Hey Cathy, love you tutorials. I have a Yamaha Mox8 (same as moxf8 layout) and I'm having a terrible time trying to connect it to a DAW program via USB MIDI. Tried GarageBand and FL STudio on a MacBook but neither can see the Yamaha. Would be great if you could have a look at this sometime.
From the back of my MOXF8 keyboard I have two 1/4" jack cables coming out of the keyboard where it says "output" and into the front of a Focusrite (Scarlett) interface unit. I also have a midi cable coming out of the "midi out" hole in the back of the keyboard and into the back of the Focusrite interface unit where it says "midi in." Then I have a cable from the back of my Focusrite into my computer. I have two speakers connected to the back of the Focusrite. Everything works great. If you haven't tried using an interface box you should buy one. Approximate cost $150.
@@cathyt6773 Yes I understand, thank you. I also have a similar setup. Focusrite Scarlet 8i6 audio out to a mixer/monitors and USB out to Apple Macbook Pro and that works fine for recording analogue audio from the MOX8, however I would also like to use the MOX8 as a MIDI controller via its USB interface rather than the 5-pin din MIDI interface and this is where I'm having problems. I do believe it is possible to do this but I have yet to figure it out.
How do you micro tune, as in tuning individual notes? I have found that it’s possible but I’ve been looking for a long time and haven’t been able how to do it.
Hi Cathy. Is there a global EQ for the MOXF? I find all the sounds a bit muffled, and I'm always turning up the hi eq. I'd like to save the eq setting so it applies to all the sounds in the keyboard.
Great video, 👍🏻 As I’m not a great keyboard player, I often need several attempts to get it right, when recording a loop, is there a way to undo what you’ve just recorded so you can start from fresh TIA
Yes. While in pattern mode, hit the “job” button, then hit the F1 key (found under the display window). It will ask if you want to undo what you just did. Hit “Enter (yes). Works the same in song mode.
Did you have to make adjustments on the concert grant piano sound like adding eq, reverb, chorus? my concert grand sounds more electronic than acoustic
Hi Cathy I,m losing sounds on my yamaha moxf 61 note synth! I know it,s a few years old but I would like to save it! It,s like and ole friend, got any thoughts that may help!...signed Jerry S.
cathy, do you know that you can increase the volume slightly on these keyboards (the output volume) by changing the "velocity" setting to easy or something like that. the output on this keyboard is only 6dB so it lacks punch on the pianos and electric pianos. you can also set the master volume to 127 and each voice volume to 127. that really helped me to hear what i was playing much better. i just bought the brand new Yamaha MODX 6 and they now have a 12 dB output gain setting - and it really makes all the difference in the world. i am selling my MOXF8 and keeping the MODX 6. good luck!
Thanks, Frank. I use pretty good speakers and my keyboard amp is a Roland KC550 so I always have plenty of sound on all of my voices. But this is good to know!!!
Cathy-when I follow your instructions to default to Piano and turn the machine off and restart, it does not store the new information. It also will not store new voices in the A1,A2,A3, etc. positions. What do I need to do to have it store? The Zone is "OFF" if that is important to save changes?
Hmmm. Not sure why not. After you change the default to Piano, you have to remember to hit "store" and the default should store the new information. Make sure you follow all of the steps in the video . . . ????
I use a USB thumb drive or memory stick to save songs or patterns. I have used several different USB sticks and they have all worked fine. Please watch this video to find out how to save "voices" or "performances". Be sure to watch it to the end. ruclips.net/video/umphX6WZN88/видео.html
this is just want I needed to get started. my only concern is that the camera keeps sweeping back and forth and shaking, and by half way through I was actually feeling a bit sea-sick and had to stop for a while.
Sorry, Steve! I was holding my phone camera in one hand and trying to push the buttons with the other and it was tricky. I just wanted to get the information out there for everyone. Good luck. Don't hesitate to leave questions (as comments) if you have some and I will try to answer.
There's actually ways to edit each string instrument to make it sound more real. I have a moxf8 and have 3 songs on my new channel that shows what this keyboard is capable of. Check it out!
hi, hope u r doing fine I have a question about my moFX8 Everytime i am on a favorite sound, it changes to the song Mode I have ti change it back again and again In the middle of a service What could be the reason? Please i am waiting for your help
I'm a little confused by your question. What mode do you usually play in? Performance Mode? Just "Voice" mode? "Pattern Mode?" You need to watch this video: ruclips.net/video/OMt0quO8O-Y/видео.html. It will teach you how to set up the voices you use frequently (favorites) but in a way that is better for you than using the Favorite Button. I would think that for your service, you probably are changing from organ, then maybe to piano with strings, electric piano, and maybe to big string sounds, etc. Some of the voices I just mentioned are "layered" voices that you would find by pushing the Category Search button in Performance Mode. Others are voices you find by simply pushing "Voice" then Category Search. If you set up the different sounds/voices that you will be using in Master Mode, you should be good to go for your service. When you push the numbered keys to the right of the keyboard while in Master Mode, the keyboard will change to the different modes automatically depending on the voice you assigned each button. When you push a new numbered button for a new voice, it will change back to "Voice" Mode or whatever mode. . . Of course, the Master Mode button will remain on for all the different voices you set up while you are working in Master Mode. Just watch the video link I provided. Hopefully, it will help you a lot!!!
Cathy, thank you so much, BUT I am having trouble with my SUSTAIN Pedal not working. I have a "M Gear" pedal but i put it in the "assignable sustain pedal" jack in the back but it is either completely on or off. So if i step on it , it stays on. How can I set this up?
Cathy, this was some instructions I got but it didn't work: If a sustain pedal plugged into a Yamaha keyboard is producing the opposite effect - sustaining when the pedal is not depressed, and not sustaining when it is depressed - it's usually because (a) the pedal was plugged in while the keyboard was turned on, or (b) the pedal was depressed while the unit was powering on. This tricks the keyboard into thinking the default state of the pedal is depressed, resulting in a reverse polarity or reverse function. There's an easy way to remedy this: 1) With the unit turned on and the sustain pedal plugged in, depress and hold the sustain pedal while you power the unit off. 2) Release the sustain pedal once the unit has been turned off. 3) Turn the unit back on.
I have an MGear Pedal, too. I have it plugged into "Foot Switch Sustain" (not the assignable jack) on my MOXF8. If it works backwards, i.e. sustains when you are not pressing and cuts the sound when you press it, you need to pick up the pedal, turn it over and look on the bottom for a little black switch. Flip that switch to the other position (mine is in position 2) and that should take care of the problem permanently.
I wish there were some simple country beats, but there aren’t. You will have to create your own in Pattern mode. It shouldn’t be too hard. Some of my other videos should help you figure this out.
Press the [UTILITY] button. Press the [JOB] button. Press the [ENTER] button. A confirmation prompt will appear in the display. Press the [INC/YES] button to execute the reset. ... Press the [EXIT] button twice to return to the previous mode.
How to i do a factory reset? Im not a keyboard player but bought this keyboard for our church last 2017 and now i notice that when the keyboard is turned on, somehow it doesn't sound like the full concert piano before so i'm thinking someone might have made adjustments on the keys.
Sorry to be so late in responding. You have probably already figured this out. It is very simple. Hit the "Utility" then the "Job" button then hit enter. If there are any saved songs that you or anyone has created on the keyboard, you will lose them, but that probably doesn't matter to you.
You might have been in a different window that doesn't allow you to go to Category Search. Make sure you initiate the pressing of the "Category" button from 'Song Mode" or "Pattern Mode" or "Voice", etc. Then you need to hit category search twice to get it to open the list of instruments. See if that helps.

Hit "Pattern" and then be sure to hit F1 (button underneath the left side the display screen). On the display screen on the right-hand side you will see 001 : 01/004. What this means is that you are all set to record in measure 1 (that's the first number). The 004 number tells you that your pattern will only be 4 measures long. Using your arrow buttons (on the RH side of the keyboard near the center) navigate to that number "4" and dial up a higher number if you want your pattern to be longer.
@@cathyt6773 Hi thnx for your response. I think I tried that. Seems like I tried everything. I’ll give it a shot and follow your instructions to the letter. Appreciate the info!
@@cathyt6773 Hi. Got the length figured out. Thnx. Hey once the patterns are done is there a way to put them in a song without recording them manually? Meaning is there a step mode that they can be chained together? Thnx again. You know as old as this keyboard is it still sounds great and the sequencer is still quite useful. I use this keyboard in church. I’ve got so many newer ones ( Nords, Korg, kurzweil (etc) and for most gigs I still grab either my moxf8 or 6. Thnx again for your help.
Let's say you have just recorded a pattern on "section A" and another pattern on "section B". The "sections" I am referring to are the letters just to the right of the pattern number and name on the display screen. If you watch my video "How to Record a Pattern" you will see how to use the sections as you record different patterns. Then you need to hit the F6 button from the main Pattern screen (F1 screen). After you hit "chain" then hit the record button on your keyboard. Be sure that you are on the section letter that you want to record first. Hit record and record the different patterns you created by using the 16 numbered buttons on the RH side of your keyboard to move between sections. After you have recorded, or "chained" the sections together, then hit the Edit button and then hit F3 ("Song"). Tell it which song number you want to send it to and then hit enter. Your pattern chain will now be in song mode at the number that you told it to go to. Now you can edit it and do whatever you want with it in song mode. If this seems complicated, maybe you will pick up some tips by watching the following video. ruclips.net/video/bm_kJPlgCJ8/видео.html
@@cathyt6773 Hi thnx again. I did that and understood from your first video how to chain and covert into a song. The problem I had was I had a measure that was so short that it was playing twice. I tried changing into the next pattern and in recording chain mode (in real time) it wouldn’t work. When I took it out of chain mode it would. Odd to me. Anyway this is why I asked if there was a “step chain” mode where the patterns could be strung together in the proper order step by step. I do this with my alesis drum machine. I compose the patters then go into step mode and put them in order. Again your information is quite useful, clear and concise and very much appreciated. God Bless.
Delete what? If you have just recorded something and you want to delete what you recorded and do it over, you hit "job", then F1 ("Undo"), then hit "Enter." To delete an entire song or pattern, you can go to the "job" button, then hit "song" (F6) and then go to "clear song" and hit "enter." Or to clear just one track, you can hit "job" then "track" then "clear track" etc. etc. If you want to just delete a note or two, go to the main "song" or "pattern" screen then hit the "edit" button. Make sure you are on the track that contains the notes you want to change or delete. When you hit edit, you will see a list of every recorded event - - each note, etc. Using your arrow keys move to the note you want to delete (or change) and then hit F6 ("Delete). If you want to just change the actual note, you must move your curser (using the arrow keys) to the letter name of the note on the screen and then re-play the note you want it to be. Then hit "enter."
After you make a recording, are you hitting "Store"? That should save what you have just recorded and when you turn your keyboard off, it should still be saved. Please watch my video "How to record a song, name it and Save it" if you don't know how to save your song recordings.
This is what I would do: Hook up your keyboard to your computer, and hit play and record your song into Garage Band or some other similar program (Logic, etc.). Then save it there as an mp3. Then you can email the mp3 to yourself or someone else so you have the recording on your phone for the talent show. I do this all of the time. You can't create an mp3 on the MOXF8 itself. You can save the data from your song onto a usb flash drive for future use on the keyboard, but it won't play the song independent of your keyboard.
Got done reason your videos won't play all the way thru. Anybody else having that problem? I really need to learn this keyboard and it's overwhelming for me?:-(
I just watched it all the way through without any problem. Not sure what's happening on your computer. Maybe try watching on a different device. Let me know if you have any questions I can help you with.

Thank you Cathy
How do you micro tune, as in tuning individual notes? I have found that it’s possible but I’ve been looking for a long time and haven’t been able how to do it.
Thank you so much. I found your video very helpful. :)
Hi Cathy. Is there a global EQ for the MOXF? I find all the sounds a bit muffled, and I'm always turning up the hi eq. I'd like to save the eq setting so it applies to all the sounds in the keyboard.
I just did a quick Google search and found this: motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/480668. It might help. I played around with it a bit . . .
Cathy T Thank you so much, you’re a star!! 😀
Did you have to make adjustments on the concert grant piano sound like adding eq, reverb, chorus? my concert grand sounds more electronic than acoustic
I haven't made adjustments, but sometimes I try different acoustic pianos - - Romantic Piano, Full Concert Grand, etc.
Just subscribed. Thanks and God bless
Hi Cathy I,m losing sounds on my yamaha moxf 61 note synth! I know it,s a few years old but I would like to save it! It,s like and ole friend, got any thoughts that may help!...signed Jerry S.
Very helpful! Thank you!
I’m trying to connect my iPad to the keyboard via usb but I’m not getting any sound. Any suggestions???
Cathy. how to change individual octave in a single voice out of the 4 in layers
cathy, do you know that you can increase the volume slightly on these keyboards (the output volume) by changing the "velocity" setting to easy or something like that. the output on this keyboard is only 6dB so it lacks punch on the pianos and electric pianos. you can also set the master volume to 127 and each voice volume to 127. that really helped me to hear what i was playing much better. i just bought the brand new Yamaha MODX 6 and they now have a 12 dB output gain setting - and it really makes all the difference in the world. i am selling my MOXF8 and keeping the MODX 6. good luck!
Thanks, Frank. I use pretty good speakers and my keyboard amp is a Roland KC550 so I always have plenty of sound on all of my voices. But this is good to know!!!
wow! that's a big speaker and heavy too!
Thank you a lot
Cathy-when I follow your instructions to default to Piano and turn the machine off and restart, it does not store the new information. It also will not store new voices in the A1,A2,A3, etc. positions. What do I need to do to have it store? The Zone is "OFF" if that is important to save changes?
Hmmm. Not sure why not. After you change the default to Piano, you have to remember to hit "store" and the default should store the new information. Make sure you follow all of the steps in the video . . . ????
Hola cathy, hace unos dias huce esa configuración, pero ahora ya no puedo hacerla, porque no se 😅
HI CATHY-WHAT USB THUMB DRIVE OR MEMORY STICK IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE
MOXF8 & HOW DO YOU BACK UP THE VOICES, PERFORMANCES ETC THAT YOU CREATE
I use a USB thumb drive or memory stick to save songs or patterns. I have used several different USB sticks and they have all worked fine. Please watch this video to find out how to save "voices" or "performances". Be sure to watch it to the end. ruclips.net/video/umphX6WZN88/видео.html
Cathy T Thanks👍
Cathy T Thank You!! 👍👍
this is just want I needed to get started. my only concern is that the camera keeps sweeping back and forth and shaking, and by half way through I was actually feeling a bit sea-sick and had to stop for a while.
Check it out!
hi, hope u r doing fine
I have a question about my moFX8
Everytime i am on a favorite sound, it changes to the song Mode
I have ti change it back again and again
In the middle of a service
What could be the reason?
There's an easy way to remedy this:
1) With the unit turned on and the sustain pedal plugged in, depress and hold the sustain pedal while you power the unit off.
@@cathyt6773 That worked instantly! Thank you!
Cathy, thanks so much. But, how does it sound? :(
Watch my other videos!
Cathy is there any 3/4 time straight country beats that I can use on this keyboard Can I change the time signature
I wish there were some simple country beats, but there aren’t. You will have to create your own in Pattern mode. It shouldn’t be too hard. Some of my other videos should help you figure this out.
Do u still have this board
I wish i could find this video sooner
When you have time can you tell me how to factory reset my Yamaha moxf8. Thankyou, I m not getting any sound from my Yamaha moxf8 and don't know why
Please when I hit on the category button , the list of tones don’t show anymore , how can I reset it ?
You might have been in a different window that doesn't allow you to go to Category Search. Make sure you initiate the pressing of the "Category" button from 'Song Mode" or "Pattern Mode" or "Voice", etc. Then you need to hit category search twice to get it to open the list of instruments. See if that helps.

Hey. How do you change the length of a pattern? Couldn’t find how to do it. Thnx.
@@cathyt6773
Hi thnx for your response. I think I tried that. Seems like I tried everything. I’ll give it a shot and follow your instructions to the letter. Appreciate the info!
@@cathyt6773
Hi.
@@cathyt6773
Hi thnx again.
God Bless.
I followed steps to change opening to a piano setting... turned off/back on,but keeps returning to "mo xpressive" setting. Help!!
Maybe try hitting "store" before you turn off your keyboard.
Thank you.how do you delete it? If you don’t like it.
@@cathyt6773 Thank you Ms. Cathy, I was able to figure it out. I really hope you continue these videos they are so amazing :)
Hi....I have a problem..... every turn on....say: Factory Set.....please.... my MoXF8 not save my layers...Thnks
After you make a recording, are you hitting "Store"? That should save what you have just recorded and when you turn your keyboard off, it should still be saved. Please watch my video "How to record a song, name it and Save it" if you don't know how to save your song recordings.
@@cathyt6773 Hi......yes!!!! I hitting ''Store'' but nothing :,(
La Popa Centro Evangelistico Watch the video I recommended. You should save on a flash drive. The video will show you how.

How i can do fabric reset in my Moxf8?
Sorry to be so late in replying. Go to Song Mode then hit Utility then hit Job and then hit Enter to do a Factory Reset.
Hi....thank you for this video! I have a song that I need to export to usb flash drive then reformat to MP3 for a talent show.
