  • How to get to the Paris airport by metro: you take RER B. That's really just about it. If you want to get to ORLY go south, CDG go north - just be sure you get on the right train (end of the line). If you're going to Beauvais, take the official bus here: www.aeroportparisbeauvais.com... Help me make more videos at / jayswanson and then find me on the internet in all of the usual spots:

    Hey Jay - Love all of your videos. My wife are in Paris now for 3 weeks, trying to act like we live here, and your videos have been the best so far on basic Parisian survival skills. I'm interrupting the Paris life to head to Scotland via CDG for a few days (writers' conference) and already knew about RER B, but seeing the tips on the "almost direct" train and such will be invaluable. Thanks!

    You can also be sure a train is going to CDG instead of Mitry-Claye by the name of the train. If it begins with "E" (ERIC, EDDY, ERET, etc.) it's going to CDG. Then it's a matter of getting the express one! The express trains from CDG into Paris have names beginning with KA, JA, or UL.

    Hello , i have been watching your videos preparing for my November trip to Paris! they have been extremely helpful,
    if im gonna be in Paris and the surrounding areas for a full week , would you recommend using the Navigo? Thanks!

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  5 лет назад +2

      I'd definitely get a multi-day pass - the Navigo really only works well/is worth it if you start on a Monday because they don't pro-rate it based on when you buy it. It's always Monday-Sunday, but the multi-day passes are more flexible. If you're going to use the Metro a ton, then passes are always worth it. I have a lot more information and recommendations in my guide if you'd like to grab a copy you can do so here: bit.ly/ParisVloggersGuide - have a great trip!

    We kept it pretty simple. We just took the subway to Paris Nord station and from there we bought the ticket direct to CDG. I seem to remember it was a direct train. All in all from the St Michel-Notre Dame station it took us about 1hr 15 minutes to get to CDG. There were signs all over the place telling you how to get to the train to the airport from Nord. I am sure it's probably as easy from any RER B station but that's how we did it. And he is NOT joking about getting controlled. We got controlled while we were changing lines at the Chatelet station. We did not have any cash on us and the controller threatened to take us to the police and confiscate our passport as our credit cards mysteriously would not run. I convinced the controller to walk with me to an ATM so I could get some cash. Not a pleasant experience. Do not lose those little subway tickets! That is the only place we saw controllers the whole time but do not mess with those guys!

    I have to disagree with you on the ease of taking the train to CDG: My experience is mixed; taking the train from the airport to Gare du Nord was straight forward but the return trip was a nightmare. The metro is fairly easy to navigate, aslong as you prepare a little before heading out, however taking the RER B to the airport is another story. Firstly, It's odd that a direct, international airport train doesn't have announcements in both English and French, they seem to think every visitor to Paris must speak French; Secondly, train employees are of no use, they just go on about whatever they are doing, whether it's smoking a cigarette or walking along; Third, the trains can stop working at anytime with no reason given, this was my experience.
    I took the RER B train from Gare du Nord to CDG and the train went to Gare d'Aulnay-sous-Bois, where it just stopped; there was some chatter in French on the PA, the doors opened, then nothing; every passenger was left with blank stares. After sitting there for what felt like 30 minutes, another train came and stopped on the platform beside us and people began going on that one, with no announcements either. That train didn't go anywhere and people got off. We had to leave the train station because we were gonna be late for our flight if we stayed, so we proceeded outside in the hopes that we would get some info or whatever. Downstairs inside the train station was complete chaos with no one seemingly having any clue of what's happening and no train reps making any announcements either; people were basically left to their own devices and so they were running out of the station frantically. A kind custodian worker tried to help us, but he didn't speak English well enough, so we headed out to try and get a Taxi. We waited at the Taxi stand for about 20 minutes before we could get one and the driver wanted to load other people in the vehicle, which we had no problem with because we just wanted to get to the airport. The other couple decided to go in another cab and so we were the only ones eventually in there. Before the driver drove off he turned off the meter and said the fare would be 50/60 Euros, I don't recall, for what would turn out to be a ten minute drive.
    To me, the trains are hit or miss and if you don't speak French, you're out on the wind basically.
    Paris is a strange place, the romance fades quickly. It is beautiful in many aspects but, it's also shabby and chaotic in many others; I think many people are programmed to love there from popular culture before actually going there. I stayed in Pigalle and it was cool because I can roll with alot but, walking around at nights you would see lots of guys trying to sell you drugs and lots of graffiti. I ate at a restaurant and the food prep and presentation was somewhat less than to be desired and to compound things, there was a mouse just running up and down, chilling in there; it was crazy. If that happened anywhere in the states, it would've been shut down but, I was reminded that it's just Ratatouille; so crazy!

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  6 лет назад +13

      A number of thoughts but I think your critique is pretty accurate that if you don't speak French, you'll have a hard time knowing what's going on if the trains are disrupted (if you watch my return trip I had a really similar experience - RER to bus back to RER again - all without any real explanation as to why it was happening). Even if you speak French, a lot of times the announcements are impossible to understand and you just have to follow the crowd, so you're not alone in that frustration at all. While I feel like the metro system is pretty intuitive, I have plenty of problems with the RER/CDG (knowing which terminal serves which airlines, getting BACK when there are hardly any signs for the RER when returning, etc.). So I totally feel your pain - I've been left hungry and frustrated just trying to get home or stressed out trying to catch a flight too. Even just flying through Germany on the trip in this video made me long for German engineering and design when compared to CDG.
      As for your time in Paris overall, I hope that a few bad experiences won't poison your view of the city forever. Pigalle is in the red light district, famously so - the American GI's called it Pig Alley after the liberation of the city, and you can tell that it hasn't changed much. There are dozens of other places within Paris that will give you a way different experience the next time you come. Things like scammy taxi drivers and crappy restaurants are all to be found in any major city, unfortunately, and it sounds like most of what turned you off about Paris would turn you off about Chicago, New York, London, or any other major city you might visit if you stayed within their rougher neighborhoods. I hope that if you decide to give Paris another try that you'll find some resources that lead you to a better experience overall - I can promise you that there is an amazing experience to be had in Paris. There's a reason it's the most visited city in the world =D
      Thanks for taking the time to share your story! Hopefully next time you can see if the rat can at least cook =D

      Agree with you, with didn't get help from the Information desk at the metro, call the phone line to ask for help no one spoke either Italian, Spanish or English as we arrived from Barcelona via Bus and the signs directed us to help desk and information, the French Lady make sure we knew her shift was over too busy counting her euros, thank heavens for a Parisian that took pity on us, still we managed to get fined 50 Euros for discarding our tickets before we got out of the metro ( an expensive lesson to learn ) My fondness for France died right there and then.

      Augusto Lugo I only spent a few days in Paris, and will be returning soon. However, there are other parts of France! My experience was that the further I got from Paris the less English people spoke (except TI). With my 100 words of French and the little bit of English that was spoken, I had a great experience (Verdun area, Lyon, Nimes, etc. ). I grew up in a a rural area and cities still bother me. But I greatly enjoyed my visit.

Also, as I'm travelling with my younger siblings, and I just found out that Disneyland is like 10 to 15 mins from our hotel do you think it would be better to go on a taxi or is the metro the most efficient way to get around? Hey Jay, I'll be visiting Paris in early December of this year. I have an 11 hr layover and I am hoping to spend 6-7.5 hours in the city visiting Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, arc de triomphe, Pont Alexandre III. I don't know if I will have time to see anything else. My understanding is to take an RER B from CDG airport and I can buy a daily pass(Mobilis). Do you think it is possible to visit all these sites with Mobilis pass and within the specific time frame? The outskirt areas of Paris where the train passes through on the way to CDG can be very sketchy.. I was just in Paris last week and there were all these scary looking African dudes with hoods on and looking very mean. I think a guy tried to pickpocket me, but I turned around and he acted like he accidentally bumped into me. It was just really uncomfortable, since I all my bags and valuables on me.

    So what do you do when the RER is not running? I was there one summer and for some reason the RER wasn't running or it wasn't running it's normal route. I heard at the time it was because of protests like the Air France protests, but I have no clue if it's true.

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  6 лет назад +2

      The airports usually have backup bus/shuttle situations but it can be really rough if the RER isn't running. USUALLY, even if on strike, the RER should still be in partial operation, but if there's a technical problem with the tracks or something they scramble (I've had this happen a few times and have never been stranded, just massively delayed on the final stretch home which is the WORST). But fear not - at least you'll still be able to get into Paris. Just look for the people helping and follow the crowds.

    I’m sorry I’m confused a little. So tor transfer from one line to another do you have to buy a ticket every time

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  6 лет назад

      No - you only need one ticket per trip for the Metro/RER - but if you want to transfer to the bus you'll need a different ticket.

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  6 лет назад

      And no need to be sorry - that rule is a bit confusing!

    How about Uber?
    Now a day Uber is everywhere?

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  6 лет назад +2

      Yep, but not always reliable either (and often expensive)

      In Paris for Christmas for about a week now. Uber from hotel near airport to Pyramides (Louvre Musem) was 40€. Coming back that night was about 60€ because demand from that area is very high at night. French drivers are extremely aggressive on very tight streets.

    • @airjoelh
      @airjoelh 5 лет назад +1

      A 16 mile drive to the Louvre cost us $44 US dollars. The same 16 miles back to the hotel later that night was $66 US dollars. The higher cost was because demand from that area was higher.

    You talk and cut these videos so fast that is hard to actually get the point of what you're explaining.
