How to Undo or "Punch In" on MOXF8
In this video I explain how to use "undo," "edit," or "punch in" to erase or replace a specific measure in a recorded song on the Yamaha MOXF8 keyboard. I also show how to fix sustaining pedal "hold-overs" when you are editing a piano track where sustaining pedal was used. For quick access to the information within the video: At 2:21 I explain how to delete recorded material using "edit." At 3:58 I explain the "punch" method for replacing or re-recording a measure. At 6:25 I talk about sustaining pedal problems you may encounter when deleting a measure in which sustaining pedal was used.

Do u still have this board
I just bought one of these workstations and although your instructions are nice i cant figure it out even with pnline manual. HELP
Watch my Getting Started video.
Whats the difference between recording a song and a pattern? It looks like the same thing to me...
Watch my How to Record a Song video and you will see the difference. Much is the same but patterns are loops the keep repeating. Songs are one continuous recording.
@cathyt6773 so the songs cannot be looped?
@@xxJP805xx I just did the following, which you might like to try. I recorded a four measure song - piano on one track, bass on another track and guitar on another track. Then I hit JOB then F6 (Song - button under the screen). Then go to "Split Song to Pattern". Hit enter. Now dial up the measures that you want to loop. I dialed up measures 001 - 004 (4 measures). Then you will see PATTERN on the screen. Choose a pattern number that you know is available (has no previous data recorded on it). I chose and dialed up pattern 33. Then hit ENTER. You have just send your song over to PATTERN mode. Now go into PATTERN mode and go to the pattern number that you chose to send your song to. If you hit play, the song will be there - - all of the tracks with the right voices will be there. HOWEVER, on my keyboard when I go to Pattern mode, the default length of a pattern is 4 measures. If your song is longer than 4 measures, you will need to dial up the number of measures that it is (on the RH side of the main screen for pattern mode - - it will look like this: 001:01/004 - - if your song is 100 measures dial up 001:01/100).. Now the song will keep repeating because you have created one big pattern. Does that make sense? It is really simple to do this. There might be another way to loop a song, but I don't know how to do it.
@cathyt6773 thank you so much. Yes it does make sense. My other question is, Are you able to use layered sounds to play with along with your pattern or can you only use one voice at a time? Please help, thanks. :)
Thank you so much
Hi Cathy. Thank you for all these training videos. They are super helpful and thankfully I don't have to read the entire manual. Hope you'll make more vids.
Thank you years later and this video is still my go too
Nice! Thank you! ❤
thanksss
very cool tips! Thanks, Cathy!

Search for this
Hola cathy, hace unos dias huce esa configuración, pero ahora ya no puedo hacerla, porque no se 😅
Hero cathy
Question, how did you move the perfomance tks 1-4 to 13-16? Somehow copy? Thanks !
If you are just moving data from certain measures on one track to other measures on the same track. . . you could do it this way: Go to your "song" (or pattern) and hit F1 (under the display window) to be sure to be in the main (or "play") screen. Then hit "Job" (to the lower right of the data wheel on my keyboard). Then hit F3 ("Event"). Then select "Copy Event". Select the track and the measure numbers you want to copy (so you can move them). Then dial up the measures you want the track data to shift to. Then hit Enter. You will have to manually go back and erase the data from the original measures - - if you need to get rid of it. (You can record in "replace" mode to do this.) If you want to copy and paste (which is kind of what you are doing) ALL of the tracks, then, follow the steps above but when you select the track number, using your data wheel, spin it around until it says "all". Then it will shift the data from all of the tracks (from the measures you selected) to the new location. Of course, you will still have to go back and erase the measures where you "don't" want the material - - track by track. This is kind of a ghetto way to do it, but it works! I don't know any other way to do it
@@cathyt6773 Thanks Cat. I just bought me another MOXF61 (had one years ago) and just need some more good Motif sounds. Believe it or not, I have the big brother Motif XS6. But theres something about this lightweight plasticky MOXF that I like lol !
This is great stuff , you are the moxf sequencer queen ! 😊
This is an excellent and practical tutorial on recording patterns on the MOXF, thanks Cathy !

The arpegiated voice I'm trying to use is from the Music Fx category in voice mode
Hi Cathy. I'm having trouble recording arpegiated voices. The voice categories in performance mode are different from the voice mode options. The only way to record the arpegiated voice that I want to use is to record to an external device in real time. This means the arpegiated voice data from my mox8 cant be recorded internally in a song or pattern. Do you have any recommendations for how to record the arpegiated voice from the voice mode internally into the song or pattern ?
Try the following: Go to song mode and choose an available "song" number. Go to the track that you want to record on and then hit the "Rec" button, but don't start recording. While you are in the "Rec" window hit F2 (Voice). Now where it says "Voice" dial up the voice you want. Make sure your Arp on/off button is lighted (in the on position). You might have to also hit F3 to turn the Switch to "on". Now try recording and see if you are successful. I'm not sure what arpeggiations you are trying to record . . . It will now be recorded on a track in your song. For drums, please watch my two videos about how to record the on board drum loops (arpeggiations).
Thank you for your excellent videos. They are so helpful and appreciated.
So helpful❤ thanks so much for this
Great!!! Thank you!
Awesome!!!!!!! Now can you play 2 instruments at the same time?
Yes. You can layer (hit Voice and choose a voice and then hit Layer and choose your second instrument) and play two instruments, like piano and strings, at the same time. If you want to play one instrument in the bass and another in the treble, then you need to split the keyboard. Hit voice then hit split. You can set the split point by using your arrow keys and go down (in the "split" screen) to where it says "splitpoint" and assign a new point. If you want to have more than two regions on your keyboard, in other words, have part of your keyboard set for flute, another set for bass, another set for piano, you need to watch my video about setting up four regions.

Very useful tip!
Thx you Ma'am. Very fascinating piece of equipment from Yamaha - Mox8
Hello Cathy. I've have created a Pattern that I want to play behind another voice that I want to play in realtime. But, when I hold the sustain pedal down for the real-time voice, the pedal is also sustaining notes that the Pattern is playing and causing the Pattern-notes to be all smeared-and-garbled. Also, when I use the Pitch Wheel or Modulation Wheel, they both effect the Pattern notes. How do make the sustain-pedal not sustain the Pattern notes and the PitchWheel and Mod Wheel not effect the Pattern notes? Thank you
When you play in real-time, make sure you are on a separate track - - one that you haven't already recorded on. Then you can be free to use the sustaining pedal without affecting pre-recorded material on the other tracks.
Did you have to make adjustments on the concert grant piano sound like adding eq, reverb, chorus? my concert grand sounds more electronic than acoustic
I haven't made adjustments, but sometimes I try different acoustic pianos - - Romantic Piano, Full Concert Grand, etc.
I hope you are still monitoring your youtube account. I have seen a lot of videos for this keyboard but yours are the most informative and the video file is clear and easy to see. I'm assuming that you are a professional musician but if you're not, you should be. Thank you.
Thank you for your comment. I'm glad the videos are helpful. I have had two different Yamaha Motif keyboards starting in 2004. I am self taught and have figured out a lot on the keyboard, but there is much that I still don't know. It was at first so if I can help others with their struggles, I am happy. I recently retired from a college where I was the full-time staff accompanist but where I also did a lot of composing and arranging for both the choir and the orchestra. I have used the keyboard to make demo recordings of my orchestrations, to make soundtrack recordings for the theater department and local community theaters, to play different instruments live in the orchestra (like harp parts, some bell parts, celeste parts, piano parts, etc.), as a midi keyboard for my work in Sibelius (music notation software), theater pit orchestra playing, etc., etc.
Hello Cathy, Thank you for these wonderful tutorial videos. I need help please! I would like to be able to transform my MOXF8 into an arranger keyboard using an auto-accompaniment software such as One Man Band 12 (OMB). So that, whenever I play the chords or melody on MOXF8, it would trigger/control the standard Style files from OMB software. I followed the instructions but could not get it to work as described above. Please help! FYI. 1manband (OMB) provides a free demo software download for testing out the system setup.
Hi Cathy, thank you for your precious video! Do the system memorize the transpose or the octave too?
I haven't tried that, but I would assume if you record a song and save it, that those functions would be saved with the song. Try it out and see what happens!! If you need help saving a song, watch my video ruclips.net/video/lrN4qbOqF-k/видео.html and go to 10:19 in the video to see how to save it onto a USB drive.
How i can do fabric reset in my Moxf8?
Sorry to be so late in replying. Go to Song Mode then hit Utility then hit Job and then hit Enter to do a Factory Reset.
Thanks!!! You are a good teacher!!
You are welcome!
You were pushing some buttons to listen to recording. How does one hear what is recorded?
You have to be plugged into a powered speaker or use headphones. The keyboard doesn't have built in speakers.
Thank you
Still a very good tutorial, even though many Yamahas have touchscreens now. Thank you.
This is sooo helpful! I just have one problem with voice settings being different after I've saved them on the numbers buttons. I have been able to edit most of these, like reverb, however sometimes a voice's CHO PRESET is different and I don't get the same value choices after saving to a track number. For specific example, I tried to save Dual Coil Blue Lead (PRE2 124/H12) which has a factory setting for CHO PRESET of "ChoPre 4 Beat Ec", but that is not available after storing and the voice sounds totally different. Any suggestions for how to preserve that setting when saving it like this?
Yeah….watch my video “Yamaha MOXF8 How to Use Master Mode.” This is a better way to save voices you need to switch between because you will not lose quality of sound, if that is a problem.
However, the transition between voices in master mode is not a seamless.
