  • Today's video is on a 2014 GMC Sierra that had a No Crank concern and a vehicle code scan found that nothing on the High Speed Powertrain CAN Bus was communicating. As usual I'm bringing you all along with me to find and fix this vehicle no parts required.

I watch every video but have learned the most about canbuss communication issues. Watching your videos is like watching your thought process spoken out loud. you're extremely intuitive, and you can see the wheels turning at each step of your process and why you've chosen the particular diagnosis path. your laid-back southern demeanor, and your straightforward integrity is very refreshing. but I've got to admit I'm from the west cost so I adjust the RUclips playback speed much faster so you sound like someone familiar from around here. lol: no disrespect intended.

I like all your videos. I enjoy watching the CAN bus diagnostic videos. I retired from being an auto/truck/small engine Electrician, but only saw a little of bus communication problems. And those didn't cause no starts or total shutdowns. So watching You, Ivan, Eric O and Diagnose Dan has added some non book training and understanding of the different CAN systems, plus the tech tips for better/quicker testing. Like that 120 ohm resistor and bingo! The engine starts, gauges works and life is looking much better!

Visual inspection. Look where someone else has touched. Twisting wires and throwing on heat shrink is definitely shady practice. A live stream and interactive diag would be interesting. You would probably be looking at, at least, a 4 hour venture and would most certainly need an assistant to read comments so you don’t have to go back and forth too much.

That wiring repair from the previous "tech" reminds me of a young guy who worked in our shop. GM had a recall on the 08-13 r/v body suv to cut out the airbag connectors under the front seats and hard wire the circuits. This guy was doing them in half the time anyone else was. Eventually the first one came back and was assigned to me. Circuits were twisted together and shrink wrapped. After the 10th one came back he no longer had a job. It was so bad across all dealerships they had to issue a special policy extended warranty on this issue. Id love to see a video on an intermittent communication issue thats very hard to duplicate.

Think about in the future when you can just plug in your PC to the DLC and make a simple AI prompt, telling it to recreate a copy of the best scantool available for the car you're working on: and it just builds out the software right in front of you in a few seconds or minutes. This is the level of capability that AI is supposed to come to within the next 20 years. It already can write code pretty well

I've seen interactive videos like that in RUclips. THinking back: I think they may have just been short videos, and when you do the "interactive choice" - it would just link you to the next video. but those are a lot harder to make than you think-- because you have to make so many little videos, including things that are unnecessary. It never really caught on, because it's too much work and not much pay off.

I use bare crimp sleeves for wiring repairs, then solder the sleeve to the wire. The sleeve gives a mechanical connection that will hold the wires in place and eliminates the sharp wire strand ends that try to poke through the heat shrink. It’s faster and less frustrating in cramped places and allows all wires to be spliced then soldered in a batch operation.
