Hi Jeff, I’m a long time musician and multi instrumentalist and n00b vocalist as of about 6 weeks now. Love your videos for tenor and just found this one. Want to make sure I’m aligned here… the exercises around 17:00 with the sustained notes had my voice breaking near the top of the range. Goal is to keep pushing (without pain or tension) to build that capability? Or should I be cautious?
If your voice is 'cracking' it is telling you that things are not in balance. The balance that we're talking about is one of airflow and vocal fold engagement. If you've only been practicing singing for six weeks, then it's a bit early for this video. I know that it may seem too easy, but start here with vowel alignment practices in a comfortable range: ruclips.net/p/PL2mQP7sE6PHg8wjZBjfJ3HGVqjxBF2swE Learn about appoggio here: ruclips.net/video/qT1j3InEakM/видео.html Implement the appoggio practice here: ruclips.net/p/PL2mQP7sE6PHgcDqjNxzpu2M0WR8saVeAz And as your vowel alignment becomes seamless in your comfortable range, start these practices: ruclips.net/p/PL2mQP7sE6PHgDZbHwHzRwUf-HOWec-fgq Best, Jeff

Man, this is honestly an INCREDIBLE workout, perfect for the tenor. I’ve been using this also for voice over gigs warming up with this agility and straight exercises one after the other is GREAT for a long day of speaking as well as singing! Thanks!
Jeff. You are the vocal whisperer. When you sing along with the scales it is so effortless. The sound is flawless. You make it look so easy, but you are doing serious vocal work. Wow. Blown away. Much respect ✊
Thank you so much! I appreciate it! Thanks also for subscribing ! I've been doing these scales for a very long time, nearly every day for years. With good engagement and a history of registration practice I would hope that it would sound effortless. My hope is to provide exercises and practices so that it won't take you as long to get there as it took me! Enjoy! Jeff
Couldn't thank you enough for these! Just recently discovered and they are my go-to easy light warm-ups on the way to work, warm-ups before practice and shows, and the cool downs after each! You're the best for this. Easily the perfect style for me.
Jeff! Thank you so much for this one! I’ve been needing a warmup that ALSO gives me a workout, and BOY does this do that. I credit you for helping me to get singing again!
this warm-up does true magic! my voice used to break after 45 minutes of singing, now i can sing two shows in a row without missing a beat. thank you so much for this! 🙏♥
My partner brought me singing lessons with you for my birthday and I can't wait to start! Keep up the fantastic videos and I'm honored to have the opportunity to learn from you first hand :)
Thank you! If you're the person that I think you are, I hope that you're feeling better and recovering well! Get in touch when you're ready! Best, Jeff
Challenging! Awesome Jeff You always help Keep making the singing world s better place! You do everyday for me, and it’s beginning to transfer in live performance. Big Love from down under :)
Just know how happy I am to be on board with you. There’s going to be hundreds of not thousands of others - how much better does that make the singing and performing world! Rolka to me stands for intelligence and integrity. You’re a stand out.
Excellent warm-up with plenty of opportunity to practice breath support, vowel formation and alignment and transition in and out of the upper register. I can sometimes get away with a bit of carelessness or pushing in a short song or exercise but in longer singing such as this, poor technique just seems to multiply problems as the singing goes on. This is a good exercise to practice maintaining focus. If I work hard, I feel I deserve that cool down at the end! This is pretty hard for me but I really like it.
Thanks, Jeff! I was in need of a rock tenor vocal work out as I am currently developing my voice for a rock project. This will help greatly as I continue my journey of finding my voice!
hey jeff id love to get a warm up thats all about sustain straight tones going to vibrato, a long 20 mins work out that would go from bottom to top and i would love it even more if it had chromatic segments and minor segments or some other cool scale. i find them to be so relaxing when i really get into the breathing and resonating
Wow, great exercices and great range even for a baritone who wants to practice his high range with heady-mix! Thank you as always, you are a guru! 🙌🙌🙏🙏
Great workout dude! I sing a lot of Soundgarden and rival sons and led Zeppelin and anything you can do to point me in the direction of endurance would be awesome!
The exercise beginning att 10:11 you're doing it completely differently when you do it slow compared to when you're doing it fast. When you sing along you do eh-eh-eh-eh-eh-Eh-eh-Eh-ah-Ah-ah-Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-aaah, hitting the highest note four times. Then when it's just the piano at 10:27 it's eh-eh-eh-eh-eh-Eh--ah-Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-aaah, hitting the high note two times. This had me confused for months.
Hey Jeff just thought I ask how do you get the cracky side of your singing voice to decease got any exercises you can include in your up to date singing warm ups it would be truly appreciated.....thanks alot Thomas Hodges
I really do love the videos but I keep finding that I don’t quite seem ready to tackle anything in the tenor range when I finish…. I seem to have one of 2 things happen, either it doesn’t warm up the top end enough so when I try to get past my second break there is little control or my lower range is disconnected from my upper… I’ve tried the gentle warm ups to help lower, I’ve tried the full warm ups and resonance warm ups… I can’t tell what im doing wrong? Yet if I do the tongue out ‘the’ exercise, the la ah - wide mouth tin sound and mix this with Sirons in the warm up, I get closer, what am I doing wrong, should I be doing more than one video of warm ups before I hit a Michael Bolton track because I tell you… I don’t seem to be able to warm up enough on these to get to my full range for some reason. I know its a stretch for me because I sit baritenor to tenor and so correct use of vowels are extremely important to avoid it sounding terrible and breathing is super important with Bolton’s stuff but vocal endurance is hard with it… I either find I’m not able to get fully warmed up, or I warm up and 3-4 songs in… my mix voice is breaking in the middle or disconnecting from chest voice noticeably (it’s all downhill after that because your chasing your tail) I’m happy to follow any video or set of videos daily if I know my vocal will get a complete workout and will help me get to the goal. Annoyingly I seem to bust out my throat all the time as I sing Queen, Whitesnake, Paul Rogers, Journey, Survivor, Foreigner, Michael Bolton, Stevie Wonder, Huey Lewis, Chris Cornell, Bob Jovi, Bryan Adam’s etc… all stuff that melts you throat in a few songs! The hope is I will get being able to sing 6, then 8 songs and more before my voice is shot!
How do I stop singing from my throat during these warm-ups? I am trying to place everything forward in my mask area and use my diafram, but I keep pushing the high notes with my throat. Also, is it okay to mix when at the high part of register? I do this naturally.....thanks!!
I have muscle tension dystonia and struggle to sing the scales at speed...especially the ay to ah to oh. I am making a tiny bit of improvement but opening my throat to get a clear, strong sound for any length of time is rough. Any suggestions on overcoming this?
I just answered a similar question in my last Questions from Comments video! Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/s6vBSA3LQhc/видео.html Have a look/listen to that and follow up with me! Best, Jeff
Hey Jeff, during the endurance in the mix range I am confused to whether I am supposed to flip into head/falsetto voice, on the last 3-4 notes I cannot stay in the mix range. In that case I am not yet ready for these practices?
Great question! The idea is to make a smooth transition across the secondo passaggio (the break - as it is commonly called). If you're 'flipping' though, you're unlikely to keep a consistent sound. So set the transition up throughout the zona di passaggio with incremental changes!
Hi Jeff, this has been my go to for trying to gradually expand my range for more pop and rock songs (submitted a video audition for a production of Rent this weekend). How high does that sustained exercise go? I'm able to get through everything but the last run with a good mix before having to go falsetto for the entire last one, which throws me off coming back down the scale, so I've been sitting it out. Trying to get a sense of what my range has gotten to since I've always considered myself just a baritone with full voice only hitting a G#4
Break a leg on the audition! As for how high it goes, I have a suggestion: I would advise you to try to figure this out on your own, as it's easier than it may seem and will help with your ear training as well. There are numerous free piano apps for mobile devices or you can try this website: www.musicca.com/piano Just so we're clear, I have no affiliation with that website. When you come to the note in question, just pause the video, but keep singing the note. Pluck around on the piano until you find it, and then of course, you'll know the note. It is important to make these associations as vocalists, so that we come to know the physical feeling of the range that notes are in. All the best, Jeff
Wow! I'm all in with this warm up. Does it get easier? I've been doing them everyday for a month now. I've noticed some improvement for sure but that super high section is a struggle! I sound like a wounded animal! Please tell me it gets easier! Or am I singing higher than my range? Thanks! Femm
It gets better with intentional practice. If it is a struggle, and sounds strained, you may need to investigate your registration event technique. There's lot of that here on the channel! Thanks for watching!
hey thanks for this... just an observation..in the section 'endurance in the mix range', your sample vocalisation doesnt match with the sing along piano playing ... your sample is a tad longer than the piano piece...
Ah, I sometimes do the rhythm a little more elongated during the examples in order to give folks time to get the vowels and pattern. I'll be careful about that in the future. Best, Jeff

Cracks are indications of imbalance - so look at your vowel alignment and appoggio breath management technique!
