My Biggest Project Yet (GIRL BUMPER RESTORATION)

- Today, I'm tackling a project that's been on my mind for months! My F150's bumpers are super rusty, and it's making the overall look of my truck a little sad. So I'm going to be pulling them off and refinishing them myself! Oh, and I'm NOT a mechanic...What could go wrong?!
Love your enthusiasm, determination, humor and cuteness. I'm learning things too. Great job.
Thank you!! And that's awesome! Great job to you too!
As a fellow Canadian i am loving all the Mastercraft and Canadian tire tools. lol
lol heck ya!
@@Meg.August I have the same truck 2014 black 250k. Basically every video you have made is stuff I have been planning on doing and not done. Was going to buy the black raptor liner for rockers and bumpers. These videos might have encouraged me to get out the Mastercraft wrenches and get er done.
Honestly one of the most fascinating and absorbing youtube videos I have watched in a long time. Your tenacity and good nature even when things are going wrong is a great attribute! Here in the UK there are a few youtube channels where old Rolls Royce's are being restored,, but the truth is that those involved clearly have some, or a lot of mechanical experience. In your case tackling such projects, with as you admit, limited experience is fantastic! Keep up the good work!!!
BTW here in London if we have one day of snow it's a major event!
If always doing something was a person! Lol and I’m here for it! You crack me up cause you are forever getting yourself into something but always seem to figure it out!
lol thank you!
Hi Meg , instead of those slippery wire wheel grinders you should really try flap wheels on your drill .. so much easier and better to control !
Your channel is now in my top 3 favorite youtube channels!
Meg, Vice Grip Garage and NoNonsenseKnowHow are my Friday viewing musts!!!
Or any time really.
For any rubber based spray like plasti-dip or rhino liner, soaking the can for 5 minutes in warm water helps thin the material making it easier to spray.
You're doing great Meg!
Never heard of that before, I'll look into that! And thank you!
Great job Meg
Thank you!
Meg, you never disappoint. This was not an easy task and once again you worked through each challenge and overcame. I love the energy you approach these projects with and am really impressed with your tenacity. Great video can't wait to see what you're up to next.
Thanks so much, Rob!
It’s a real joy to see how you pull this off (a lot of rust for a 2019 vehicle). And also like your humorous actions all wit a big beautiful smile. It keeps me watching till the end. It seems to be a beautiful place where you live. Looking forward to the next adventure!
Thank you! Yes, it is super beautiful here, very fortunate! The truck itself is 2014, but the bumper was replaced in 2019.
Nice problem solving on the spare hoist. Did the same thing myself once and had to get a buddy to hang from it.
That's a great idea!
Should have put the spare wheel with the valve stem facing down
So you can access to check air from time to time
Nice Job on the Rhino Line Paint Job.
I would recommend a box fan with a filter attached to draw air from the garage outside which will help with Ventilation and dust in the garage while working.
Good idea!
The "washer with teeth inside" is commonly referred to as a "retaining washer". Nice work on the Raptor liner. I've been a fan of their products for a while now. The best part is, Raptor liner bonds well to itself. So, in case someone bumps your bumpers, you can always just touch it up and no one will know!
Retaining washer! Thank you! I'll remember that for next time. And yes, I'm sure there'll be a time for some Raptor touch ups down the road 🙂
Just one tip, where shoes, you drop something on your toes you will wish you had,
Well done, girl! You're pretty quick learning.. It's always a frustration to remove rusty-frozen bolts, sometimes is better by hand since the impact is pretty agressive. From time to time also hiccups occur although you try to foresee the outcome. Ahh, winches, those always get tangled.. Now, if you ever wondered, you got the answer, why cranes have always a ball (or some similar weight) attached just before the main lifting hook. Keep on, Meg, you're awesome.. 😁
Thanks so much! And yes, definitely learned a valuable lesson with that winch!
Good job on getting through the project. Seeing you work through the rust makes me glad it's not an issue in Florida.... getting sunburned and burning your hands on a hot tool handle doesn't seem so bad.
lol! The rust and ice can be tough
Yep! I watch these videos and it makes me grateful that I live in florida too!!!

You should Crown Rust protect the underside of your truck and interior of door panels to slow down the rust.🇨🇦✌🏻
I'm looking into options for that! I was thinking of using POR 15, but just have to wait for the weather to warm up a bit.
@@Meg.AugustRather than por15 you would be better off to knock off the loose scale on the rusty under body parts/frame ect and spray with fluid film/wool wax. They even have black colored ones if you care about the underside being black again. You do have to do it annually but it is worth it. Plus you can't get por15 into the body cavities but can with woolwax or fluid film.
Get that underside cleaned super well, then coat it to slow the rust.
Another great video! I cringe when you wear flip flops working on things! Oh and that hardware might be Internal Tooth Lock Washers?
Thanks! lol
Brave lady, working around all that rusty metal, bare handed!
Nice work!
Regarding the smelling of paint through the other mask. It could have been the filter choice, or if could have been the mast wasn't seated properly because you didn't have the bottoms straps secured.
Yes the first mask I had on was just a particulate filter not aerosol!
This is pretty cool. Ford makes a pretty heavy-duty bumper. Seems pretty solid (before the rust eats it!). You're doing a great job. This is pretty entertaining stuff. Learning a lot! I'm only halfway through too.
Thanks so much!
Great good hun. 👌 good too see a Canadian girl doing this! I'm in Nova Scotia so I definitely know about dealing with rust lol
Thank you! We definitely get a crazy amount of rust up here, I've heard it's even worse out where you are
Another great Meg. You remind me so much of a friend of mine, she is very hands on and likes to do things for herself although she is having a hard time of things at the moment. Great job on the painting, a few tips i would give you for next time is if it's cold outside you can put the cans in some warm water before you spray them and this helps to thin the paint down a bit and aids with it flowing out. First coat of paint is a light tack coat, this gives the paint something to grip on to and then the 2nd and 3rd coat heavier than the first to aid paint flow and stop you from getting a rough surface finish (also warming the paint helps with that). If you have a heat gun you can use that on the plastic parts of the bumper that have been damaged by uv light to bring back the original colour, the heat draws the oils in the plastic back to the surface and makes the look new again, you can also use a blow torch if you have one them just take your time and be careful not to get the plastic to hot.
did you do the bolts up that hold the spare wheel hoist in place Meg? from the looks of the video they were still lose when you put the wheel back on.
also i am not sure if you were aware of the fact you can't just use normal primer over bare metal or not but i does not stick very well at all. really need to use an etch or wash primer that contains an acid which eats into the metal surface to give a good bond, you can also use a epoxy primer/sealer over bare metal and that is very good at sticking to bare, old paint and is waterproof but i'm not a 100% sure you can get that in rattle cans as it's a 2k product so needs hardener in order to cure
thanks for watching!
I love your tenacity.
Ah, rusty truck work in the winter....it's good to show the struggle. Maybe someday a truck made in the midwest can actually survive the midwest. Nice job sticking to it!
Thank you! It can be very tough sometimes, but I love the satisfaction in getting the project done and learning new skills along the way. I could do with less rust though lol!
Recommend you try an air blow machine to wipe the snow off your truck so easily! :)
You are amazing. You have way more patience than I do…
yea you cant really make the white match for a few reason but first is because your truck paint has been exposed to the sun and the spray paint is new. but you did really good. its fun to watch. i subbed
Thank you! And thanks for the sub!
Please if you are gonna use a swivel on a impact get a impact swivel. Those aren't worth a crap on a ratchet let alone a impact. On the backup sensors, if one goes bad none work. You are doing great keep up the good work.
Thanks!
Nicely done young lady. It's good to see more videos of women digging into their cars/trucks. This background will serve you well for years to come. Even if you have aomeone else do the work you'll have a good understanding if theyre shooting straight with you or not.
Keep up the good work. Your truck bumpers look fantastic.
First time seeing your channel. New subscriber here!
Thanks Rick! Glad to have you here!
Perfect timing! ya made my evening. (its a little sad and maybe slightly exaggerated maybe but humor me). Awesome to see you knocking some of that rust off of your ride.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching
Congrats Meg August, on getting both Bumper's-off/painted and put back-on. great job. brakes/shocks/bumpers what's next for
the Meg Audust adventures???
Thank you! I've got lots of fun projects up my sleeve, stay tuned!
Ummm... a tip from Rainman Ray's Repairs channel... when your aerosol can runs empty, fling it across the garage whilst yelling "ANOTHAAAA!"
This is my first visit to your channel, and loving it! Nice to see that your VW has a 'stick shift' (I would say manual gearbox!) - I learned to drive in 1967 and rarely drive an automatic. I'm a bit old for tinkering nowadays, but it's fun watching you!
Lol, thanks Bernard! I like the can flinging reference.
Glad you're enjoying the videos, and I love my manual/stick shift! They're very fun to drive and my brakes last forever!
Great work...the best is that you really are having fun..and it shows...keep them coming
Thank you! Will do
Love your energy you always get the job done some how
thank you!
New Subscriber working my way through your videos. I really love your 'can do' attitude and how you are not afraid to take on any job. You should always be proud of your work because you did it yourself. Always ignore unsolicited criticism and gratefully accept any helpful advice. Keep up the great videos
Thank you so much!! That's really kind. Hope you continue to enjoy the videos and thanks for the sub!
Love you Meg! you are just incredible. Love your videos, you are both funny and very capable. keep the good work coming.
Thanks so much!
great , thank you so much for sharing this video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤❤❤
Hi Meg
Can I Make A Suggestion To You
When U Re-Install Bolts ETC You Should Put Some Never Seize On The Threads OF The Bolts And Nuts, That Way They Won't Seize On & You Can Get Them Off Easier In The Future.
Great Video, I Give 100 Out Of 100 For Doing This Job. Well Done
Would highly recommend rust reformer your under frame. Easy diy. Good luck gorgeous.!
I will be looking into that in the future!
Ive never seen rust like that under car before, only good thing about living in AZ.
Great work Meg 👍🏻Appreciate you 🙂
Thanks for being here!
Hiya Meg, Love the video, you did a great job considering your lack of experience, looking underneath your F150 i'm very certain that here in the UK your car would not be roadworthy because of the severe rusting, but anyhow i look forward to your next project, keep up the good work.
Thanks John! Glad you enjoyed the video! The rust looks way worse on camera and it's actually just surface rust but I've got plans to treat it this summer to make it look a lot better!
Mega, to aid you in removing rusty bolts, wire brush and spray with penatrating oil, the bolt threads. Not the head of the bolt. ❤
Thanks for the tip! I actually realized that on my last project that I'm about to upload, and it definitely works a lot better!
First time viewer here, I must say that you did a good job. I was glad to see that you replaced what was bad instead of just rigging it to work. I will be watching you.
Thank you, Lonnie! It's much easier to work with new hardware rather than the mangled rusty bolts (the ones that didn't completely snap off lol!)
Really enjoy your projects!! Great video!! Looking forward to your next one!!!
Thanks so much, Terry!
the bolts on the new hoist didnt look like they were in tight enough, as you added the weight of the spare wheel the hoist moved and the bolts look like they could of been tightened in further if you watch from 1:01:23 you will see it move, just letting you know in case you never picked up on it
Thanks!
Yeah, you need to ice wash and clean the bottom. Hoistt it and they have an ice gun. So instead of sandblasting it with ice.
Meg you are extremely amazing and inspirational
Appreciate that Adam!
Sometimes taking a wire brush to the threads will keep them from binding with all the mud/sand caked on the bolts. Oh and if you have a Lowes nearby their hardware section has a real good variety of automotive hardware.
Good to know, thank you!
I Meg this is the first time catching your channel. Seeing you live in the rust belt I thought I would give you a couple tips. To save some of your hardware grab a bowl and put the hardware in the bowl and add distilled vinegar so it covers the hardware and let it sit overnight. For the most part it will look black and you can us a small wire brush to remove and grit. You can do the same thing to your bumper brackets just place them in a plastic tote. Once you from the vinegar and brushed them down rinse with water to nutralise the vinegar, then let them dry then you are ready for paint. The next tip will save you a wiring nightmare for the future! With all your wiring connector make sure you use Dielcctric grease on all including you bulb sockets. This will assure a weather seal as well as a solid connection as well as protecting the bulb sockets from heat with old older incandescent bulbs. So great video and keep wrenchin'
Thanks for the tips and for watching!
You should buy an under the car adaptor for your pressure washer. You could use it everytime you pressure wash your vehicle. It just attaches to the pressure washer nozzle and allows you to wash the underside of your vehicle. Check it out. These work really well. Another name for PENETRATE in my part of the world is PANTHER PISS.
Well we can get Rino Liner in the stores down here in Texas. Plus some other brands. And I use it just the same as you so way ta go.
Another great job on those bumpers
A lot of hard work but main thing looking fab 😁
Thank you!
Wow. Where have you been my entire life. ❤
Enjoying your content Miss Meg. I stumbled across your channel today! Your weather looks like mine here in Wisconsin!
That's great to hear! Thanks for watching!
Props, workin on that rusty truck.🤕 I be busting up my hands workin on my car and its nowhere near that rusty.
Looks great! Keep it up the videos are awesome. 🫠
Thank you! It was hard work but I'm really happy with how it turned out. Appreciate the support
I used the raptor liner on the move bumpers i built for my truck. That stuff is really tuff and holds up great. Your bumpers look great!
Thanks very much! I'm loving how it turned out too, and it really is a great product. I could have prepped and primed a little more I think - a good take-away for future projects!
Can’t believe how rusty your cars get up north. Wow!!
It looks worse on camera, it's mainly just surface rust! But yes, because we salt, brine, and sand our roads up here, our vehicles do take a beating in the winter.
The toothed washers are called anti-vibration washers. , great job . One basic rule is to only tighten nuts when all nuts have been started 👍🏻🇬🇧
you're right she doesn't those anti vibration. street walker get them daily
Thank you! I have forgotten that rule many times lol, but starting to remember it more consistently!
Hey there Meg just wanted you to know that I have watched you in a couple of videos and you were working on your truck and you really did do a great job àt what you set out to do exactly to fix your truck up slowly but surely you have been doing this in your videos and I really could not be more prou😢 of you because you really don't seems to let anything get you distractions from the Job àt. Hand and you really do such a great job àt what ever you seem to be working on for real it's kinda crazy that when you make up your mind to get something done without anything getting in your way you can be much more successful àt what are truly trying to get done for real now folks for real now you really need to believe that because it's so very true folks for real now folks for real now you hear
Thanks Charles!
I’ve noticed when you are breaking a bolt or nut loose you are holding on to your ratchet or wrench like a hammer, if you just push with the palm of your hand and leave your fingers extended you are less likely to bust your knuckles when the fasteners initially breaks free.
I'll try that, thanks!
Thank you for sharing this video
Congratulations for trying to do this
good luck
Thank you!
42:00 ... a manual transmission! Hurray!
I love standard!
It looks just great good job
Thanks!
21:10 plastic jug headrest is brilliant, i need to try that next time, thanks
Haha! It was a huge help!!
I would paint the flares with that in the spring or possibly when you touch up any winter chips on the bumpers if there are any. This will kind of tie in the difference in color throughout your truck. Great job and is coming from a body man.
Not a bad idea, thanks for the tip!
a little tip for you.. when your trying to undo Rusty Nut's or Bolt's if they tighten up when you are trying to undo them.. tighten them back it will clear the rust/dirt in the Threads of the nut or bolt less risk of Break bolts or stripping threads that way. smart move with the Egg Crates btw Bumpers are heavy.
I'll try that, thanks!
I love that she does NOT have stupid music going!
Awesome job, never easy with old rusty bolts. What's more impressive is you kept a positive attitude throughout, well done and the truck looks great. Subscribed!😀
Thanks so much! Appreciate the sub!
@@Meg.August Thanks Meg.😀
Nice job! And great attitude. Am I the only one concerned about your foot wear? You really don't want a bashed toe...or worse!
Thank you! And no, you're not the only one concerned for my toes 🙂
Great video Meg
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
I gotta do this to my 2018. Thanks for the info. Definitely a project for sure.
Highly recommend doing it! Thanks for watching!
You are adorable. People may be confused when you say zap strap. I think the more common name is Zip Tie. Keep up the good work girl!
First time viewer and simply anazing channel you have. Subbed. Looking forward watching the rest and watching your channel grow. All the best from the UK 🇬🇧
Thanks for the kind words and the sub!
love the wooleys and sandles, my kind of people lol
I like how you switch from gloves to bare hands, girl does not like to get dirty!!!!
Thats alot of rust for 2019. Good job.
I know, right?! Thanks!
Meg , It's a difficult challenge, I just think that the bumper of the car is two-colored compared to the color of the fabric of the body of the car, the color you chose is matte white.
Ya, it's definitely not perfect but it's much better!
@@Meg.August ❤💐
It would be better if you used an air compressor and a paint gun
I would suggest some POR15 for the underbody rust while you have that spare tire out. No prep, just paint.
Great work! Looks like it came out really nice 😊
Thank you!
Put all your bolts in loosely first. Then go back and tighten them.
Absolutely! A great tip.
I love watching your video's. You are awesome ! Always honest, you show the truth. Great job.
I saw a glance of the tires and immediately knew you are in Canada. XD
another fantastic video.keep up the good work
Thanks so much! Will do
Metal bumper make so much sense 😂😂
wire wheel attachments in the grinder work better than the cordless drill.. and for non critical finishes like in this vid just use a paint brush, one coat would be all it takes
Ya I have a wire wheel for the grinder but it's way more hectic
Best video yet! Thanks for sharing this project and the truck is looking way better!! I was considering swapping my F150 chrome bumpers out for a pair of salvaged body color matched ones or paint mine blue. F-that! Just gonna stick with the chrome. Lmao
Btw…really enjoyed the longer vid. Pretty sure the RUclips algorithm likes the +60min videos too. They seem to pump them much more. This was actually the first one that appeared on my recommended thing. Just an fyi…
Glad to hear you liked this one! I'm really happy with how the truck is looking too. I've got some more fun stuff in store for it in the near future 😊
You need a creeper cart to maneuver underneath any car. You could lay rust prevention spray after placing new parts or around the car to prevent rust. Let us know when you PO Box will be ready to help you out with some correct tools.
Thank you so much, that's very kind! I have been thinking about a creeper cart for a while now! Hoping to add it to my garage in the future 😊 Will keep you posted when I get a PO box set up, thank you!
Good job, but I'd recommend wearing somewhat thick gloves when working with your hands anywhere near metallic parts, especially partially rusted metal and semi-sharp edges. It's easy to cut oneself inadvertently trying to remove e.g. rusted bolts!
😊😊 always lube your nuts and bolt when removing or CRC anti-seize when installing for the next time 😊😊😊😊
But Meg, if you already have the truck disassembled, you should take advantage of cleaning the other parts that you disassemble so that everything is like new!!!
Nice job Meg. Rust is no fun at all lol.
Thank you! So true, rust is a pain!
Great Video! Look forward to more!
Thanks! I'll keep them coming
A girl thats handy, not affraid to get dirty and can drive stick 😇
Love the videos plus your easy on the eyes 👍
thry're called spray can paint handles..get them ..your painting will improve 200% I promise.... Savanna
Spray can paint handles are amazing!! Well worth it
It's amazing how fast things rust now!!
