This thing kicks ass though, honestly, I think it's quite an exceptional vehicle. I'm willing to bet though, that nobody whatsoever 20 years ago thought that THIS, would ever be a Hummer.
Great video. Although EVs may not be ready for the mainstream - lack of range, excessive weight, infrastructure, and cost being a few hurdles still yet to tackle - this is a good look of what's to come in the next ten to twenty years. Personally I'd like a smaller version more akin to the H3 of years past (similar in size to a 4Runner or Wrangler) and maybe a PIEV option rather than full electric. But in any case, it's an exciting glimpse into the future. EVs don't have to be boring.
I may have agreed with you in the past, but the Model Y was the best selling vehicle of any type in 2023. I don't think it's gets any more mainstream than that!
@@Nebula1701oh, for around town driving or even short road trips they're fine. I'm thinking more along the lines of off roading, like in this video. If you're out in the desert, you need to have the battery capacity to run the trail all day and then get back into town. Donut did a Cybertruck video where their range dropped like a rock off road. ICE cars can carry Jerry cans for the times they need extra range, but you can't do that with EVs. It'll be solved eventually.
@@backwoodstherapy Hummer has twice the battery capacity of the Cybertruck and off-roading is its home. Anyway... other EVs would be able to charge up the EV needing a boost. Many are now getting V2V charging capability. (Vehicle to Vehicle charging) There are also portable batteries you can get for quick charge ups... just enough to get ya back to the start of the trail where there should be some Charging stations.
Maybe you should wait 50 years? I have been driving teslas since 2016, range around 350 miles, supercharge about 5 times a year for a total of 2 hrs, 1 trip to tesla every 2 years fir minimal maintenance, how much time a year you spend going to gas stations? I have seen the lines at Costco gas
Can you not control the rear steer independently or is it always active? All of the rear steer systems that I've used have a separate joystick for the rear axle steering.
Will TFL be getting a Hummer EV SUV dual-motor when they come out to review and have as a long-term vehicle? I think it would be a pretty cool vehicle for you guys to test, especially considering it will have front and rear mechanical lockers.
Replacing 20 battery modules with much less battery capacity, a diesel generator up front, and an actual fuel tank could cut so much weight and make it so much more usable. Mashing the two motor hummer version with like the potential Edison motors hybrid system is my dream, I think.
Can somebody please explain how this vehicle could do the canning stock route( or many others in Australia) ,just under 2000k ,no power, no fuel no servos road houses from begining to end . You can carry fuel or even have a supply dumped at a cattle station along the way . a bit hard to carry electricity
Two 40 lbs (16 kg) propane bottles with a small 3 KW Propane fuel cell generator would easily solve that issue. The Propane fillup would be less than 160 AUD ... I can get a propane generator for as cheap as 700 cdn (800 AUD) so range is no longer an issue AND the propane will support a lot of shrimp on the barbie!
@@djtesseract3064 It wouuld be debatble if that was enough fuel to get you through but you would run out of food anf water before you got to the end , charging from a 240v generator gives you 2km of charge for 10 minutes . I gotta be honest here. For dedicated off-road trails I don’t have an issue with a 9000lb Hummer but going up trails to hiking spots I get frustrated with how excessively large trucks tear up trails that increase washout and create huge ruts that have to constantly be repaired
Environmental Protection Agency officials have meetings that i think you should attend, but I think the Hummer only digs on the trails that you drive it to. If you don’t want to create huge ruts, don’t. They’ve even went further and demonstrated in the video that it can handle near rock crawling, so you don’t have to necessarily destroy the terrain to have fun in this vehicle. Y’all have to make sh!t so hard. Always find something to complain about.
I’ve seen far more bro-dozers tearing apart trails by flooring it at every opportunity because spinning tires=testosterone than I have large trucks like Power Wagons and Hummers (which take the trail at a crawl to prevent damage)
Probably less than 0% chance of that, however it really would be nice if they had offered an SUV on the Colorado/ canyon frame. That truck in SUV form would be a real 4Runner killer.
37 inch tires, Nitto Ridge grapplers would of been best. ❤ Good year tires stink off road and on road. It was night and day on my power wagon. Less bumpy on highway with less noise. Sticky on rocks and stable off road. Nitto tires felt soft like glue.
@@christianglaude6659it doesn’t have to do anything a Raptor or TRX does in order to be a Super Truck. I agree that the weight is a major issue with EVs off-road - although there’s a lot of tech on that beast beyond the batteries that are adding weight. I suspect that the other stuff - which appears to primarily relate to the programming - will get figured out over time. My Wrangler 4Xe doesn’t have the throttle issue you guys talk about. I don’t know if I’ve just gotten used to it or it’s because they figure it out for the ‘24s, but in low range I find that I electric-only is my preferred set-up off-road. My second Tesla is much better than my first and FSD is now actually usable on the road. That’s the thing about tech, it typically gets better over time. BEVs and hybrids will improve over time and these guys will eventually figure out the best set-up that actually works both on and off-road.
If GM is listening, they should totally do a slant back model as a nod to the OG H1 and HMMWV. Yeah, you'd lose cargo space, but it'd look cool and be more efficient with better aero.
You pushed these much harder than the Toyota's. Has the Tacoma become less capable, durable? Looks a bit scary on the downhill, could run away with all the weight. Also off camber looks like the weight pulls it sideways more.

There are clearly issues with weight, and power delivery. There are times when you're getting too much torque too quickly, and others where the computer 'driving aids' are getting in the way. All that said, it's still orders of magnitude better than the CT.

GM is quickly establishing itself as another leader in the EV world joining Tesla at the top. The Hummer EV SUV really gives you that Hummer vibe we all know and love from the 2000s. The SUV is the obvious successor to where the Hummer brand left off.
They have to figure a way to drastically lower the weight… the poor trail was getting pummeled by the Hummer EV. In an age where trail use is under increased scrutiny, that’s not gonna help us keep trails open.
I own a ford lightning extended range. I will sell it when the battery and motor warranty is up in 8 yrs.(standard warranty for EV) Beyond that I rotate tires, wipers, washer fluid. These are not good for towing long distance or diving over 180 miles daily. Or if you can't plug in 220 voltage at home in your driveway. Cheers.😀
The batter( ies) ( hundreds of them) weigh 3,000 lbs on a fake hummer. Highly collectable in 40 years? Early EV adopters are now learning what a new battery pack costs. $20k-25k. And that's for a Tesla. I can't imagine what a Hummer EV battery pack will cost.
In forty years you will probably be able to get a traveling suitcase sized solid state battery with the same capacity and 1/5th the weight for under 6 grand (in today's money). (What I mean is it probably won't be as expensive to repair an old EV like this and you will be reducing it's weight in the process.)

These trucks will not be around or collectible in 10 years unless there is an affordable way to convert it to a V8. The batteries are so expensive that most of these new ones will be in junk yards in 4 to 8 years if they don't melt from battery fires. GM has done a good job with their batteries compared to other manufactures when it comes to not catching fire as I haven't heard of a Hummer EV catching fire yet. However, there are not many on the road yet. TFL absolutely should mention the potential fire risks of owning an EV everytime they do an ev video. Not many people understand the fire risk and safety should come first, even if it makes the car company that invited you out for testing not so happy. However, they never say anything particularly bad about any new car they test anymore because they are afraid GM will give them the Subaru treatment. I miss the old days, when TFL was not afraid to make a not so nice review.

What range do you want? Infrastructure is improving quickly.
Not a fan of Ev's (yet) but if had 100K+ I'd get this thing over the Cyber truck. I liked what Tommy said...it is over engineered.
So ur missing critical thinking skills?
Can you not control the rear steer independently or is it always active? All of the rear steer systems that I've used have a separate joystick for the rear axle steering.
I don't think you can independently control it like a proper rear steer system... You can only pick a mode to change it's behavior.
Depends on the mode you are in can be 1:1 or 1.2:1 in steering. Can also disable it completely.
Did I miss whether there’s a mode to have rear steer in same direction as front?
Are we all just forgetting how the Hummer software issues left Roman stranded on the street?
Will TFL be getting a Hummer EV SUV dual-motor when they come out to review and have as a long-term vehicle? I think it would be a pretty cool vehicle for you guys to test, especially considering it will have front and rear mechanical lockers.
Y'all can have your Tesla Cybertrucks but as for me(despite not being an EV fan) am having me a Hummer(SUV/Truck).man I ❤❤ this thing!😮
4:00 perfect opportunity to try crab mode missed.
That would’ve worked perfectly there.
Replacing 20 battery modules with much less battery capacity, a diesel generator up front, and an actual fuel tank could cut so much weight and make it so much more usable. Mashing the two motor hummer version with like the potential Edison motors hybrid system is my dream, I think.
If that thing can get ya excited about off roading they did a great job!
Can somebody please explain how this vehicle could do the canning stock route( or many others in Australia) ,just under 2000k ,no power, no fuel no servos road houses from begining to end . You can carry fuel or even have a supply dumped at a cattle station along the way . a bit hard to carry electricity
This suv is not made for Australia. It’s made for good old USA 🇺🇸
To do 3000km would take 31 days of charging plus travel time , that is under ideal conditions , now add didcharge when using low range in sand dunes
@@G-Rated damn someone shit in your face last night with that last sentence? I make an opinion and that’s your response? Wow
I’ve seen far more bro-dozers tearing apart trails by flooring it at every opportunity because spinning tires=testosterone than I have large trucks like Power Wagons and Hummers (which take the trail at a crawl to prevent damage)
Sweet vehicle, thanks Roman and Tommy
drove that trail system in 2021 and it was awesome!
The rear steer seems to be a hinderance can you lock it out ?
yes
This makes Cybertruck look more like a cartoon than it already is.
For the not-so-big-EV-fans like me, I hope GM will introduce a gas hybrid option at a lower cost. That would be a very desirable SUV to have.
💯 just delete some battery for a efficient diesel or gas engine that runs at one constant rpm, making it run clean as well.
Yes please!
Its also make it like 50% smaller BC its the size of a house 😂
Probably less than 0% chance of that, however it really would be nice if they had offered an SUV on the Colorado/ canyon frame. That truck in SUV form would be a real 4Runner killer.
The convertible factor alone makes me want this over a Rivian R1S or Tesla Cybertruck.
37 inch tires, Nitto Ridge grapplers would of been best. ❤ Good year tires stink off road and on road. It was night and day on my power wagon. Less bumpy on highway with less noise. Sticky on rocks and stable off road. Nitto tires felt soft like glue.
Let's see the dash - does it have instruments in front of the driver? or just that big tablet in the middle?
It's not a Tesla. Of course it has an instrument panel.
This truck will destroy the Cyberdump!!!!!
GM said that this is their super truck.....make it fly!
You must haven’t heard 0-60 times yet, it “flies” for sure.
@@G-Rated I'm talking about literally fly, like the Raptor & TRX did.
In American term...jump it!
@@christianglaude6659it doesn’t have to do anything a Raptor or TRX does in order to be a Super Truck. When the Raptor R and TRX are hitting 60 mph in 3 seconds, can clear rocks this large, boast rear wheel steering, tow 10,000 lbs, and drive itself then _they’ll_ be able to say the Raptor and TRX are super trucks…until then they ain’t.
Turdferguson - Jeep, Ford, Toyota just to name a few. Jeep hosts Easter Jeep Safari in Moab every year and brings several concepts.. just one example
10,000lbs. That's how much these weigh. 10. Thousand. Pounds. Crazy. It's amazing they did as much as they did considering the crazy weight.
On the efficiency, does that mean you can drive to the trailhead, drive the trail and make it back to a charger in one charge?
If GM is listening, they should totally do a slant back model as a nod to the OG H1 and HMMWV. Yeah, you'd lose cargo space, but it'd look cool and be more efficient with better aero.
There exists an aftermarket accessory for the bed that does exactly that.
@@Nebula1701 Cool!! Didn't know that.
The off-road ability is pretty amazing. I was not expecting that. What kind of range are we talking about here?
How did you get charging out there? Looking to get one
You pushed these much harder than the Toyota's. Has the Tacoma become less capable, durable?
Looks a bit scary on the downhill, could run away with all the weight. Also off camber looks like the weight pulls it sideways more.
You literally just watched it crawl down the mountain. Did it run away with all the weight?
@@G-Rated Not just my opinion, even they have commented on issues with the extra weight in several situations, several times with ev's.

I don't like EVs but I've always liked the Hummer EV. It's one of my darkest secrets

Being able to control your rear steering angle seperate. Because that tail swing can get you in trouble.
Quick slide on the screen to control angle?
Could've swapped to a grab walk quickly on that first obstacle.
Would be a tone if fun actually.
Remember when the pickup version was selling for crazy money during the pandemic? I do like the SUV a lot. Biggest concern is depreciation. What do you thru that will be?
There are clearly issues with weight, and power delivery. There are times when you're getting too much torque too quickly, and others where the computer 'driving aids' are getting in the way. All that said, it's still orders of magnitude better than the CT.
I wonder if lift kits and portals come out for these to fit 37s or 40s
I thinks it will fit 37s stock. Portals and 40s would be nice, but woukd kill range.
I really wanna see this go up against the new Land Cruiser. I know they're not quite the same class of vehicle but I think they're close enough to compare.
How does it do in mud?
Love that they are fixing the problems but again in 100k miles what is the battery replacement vs what the value of the vic gonna be?
I wounder for later iterations of the EV Hummer if they would forego the rear steering and put a solid rear Axel instead for better articulation

I want to see you folks testing the new M-B G580 Electric ... Tests I have seen from Europe make it look like the world's best off road SUV... When are you getting one to test?
GM is quickly establishing itself as another leader in the EV world joining Tesla at the top. The Hummer EV SUV really gives you that Hummer vibe we all know and love from the 2000s. The SUV is the obvious successor to where the Hummer brand left off.
That ledge was defnitely a nasty one and the surprisingly the hummer did it sooo well. Good job GM.
They have to figure a way to drastically lower the weight… the poor trail was getting pummeled by the Hummer EV. In an age where trail use is under increased scrutiny, that’s not gonna help us keep trails open.
How much would repairs on this thing cost? Seems expensive not just to buy, but also to maintain.
I own a ford lightning extended range. I will sell it when the battery and motor warranty is up in 8 yrs.(standard warranty for EV) Beyond that I rotate tires, wipers, washer fluid. The batter( ies) ( hundreds of them) weigh 3,000 lbs on a fake hummer. I did one of the hardest trails in Moab with my 82 CJ7 and the best performing vehicle was an old Willies Jeep that did so well mostly because it was so light, maneuverable, simple but tall gearing and short wheelbase.

I like the performance, but the extreme weight destroys the trail when climbing 10x faster than a lighter vehicle. I'm both impressed but also cringing a little watching it rip the soil and rock apart when trying to go up. :(
My dad used to call his FJ40 the Land Crusher, but the meaning is literal in this case. The Hummer is not conquering the trails, it’s destroying them. Don’t care for it.
