The deal with the signs and letters being used as vowels is because the vowels get lost and are the most used. They are making due. Remember they are on an island. I used to work at a movie theater 30 years ago and had to do this as well. Letters get stolen and lost and you were always missing vowels. Honestly it's a brilliant touch.
Bev is attracted to the power, Father Paul is seeking to spread the "word". Bev would have been a Crusader riding to Mecca, Father Paul would have been a missionary going to North Africa. But in this case, both are wrong.. oh so very wrong!
Doubting Thomas would not believe in the resurrection unless he saw Jesus and saw the wounds in his hands and feet, and Riley allows himself to burn up in order to convince Erin that his story is true.
In real Life Bev and the sheriff are dating... I think it's funny that the church is Saint Patrick's, Erin Greene is a parishioner and her home address is 317.. March 17th
I loved your discussion about the differences in how Father Paul and Bev explained the phenomena with Biblical concepts. I didn't spot that contrast when I watched it. Great reactions and commentary!
One tragic detail is that Paul/Pruitt really isn't that fanatic or blinded and seems to have his doubts at times. Like he says in this episode, that he wrestled with the lack of guilt and remorse after Joe's death. Or how he almost seemed helpless and disillusioned last episode after Bev and the others discover him next to Joe's dead body. But of course, Bev Keane is here to steer him into the right direction. To provide the much needed affirmation that all this is still God's plan. Bev is also instrumental in convincing the others to go along with it (remember her slapping the mayor into obedience?). And now in this episode again, she clearly seems to be in a position of power, behind the curtains if you will. While Pruitt has his little chat with Riley, Bev must be running the show and organizing everything. Pruitt wouldn't even be able to do much, if he can't leave the house during daytime. E.g. it was probably Bev's idea to start holding mass at midnight now, or convincing Sturges do be the blood donor (I really don't see Pruitt making that decision and I doubt Sturges would volunteer of his own accord). And she's also clashing with Pruitt a bit, clearly having some different views on how to deal with Riley. But of course, she can't openly deny Pruitt's wishes, because he's still the "chosen one" that brought the miracles to the island. She'll need him...

That's true. You use whatever knowledge you have already to try to understand something new. But, there's no willingness to look at any other probable side to the situation. As if the only knowledge they have about life and the only book they've ever read is the bible. I might be wrong but maybe "cognitive bias" is the phrase I'm looking for.

Do you think in what you were discussing that Father Paul was also seeking validation from Riley, he had given in to temptation and had to have a twisted interpretation by both himself and Bev to justify it and the fact he felt no guilt about Joe and should have maybe he wanted to see if Riley felt anything as he actually had no reference point to go by especially as the " Angel" wasn't someone he could discuss it with.
True. He could be seeking validation. The only thing is, he kept on doubling down when Riley started to reject the idea. Whether he gets validation or not, I don't think anything will shake Father Paul out if this lunacy.
Yes you're right. I think in a way he couldn't understand how Riley could resist the blessing he thought he had been given but for all his sins and struggles with faith Riley was closer to a truer interpretation of being Christian than the twisted version of Father Paul and Bev and their followers.
In my head cannon, in this world the story of Jesus is literal. A literal vampire story worded in a reverent way. So I want to see a prequel where Jesus is a vampire (turned by the “angel”) and who turns Lazarus.
I’ve seen that Bev actress in other roles and even when she’s playing somebody nice or whom we’re supposed to like…all I see is Bev. And I hate the even likable character she is playing! Which I suppose is a testament to her excellence. The young girl Riley sees in the boat is the girl he killed in his DUI accident. A final moment of grace. It seems folks in the show’s universe had never heard of vampires. Sort of like nobody knew of or ever says zombies in The Walking Dead.
That wasn't Erin in the boat as a younger person that was the girl that he hit with the car
Forgiveness for himself in his last moment. ❤
A selfless sacrifice that finally cures him of the guilt he felt all this time since the accident.
Ooooohhh. OK that makes more sense.

Ahh ok. I thought it was a really deep metaphor where we had to solve a puzzle as to why they're missing, but it's just......life.

This is a universe where no one has heard of vampires.
You mean angels, right!?

Its such a good episode but horrific. Poor Erin sat in that boat, the screaming/crying over the credits was a brutal touch.
Gut wrenching credits.

Another great episode, another great view/review. I hope you are strapped in for the rest of the series!
