- In this video we show you what it looks like when aftermarket timing parts are used. This Unreal, Noe this shop has a new problem on their hands and an unhappy customer. Why even risk it?!?! @ford #automotiverepair #automotive #ford #failure #aftermarketparts #junk #fordexplorer
100k miles it shouldn't need engine work. Period.
It didn't.
@@FordTechMakuloco so the water pump and timing job was a hustle?
@@DjCBlaqYou not understanding what preventative maintenance is probably a contributing factor as to why you dont trust mechanics 😂
@@Desolation_Nation I'm glad that you pulled all that information out of my question, you should put your mind reading skills to better use. This customer could have easily been hustled by the shop that put in tht crap parts. How would anyone know if no one asks?
@@Desolation_Nation "preventative maintenance" was apparently why they replaced the timing components when they were in there for the water pump. But they made it less reliable by using aftermarket parts.
Used the cloyes kit on my 5.4 3v for guides tensioners and chains. Almost have 69k miles on it with no issues. Had to change it during Covid and Ford kits were on backorder. Still have original OEM phasers at 292k miles.
Same on mine. Still running fine
@@actualfudd3866Also added the M340HV pump. Forgot to mention that.
I did the same thing on my wife's 14' Expedition. Mellings and Cloyes chain and tensioners. Ford roller/followers and and lifters, stock cam phasers as they had no movement.
I have question, every content creator says don't use aftermarket, but my question is who's making for the o.e., guarantee ford doesn't make there own parts,
I had cloyes kit on 5.4 3V with ford phasers as well. When I took engine a part after about 4 years (I probably put about 40k miles?), I found tensioner gasket had blown out once again and guides broken. This time around I kept old cloyes chain, then replaced guides and tensioners with Ford genuine ones.
Big Water Pump problem Ford 3.5 TIVCT Engine 😢😢😢
If they had just left the timing alone when they did the water pump, it would have been fine.
That’s wild! I mean I get this isn’t a 302 or abc but cloyes was an upgrade in the olden days
A lot of old names have sold out and gone down the toilet, it's quite surprising who's bought up who in the last 10yrs.
Isnt Holley trying to do that ?
@@MrTheHillfolk Yes I think it'll wo
Yes and I think Edelbroch
has a new carburetor that will kick everyone's a**
Lots of the parts and the clothes timing components kits are just forced from different companies. Cloys doesn’t make their own parts like that anymore. I seen a video where the timing chain tensioner was from China so Mechanic decided to get the OEM tensioner.
Yeah man I always thought Cloyes was pretty good
When I did my 5.4L timing job if I got anything good out of your videos it was to use OEM parts I can tell you this it was best decision I made expedition is still tuning no issues 👍🏻
Wait... -20 to + 20 variance? that equates to 40 degrees of slop. That's fricking OUTRAGEOUS! Does that vehicle even have chain tensioners installed? Mind blown...
wait a minute, don’t they have a training video up on youtube?Thats crazy!…. You can’t trust nobody no more!
Screw this garbage, I will forever keep my V8 4.6 L
I've done 2 timing jobs using melling parts and no issues. Many of the parts are from same molds because you can do a side by side and the ford/Motorcraft logo is grinded off.
Cloyes kit in sons 5.4 3v with melling high volume oil pump and Ford phasers. 4 years and 75,000km not a single problem.
good to hear! same setup but phazers locked out
I usually get OEM or Melling timing kits, because they're USA made and aren't junk.
SMelling is actually making decent things again?
No, they are not.
@@MrTheHillfolk There are two lines of Melling parts, the Service Grade and Professional Grade. The Service Grade stuff is chinesium crap. Only use the Professional Grade.
@@JimBronsonHow does anyone know the difference? I have the melling H340V oil pump installed rn
Hmm I have always used cloyes. No problems here. Used it on my ecoboost and 460 v8
Planning on doing the pump and chains on my 3.7 soon, thanks for the heads up! Motorcraft only in your opinion?
Absolutely. The extra cost is totally worth it by not having to replace a shitty part.
I come from the land of VW, we never mess around and put junk in a vr6. Same with the newer ones ,use or/oem parts only or you'll be back in there again.
Now,there is actually good aftermarket stuff, like an aftermarket cast aluminum water pump to replace the original plastic one on later model vws ,and it's cheaper than walking in a dealer.
Cast aluminum water outlets and stainless pipes to replace other original plastic ones, that's good aftermarket stuff.
This newer stuff is getting too specialized for typical crappy tolerance parts.
Freaking Ford always stopped making good stuff
Possibly the Cloyes kit for the 3.5’s are garbage idk.
I’ve installed at least 80+ Cloyes timing kits in the 5.4 3v and never had one come back. Mind you I use OEM phasers and the Cloyes timing kit that comes without phasers. Ultimately with the 5.4 it’s more down to installing the Melling M360hv high volume oil pump, cuz if they ain’t getting good oil flow to them, it don’t much matter which phasers you use/starve. Lol
I have seen accelerated wear on the plastic guides, and I hate the chain design they use with the rough back and on top of that in the last two years there have been way too many chains breaking stories using their kits, no thanks.
@@FordTechMakuloco I’m not trying to argue with the Ford engine GOAT. I respect your opinion and learned much of what I’ve now made into a business from watching your videos is what got me started specializing in the Ford modular engine repair.
I’m just saying that in my case, I’ve had good luck with them… so far...
I’m just a guy who does the work, ultimately I install what the customer wants to pay for. Lol
I followed you instructions and went with a Melling timing set for my 1999 Mountaineer 4.0 SOHC and am glad I did. I read some reviews on the cloyes and many people were having issues at about 10K miles. So far with over 20K on the Melling set no issues at all. Thank you so much.
That is frightening, what's worse shops and dealers are turning to 30 day warranties, leaving people who paid a couple thousand screwed.
I prefer the melling timing components
Thanks Brian! I unfortunately already know... Installed a Cloyes Kit from CARiD. At the same time I installed a M340HP Melling oil pump and followed your instruction to the T installing it without removing the pan Yea PITA. I had a noise within 6 months and CARiD sent a return tag. They would warrantee it out but nor refund me. Whatever I said ill just sell the new kit when I get it I said to myself. I purchased a ford racing kit which included bolts pins most everything needed and continued to remove everything to inspect what happened. A tensioner came apart and scattered plastic debris throughout the engine. I had the drop the oil pan, dug out all the plastic debris from the old suction screen and pan. I took about 5 pictures of the process and the internals of the engine itself because inside its a clean as the day of assembly. Reassembled with the Ford kit and shipped everything including all the extra parts i used from the ford kit NOT provided with the Cloyes kit back to CARiD. I was contacted a week or so later and was told that my claim was denied. I was told I didn't return everything. Unreal. Wasted over 500.00. got nowhere with them.
As said perhaps some of the parts are OEM like in a Cloyes kit. One place says made in the USA another place says made in china Never needed many timing kits but in the 3 times I did, they were Cloyes. Never again!
Used CARiD 6 times 5 of the purchases were great and saved a few dollars. This one burns. CARiD again No. More and more I just say OEM. OEM demands a higher standard. Meets or exceeds OEM specifications mostly means it will fit. It does not speak to quality at all in my experience.
Ford 3.5s* are the worst
260k here 3.5 still going well
Did a timing job on a 2007 explorer awd one of the chains only lasted about 2 trips to work so roughly 120 miles so now I’m pulling the engine out again CLOYES 👎🏻
Hey, Brian. Would you be open to a phone consultation regarding my 5.4 3 valve? Of course, I would compensate you for your time and expertise.
Last time I looked, they had several different kits, all different quality levels. Which one was this? Thanks and take care.
I read somewhere that cloyes made the ford chains in the 5.4 2v motors !
Morse
I installed cloyes in my 2012 3.5 and lasted about 10k miles. Complete junk
I've heard even fomoco parts may be bogus. What do you think?
I'm trying to find the part numbers needed for a 2013 Explorer. I almost bought a Cloyes kit too!!
Cloyes??? are you sure it wasn't made by Playskool?
Out of round/ poor specs- etc.. / Junk. Thx .FTM.
Ive used aftermarket timing belt kits on junkers, but never on anything else.
Watched from Yosemite Kentucky. By the OEM parts.
I can agree did this exact job woth cloyes kit ran horrible replaced oe ford never missed a lick
You sold me Brian. Nothing but OEM on mine
What brand do you recommend other than Motorcraft junk?
How do you know the installer didn't time the engine correctly?
Did you see it sitting at 0 at idle? That tells me the engine is timed right.
@@FordTechMakulocoI've seen the same issue on a 5.4 with loose chains
@FordTechMakuloco I have a question on the live data what option did you select to analyze the timing ranges
What about melling kits for a 5.4 2v?
Been running Cloyes products in our race car for over twenty years.... never had a problem
OMG LOL!
Well hey, they got 1 out of 4 right. Could be worse
I belive when i replaced water pump the timing chain jumped because of slack on chain. Now the camshafts don't line up. Now im taking to Ford next week. Does anyone know what im looking at? Can the cams be realigned? Am i screwed? Any help please
I just installed cloyes timing kit in my 08 Edge with the 3.5L. I did find a motorcraft waterpump online that was a great price compared with the dealer. Maybe I've gotten lucky so far, but the engine is running smooth with no issues after repair. The motorcraft phasers are sooo expensive.
Agreed but here is the kicker the phasers never need changing on transversely mounted engines.
How long did the original phasers last you ?
@@FordTechMakuloco Odd, is there a reason for that? I service a fleet of 13+ Explorers and ya, we never do phasers. Water pumps, that's another story :/
الفيديو ليس واضح😢
Glad 2019 was the last year
The tensioner are no flexible like the motorcraft.the consequences of try to save some money(dealer always have back order or not in the store).
Brian, I really am not doubting there is a problem. I grew up in Missouri …..So show me why a chain will have 20+ degrees of variance. And you have painted with a pretty broad brush. Please show us the failure. I am more than curious. And you did open door so to speak.
It is not the chain, never said anything about the chain being the failure.
Then what’s the failure?
Phasers or VCT solenoids. Unfortunately, they replaced them with aftermarket junk too even though the Ford OE ones never fail on transversely mounted engines. Essentially, they dug their own grave.
Years ago there were two timing chain manufacturers, Morse and Link belt. Both were quality. OE's used both.
😅I have a 3.5 in my Ford Edge I switched out the water pump and timing chain last year with OEM, out of preventive maintenance. At the current time I'm using 5W20 would you recommend I upgrade to 5W30? Right now I'm using Mobil 1, about every 5,000 miles. I'm curious what your recommendation would be.. I have a 120,000
My '82 351 Police car had an OEM Cloyes roller chain in it. This sounds like a case of off-suring gone bad for Cloyes?
Dealer parts suck as well. There are few options for quality parts these days. Cloyes used to be top of the line. Maybe they sold out to some crappy company or perhaps the last shop bought a low grade kit.
It does make a difference using aftermarket parts and you'll wish you didn't.
I use them on my 2 valves all the time and never had an issue……now their VVT kits I’ll take your word on that.
Ugh…. I thought cloyes did good stuff. 😢
I hear you man I've got boxes of them from 20 or 30 years ago in stock🧐
When I needed a Motorcraft kit for my 3.5 they were all on backorder.
Holy crapmolion
Bought one for my 3.5l, had to replace it 100 miles after i installed it
Have installed dozens with no issues.
I used oem phasers but used cloyes chains and tensioners. Do you think that would create a problem?
On my 5.4 3v, it did create a problem. Tensioner gasket blew out just like the original Ford one and chain guides broke. I didn't have chain rattle yet. Found broken guides when I pulled timing cover off to do other repairs.
The idea of needing a water pump at only 100k miles. Ive driven Ford and Nissan vehicles for work in my business and when i was an employee 250-500k miles each vehicle before retiring them and never replaced a water pump or timing components. Why are new vehicles so crappy?
we need you to spend money and buy more. Super reliable business is making money.
I had to get a new engine at 33k miles and then a new starter at 90k.
Depends on the brand and model just like always
Guess you aren’t very old. From about 1960 when I started driving, water pumps lasted 30k to 70k miles.
@@georgeburns7251you buy too many Fords , your used to getting hosed
Thanks 🙏
😮😲😮 Wowzers
😮😲😮 Wow
Just drive it.. You can fix it right on the next timing change.. Go OEM
You go on ahead, and have fun replacing the engine when it lets go. Also, enjoy the wholly awful driving experience with that mess, and probably some gas wasting to boot.
I'm going to fix that myself, but you do you.
@@mikeybhoutex I have a 2002 F350 7.3L diesel, ZF 6spd manual, 4x4... Over 340k miles and still a great truck in good shape. I'm just gonna keep driving it. lol... 7.3L SuperDuty never dies
Whats the best nextbto owm patrts?
You are simply 'sticking your neck out' on any but OEM when it comes to timing, and a whole lot of other things such as sensors too. Overall, OEM is best for stock applications. Anything else is a 'well.. hope that's ok' and send it kind of thing, see if it has to come back out or not, and good luck.
What are the best timing kits ?
OEM typically. If OEM's not available then you may be a guinea pig, and/or you really gotta separate the wheat from the chuff on reviews of aftermarket kits, then hope.
But if Brian says it's no good, then you might want to at least hear him out on that. Not the first time I've heard Cloyes ain't it, and not just him either. When I was doing my 4.6 3v timing, I did the searching and wound up going back to Ford kits, just the updated ones to hopefully prevent the issues that caused me to do the timing in the first place.
Cloyes work awesome
What brand is a good one
Oem ford parts.
@@troylogan3653 if your car is older, forget OEM. I needed a timing chain for 15 year old Ford 3.5 in a Taurus. Ford dealer told me they don’t have any for them …. But then, who but me would be driving a 15 year old Ford. In 2008 I was thinking about getting a Toyota but the ford was 2k cheaper. Ha ha, jokes on me now.
I put a cloyes kit in my car at 120k miles but I used a motorcraft chain tensioner. I also used a motorcraft water pump. 150k miles now and tuned. No issues. There so many things that could cause this to happen and 90% are result of installation mistakes.
Can Ford ever get it right… To be continued smh
Not a Ford issue. Maybe watch the video..
@@Shiver2002 I don’t need to I’ve owned a Ford with the 5.4 triton and all of the cam phaser BS that came with it I would never own another Ford again
