  • It might not look that strange at first, but this 1958 Gibson Les Paul Custom is likely to be the only one of its kind that you've ever seen (it's the only one I've seen in person!). Did you spot the anomaly? When Gibson updated the Les Paul Custom model in 1957 to the new humbucking pickups, they skipped over the simple two pickup version like the Standard and went straight to three humbucking pickups. But this caused a slight problem for some players: where does the pick go if there is a big PAF humbucker in the way?! Not only that, but Gibson in all its wisdom decided that the middle position should be out of phase with no way to control the amount of phase cancelation.

    When I first saw a picture of this vintage guitar, I knew exactly what it was: one of maybe 20 examples to the two pickup variety of the Gibson Les Paul Custom single cut made between 1957 and 1961. Since the shipment ledgers are missing from that time period, we don't know for sure exactly how many Gibson Les Paul Custom guitars were made with only two pickups instead of three. This is one of those and it's a very fine example as well!

      To me black tops are Gibson. Interestingly the first instrument in the Gibson Archive is a black top Harp Guitar, SN 2502, Possibly the second instrument as it is believed that Gibson SN's started at 2500 in 1902. Sunbursts came a few years later.

    It was because Strats had 3 pickups.
    I wish more demos included turning down the guitar volume. The tone changes completely.

      @truevintageguitar  3 месяца назад

      Yes it's very possible that the three pickups configuration was in response to the Strat 👍

    My ‘58 LP Custom (# 8 2020) was the best guitar that I ever played, in all respects.
    But I resold it, for the very reasons explained in your video

    My grandfather had a 1959 les paul custom he purchased new in 1959, it was stolen in Mpls in the 70s, i think about it everyday, wonder where it is, would really be great to track it down, but i cant verify the seriel number because gibsons log books for 59 are missing..😢thanks for this video it was a great watch!

    Hi John,Does that 58 custom have a maple or mahogany top ? Just curious !

    • @RiggsTaylor
      @RiggsTaylor 2 месяца назад

      Mahogany! That’s the only thing (other than color) that makes this different from a Burst of the same era.

    Gibson had produced several upper end models (archtop hollowbody) that had 3 pickups. Naturally, they did the same for the custom.

    I have zero knowledge on this subject but it wouldn't surprise me to hear that many of the two pickup black LP's had maple tops. It seems likely to me that a special order for one could easily be filled by taking a poorly figured maple toped guitar from the 'Burst' production line pre finish?

    • @truevintageguitar
      @truevintageguitar  3 месяца назад

      Yes I agree! And this one one of the first things I checked for when I finally got to inspect this guitar out in the desert in New Mexico. This one does not have a Maple cap. I've seen plenty of all Mahogany late 50s goldtops, but I've yet to see a Maple cap late 50s Custom. I'm sure it's out there though!

      I have had a 59 2 pickup LPC, it was a bit if an enigma though with some anomalies that didn't quite add up. No rear binding, front binding wasn't the normal number of layers, neck had been slimmed down and refinished. The headstock tapered which would seem to indicate earlier than 59. Had waffle back tuners which until I saw this one had only seen on the late 60s LPC. It was definitely all mahogany, PAFs were kosher and it was hands down the best sounding guitar I have ever owned. I bought the guitar around 2001ish and I remember seeing another for sale in the UK just a couple of months later. I paid £3000 for mine and the second one was advertised at a similar price!!
      I did take it to a couple of well known shops to get there opinion, one said it was definitely legit, the second was not so sure although they were keen to buy it from me, go figure! Anyway, clearing some debts after separating from my ex meant some possessions had to be sacrificed and away it went. It sold unseen, apart from the pics on ebay, cash transfered immediately, and sent his girlfriend to collect!! If I ever win the lottery I will try and buy it back 😂

      @@largeeng Your story is both great and sad in equal measure. I went through the same thing but I did get to keep my 1924 Gibson black top. I know, not as expensive or as difficult to obtain. All the best for your better, brighter future. Cheers.

    Guitar players: The middle pickup on LP Customs or Strats makes it hard to play.
    Bass players: I put a ramp between my pickups so it’s easier to play. 😂

    You guys want a 69 custom? I have one that I might be willing to let go of, only thing replaced on it afaik is the bridge, which I have the original, stored in its original case. Its also having neck pickup problems, thing sounds really tinny and light compared to the bridge. Both pickups are OG patent number pups. Like I said, things all OG afaik.
