Changing one of the shoulder buttons to jump and pressing either x or y makes shorthopping effortless. You can just buffer the shorthop by pressing the shoulder button and y and it's pretty easy imo
this, just do this. It's insane how much easier it becomes to just consistently short hop if you bind a shoulder button to jump cause you can shoulder+x or y and it'll always short hop, instead of lightly tapping the jump button and getting arthritis once you get used to this it can help you further along as well once you get to dash attack cancel etc and instant rars
Ooooh! You mean essentially hitting 2 jump buttons at the same time? I currently play with my jump button mapped to a shoulder button, but I only use that for jumping as opposed to hitting two buttons at the same time to jump!
I was just a pick up and play smash player until I started anticipating moves, and working on my offstage game + spiking. My brother won't play with me anymore.

I use pro controller and have a set up where my r button is jump and my l button is for grabbing. It allows me to play faster and be less afraid of mis inputting
Easy way to short hop, have 2 jump buttons. I use a pro controller and I use both shoulder buttons to jump while having my triggers as shield and grab.

I see a comment made by Eliezer Paulino but I have small different tips. I'm personally not that good but if you do have questions then leave it below. List to do(listed in most important) 1. Pick a main, it is so important to pick a main so you understand the in and out of that character. DO NOT TRY TO LEARN MORE THAN 2 CHARACTERS! 2. Change your controls to your preference, can't play unless you feel comfortable. 3. Understand the purpose of dash dance/fox trotting, it is to stay near your opponent and bait moves. Many new players just dash dance and get hit. 4. Short hop fast fall, it is very important for characters like Lucina when trying to hit small characters like pichu. 5. Practice neutral game, combos are important but you need the small hits that lead into the bigger hits. Understand what move is safe and better for certain situations, check out ultimate frame data. 6. Reverse backair, run forward then turn back, jump forward. This is because most characters backair is better then their forward air. 7. Find a player that is on your skill level, it's less frustrating and easier to learn if both players are equal. But you can play against someone better but I don't like to rage. 8. Do not play if you are in a negative mood, you may not think it's significant but your mood affects your gameplay. 9. Understand your goal, professional or casual. The amount you'll need to practice will be different if you're trying to win a local than beat your friend(unless your friend is the best in the local area). Things that will naturally come from experience 1. Patience, do not always rush or you'll get rekt. 2. Reading, you'll get used to reading if you play enough. 3. Teching, there are methods in training mode but real teching is more realistic since you won't know when it's gonna happen. 4. Rage, you will get frustrated unless you're very chill, just take a break and come back when you feel better. 5. Mix up game, you will soon notice doing the same thing will not work and will adapt.
Press the 2 jump buttons And it will be a completely different story this is with the Pro controller make the Y button attack and the A button the jump button and that smash stick can turn to tilt stick it will make your short hop life easier I don’t know about GameCube controller it might work a different way to do the 2 jump button way that’s what I call it hope that helps
Fun story about this. I'm not good at smash. All of my friends were better than I did. Everytime we played smash they were taunting me. I spent a full month doing just this by replacing my gametime with smash basic training. When we met again for a lan gaming afternoon. I felt like an anime guy who spent a year in the montain. Like everybody was moving slow as hell. I don't know how to combo yet, but just landing some tilts with accuracy were enough for me to beat each one of them in 1V1 lmao. They told me : "Bro, you win only because inkling is fast" I was like : "Okay let's play the same character then" One of them picks Cloud. I gave him the first stock just to know how it feels and how to time fast falls he was like : "See how it's harder now ?" I smiled and played again by applying those basics. I beat him again and he was like : "Bro ! How can you play this game so fast ?! How do you train ?!" So thanks proguide lmao
I have my pro mapped to LZ and x as jump buttons. I primarily use the trigger but I’m more consistent when I short hop with LZ+X and the input is less clumsy than x and y. Just a suggestion. I also remapped y as a grab button
I'm the one teaching my friends smash, and I'm surprised I'm teaching the right things! I don't seem to have added talking about b reversing and messing with platforms. I need to mention that you forgot that you can do tilts after dashing by crouching and quickly tilting the control stick then attacking.
I haven’t watched the video yet but already seeing so many comments about short hopping, if anyone’s open to a control change for just the face buttons, I have my A & X to jump so it makes it almost like pressing 1 button for a short hop. Y is special and b is the attack, may seem weird at first but I think the short hopping makes it worth it. I still have a shoulder button as jump too btw
GN6 put your right stick as tilts, one of the shoulders as jump (optional), and high stick sensitivity. Also, see if u like stick jump on or off and test controls to see what suits you. There is no right or wrong answer just preference. I do recommend tilts for your right stick tho
GN6 i would use double joycons if i were you, but if you wanna do single joycon you could change that little shoulder button on the bottom to jump. If you press two jump bottons at the same time in smash bros ultimate you short hop. So you could press that shoulder button and x to shorthop or x and y (your jump buttons). I would recommend using double joycons, game cube, or pro controller because it fits well in your hands and the right stick is so so helpful.
I don't know how I didn't know this, but I have been doing shorthops the hard way this whole time. I'm almost perfect at it now but online lag can sometimes mess it up. Gunna try the easy way now
I use two buttons to do short hops and i wonder if there is really an advantage to short hop with a single button. I can do it easily while practicing but my problem is that in the middle of a fight i press the jump button too hard
Good guide but you can short hop by pressing both jump buttons. I have been using this since it was released. I have my R button on my GameCube controller set to jump and I have my ZR set to jump on my Wii Classic Controller for Brawl.
Around the 12 minutes he says that for run/dash up tilt you need to release the stick then move the right stick up for an up tilt. While it is true, there's also the fact that you have a window of 11 frames (if forward tilt to where you are facing) or 12 (if up or down tilt) where if you push the right/C-Stick up during those frames of the initial dash without letting go the left stick you can do any tilt attacks even forward tilt (by pushing around those frames to the opposing direction. If facing right push c stick to the left or viceversa) to pull a running tilt. The reason why i say that forward tilt to where you're face has a window of 11 frames and not 12 is because on that 12th frame if you push in that same oppsing direction it will do the forward tilt but to the opposing direction(good luck pulling it of at normal speed lol)
No. You have to return the control stick (left stick) to neutral during your run/dash because you will perform a dash attack if you don't. If you perform it right, once you return the control stick back to neutral position you can cancel into not only into any tilt but into any attack (you can cancel into jump, so aerials as well though you can just jump aerial w/o returning control stick to neutral). The pivot canceling in the video is also called pivot boosting, because you actually slide a little when canceling your turn around. This is super useful because you hit people sooner than they may expect, and it also allows better spacing to get stronger/weaker hitboxes of their moves or just make it safer with the extra distance between you and the opponent.
@@BladexZero12 you do know I have tested this frame by frame already and it works. Have also done it at normal speed and works. Obviously if you push during the dash animation it'll result in a dash attack, but if push the stick around the window of 11 frames(for forward tilt where you're facing) or( 12 for the rest) of the "initial dash" not the "dash" animation you can actually pull a tilt attack even forward tilt if you push to the opposite direction 1 frame after initial dash. Also during the 12th frame of the initial dash you can perform a forward tilt to the opposite direction, but good luck pulling it off though, since the window is only one frame for that one
@@BladexZero12 for re-confirmation I re-did the test both at normal speed and frame by frame and still pull it off consistently. As a side note the reason I know this is because of a video I saw from a player known as Gonzalo "Zero" Barrios where he gives a tutorial of the game's movement months ago
@@jovannydiazabad6123 Jovanny Diaz Abad what you described just sounds like pivot boosting/canceling at 13:19, which is different than what i described in the first part of my comment. Notice the slide momentum Mario keeps when he does the up tilt. You can pivot boost/cancel into anything, including grabs and aerials. when you pivot cancel into an aerial its called a reverse aerial rush or RAR
@@BladexZero12 except that it isn't pivot cancelling since I'm never pivoting at those moments thus not releasing the left stick at all. You can try on training mode frame by frame
I practiced short hopping with Mario and was able to do it with a single button, but using x and y on the pro switch controller just makes short hopping too easy.
What I do is spend around 10 minutes in training with short segments that get replaced when I master them. I just started this, so tell me if this is bad and why.
I have been playing ever since smash has been released But I still need to watch this video because I’m starting to not play Lame because I feel like ultimate will be the time where I grow out of using every single projectile in the game at once
Just a nit, but I feel like that description of breversing is pretty misleading - not necessary to use a brev, you can do a turnaround input for recovery moves which is easier.
I'm watching this current year and I do not understand turnarounds. I know how to do them but I always end up just starting a dash, is there a controller setting that makes it so that the sticks aren't as responsive?
I think my problem is that I can't find anyone to play with me Im in a group in whatapp of the local I go but when I ask to play no one want to ☹️ so is hard to grind since I don't wanna play elite smash something I basically never do
Hey guys, Im very now to like playing smash ultimate with a control believe or not. I need help, how do you backflip? I see many pros do it and I just can’t find a way how to do it. Someone help me please
Should I practice these like 10-20 minutes a day, or before each session? I didn't really see any improvements until spending 3 and half hours on one thing.
I’ve found that rather than having to perfectly time the short hop, c stick tilt then fast fall, I can press my smash and jump buttons to trigger a short hop attack, press the left stick in the direction of the desired aerial and then fast fall which seems much faster and less technical

Loved the vid
Question, im trying to learn how to get good at this game and steve, do I need to do the short hops cause his first jump is already really low?
out of all the words that get complex in spanish he picked one of the ones that is almost the same what are the odds? thermonuclear= termonuclear XD
Could they not give us at least 4 frames for short hop lol?
What I do is spend around 10 minutes in training with short segments that get replaced when I master them. I just started this, so tell me if this is bad and why.
I thought that I was getting good practice in by playing classic mode on the highest difficulty but i was wrong
This video is good for very new players but for intermediate izaw's guides are really good i recommend
I have been playing ever since smash has been released But I still need to watch this video because I’m starting to not play Lame because I feel like ultimate will be the time where I grow out of using every single projectile in the game at once
The thing is, I'm only allowed 1 hour a day, and this much warming up gives me a few matches a day :/
B reverse is actually incineroar best friend
Just a nit, but I feel like that description of breversing is pretty misleading - not necessary to use a brev, you can do a turnaround input for recovery moves which is easier.
You can still do c stick arial with smash stick
I'm watching this current year and I do not understand turnarounds. I know how to do them but I always end up just starting a dash, is there a controller setting that makes it so that the sticks aren't as responsive?
I honestly think that movement is half the game with smash since attacks are to intertwined with it.
Good video , I'm gonna try to do it , but I know myself that's I will forgot to do it just once a week
Thank you for these
the video not in the description. Shocker
I think my problem is that I can't find anyone to play with me Im in a group in whatapp of the local I go but when I ask to play no one want to ☹️ so is hard to grind since I don't wanna play elite smash something I basically never do
Tbh i dont know anyone who uses the default jump keys everyone uses the bumper way easier during combos
The “B-Reverse your recovery” part is actually completely useless because you can just angle the control stick up + to the right/left
That's...literally what he said in the video.
@@zanido9073 oh
I wish I found this video before your rar because I master rar with the rising short hop Ariel
So if I feel more comfortable short hopping with 2 buttons (2 triggers) I should stop that and practice one button ?
This will be helpful
Hey guys, Im very now to like playing smash ultimate with a control believe or not. I need help, how do you backflip? I see many pros do it and I just can’t find a way how to do it. Someone help me please
Thank You :3
So this is smash duolingo
Your ideal heart rate is zero :D
Edit: Thought this was a wii fit guide D:
I main greninja, but I’m going to try to use ice climbers as my secondary main 😊
What r some tips for ppl who play with tap jump?
But Thermonuclear in Spanish is Termonuclear. xD
Should I practice these like 10-20 minutes a day, or before each session? I didn't really see any improvements until spending 3 and half hours on one thing.
I would recommend some daily, but then maybe a little extra before an event like a tournament
Ngl, a game with 2 jump buttons should have a short hop button
This channel is amazing :D
Thermonuclear in spanish is just the same exact word but without the h
I did an instant short hop once
RARing isn't on the list?
0:03 Allen Iverson
I’ve found that rather than having to perfectly time the short hop, c stick tilt then fast fall, I can press my smash and jump buttons to trigger a short hop attack, press the left stick in the direction of the desired aerial and then fast fall which seems much faster and less technical
That does a rising aerial, which is often worse and less safe and leads to less follow ups than a falling aerial
