Are Survive! Knives claims about CPM Magnacut legit?
Просмотров 21 тыс.7 месяцев назад
This is a dive into my experience with Magnacut as compared to Survives issues. Here is a statement from Niagra- In case you were wanting to hear our side of the story: Niagara Specialty Metals (NSM) has processed over 600,000 pounds of CPM MagnaCut since its inception in 2020. From October 2021 until January 2023 NSM has sold or given Survive Knives 1,240 pounds of MagnaCut. Survive complained...

To my knowledge, the technique was shown by Murrey Carter, and I believe he learned it from Japanese master smiths. An upcoming project for Creely Blades. The first knives I made her kitchen knives, and I still most enjoy kitchen knives. This is an idea born of my RV actually, a petty sized knife but with a chefs knife broad blade. Perfect for small counter spaces, or food prep on the run. These will be in CPM Magnacut. I hope to have a few of them available at blade show 2022.

Carbon just swims around freely during forging and heat treating. That’s why you get some kind of average toughness between the two parent alloys. Chromium and other carbide forming elements move much slower.

I bought a first addition gso 10 from Guy at survive knives back a number of years ago. I tried a forced patina on the blade and soaked it overnight in vinegar also heated the vinegar and soaked it. A gso 10 in 3v! Dumb move it pitted and stained with literal holes in the blade. Guy was easy to reach I even spoke to him in person one time on the phone just called the number listed for his shop. He replaced the blade for me with a factory 2nd blemish within no time. A big gso 10 in 3v. I was so blown away with him doing this and being so cool standing behind his product especially with me being really at the end of the day an idiot to that to the gso10. Ive since done a nice dark patina on the replacement with ferric choloride. Guy is an absolute perfectionist and just no compromise with fit and finish and super detail oriented. I have a number of knives from him. Really hoping by some miracle he can right the ship and get on top of the back orders etc. I think he took on too much and just got overwhelmed. There is huge amount of variables that go wrong in such a detailed assembly and production process. How he did it for so long and put out 1000s of perfectionist mini masterpieces is really amazing. His critical detail goes into his explanations of the setbacks etc. If you order from some custom makers if their books are open you'll wait years. Just my .02s but my experience with Guy and the 7 or 8 knives I have from them was great and he went above and beyond to make it an awesome experience.

Big question here is the factory VSC and the motors that are used. With the AmeriBrade, it appears they supply only Baldor motors and a VFC they make or have made for Ameribrade? I do like the Baldor motors for their refined operation but boy, they sure do price them out of the hands of many. Those 56C frame are always a 3 phase set up in 115v and 240v?

Survive is closing up shop for good. Probably looking for bankruptcy protection. It sounds like they've taken a lot of people's money and those people will never see it again. He's blaming the whole thing on the decarb issue. A little honesty would probably go a long way. "We screwed up." The fact that they refused to take Niagra up on their offer to buy back the allegedly faulty Magnacut says it all. There's a RUclips video titled "What's going on at Survive". I'll trust Dr. Larrin Thomas over some Guy who got in over his head and is arrogant enough to act like it's because his company has higher standards than the rest of the industry. After reading the statement from Niagra it's clear that Survive was a company with no scruples trying to get money for absolutely nothing, willing to tarnish the reputation of suppliers/manufacturers in order to get a larger settlement. Somebody should keep an eye on Guy. He seems like the type to take whatever he's able to salvage and start doing the same thing under a different company name.

I am not protecting anything, I am offering a counter point to their perspective. I just think much of what Survive said about Maganacut was wrong, and they were conflating 3 different issues. 2 of the 3 were process issues (warping and decarb), and the decarb was the biggest loss, an issue that had nothing to do with it being Magnacut- any stainless would have decarbed in a similar fashion in a stress relieve cycle. As for the voids they have only shown a hand full of blades with that issue out of 1240lbs of steel. So to answer your first question there were not that many sheets of steel with that problem.
