HI Cathy. Thanks for your videos on MOXF. I have a MOXF6 but your tips apply for MOXF6 also! Keep posting these videos because there are not many people that post for the MOXF and you do it in plain "English". So keep on your good work!! I appreciate them very much!
Thank you Cathy T for your how to videos demonstrations, this is something I needed to get started. Not enough resources out there that demonstrates the way you have. As you learn and teach, I'll learn from you. Great unselfish teacher you are. Thanks again. As I was learning from your video a thought came to mind...how do you loop (measure(s)/track(s)?
To loop a single measure in "song mode" you hit F3 then select the track you want. Use the "data" wheel to change it from off to on. If you want to loop multiple measures, use Pattern Mode and while in the F1 screen, select how many measures you want your pattern to be. It will automatically loop those measures because you are in pattern mode.
Cathy, thank you soo much for the videos! I have had a MOXF 6 for 5 years and have not been able to do what I wanted to do with it until your videos! I do have one final hurdle I am trying to overcome and hope you can help me. I have a harmonizer that I have had for 20 + years and used it with a Yamaha V50. I do not use a DAW but just plug it in through MIDI cables. I have been trying to figure out how to do this (send signals) through the MOXF6 through experimentation and manuals for the keyboard. Do you know what steps need to be taken to do this? Hooking it up is no problem, it is sending command signals that has me stumped. I realize this is more of a personal tutorial so I would be more than happy to pay you for your time and expertise. Either way thanks again for all the help !
I am afraid that I don't know how to do what you are asking. Try this phone number and I think you will get a technician who can answer your question. (714) 522-9000. I had good luck with this number in the past. Please note that I am going to take down this number in 24 hours.
Thanks for your videos, Cathy. I would like to add a short drum fill before the chorus. I would like to use it in different areas. How can I save the fill to a button, so I can use it at anytime ? Thanks for any help.
This might be hard to explain but I think it will work for you. I am assuming you are playing along live with the pre-recorded drum loops, right? But perhaps you haven't found a fill bthat you like, or you have one that isn't offered as one of the arpeggiation options for the drum voice you have chosen. So here goes. Try this: 1) hit voice 2) hit drum assign (rh upper side of keyboard) 3) press the category search button and dial down to choose the drum voice you like 4) make sure the Arp button is "on" 5) press a key in the lower part of the keyboard to listen to the drum 6) press the different SF1, SF2, SF3, etc. buttons to hear the different arpeggiations 7) THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART: Arp 6 (SF6) is usually an empty slot. When you press SF6 nothing will happen. So what you want to do is assign Arp6 the new fill that you love. 8) PressF5 (Arp Edit) then press F2 (Type) 9) Dial up the Bank, Category, Subcategory, type, etc. until you get the fill you want. Listen to what is already there in the keyboard under the "Pre" Bank. For Category try DrPc. Then for Subcategory use Rock, or Ballad or whatever you want. Then under TYPE keep dialing up different numbers to hear what is available on the keyboard. (Be sure Arp is set to "on" so you can hear the drum loops.) If you have created your own fill, hopefully you have saved it as a user voice and you can dial it up here. 10) BE SURE TO Press Arp 6. You are now assigning that new fill to Arp6 (the SF6 button). Now you have that fill available to you on the SF6 button. 11). Now hit "PERFORMANCE" to go to the main screen (F1) and play along with your drum arpeggios. Fiddling around right now on my keyboard, I think this will work for you. You just have to try different things. Please watch all of my videos and you may find ways to do this that make more sense to you. Maybe you could create a new "performance" with the fill you like and save it as a user voice (watch my video about user voices). You can then give it a permanent easy access button by using Master Mode. (Please watch my video about Master Mode.). Hope this isn't too confusing or crazy.
@@cathyt6773 Thanks so much Cathy, I'll give this a try. And thanks for breaking this down step by step, since I'm a newbie! I'll get back to you with my results. You're the best !
Hi Cathy and thanks for your fantastic help; do you know if and how is possible to load a predefined drum pattern (the ones that are being used in the performances) into a song without the need to record it from the scratch? thanks in advance
If you are on a particular performance that has drums that you like, hit F2 (under the display window) and you will see the list of voices used in that performance. Find the drum voice(s). Then, using your arrow keys and data wheel, unselect the other instruments, leaving just the drums selected (see the little "x" to the left of each voice - - using the dial you can toggle them on or off). Now you should just hear the drums that you like. Be sure to play a key in the lower part of the keyboard to initiate the drums. Now hit the record button and at the top of the display screen you will see SeqMode. Be sure to dial up "song" mode and then underneath that is "Number." Be sure that it is song number that you want it to be. Then hit play and start recording the drum pattern. After you are finished, go to that particular song number and the drums will be there. The other instruments in the original performance that you toggled off may show up on the other tracks of your song, but you can reassign those tracks to other instruments that you want. There won't be any music recorded on those tracks, but they will be assigned the instruments that originally came with that performance. Watch this video and it might help a little. studio.ruclips.net/user/videonyuc_hB3lKk/edit Be sure to record the drums first. If you have already recorded something else on tracks other than 1-4 (those are where the drums will show up), and then try to go to Performance mode, you will lose what you have recorded. Always record drums first!!!!
Cathy- hey thanks so much for this very informative video. Always enjoy your videos on the Moxf8! I noticed that you were not in sync with the internal clock of the keyboard. This may not normally be a problem but it might be if you were exporting the sequence to a computer for further editing. Just my 2 cents
Ok when you started recording your drum pattern into your sequencer- your metronome (Click) was going one tempo and the drums were at a Different tempo.. Ideally they should be the Same. I'm learning too! This instrument has been a Beast for me to learn, and I've been computer recording since the late 90's. So...there has to be a way to Sync/slave the tempo of the sequencer to the internal Clock of the MOXF8.. I will have more time later this weekend to explore this subject and share my findings with you. Then again it may not matter at all!
Yeah, I hear what you are saying. The metronome is the same speed, just a little out of sync with the drums. I haven't had problems when I have exported to the computer in the past. The bigger problem I occasionally run into is latency issues when exporting to the computer.
hi cathy! you had mentioned in a response back to me that you were using a roland kc550 amp. are you running directly into it from the MOXF or going through a mixer or pre-amp or ??? i was thinking maybe i should get a larger amp and was wondering what your set up was like. thanks! have a great day!
Actually, this is my set up in my office: My MOXF8 is plugged into a Focusrite audio interface unit (made by Scarlett 2i4) which is plugged into my iMac computer. I have two Rokit 5 powered speakers plugged into the back of my audio interface unit and when I go to my computer preferences, under "audio" I select "Scarlett 2i4 USB" for my sound output. So my computer sound comes through the Rokit speakers, but so does my keyboard. I usually only use my Roland amp for gigs outside of my home. (It's kind of big.) If you just have a home studio, the Rokit 5 speakers are probably great for you, but if you play outside of your home, I would invest in a good keyboard amp. When I use the Roland, I just go straight into it from the keyboard. No pre-amp or mixer. You can mix a little on the amp itself. Hope this helps.
