Finally. Someone shares my setup. Been using mine for 3 years. I tilt my platen for appropriate angle. Very simple. Easy to see both sides for comparison as you go. Mine’s a veteran of hundreds of blades. Lake Knives
This is perfect, works fantastic for me. I notice you have a thumb screw at the bottom middle, keeps the plates parallel and clamps the blade better. I cut a strip same thickness of blade, put it below the bolts, that does the same thing to let the jig grip the blade with parallel plates. Thank you way better than other "easy jigs".
Good stuff ! Could the table have a deeper notch for support beyond the belt? Also, a GoPro on a headband mount frees up that second hand, but you have to learn to dart around with eyes only, not your head. 👊😎
Hey, Gary, I used stainless steel angle for my jig it is pretty square and flat. It cost a little more but worth it. And you don't have to worry about rust. Just a suggestion.
Dude, hoping you've got a tripod by now, but they Also make chest mounts, it's a harness arrangement with a mount center of chest. Takes a little getting used to but I'll bet it's better than a head mount. - I'll Definitely be building from your concept, seeing as my machine was free but came with no disc and no table, since I'll be fabricating a table I'll make it the size I need for that type of jig. Good job. Thanks
Why not tilt the platen??? Most grinders have an angle adjustable platen, that’s why I use and it seems to work fine. Then you just use a standard piece of angle iron
Or, just use 2x4 inch pieces of angle iron, place the knife blank between them on a flat bench and g-clamp them together. Then adjust the platen as necessary..Easy.
Shelley Raskin) I saw a simple one some teenager made takes maybe 5 to 8 minutes. Take a 6" to 8" piece of angle iron drill a hole with 5/16" bit (in the center on one of the inside angle piece) about 1/8" from the outer edge. Next thread the hole put a lag bolt in,or whatever type of bolt you want to use. Now before you put the bolt in take both (outsides of the angle iron to your 90 degree Belt grinder, and grind them flat; edges also) almost done. last get a 2" or 3" C clamp to clamp your blade to the outside polished angle iron to start your bevel. Now take that lag bolt, and place it in the threaded hole. Screwing it down through the hole will raise your angle iron closer to your grinder for a thinner bevel back it out for a thicker one. I apologize for typing this all out like this, but I couldn't remember what channel I'd seen it on. I made one,and I love it. It's simple to the point, and works great. I wish I knew the kids name so I could give him his credit, but I don't. I just know it's not mine sorry to say lol. enjoy.. :)
heyjacks The reason to grind hard is that it is less likely to warp when it is at full thickness, and if it does warp a little bit I’m able to grind it out
All these jigs? Rotate you're platen then you only need any 90 degree block to hold you're knife. These grinders are made to do bevels with just a simple wrench.
the issue with just a piece of angle iron is when you grind one side it would be ok, but when you grind the other there would be very little of the angle iron in contact with the table
Houseknives Those belts are pretty decent, I would say there just a little bit better than something like a combat abrasive. I did a video comparing belts, I’ve also done some more grinding on a very hard steel and without question the Norton blaze are the only belts I am getting for my coarse grit ceramics. The 3M is almost as good, but it’s a lot more money. The deerfos I got from super grits here in Pennsylvania. I think I like them better than the combat abrasives in there about the same price.
Percy Brown The bolts are long enough to accommodate the girth of a wooden handle, assuming you mean if you wanted to put a blade with a wooden handle in there to grind it or grind it. I would recommend taping up the handle so you don’t scratch it.
Sorry but don't like this setup. You can't control the 90 degree angle perfectly against the sanding machine where the knife is to the left and the right of the sanding machine. It needs to be straight in front for more control. Nice try though, just move to the center and see how much better it is.
I dont see any benefit to grinding while its hardened. Takes longer, harder on the belts and the machine, big risk of overheating it and wasting time and money. Im sure if u can afford a $2000 grinder u can afford to build a little forge for heat treating. Or u can send them off after u do the grinding if its one of those super steels that u cant quench in oil. All im saying is time is money and belts arnt cheap
Lol... I'll be that guy who can say that he has unlimited access to Corian. And hanex. And Hi-Macs. And Avonite. And Starron. And formica, Wilson art, etc etc etc... Lol

...so making one of these! Thanks so much for doing all that trial & error portion for us. You just can't beat free R & D. ;)
I could use one off these. Perfect design
Hey Mr. Creely, really like your gig design. Thanks for the video.
I like this very good idea 💡😌

$125 you are kidding. Jigs do not require much design thought. There are lots of different ways to reach the same goal.best of luck to you
If you can make a knife you can make a tripod. LOL

Great design. I know this video was created in 2017 and its 2021 but any chance you have one for sale?
VERY INTERESTING!
Muy bueno el video saludos amigo Daniel
Switch out the nuts for wing nuts. That'd be a winner.
Is this what you use to sharpen knives as well?
Sometimes, yes

Nice refinements!

Thanks, I have never used a jig, only freehand but I have wanted to get one, that looks doable!
Shelley Raskin i have one i made we have a machine shop it was so simple to make
If you contact me i.can make one for you
Rich Romano that would be awesome if you have the time and inclination!

Or free hand from the start and build the muscle memory needed. Just a tip not a judgement.
Gorgeous hands...thank you for your tips
hiyder ayaad you got like a Hand Fetish Or something??? Lol wtf? Hahaha
How do you adjust the angle of the grind?
The table does the tilting.
Great work Gary! How long & wise is the angle iron you used? Seems to be a good all around size. Thanks for the videos!
How have sales been, did you get a tripod and redo video?
I appreciate you sharing the design. I'm curious why you harden before you grind. I'd love to see how that flat grinding jig is made.
heyjacks The reason to grind hard is that it is less likely to warp when it is at full thickness, and if it does warp a little bit I’m able to grind it out
You're less likely to accidentally take off too much material as well
@@Creelyblades do you find you go though way more belts that way?
I do see several advantages.
(Clever jig btw 👍🏼)
@@yallawallahalla you do go through more belts, I would not say way more
@@Creelyblades thanks Gary.
COOL VIDEO
are you kidding, it looks like your on a rollercoaster.
Should have done actual demo of grinding.

Joe Cos That would definitely be another way to do it if you did not have a tilting work rest.
What’s the final price for the jig? I’m interested in buying one from you for my nephew.
I'll sell you the same gig!
jesus, is that camera swinging from a string?
A little tip. Don’t hand hold your camera or phone when making videos.
Ron Snayberger 👍
You will be pleased to know I finally got a tripod for the shop!
Do you still sell these?
Knife Angle Calculation (Android App)
I don't get it, if the angle iron is at a 90 degree angle, how can you sharpen a knife without angling the knife?
table angle adjustment
@@cznebel thanks
Might be interested in purchasing one of these. Are you selling yet?
125?????
Yeah, right
How would I go about getting one of this?
Are you still selling these jigs?
Why don’t you just bolt the knife blank to the one piece of angle iron and grind it like that, the jig seems to be a little over thought in my opinion
the issue with just a piece of angle iron is when you grind one side it would be ok, but when you grind the other there would be very little of the angle iron in contact with the table
Over thinking this. You made it more difficult than what it should be
How much are you selling the jigs for? Do you take on small projects for a fee?
What is the purpose of the thumb screw on the bottom
John Albrecht The purpose of that is to offset for the thickness of the blade So that the jig applies even pressure
