It's fine and all that there's the option to disconnect controllers, but the second one of the loose controllers are touched, they get synced again, and typically this happens on the character select screen, so it holds up other matches.
I really like my setup despite it being wacky. I use joycons most of the time, jump with right trigger, shield with left, left bumper is an alternate special button, right bumper is grab, the topmost button (x or y) is shield, the leftmost (y or x) is jump. Tilt stick, high sensitivity, no tap jump. I find it much easier and more instinctive to jump with the trigger rather than the buttons because it allows me to more easily attack separate from my jumps, and no extra movement is needed if I want to use the c stick while jumping. The extra special button has a few gimmicky uses but in general doesn’t get in the way, as I still have a grab button. I don’t use X or Y too much but pressing two jump buttons or two shield buttons does have a few uses.
For me everything is standard except with stick jump off, sensitivity high, tilt attack for c stick, and jump as L1 just because of how I use Pichus thunder off stage
Okay so maybe this is an uncommon setup but I haven't seen people talking about it and I find it really comfortable. On a pro controller, I set B to jump, Y to attack, A to special, X to grab, Tilt stick, Tap Jump off, ZL to jump to make shorthopping easier, ZR and R to shield, and L to basically anything because I haven't found a good mapping for it just yet. Compared to normal controls, this seems really bizarre and even weirder than Zackray's controls. But it also works really well for me. More people should try it out.
Seeing Zackray's unusual control scheme was so surreal to me cause I was like, 'woah, and here I thought all pros did was turn off tap jump'. Been playing with B jump, Y attack, X special, A grab since mid last year and there's always a little side-eye from your opponent when you set your controls like that.
My setup as a ZSS main is ZL-Jump, L-grab, ZR-Shield, R-Special, D pad-shield, Right/C Stick- Tilt attack, X and Y- Jump, A- attack, B-special. XY as jump for short hop, ZL as jump and R as special for b reverse, wavebounce and side b reverse (when coupled with Tilt Stick). Tilt to right stick for easier tilt attacks, b reverse and wavebounce, while having access to quick aerials. D pad on shield for mashing out of grab. Finally Tap jump off, High Sensitivity on, AB for smash attack as well as rumble is optional
Jump on shoulder is AMAZING. I have A as my grab button, Y as attack and B as special, X as also jump. Doing a special and jump at the same time is great.

Don’t know if anyone else knows this but if you change one of the guards into a jump and hit that and another button for jump simultaneously it also counts as a short hop. Requires much less precision that way. Discovered this accidentally but hadn’t stopped since.lol
Stick jump off because you cannot do falling up airs unless you've already used your 2nd jump. I main ZSS and short hop falling up air is a ladder combo starter. Pretty important.
The reason why Zackray puts grab on left trigger is so that he can do gyro release aerials better with ROB. He said this in a video recently where having grab separate from him right hand which is inputting aerials makes the timing easier. After trying this, I agree as well and have pretty much the same control setup. As for D-Pad set to Grab and Jump, he uses that to mash. Setting D-Pad all to Shield is not optimal for mashing because you are putting in the same input. When mashing, it's most optimal to put in different inputs. So spamming the Shield button is actually not a good idea. So actually, if Zackray really wanted to mash with D-Pad, he should make it something like Grab, Jump, and Shield since you can put in 3 inputs into the D-Pad. Another benefit that may have been unintentional is that if you press both the shoulder and B button to jump, you get a short hop. So it kinda makes short hopping easier.
My gamecube controller settings. My top buttons - shield, A - attack, B - special, Y - jump, X - grab, C -tilt. No rumble, no stick jump, high stick sensitivity. Might use a shoulder for jump after this video though
pro user here. first thing i did when first playing was remap b and a to jump, y to attack x to special. feels like playing a platformer. you automatically short hop when you press jump with either attack or special.
I bought a NYXI controller that is shaped like the GameCube version I enjoy it and it also has a lot of versatility with the amount of devices I can pair/connect to
Here’s my control map (I use Dual Joycon, planning to get Pro Controller soon) Buttons And Analog R Stick goes on Tilt for me I have a very hard time trying to move the L stick slowly and knowing when to press attack On the other hand, Smash Attacks are much easier for me to do and I can input them much faster R Stick Tilt also helps me dash into Tilt attack, for when I’m playing something like Roy, or really any character with high end lag dash attacks X is jump for comfort Y is attack for comfort, and because it’s near jump I can short hop aerial much better and it helps a lot. A is Special, near jump for the same reason B I don’t really care about, I just put it on Special if I miss input A, which barely happens. D pad I don’t use For L and R/ZL and ZR I put Shield on L and Grab on R for comfort, as of other games I play, like Hollow Knight or Metroid Dread (specifically just Metroid, as you can’t change controls in that game) where L is a movement option while R is a type of attack. Advanced Settings Rumble is off but I might turn it on just because I might be able to handle Rumble, but for now it’s off. Attack + Special Smash attack is off Stick Jump is off Stick Sens is on normal, I just don’t see the difference turning it low or high And I think that’s it.
My set up is this -pro controller -tilt stick -rumble off, tap jump off -senstivity high -a b smash on -zr jump -r special -y attack -a jump Everything else is the same I'm new to competitive smash so getting used to these controls wasn't that hard. I have a shoulder buttons mapped to jump because it makes short hope aerials easy and some advanced tech easier to perform without needing claw grip. Special is for easier wave bounces Attack is set to Y because it's closer to the control stick and I play zelda a lot so it's more intuitive for me.
I have a wired Luigi PDP controller, so I have access to all 4 shoulder buttons. My L button is a jump button, R, zR, and zL are the same. Tilts are set up for c stick, and stick jump is still on. For some reason, this works absolutely fantastic for me (coming from a Falcon main).
My setup: D PAD: Taunts C STICK: Tilt attacks A: Jump B: Special Y: Attack X: Jump L: Jump R: Grab ZR: Shield ZL: Grab When I play Ganondorf, C STICK is smash attack
If you change your controls and haven't done World of Light and grinded the Spirit Board (plus Summoning, etc.), it's a pretty good excuse to kill two birds with one stone. Forty hours of that slog will commit the new scheme to muscle memory, and you will get all the spirits too. A lot of the World of Light battle mechanics are strange, so it's usually bad for practicing Smash in general. However, for something as basic as (re)learning the control scheme, it's fine.
Hugo Canedo It is one of the most comfortable and one of the more precise controller to use for smash. I usually always try to go for that controller set up because it feels more natural to use that controller and I usually don’t have any misread button inputs with the controller 😂. Plus grind on a pro controller is a pain in the butt to deal with.
@John Riley theres some really precise tech more used in the pro scene recently which requires diagonal input left and c-stick flicks on precise timings (and i dont mean terry pretzel inputs) which are way easier on a gc controller with the 8 corner grid layout for sticks
I would choose the Switch Pro Controller because it works on all Switch models including the Switch Lite. The GameCube controller will only work on the GameCube, the original Switch and the upcoming OLED Switch.
I actually have a pro controller at the moment and use joycons anyway with smash stick because I play falco and i never really misinput a tilt, uh tips for fellow joycon boys. Make stick sensitivity low. Uh dont be too rough on ur sticks unless u like joycon drift
Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, you can still easily move your shield with only one shield shoulder button. Just hold your shield trigger and B at the same time, then tilt the stick and you get easy shield tilting Except inkling mains, because no one likes inkling
personally, my 8bitdo snes controller is the best i've used. it has dual toggles like most modern controllers, i just prefer the shape since i grew up on snes. if you want something like the snes controller, i'd recommend that.
What's everybody's control setup? I go GCN with Tap Jump off, Rumble off, A+B Smash off, and Stick Sensitivity on normal. L is special, Z is jump, and X is Grab. Everything else is normal. Having the grab button be one of the face buttons instead of two jump buttons makes it so much easier for me and I play with Claw Grip so short hop aerials aren't affected too bad
I honestly really like using joycons, I remap R to jump and set ZR to grab and ZL to shield and now with the added button remapping in the switch home screen I can also remap L to smash if I wanted to. I jump a lot as a luigi and G&W player, so R jumping and R+X short-hopping feels very comfortable. I do have a GCC tho, and with that I am struggling to decide whether I should -have Z be grab and R be jump -have Z be jump and R be grab
I normally play with an entire Switch for games, including Smash. I have Stick Jump usually off so I can use up attacks without jumping, especially when I do Up Air combos like Mario has. Though with Bayonetta's combos needing to use a double jump for Witch Twist to be used, I may make a separate scheme for her. Mostly, I'm using the default controls since it's similar to Smash Wii U, which I probably played the most when it came out.
I use a PowerA controller with 2 extra buttons on the back where your fingers rest. I map one to jump (for the same reason as the shoulder jump config) and I map the other to grab
i actually like the joycons because theyre small. less travel with the joysticks and buttons are close together and less clicky. the bumpers also have little travel too
Honestly though, the only big differences between a grounded and aerial up b are with bowser and DK. And if you're trying to up out of shield with DK, then read up. DA is always the better option.
I actually like to map grab to the x button on the gamecube controller, that way my grab is right next to my jump (the y button). I remember my friends always bashing on me for doing this, but idk man it feels faster and more comfortable than hitting z for me.

I bought a NYXI controller that is shaped like the GameCube version I enjoy it and it also has a lot of versatility with the amount of devices I can pair/connect to
if you want to be a luigi main and learn the zero to death make sure to turn stick jump off or you cannot land the u-air in the combo
Quick tip: two jump buttons at once is always a short hop.
yea
Here’s my control map
(I use Dual Joycon, planning to get Pro Controller soon)
Buttons And Analog
R Stick goes on Tilt for me
I have a very hard time trying to move the L stick slowly and knowing when to press attack
On the other hand, Smash Attacks are much easier for me to do and I can input them much faster
R Stick Tilt also helps me dash into Tilt attack, for when I’m playing something like Roy, or really any character with high end lag dash attacks
X is jump for comfort
Y is attack for comfort, and because it’s near jump I can short hop aerial much better and it helps a lot.
A is Special, near jump for the same reason
B I don’t really care about, I just put it on Special if I miss input A, which barely happens.
D pad I don’t use
For L and R/ZL and ZR I put Shield on L and Grab on R for comfort, as of other games I play, like Hollow Knight or Metroid Dread (specifically just Metroid, as you can’t change controls in that game) where L is a movement option while R is a type of attack.
Advanced Settings
Rumble is off but I might turn it on just because I might be able to handle Rumble, but for now it’s off.
Attack + Special Smash attack is off
Stick Jump is off
Stick Sens is on normal, I just don’t see the difference turning it low or high
And I think that’s it.
My set up is this
-pro controller
-tilt stick
-rumble off, tap jump off
-senstivity high
-a b smash on
-zr jump
-r special
-y attack
-a jump
Everything else is the same
I'm new to competitive smash so getting used to these controls wasn't that hard. I have a shoulder buttons mapped to jump because it makes short hope aerials easy and some advanced tech easier to perform without needing claw grip.
Special is for easier wave bounces
Attack is set to Y because it's closer to the control stick and I play zelda a lot so it's more intuitive for me.
I like the Pro Controller I own for the AGL and AGR buttons, I have jump on AGR which makes aerials SO easy to combo.
My setup:
D PAD: Taunts
C STICK: Tilt attacks
A: Jump
B: Special
Y: Attack
X: Jump
L: Jump
R: Grab
ZR: Shield
ZL: Grab
When I play Ganondorf, C STICK is smash attack
dude yessss zackray, thank you!!! just put grab as my side d-pad button. now i can perform z drops flawlessly!!! :)
Making B and Y set to jump makes it immensely easier to short hop. You just have to use your thumb to press both buttons at the same time.
@@guessimlatetotheparty2923 sorry that is what I meant. I am used to the xbox layout lol. I use A and Y to jump.
Shield on a shoulder button makes Peach and Daisy's float much easier to hold
If you change your controls and haven't done World of Light and grinded the Spirit Board (plus Summoning, etc.), it's a pretty good excuse to kill two birds with one stone.
Forty hours of that slog will commit the new scheme to muscle memory, and you will get all the spirits too.
A lot of the World of Light battle mechanics are strange, so it's usually bad for practicing Smash in general. However, for something as basic as (re)learning the control scheme, it's fine.
yea
0/10 they didn't teach me how to use the Slime Controller
I don’t play tournaments or anything but I wish I was god tier only because I’d love to troll people by crushing them with one of those 😆
That is not a legal controller
I’ve seen tournament footage of someone using a single joycon
Why do you care about the joy cons anyway
Zackray doesn't use the procontroller anymore
@John Riley GC -.-"
@John Riley Oh, I don't know, let me ask him real quick -.-"
Hugo Canedo It is one of the most comfortable and one of the more precise controller to use for smash. I usually always try to go for that controller set up because it feels more natural to use that controller and I usually don’t have any misread button inputs with the controller 😂. Plus grind on a pro controller is a pain in the butt to deal with.
@John Riley theres some really precise tech more used in the pro scene recently which requires diagonal input left and c-stick flicks on precise timings (and i dont mean terry pretzel inputs) which are way easier on a gc controller with the 8 corner grid layout for sticks
@@hugocanedo3387 -_-"
I would choose the Switch Pro Controller because it works on all Switch models including the Switch Lite. The GameCube controller will only work on the GameCube, the original Switch and the upcoming OLED Switch.
One day a legend will be born that only uses the donkey Kong drums to win tournaments
I actually have a pro controller at the moment and use joycons anyway with smash stick because I play falco and i never really misinput a tilt, uh tips for fellow joycon boys. Make stick sensitivity low. Uh dont be too rough on ur sticks unless u like joycon drift
In other words, do what you want
Nice video, thanks Proguides
Did anybody else flinch when they said “NES” and showed an SNES controller?
Or "MKLeo" but shows ZeRo
@@guthetanuki256 Oh the humanity.
Thank you I can now chain 3-4 times with no problem
I switch the special button (b) and the the jump button (x). I also used tilt stick
Your thumb can easily hit Y and A at the same time for quick aerials
Inferior method though. Less drift
Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, you can still easily move your shield with only one shield shoulder button. Just hold your shield trigger and B at the same time, then tilt the stick and you get easy shield tilting
Except inkling mains, because no one likes inkling
I dunno if I'm just weird but I put all the shoulder buttons as shield, X as grab for both game cube and pro controller and jump for just the Y
Tilt stick is ok but I really wish their was an option to remove smash from the A button and have that be just tilts and keep smash to c stick
It's just bananas that they don't have full controller mapping.
Thank you for the tip about the tilt stick. I was always doing smash attacks, and the CPU was punishing me for it :|
personally, my 8bitdo snes controller is the best i've used. it has dual toggles like most modern controllers, i just prefer the shape since i grew up on snes. if you want something like the snes controller, i'd recommend that.
Rate my setup
A-Jump
B-Attack
Y-grab
X-Special
Left stick-Tilt
Left and right bumpers-Shield
🙏🙏🙏
Got the notification 5 days after upload, nice job RUclips
On GameCube or standard controllers I just change C stick to tilt. Done
My controlls on pro controller are
A= Attack
B= Jump
Y= Special
X= Grab
LR= Shield
ZLR= Grab
RightStick:Smash
Shoulder button as jump is literally a cheat code
I do have a GCC tho, and with that I am struggling to decide whether I should
-have Z be grab and R be jump
-have Z be jump and R be grab
I normally play with an entire Switch for games, including Smash. I have Stick Jump usually off so I can use up attacks without jumping, especially when I do Up Air combos like Mario has. Though with Bayonetta's combos needing to use a double jump for Witch Twist to be used, I may make a separate scheme for her. Mostly, I'm using the default controls since it's similar to Smash Wii U, which I probably played the most when it came out.
Mentions "pros like MKLeo"
> proceeds to show ZeRo in the same second as mentioning Leo
Lessgooo
I use a PowerA controller with 2 extra buttons on the back where your fingers rest. I map one to jump (for the same reason as the shoulder jump config) and I map the other to grab
yea
Change one of the shoulder buttons to jump And tilt stick to attack cancel bair
i actually like the joycons because theyre small. less travel with the joysticks and buttons are close together and less clicky. the bumpers also have little travel too
Doesn’t mention how u can map 2 bumpers to jump and press them at the same time for easy consistent short hops.
I needed this
Oh thank god it feels good knowing I'm not the only one who maps B to jump and X to special.
I am new to Nintendo used to only xbox but I loooove the game cube controller.
Honestly though, the only big differences between a grounded and aerial up b are with bowser and DK. And if you're trying to up out of shield with DK, then read up. DA is always the better option.
My control scheme be like
L: JUMP
Y: grab
All the other shoulder buttons: shield
C stick: tilt
the rest is normal
I told my friends my and they thought i was crazy
R jump
L grab
Z shield
X shield
C-Stick tilt
No tap jump

Wish Nintendo would add Short Hop as an option. There's no reason to have more than one regular jump button.
If you press both jumps together it's a short hop
U can press x and y at the same time to short hop easier or even x/y and a to do a easy short hop aerial
I've always used the plain controls with my right stick being tilt.
I set R tp jump, L to grab, right stick to tilt (and still get smash atacks out of it 🤦♀️). Everything else is normal
I actually like to map grab to the x button on the gamecube controller, that way my grab is right next to my jump (the y button). I remember my friends always bashing on me for doing this, but idk man it feels faster and more comfortable than hitting z for me.
