concert in Miami Florida back when I was an angry 16 year old . " my second Metallica concert I've seen on 7 different tours ."and still one of the best shows I've seen them perform.🤘

    This band is why I picked up guitar when I was 12, and why I started dabbling in bass guitar after high school before making the switch permanently. Particularly, this song. So crushing. You really want energy? Check out their live performance of Whiplash from this show. Holy hell. And as previously mentioned, the 2nd vocalist is bassist Jason Newsted. He took the spot after Cliff Burton, and my biggest bass guitar inspiration, died. Before he joined, he played in a band that occasionally covered Metallica songs, and he did the vocals on them, which ended up being a great addition for backup vocals and taking over in spots to give James a break. You should really see some oooooold clips of Metallica when Cliff was in the band. He will blow your mind.

    Jason Newsted, was the bass player for Metallica that was singing in this song for THIS concert. He was formally in a band called Flotsam and Jetsam, then Cliff Burton died, First Bass player for Metallica, and Jason was chosen after a long try out for bass player. He left the band a few years ago, maybe 10, and now they have the bass player from Suicidal Tendencies/Infectious Grooves.

      @@19samson84 You are right! Ron McGovney was the first bass player, but I would have to look at my albums to see if his name is credited with any songs on Kill Em All. And Jason leaving the band feels more like 10 years to me... but I did say, maybe, it's been 21? That makes me feel old. What would people these days do without google? I have known Metallica since I was 12 and I don't think I ever really knew Cliff wasn't the original bass player. I would definitely say that more people know that Dave Mustaine was in the band originally, rather than Ron.

    Im so glad you reviewed this one and not the moscow one. Here you can really see James and Jason being beasts they are. Jason is the bassist who has amazing, heavy and dark backing vocals. NOthing wrong with moscow but thats the one everyone see's. Also Jason replaced Cliff Burton in 1986 after Cliff's death. Jason left in 2001 and was replaced by Robert Trujilo. Jason was the backing vocals. You can hear him in almost every album song from 1988-1998. 1998 was garage inc. covers of other bands. You can also hear Jasons backing vocals in live performances from 1986-2001 and then again in 2009 and 2011 when they played together again.

    It is easy to forget that the 80s-early Metallica was really heavy and aggressive straight metal, they were great live, and the sound was raw as hell. This is the Metallica that influenced and helped define a future generation of metal.

    I've seen them live 3 or 4 times in the late 90s/early 90s (.. And Justice For All and Black Album tours) and they were HIGH ENERGY. They make a lot of mistakes live and their sound isn't quite what you'd expect sometimes, (James can barely sing and play, Kirk doesn't sound the same. and their guitar harmonies sound super bad) but it's good enough. What you don't get from the videos is just how LOUD they play. At one show I attended, everything was vibrating so much.. especially during Jason's bass solo that some of the ceiling tiles fell down. They were huge 2'x2' tiles that people started throwing like frisbees from the upper seats and knocking people out down below. Also, all the folding chairs (whose idea was it to have these?!) from the floor seats were thrown into a large pile (and also being thrown around) to make more room for the massive mosh pit. Creeping Death was always my favorite part with the most audience participation.
