A guy I work with was there too. He knows I’m a huge Metallica fan so he talks to me a lot about them and said they were his favorite band of the night by FAR. He also said even though there were more people there when it was ACDC’s turn and they all enjoyed that at well, that the energy was different when Metallica was up. He said as a Russian he had never experience anything like that before and that the crowd was the most insane when Metallica was playing so he always likes to say that concert was really 1.6 million Metallica fans who just didn’t know it yet

As part of the past annual series known as Monsters of Rock, Metallica flew over to Moscow, Russia and took part in the country’s first-ever open-air rock and metal concert.
There were 1.6 million people in attendance at this concert, and the show was free.
This concert also took place during a very intense time in Russian history; specifically, it took place one month after the 1991 Soviet coup d’état attempt failed, that failed coup leading to the dissolution of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

This was the end of the Iron Curtain era. To celebrate freedom one of the things was this concert. It was held at Tushino Airfield in Moscow. By noon, 300 000 festival attendees had entered the area. When Pantera played there were 700 000 in the audience. As the festival went on the number grew to a million. Metallica reached 1,6 million. Closing act was AC/DC. Heard different rumours (cannot confirm this) about how many people in the crowd got injuried due to violent clashes between the public, the police and even military. To oversee the event , there were 11 000 soldiers, police officers, hired security guards and riot police. Very tragic whatever the amount was.

This is from a reporter for Rolling Stone magazine: “In any case, by four or five o’clock, music wasn’t the issue. Violence was,” wrote Troitsky in an article for Rolling Stone. “I saw no less than a dozen bleeding people, a couple of policemen among them. I saw police cruelly beating up kids, with or without a reason. I saw a rain of empty glass bottles thrown at police lines from the audience. And they did a reinterpretation of the song in 2021 for the Metallica Blacklist with Alessia Cara.

Not just losing something on the ground, but losing a life as well or getting injured. And that happened there. It was absolutely insane. I was too young back then, but I envy people who attended this festival!
The crowd was going insane, because they saw these groups for the FIRST time performing at a festival in their country)) I wish i had a time machine to go back just to see this...

You havent seen Cliff Burton yet.. the late great bassist. Most of their greatest gigs are not Moscow and Seattle.. check Denmark Roskilde 86, Day on the Green 85, Metal Hammerfest Germany 85. This was the Metallica prime before they went super popular. The energy was so primal and very raw from the band

If you love crowd interaction, "Creeping Death" and "Harvester Of Sorrow" from this same show is fantastic (Creeping Death more so).
But the commenters are right.....Seattle 1989 is bad-ass. Too many cuts to recommend. Their song "Battery" (from Seattle) is, among other references, a song about the energy the band generates, sending it out to the crowd and then receiving the energy back.....and you can see and feel it from the Seattle show (even 30 years later).

This is my dad's account. he passed recently and I am closing down everything. When I got my first car, the very first song I heard was Enter Sandman. I was nicknamed "Sandman" over the years for various reasons. Anyway, this song hits home and it's beautiful witnessing people experiencing this for the first time. Your channel hit home HARD. Your emotion to these various songs is so touching and superb. You're a wonderful person and please never stop what you are doing. It helps with my healing. Rock on girl!

Also for the meaning ‘tuck you in, warm within, free from sin, until the sandman comes’ the father stayed to watch the child until they fall asleep. What ‘sin’ does a child do at night before sleep? Lead singer grew up in a very oppressively religious household and he grew up feeling judged and ostracized. Religion & family expectations show up in many songs, particularly from the Black album.

Do you remember in the early days of this channel, when you were reacting to Nightwish and you said "Show me how to be a fan?" Imagine what it must have been like to be in THIS crowd in THAT place...NONE of them had ever seen anything like this before, except perhaps on illegal tapes from the black market. Every time I see this video I'm amazed to see American flags being waved in the crowd. Can you imagine what would have happened to these people only a few short weeks or months ago simply for HAVING such a thing in their possession? Even owning recordings by the bands would have been dangerous...now they were watching them perform RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM!

This actually is not about the songs or the band. It's about the end of The Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union and over a million people who came out to celebrate their new found freedom. This was their first experience seeing these 'western' bands LIVE considering that prior to that it was illegal to listen to or own 'western' media. Music and other media in Russia was very mellow, low key, uninspiring, and had to be approved by the government.

This was one of the most important concerts in world history! It was one of the events that signaled the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union, along with Gorbachev's "glasnost" policy. It was the first time the Soviet Union allowed Western musical acts to perform live inside their borders in decades. Some people consider it one of the events that triggered the moderates in the USSR to oppose the hardliners, eventually leading to its collapse. Many of the military personnel weren't there to provide security, they were part of the crowd! Millions, both military and civilian alike, were very excited to see some live rock and metal music!
