I don't blame a lot of the side characters in this movie. Most people know about mental health issues but are very ill-equipped to handle people who suffer from them. They are unable to wrap their heads around that mentality and force themselves into their own safe space for protection and then notify the right people. This is what Trevor did, he contacted Rose' therapist for guidance and the sister (huge bitch) witnessed bad things from Mom as the older sibling and doesn't want to revisit that memory. I can't shun most of these characters for being afraid or feeling useless because they should. The therapist on the other hand was condescending, Kal Penn's character was more therapeutic than her. Good reaction and thought the atmosphere was very menacing. The ending was kinda cheesy though.
Exactly, spot on perception. Some people take their trauma to the grave and if they have had children, it only passes on through their lineage. Its like an aggregated curse. In regards to the dialogue of the film with how harshly the characters spoke to our main girl, I think it's important to consider that this is majorly in the perspective of Rose. So there is a great chance that the other characters weren't actually talking that way to her but that's how SHE felt they were. As someone who's gone through depression myself, I can confirm that regardless of the best intentions my loved ones sent my way, my brain would most of the time warp everything said to me as a jab or attack. At the same time, the film uses this same dialogue to address the insensitivity that is often sent toward those suffering from mental health issues. Conversations are a two-way street, and I do appreciate being able to see how both sides may see the same situation. Just my two cents.
Great observation, I find myself trying to see Rose from other character’s point of views and given her family history and completely erratic behavior I totally understand why almost everyone thought she was mentally slipping.

I'm really grateful for all you guys said about the disrespect and how poorly mental health was treated by 'outsiders'. It definitely got to me when I watched this in cinemas, as someone who spent a night in a psychiatric ward who had people say things like that. Police were called down because of two guys who were fighting (one of who had been perfectly polite to me and another girl, apologising when they thought they scared us and keeping their distance afterwards). It was this tiny waiting room corridor and I had folded myself up on a chair, I have a few policeman like a foot away from me, so I decide to ask them how their night was going. I got completely ignored and one said to another "I don't get why we have to be here with the crazies". So yeah, people please be respectful and just generally be good people, especially if you are in a position of power!!
Watched this twice in the theatre. The first time was by myself then the second was with my mom and I swear to god we were near the end of the film and I decided to look to see if my mom had her hands over her eyes like she normally does and I turn she’s just staring at me with a big ass smile made me jump she hasn’t let it down since but Ima get her back for that since we are watching the exorcist in theatre tomorrow.
I was always more focused on the acting when I watched this movie and then watched reactions of it, I didn't notice how excellent the cinematography was until Steven pointed it out!
This is my favorite horror movie of last year. The cast is excellent, the kills are terrifying, the jump scares are intense. The cinematography is gorgeous.
Man the one where Rose was listening to the sound file and the entity screamed at her the moment she focused took me so far back to the Jingle Bells jumpscare prank that plagued the internet before RUclips was even a thing. Good times. The jumpscares here were all great and not just some cheap fakeouts
If you two liked this movie, you should watch 'It Follows'. Similar domino premise, fewer jump scares, but really well done and purposefully ambiguous time period (you're not sure when exactly the movie takes place)
Kevin bacons daughter was great in this. I hoped for happy ending cause the ex detective and her woulda been great if that scene with her talking to him was real. But was good with bleak ending also.
This was easily one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in a long time! The camera work, the acting, the way they build the tension in this is so stressful and creepy, just masterfully executed.
It’s always funny to see a professional see a professional. Because they all know what lines will be used for what situations lol😂. An eye opener for them.
I believe that the first ”monster” right after the mom is acctually Roses vision of how she saw her mother as a ten year old. The monster have the mothers features but distorted and the same clothes
So glad you two finally got around to this one! It's such a great metaphor for mental health wrapped into a horror show! The premise of how we (as a society) try to push mental illness away and ignore it or minimize it, is so on point with today's perspective. Someone feeling depressed, we're so quick to tell them to just "smile" ... because no one has time for depression/mental illness/suicidal thoughts. And the way NO ONE would validate her neurosis. It's so on point. And I get how the "monster" going inside of her or consuming her is a bit much... but if you think of her finally giving up to her trauma... and then passing it on - it worked for me. :) Great reaction you two!
Sosy Bacon NAILED her performance. So good!! She did not only inherit her parent's looks, but also their talent. And great to see Carla from Scrubs again, Judy Reyes played a similar character on one episode of Special Victims Unit.
Mental health is so important, and unfortunately, there are still individuals who do talk to others with insensitive words(due to them not understanding, but not trying to understand.) leading to the individual going to therapy, to feel even worse. Therefore, it’s just better to actually talk to others and listen.
Why does the significant other in all these movies never believe what their partner is telling them? I would so totally believe my wife if she told me she was seeing something. But then again, we have lived in a haunted house so we both believe that stuff is possible.
I think the fact that so many people use such insensitive language for mental health in this movie is 1) realistic (I can totally imagine gross hospital execs calling their patients 'nutcases' to each other), and 2) makes the story scarier. The other characters are so dismissive of mental health that it isolates the person in crisis because everyone else in the movie just says, "she's a fruitloop" and totally disregardsher concerns. It adds to the fear and frustration. I just kept thinking, "why doesn't she kill herself by herself, early on, so no one else gets it?" But I guess it makes sense that protagonists in horror movies would have a strong will to live.
@@breeayeezy it means they used physical things, like prosthetics, costumes, camera angles, animatronics, puppetry, fake blood, etc, to achieve the shot. as opposed to using a computer to do it.
I absolutely love when Nikki mentioned the dad joke and she starts laughing, then Steven tries moving on and and Nikki spread her laughter to Steven ugh you guys are honestly the best. I don’t think that was the demons only form. The demon used Rose’s mom as a fear factor to scare the hell out of Rose. It worked a little too well to the point where Rose thought she beat it when it was all in her head. Some families are like that sadly, they aren’t emotionally trying to be there fully. When people automatically resort to calling people that are obviously going through something. Calling them crazy is the worst thing to call a person in panic and fear.
This movie would have probably stayed with me if I haven't seen "It follows" and "The Ring" before. But as a few mentioned it's a good metaphor for trauma and how it can be passed to someone and stays with them and a chance to also pass it along.
It was good for a low budget first time directing. But, for anyone who's a fan of Mike Flanagan's work of The Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor and Midnight Mass... this takes a lot of inspiration from the quiet shots, jump scares, use of sound. The first shot is literally the same as one used before by him. Although the lead actress and the first who kills herself were good, all the other actors were poor or irritating. I did like the creepy ending though.
The shots and soundtracks for this movie really impressed me, whatever about the scare scenes they were really good too but the way the shots made you feel was quite clever, every single shot had a purpose. I loved how they made Rose feel the other side of her patients and not be believed, even by those closest to her.
Fun fact, 90% of all killings by the "Smile Entity" could be avoided if these people learned to close their eyes... It can't traumatize, then cling to you if you don't look at its attempt to scar you
I was thinking that. But then it might be when you're in the presence of the demon you can't look away. We really don't get any rules about how the Curse works in this movie. Gonna guess in the sequel they might address it...
Yeah this isn't Bird Box I don't think not looking is gonna save you. Just because u close ur eyes it's not gonna prevent u from being in the presence of the traumatizing moment u can still hear what's going on and ur still physically there
When I watched this I immediately thought the best thing to do would be to unfortunately sacrifice yourself to end the chain by isolating yourself from everyone (which she tried, but didn't take the necessary measures to prevent being found) and make it quick, if you can't murder someone else, you're dead already, save everyone else from it
Hey guys! considering what you guys really enjoyed about this movie, I would highly recommend It Follow (if you guys haven't seen it already - I didn't see a reaction video though). I saw this movie in theaters, one of my friends was so scared that he left half way through and my other friend bolted out of the theater when it ended
The demon's true form is indeed the most gruesome and horrific thing I have ever seen in a horror movie. Hearing Steven say Beetlejuice three times cracked me up when he saw the demon's true form lol
Mental Health Therapist here, this movie is a great example of how people with mental health struggles are alienated and driven to greater distress by supposed supports. The movie made a point to go through all the different "traditional" terms used to deride a person with mental health struggles. It puts you in the place of a person who struggles to articulate things like anxiety and depression, never mind psychosis. The first thing most patients say to me is "I don't know how to say it", and once they try, the next thing is usually, "I know that sounds crazy." I'll also add that most people don't ignore their mental health so much as they don't even know how to gauge or measure it. A professor of mine once said, "Most of your patients will be people who should've come to you 5 years earlier." People take exhaustion, anxiety, depression, even trauma, far too casually because so many people do it. People forget what it means and feels to be healthy. It's not until the symptoms are giant neon lights that people even think to go for help much of the time.
Sosie Bacon blew it out the park with her performance as the main character. Fun Fact: If you didn’t know Sosie Bacon is the daughter of veteran actors Kevin Bacon & Kyra Sedgwick.
It’s telling how the only 2 parts you really have “negatives” to say about, are revealed to be hallucinations that were intentionally ramped up in ridiculousness to somewhat deviate from the reality of the rest of the film. Honestly, this movie didn’t just surprise me with how good it was, it’s now one of my favorites I’ve seen in a long time. The cinematography, score, imagery, etc. are all so fresh and unique.
Nikki had a point when she mentioned the movies color because a lot of things in the movie were subconsciously telling you or the characters to be happy and smile, for example the hospital is a shade of pink called Baker-Miller Pink which is a pink that was created and tested in a lot of prisons to reduce violence and make people more “happy”
what do you expect though? people to say "ok youre cursed, lets nip this in the bud," the people didnt know how to deal with the person they love, seemingly going absolutely crazy. i mean her sister put her dead cat in her nephews birthday present. just sayin
Just watched this over the weekend. Great creepy movie with lots of tension and REALLY effective jump scares. It also did a good job at highlighting how many of us are completely dismissive of other people suffering from deep trauma or even mental illness that they are powerless to do anything about. Great horror movie with a really well done underpinning narrative about trauma and mental health.
If I was the husband/boyfriend and my woman was going through that I would tell her she's an amazing therapists and her patients she's her as a becon of hope when they are going through there moods and you have been able to find answers on many occasions. I would say hear me out and try to keep an opened mind, how we try the spiritual route and see what happens as the normal route isn't working for now. Take her to a spiritual healer and maybe it could help temporarily or permanently.
I absolutely _LOVED_ this movie. I've watched it 4 times already. Those twisting, upside down camera shots gave me vertigo. I felt like I was falling _UP_ .
Makes you wonder...if this crazy paranormal shit happens to rose then who's to say some of her patients aren't experiencing something similar? Makes you wonder how many of her patients are ACTUALLY crazy??
I cried during this movie. Ive had severe ocd and the fear and crisis she experiences i can relate to. It's so goddamn scary i just wanted to die. Until i did erp therapy and got medication i got through it. Great movie that shows how trauma gives trauma to others. The only thin im confused about is that she died in the end. I guess it occured because she ran outside of the house instead of attacking/embracing it. Overall i was suprised by this movie cause i thought it would suck. 8/10

This movie is terrifying. And oh man, your reactions at 29:07 were *priceless.*
Mine was 35:32 😂
I was always more focused on the acting when I watched this movie and then watched reactions of it, I didn't notice how excellent the cinematography was until Steven pointed it out!
YEEEES! Great film!
It Follows is even better IMO jus the productions isn't that high quality like this movie
She find the cat:
“I mustache you a question…”
Kevin bacons daughter was great in this. I hoped for happy ending cause the ex detective and her woulda been great if that scene with her talking to him was real. But was good with bleak ending also.
Oh I didn't know that was his daughter Sosie!
I felt bad for Nikki, she almost cried in the cat scene. At the same time it's funny see her screaming 😆
This was easily one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in a long time! The camera work, the acting, the way they build the tension in this is so stressful and creepy, just masterfully executed.
You guys are awesome. The respectful way you speak about mental illness makes me love you even more. Favourite reaction channel.
16:45, "I remember him being faster than that"; every time Steven made a joke, Nikki just gave him that 'really?' look😂
It’s always funny to see a professional see a professional. Because they all know what lines will be used for what situations lol😂. An eye opener for them.
Just knowing the smiles are real and not cgi 😂😂😂 scary
The young actress playing the young victim at 5:00. She is very good. She going to have a great career.
Great reaction you two!
The sister head drop freaked me the heck out. Your reactions were awesome 😂
P.S. At least Joel has a head start on what's going on. Wish him luck 🤞
The director said the curse was manipulating what she heard
I think the fact that so many people use such insensitive language for mental health in this movie is 1) realistic (I can totally imagine gross hospital execs calling their patients 'nutcases' to each other), and 2) makes the story scarier. The other characters are so dismissive of mental health that it isolates the person in crisis because everyone else in the movie just says, "she's a fruitloop" and totally disregardsher concerns. It adds to the fear and frustration.
I just kept thinking, "why doesn't she kill herself by herself, early on, so no one else gets it?" But I guess it makes sense that protagonists in horror movies would have a strong will to live.
btw the monster was like 90% pratical effects and about 10% CGI. loved it soo much
what does pratical effects means?
@@breeayeezy it means they used physical things, like prosthetics, costumes, camera angles, animatronics, puppetry, fake blood, etc, to achieve the shot.
as opposed to using a computer to do it.
You 2 are my new favorite reactors! Keep it up. Love you guys!
L0L 14:49 best part of the reaction.. Steve: What's your favorite scary movie??
And Nikki looks like she's about to slap him 🤣
I absolutely love when Nikki mentioned the dad joke and she starts laughing, then Steven tries moving on and and Nikki spread her laughter to Steven ugh you guys are honestly the best.
Also Sosie Bacon's performance was fabulous
Fun fact, 90% of all killings by the "Smile Entity" could be avoided if these people learned to close their eyes... It can't traumatize, then cling to you if you don't look at its attempt to scar you
I was thinking that. But then it might be when you're in the presence of the demon you can't look away. We really don't get any rules about how the Curse works in this movie. Gonna guess in the sequel they might address it...
Yeah this isn't Bird Box I don't think not looking is gonna save you. Just because u close ur eyes it's not gonna prevent u from being in the presence of the traumatizing moment u can still hear what's going on and ur still physically there
@@colltav1 yeah but its all about seeing the person dying with a smile on their faces. Even if she could hear it wouldn’t do shit to her tbh.
@@kanaphan7646 yeah ok dude, think what u want.
When I watched this I immediately thought the best thing to do would be to unfortunately sacrifice yourself to end the chain by isolating yourself from everyone (which she tried, but didn't take the necessary measures to prevent being found) and make it quick, if you can't murder someone else, you're dead already, save everyone else from it
The soundtrack by Cristobal Tapia De Veer (of White lotus fame) really does a lot to make the movie more than the sum of its parts.
Hey guys! considering what you guys really enjoyed about this movie, I would highly recommend It Follow (if you guys haven't seen it already - I didn't see a reaction video though). It's definitely a stand-out among movies that use score and camera work to build a ridiculous amount of tension!
I gotta delve into your non-horror stuff too some time :D
You guys have been making my day for years I remember years ago I was in hospital while I think it was stranger things season 4 came out I was in hospital for month and every time you guys dropped a reaction it legit made my week so much better as somone who doesent go out much and would much rather sit in and get comfy with a series it’s so nice to watch along and relate am currently following your last of us reactions so I love watching these other movie an series reactions waiting for the next episode thankyou so much for just Being your awesome selfs you guys are my favourites and I appreciate you both soo ram much looking forward to all the ip and coming videos 😊
Happy birthday Nikki!! I absolutely loved this movie. The ending was the best. I didnt see it coming. I have seen it several times. That smile, i flipping hate it. None of my friends would go with to the movies to see this. So it was me and some stranger. I screamed once and accidentally threw my popcorn. lol
This movie was even spookier in the theater 🫣
I love the way we couldn't trust what the protagonist was seeing after Laura's death (shout out to Caitlin, she's a great actor)
This movie also reminded me of "It Follows"
I was requesting this thank you guys much love
The monster that smiles and end lives. 😂😂😂😂
People aren't a fan of modern horror generally but this was definitely more well done than most!
The soundtrack of this movie was amazing. It really added to the uneasiness of it all.
I watched this in theaters and there was like 4 people that walked out😂. This movie is literally terrifying
Having a shitty day, then I see this....thanks guys 😭👍🏾
Need the distraction ❤️
I saw this movie in theaters, one of my friends was so scared that he left half way through and my other friend bolted out of the theater when it ended
That was PRICELESS!! Happy Birthday 😃
I’m so glad I didn’t see this in theaters 😂 but I enjoyed y’all’s reaction 🤣
Me too. I would have peed myself SO. FUCKING. BAD.
I did, I had my hands covering my eyes so many times lmao
I love you guys mentioning you don't like a happy ending all the time with horror movies. I feel the same way lol
Would love to see you both react to Hereditary. You both handled Sinister so well.
The demon's true form is indeed the most gruesome and horrific thing I have ever seen in a horror movie.
Hearing Steven say Beetlejuice three times cracked me up when he saw the demon's true form lol
@@goofyguy4ever560 crossed with the other mother from Coraline, yeah lol.
I meant after it peels off it's skin.
The opening scene is one of the best ones in a while, the actress with the "first smile"? Iconic performance!
I'd love if Sosi works in a Tremor film with her dad.
I was looking for a reaction of u guys for this one yesterday, lol. Nice to know that Nikki is Aquarian, she's really such an Aquarian haha 🥰
Sosie Bacon blew it out the park with her performance as the main character. Fun Fact: If you didn’t know Sosie Bacon is the daughter of veteran actors Kevin Bacon & Kyra Sedgwick.
The main actress is Kevin Bacon's daughter. Sosie Bacon! =) She's a really good actress!
It made $212 million dollars against a $17 million dollar budget.
29:07 😂😂 yes I felt the same
“What’s your favorite scary movie” had me dying 😂😭😭
Always great when y’all react to horror, next time have a B*tch counter for Nikki😂😂😂
This is the only movie other than Sinister, that scared the hell out of me. Also, happy birthday Nikki!!
Hereditary?
I’ll never recover from Sinister too 🥲
@@Number0neSon haven't seen that one yet. I heard it's wild too. 😬
@@APixieNinja It's a must see.
This movie is a masterpiece. The sounds they use, and the close up camera and camera angles that make you feel uncomfortable
Nikki had a point when she mentioned the movies color because a lot of things in the movie were subconsciously telling you or the characters to be happy and smile, for example the hospital is a shade of pink called Baker-Miller Pink which is a pink that was created and tested in a lot of prisons to reduce violence and make people more “happy”
what do you expect though? people to say "ok youre cursed, lets nip this in the bud," the people didnt know how to deal with the person they love, seemingly going absolutely crazy. i mean her sister put her dead cat in her nephews birthday present. just sayin
"i remember him being faster than that"
BWAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
this movie is exactly like IT FOLLOWS, just a different way of passing it on.
The whole gist of this movie is the unsettling feelings it gives. It was the first horror movie to make me feel like that in a long while.
I just realized that the song playing when they talk about the guy breaking the pattern is the same song from the first Sinister movie. Nice.
Makes you wonder how many of her patients are ACTUALLY crazy??
you guys are so sweet together. you are gonna grow old together. you are lucky youve got eachother :) remember to cherish that.
LOL
The screen said “SMILE”and Nikki and Steven put on perfect frowns!
LOL
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NIKKI!! Make it the best ever! 🥳
Man I’ve never jumped up so much in the theatre before 😂
I SO missed Nikki saying @Biiiaaatch!”😂😂😂 Live you guy’s reaction
I cried during this movie. Ive had severe ocd and the fear and crisis she experiences i can relate to. It's so goddamn scary i just wanted to die. Until i did erp therapy and got medication i got through it.
Great movie that shows how trauma gives trauma to others. The only thin im confused about is that she died in the end. I guess it occured because she ran outside of the house instead of attacking/embracing it.
Overall i was suprised by this movie cause i thought it would suck.
8/10
