Ok my gosh I'm so amazed at the price of produce there. We are paying 3-5 times more here in Nova Scotia, Canada. I totally agree with another comment of "Another win for Ireland" So interesting. Thank you for doing this video. Blessings everyone. I hope all who read this can keep their cupboards full through to spring. 💖
Our food prices in Ontario Canada are also 3 times those prices. We supplement with a big veggie garden and I can a lot of produce.
I need to go shopping for food at your store!! Finally, somewhere with good prices. Things are becoming scarce in the stores here.i don't know if it is the same in Ireland but if you go to farmers markets in california for fresh and organic, it is very expensive.more than at the stores. I went to one of the farmers markets once and they seemed to have the attitude of a "specialty "store with the "special" prices!! It is a lovely idea, but not practical for the everyday shopper trying to feed a family.eating healthy in America is expensive, they would rather us eat highly processed foods at a cheaper cost.
A friend of mine went to a farmers market in Santa Barbara and a dozen eggs were over $20!!! That’s insanity!
@@christian5707 Yikes! They are about $6.00 here. People are allowed to own chickens within the city limits which is nice. So you can have your own fresh eggs. 😊
@@ilikecontent2327 yes I highly recommend anyone who can get some chickens! This summer we got 15, I’ve planted some comfrey for fodder and of course the feed costs have gone up so we are trying different ways of making sure the girls are well fed. We are hoping for some of our own eggs in about 6 weeks 😉

I'm shocked at how reasonable the food prices are in Ireland. I am in Kentucky and everything is much more expensive than what you shared in that small market. You're jumper is beautiful. I cannot wait to see you model it. What a magnificent deer! Their appearance in our lives is always a blessing. If only people had eyes to see, ears to hear and a spirit open to the many voices of nature!
Unfortunately, American Grocers (and other companies) have had record profits for 2022, yet they continue to raise prices. Do you have an Aldi or Lidl near you? I am going to both tomorrow as they are much cheaper than Harris Teeter (Kroger owned).
Tennessee is the same way. The prices go up everytime I go to the store. The best way to go is to grow your own if at all possible. Our garden will be expanding next spring.
@@kristinscala9324 , The nearest Aldi is an hour away and we do not own a vehicle. (We get a ride into the nearest town (11 miles away) about every 2 months. I also use Misfits Market.
@@homesteadontheridge , We had a pretty good garden this year, but could expand somewhat. I've been planting and nurturing trees since we moved here 8 years ago, so the lot is more shaded than it once was. We don't use AC in summer and the trees help keep the house cooler. The high prices have opened my eyes to meaning of necessity.
I also live in Kentucky and am amazed at the prices and quality in Ireland. I have considered using Misfits Market. How are you finding it?
Your prices are SO much more reasonable than in the US! Our climate, here in Vermont, is more like that of Sweden or southern Norway, so what we can grow locally is limited. Greenhouses are used a lot. I try to eat local anyway, both what I grow and what the farmers here are able to produce. It means a more limited diet, but I help my neighbors and that makes me feel good. Blessings to you!
I can't believe how low your food prices are! Right now in Wisconsin a 5 pound bag of russet potatoes is about $6.95. A loaf of bread it close to $4.00 depending on the variety. A good loaf is closer to $6.00.
Our food prices are very high in the USA right now and will stay that way from now on---your home looks wonderful all the time.
Do you have an Aldi, Lidl or Trader Joe's near you? They are so much cheaper than the American grocery stores.
Even with the currency exchange, the prices at that store are about 50 - 75% less for the same items I can get at my local store! Wow! I'm spending about $100 a week on groceries, but that includes cat food as well. Still, I feel like Americans are being taken for granted and corporations are inflating prices for no reason other than greed.
It seems the prices are much cheaper than here in California. My grocery bill has tripled, diesel is $6.45 a gallon and gas is $5.99 a gallon. We are cutting back as much as humanly possible but it literally causes me anxiety every time I need to go to the store. I’m happy to hear/see some places are still affordable.

The American grocery companies have achieved record profits and Kroger has created a monopoly which has driven up prices in the US. If you have a Lidl, Aldi or even Trader Joe's, those prices are much cheaper.
$8.00 gallon up in Canada (Vancouver Island) and groceries are out of sight!
I'm in Victoria Australia diesel is currently $2.20 a litre.
Not sure how that compares but similar. Everything has skyrocketed and now with widespread flooding across Victoria fresh fruits and Veg set to be even more expensive
You need to do the exchange. The U.K is definitely more expensive than the U.S.

At a conversion rate of 1 euro equalling $.98 cents U.S., I am disheartened to learn that I am paying about DOUBLE for everything you showed here on the U.S. east coast, triple for coffee and cakes! Ours is 2-3 times more here in Alabama. I don’t see how families with children are doing it
I have a family of 5 and it is SO EXPENSIVE right now. I am only buying the groceries that are on sale or reduced price and making what I can from that.
Yet another win for Ireland - cheaper food overall than the US (except for eggs, though the free rangers I buy seemed similar). Anyway, fun to go shopping with you and top it off with a truly noble majestic deer!
Thank you for sharing those prices. I follow several people from different countries who have compared market prices recently, and one what I'm seeing is that we are paying sometimes double the price or more for things here in the US. Absolute greed!

We don't pay tax on food in the UK. It looks like Ireland is the same.

@@summerrain7466 we pay tax on food and clothing in all the states I've lived in in the U.S. That's really nice that the region you are in doesn't! Maybe more areas can start lowering the taxes on healthy food, or get rid of them.

I was thinking the same. The prices near me have tripled depending on the item.
One Euro is equal to .98 US Dollar currently 20 Oct, 2022. I just Googled a conversion chart.

I will share the difference in prices from where I live ( Hawaii) and what you shared. Currently 1 Euro = .98 USD so it's pretty close. Here we go...org celery .79 / 3.29, org cucumber .59 / 2.39, vegan cheese 1.39 / 6.29, bag of avos 2.89/ one avo 2.50 to 4.79, pasta sauce 1.89 / 11.99, ready made pizza 2.29 / 12.00 to 14.00, kidney beans .23 / 1.69, chickpeas .35 / 1.69. Colette, your sitting room always looks lovely and cozy and I imagine the blinds will look very effective at night with the light behind them. You look so proud of your improved knitting and so you should be. Good you found the solution.
I’ve found that fresh organic vegetables are quite reasonable but anything that stores on the shelves can be much more expensive. I grow most of my own food thankfully.
Well done with the knitting.... I'm currently knitting socks... I got a load of wool from a charity shop a while ago.... for £1 so my socks will be really inexpensive.... and very warm.
Fresh vegetables are a good buy here in coastal Virginia. Your eggs are much more expensive, about double. Pasta is comparable, your avocados are a great buy.

one euro = .98 cents. Pretty close so I was very surprised by your prices. I would pay a great deal more here in northeast USA! Organic/free range eggs are over $6.00 a dozen. We have our own garden plus belong to CSA and shop locally at Farmer's Market and actual farms for most of our food but if I do run into supermarket or food coop I am shocked by increases.
Hi Colette , thanks for this video very informative . We are in wales and I normally do a monthly shop for food and find that there's not a lot of difference in price . I do make my own soups and stews and find that if you stick to the basic rule of potatoes , meat and vegetables it won't cost the earth . We buy a large chicken and I can get roast dinner , chicken and chips , curry and a sandwich or casserole which cost £6 . A large bag of potatoes and veggies and you can eat well . My thoughts are that we have to go back to good old fashioned meals like our mother's and grandmother made . We can all eat well just cut out ready meals and make your own .strangely I've noticed toilet paper and kitchen rolls have gone up in price . Just my thoughts . Thanks Colette love the new blinds .xx
Pre-made foods with all sorts of additives that aren't good for you are cheaper here in the U.S. The food keeps you feeling pretty low energy and generally not well. Trying to make meals completely from scratch here is incredibly expensive. I hope something can change with food here soon. I'm incredibly happy that other countries have less of a food dessert and I'm even more disappointed with the food dessert in the U.S.

Here in Pennsylvania, USA, bread is $ 3.00. Butter, $ 4.00/pound or $ 1.00 per stick. Eggs, $ 3.49 per dozen. Milk, $ 2.59 per half gallon. Cheddar cheese, $ 4.49/pound. Apples, $ 2.49/pound. Ground beef 80% lean, $ 4.49/pound. Currently, we have a Pasta shortage in my area - just not available. To an Italian American, this is a disaster! Fortunately, I have some put away. Just got gasoline, $ 4.00/gallon. Kerosene delivery nearly $ 7.00/gallon, and that should last 6 weeks, so we keep the house at 60* F.
Here in Italy we have higher prices at LIDL. Sunflower oil has increased its price up to about 3 euro per liter, they say that the cause is the war in Ukraine but I think it is due to speculation and political reasons. Pasta of course is cheaper but veggies are more expensive and the price of dairy products is always increasing.
Anyway, we should consider the quality of very cheap food as well as its effect on the environment and workers. I produce and sell organic food at farmer markets and the prices may be higher since these goods are different, but when in season they may be even cheaper.
One of my children has just returned from the US. I always thought food was cheap over there but it turns out that’s not at all the case. They went for breakfast one day and spent nearly eighty dollars for two meals - I wouldn’t spend that on two three-course meals with wine, never mind a few eggs, bacon and pancakes! I think we are very fortunate in the UK, because despite the economic challenges we face at present it’s still perfectly possible to eat well provided you are able to cook from scratch, rather than relying on processed foods.

Your prices are so much lower than ours in Devon! I live alone, like yourself, so try and keep the cost to a minimum. Using batterie powered lights in my home, to save electricity costs now. Keep warm and cosey Colette. xxx

Food here in California, the state the supplies about 1/2 of the produce for the US, is easily twice as much and more than what you have there. Spent $55 on two half-filled bags of groceries, and I shopped for the very best deals I could find, and that only fed myself for 3 days. Best wishes to you this winter. I suspect we are going to freeze and be famished here in the States.
I live alone in Missouri and I usually can get by very well spending at or less than $50 per week. Last week was $125 for 3 tiny bags. I almost had a heart attack! 😩😂

In New Zealand (Auckland) food prices are soaring upwards!!!! Meat is pretty much a treat food unless you buy the large bags (5kg) of Chicken pieces and meat that is near it's used by date. (single parent/ 1 income). That being said I have always been thrifty and have economised and fortunately my 3 children are used to comfort food (home made from scratch) and not fast food. I feel that all those home economics classes that were mandatory (catholic schoool) for girls has come in very very handy in these times as well as various channels I watch to increase my knowledge of cultivating my own home made medicines, vegetables and preserving. The thing that gets me is the rising power and petrol prices, arggghhh
Christian, same here, in Oregon. I pay 3$ for a lemon, 3$ for one avocado. 6-7$ for a loaf of bread. I'm impressed that prices are so much cheaper there in Ireland, and a little envious...

Prices in Australia have gone up so much, this was difficult to watch. People are really struggling, so many homeless. Keeping meals simple is the key I think. Love to everybody here.

Yup, we're eating lots of beans and grains, and we're eating smaller quantities. Prices in the western US are WAY higher than in Ireland.
Here in Nz the prices for food particularly fresh vegetables and fruit had risen sharply.
Don't hold your breath about having to compost those bamboo blinds. I hung mine 23 years ago. All cords are still intact and blinds just take a dusting now and again.
I quite like our new Lidl store , and I bought my lovely Lemon tree from there earlier this year ☺️.
As regards the cottage looking cosier for the winter months Colette, I didn't think it could be any cosier .. but I do like the idea of the Bamboo blinds.

Very cheap compared to US. I very seldom shop for anything except bulk staples, but was away from home for a medical thing last week and had to buy food in the store as most people do. What a shock! Nice job on the jumper adjustment. Knitting is so flexible you can fix everything once you get over the shock of what you accidentlly might have done. Blesssings to you, very grateful for abundance and health and all the many good things in life.

gas prices have definitely increased, I have a Honda Fit car and was happy that I got good
Mileage when full Tank was $40 dollars , now the price has escalated and I pay $60 dollars for fill up

It helps to cut down on or eliminate convenience food. Cook from scratch. See what is on sale for the week at your grocer and plan a menu around those items rather than deciding on a recipe and then buying the ingredients. If possible leave your young children at home when you go grocery shopping. Soups, stews and breads made from scratch can make wondrous meals.
Here in California, I just paid $8.99 for a 6oz can of tuna fish ( from the US). The prices are more than ridiculous!
I saw a documentary on plant based vegan burgers & the ingredients were basically cooked down & squashed into a burger. The ingredients were scraps of various veg (it stated that the scraps would normally go into the compost heap). I think it was shown on ch4

Your prices are quite a bit cheaper than where I live in the U.S.
The prices at your store for food are certainly so much cheaper than ours. We pay about $2.49 for celery, at least $1.50 each for avocados, just to give you an idea. And the prices are still rising here in the U.S.
so much cheaper than here in California - shocking since many of the veggies are grown right here! many empty shelves here as well. for example, one avocado here in West Hollywood is $1.99. thank you.
OMG, we pay 1.99$ for those cans of beans! I'm glad food is affordable somewhere! We do grow a lot of our own, so we're not that hard hit, but food prices here are, it seems, triple or more what I'm seeing here.
Our prices here in Wisconsin are much higher. There is hardly anything under .99. My husband was complaining about 4 small ice cream sandwiches at 5.96.
Those veggies are not expensive compared to us in Quebec Canada…blessings.

Glad to see you fixed your jumper, and are enjoying your knitting. Here in the UK food has been going up a fair bit. I used to spend about £100-120 a month, about 4 or 5 months ago, but it's more like £120-150 now. I'm going to start planning meals around what I have in store, rather than just plan as I'm shopping.

Colette, here in the US things are very expensive. My goodness better prices you have there.. You are lucky... Funny I paid for my organic potato’s $5.99 a bag....
There's a channel called Atomic Shrimp and he does a lot of low budget challenges (like 3 meals for 1 British pound) as an exercise in problem solving/creative thinking. It's interesting what he can come up with on a limited budget. Maybe others would find it interesting as well. It seems like food prices where I am in upper midwest are roughly comparable to what you have at your Lidl store (I shop at Aldi mostly which tends to be cheaper). I would however be hard pressed to find much that is under $1 except maybe some baking soda or maybe salt.
Colette when I was in Ireland I went to Lidl and Aldi with my cousin. I know Aldi in the US and I wish it would open in Canada. I recently compared some of the prices between No Frills and Walmart here in Toronto and found that the particular items I compared were on par with one another so I continue to do online with Walmart and go into the smaller stores as needed as I do t have car. Thanks for giving us the tour!
Prices are much higher here in Phoenix. But there’s also record profits in Gas and food with the average person finding life difficult in USA!
I love the way you think! it's good to see what is happening in other parts of Gaia. In Ontario Canada, I'm refusing to pay $6.99 for many items which appears to be the average cost here opposed to your average of approximately 1.29
They can keep it. I feel for the employees who can't see the writing on the wall. These prices are not sustainable while self checkouts get busier. I recently purchased 950ml bottle of sunflower oil on sale for $14.99
On a positive note, many of the factory food items are disappearing or priced high enough to get people to rethink what they want vs need. Out of chaos... One can dream ✨💚✨

Eating fresh here in the U.S. is really a luxury and not affordable for everyone. Your prices are about 5 times less than where I live in Massachusetts. I try to grow my own and can what is left, but sometimes I don't really have a lot left with my size garden and how it grows any particular year. My chickens give me fresh eggs, but the production drops in the winter and I don't force egg laying with lights. Nature says the poor girls need a little rest😁

Last I looked the Euro was about 1:1 with the $ (my therapist is in Dublin and I’m in Orlando, so I’m aware of the instabilities in the currency values). Your food is a much better value than ours, and looks to be far healthier. We have a lot more variety here, but that’s the only advantage.
And yes, that buck is gorgeous!
Your prices are fantastic! Here in Ohio everything has gone up almost double. Some things almost tripled! And we have alot of empty shelves. I won't even mention the price of fuel. Outrageous!

Dear Colette, the prices at your Lidl are less expensive than the ones here in NY. However, they are quite a bit lower than other food stores. I shop Lidl almost exclusively. But when you do, you need to be somewhat flexible. They have a lot of their brand and European. Sometimes they won’t have an item. Still, if you’re willing to switch things up a bit, you can do very well. Blessings to all

Here in Florida , USA, the prices are much higher for just about everything. The average 12 oz bag of ground coffee is about $8.00 dollars and up for the more expensive brands. Prices go up every week, it's just awful. We try to grow produce here, but to do so organically is nearly impossible with the amount of insects and diseases. But we try.

4.00 a lb on sale. This week sugar was 99 cents for 4 lb....one bag per

I have to agree with most of the US comments. That is all dirt cheap in comparison. Ex. Coffee used to run $7 to $10 a bag on sale. More now. Though my produce if I buy seasonally, and I do, is pretty cheap in California. I no longer have small, and finicky mouths to feed. I can’t imagine how I’d manage.
A few items there that may be a bit higher (eggs were what I noticed), but overall your prices are much lower than here in US! Our prices have gone up a huge amount in the last couple of years.

The current exchange rate to U.S. dollars is about even right now. Having just gone to the grocery this morning, I can say with certainty that we are paying A LOT more for produce, canned goods and even toilet paper. I'm in Ohio, so the Midwest portion of the States--not really used to paying $13 for toilet paper here, but we are. :)

We shop in Aldi now instead of Tesco and we are saving about £50 a week for two of us x
