The story behind the song is the starting of the song where there are open string (E-G-B-e pattern), James Hetfield wrote that while he was talking to his then girlfriend on the phone, he was just randomly strumming. It started from there and he composed the entire song, showed it to Lars, Lars liked it and rest is history. And yeah, James Hetfield played the solo, it's so beautiful, work of a master!!!! After all these years, I am still in love with this song. First guitar solo I learned, because of James!!!!

  • @cynicalguy

It’s funny, if you listen to interviews with James from around that time, recording this album was where he learned he knows how to sing - up until that point he didn’t believe he could actually do it properly.

Love all different genres and how each one speaks to me and how I can feel each note of certain songs. Music is truly a language within itself. It's a joy watching you respond so raw to each song, having to go back and listen to certain parts over again, picking up on tiny nuances within the music. This is what music is about. It lifts our spirits, tells a story, gets our feet tapping and dancing, makes us cry, makes us laugh, makes us smile, gives us energy, quiets our souls, captures exactly what we feel. It makes us alive! Love your love of music! Have a lot of your reactions to catch up on 😃

"never cared for what they do" "never cared for what they say"
I just take this song as being about being true to yourself and not caring if you "fit in" with the "herd". Not being afraid of being different or being yourself. Not caring as much about pretending to be what society or others want you to be. Being 1000% real.

First band in history to make $1 billion just from live concert tickets sales (ignoring all their album sales). They are full of talent and a Mega-band. If you get a chance to see them.... you must.

I do not remember where I saw the interview, but in it James, the singer, was asked about the meaning behind the song and he said this song was a tribute to his wife, a love song if you will

There is a cello version of this song here on youtube. I requested this to be played at the funeral of my sister. She was killed now 10 years ago in a motorcycle accident. The cello version (just 2 cellos, no singing) is extremely powerfull and emotional

I feel the exact same way everytime the guitar solo kicks in.. Every.. Damn.. Time..
There's a subtle orchestral composition in the background arranged by Michael Kamen, the same guy they made S&M with 🤘

lol "hard at work and he's sleeping" always loved that part and it cuts to james smiling then showing them all laughing. I think the video for this song goes so well, it's a much more personal look at who the people are while hearing the music they made.

Metallica - *Fade to Black* and you need to check out their 1989 Seattle Concert. Literally, any song is worth listening to. Best concert IMO.

Love your reactions on the music of Metallica. Grew up with them, got almost every album. Love the change int their music styles. Stil my favorite band next to AC/DC. The darkest song is fade to black.
