This song was written when they were on tour for the "...And Justice For All" album when James Hetfield was missing his girlfriend circa 1989 to 1990. This was a personal song for James and he originally didn't want it to be on The Black Album until Lars Ulrich heard it and pushed for it to be on the record. The orchestration was handled by the late conductor, Michael Kamen who also conducted the San Fransisco Symphony Orchestra for the first S&M album from 1999. And you are absolutely right Lilly, this is a love song. Can you believe that couples have actually gotten married to this song? The footage that was used for this song was taken from the documentary "A Year and a half in the life of Metallica" which showcased the making of The Black Album. The guys in the band were definitely angry during the making of that record because they kept butting heads with producer Bob Rock and James and Lars also butted heads with each other a lot too, and Kirk had to be the peace keeper which was something that happened a lot back then. Metallica ended up touring in support of The Black Album for 2 and a half years due to the unprecedented success of the album. Elton John called this song "One of the best songs ever written" when Metallica was on the Howard Stern Show a year ago which absolutely blew James Hetfield's mind.

It is a love song... James Hetfield wrote it on tour to his then-gf circa 1989 - '90(They eventually broke up after this album was done in 1991... In fact, the other 3 got divorced that same year). Composer Michael Kamen did the strings for the track w/ an orchestra... the late maestro also conducted Metallica's 1999 symphony concerts w/ an orchestra. I think the song was very personal to James, so he did the guitar solo. The video footage was from the making of the 1991 self-titled 'black' album, shown in the 1st half of the documentary "A year and half in the life of Metallica'... which captured the 1991 - 1992 studio sessions and tour (cutting off at the end of the Guns N' Roses tour that year). Metallica kept touring into 1994 before they finally took a year off. If u think the band looks mad in the video... u are correct. They spent a year in the studio and kept butting heads w/ themselves (and producer Bob Rock) over the direction of the record... Towards the end of tracking, it cost 1 million $$$ of studio time and their personal lives were in disarray, which is why they took off on the road for years on end... They didn't settle down until 1995. If u want listener-friendly Metallica, check out 'Until it sleeps'... or 'Hero of the day'... Heavier Metallica, check out - 'Blackened'... or 'No remorse'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

Kirk actually didn't play a single note in this song's studio version, so basically every rhythm and lead guitar you hear is James. Live however Kirk usually starts this song up and then James joins in and also plays the final solo.
