Thank you! This is a great comparison of two cameras, but even better: a thoughtful reflection on how we are influenced in our decisions. In the urgency we can feel about upgrading we can easily forget to use what we already have. “I’m not your enemy but I’m also not your friend. Play your own game.”

REAL GAME CHANGING FEATURES OF IV IS ONLY FEW. 4:2:2 10BIT INTERNALLY. HIGHER RES PHOTOS, AND ABILITY TO SAVE AND LOAD SETTINGS FROM SAVED FILE (HANDY FOR THOSE WHO SHARE THEIR CAMERAS). THAT'S IT. New menu-nothing better than old, new evf -nice but old is good too, articulating screen-who cares.

Colors: HUUUGE Difference, weird bonding and some creepy behavior of "3", and virtually useless slog3 in "3"; 8bit vs 10bit - big difference in my opinion, also... I quite didn't understand comparing dynamic range with a bunch of trees in the background.... can you spot the notice? probably not. I would try something like bright windows in a dark room instead. IS again its a huge upgrade - agreed. Cheers

As someone who recently got into full frame for the first time with an A7III, I'm thoroughly enjoying it and am not really finding the body the limiting factor for what I do, but flip screen and the 4k60 of the A7IV have honestly made me really wish I'd spent a bit more and gotten the A7IV instead, as using something like the Monitor+ app for monitoring is pretty annoying and the 120fp 1080p isn't really usable for me.

As my dear old mother would say, '"different horses for different courses". I've had the A7III for 4 years and as a photographer, the A7IV is not something I'd bother upgrading to. Whilst the bump in resolution might be handy when doing extreme crops, everything else new in the A7IV is video centric and of no interest to me. I've used the video mode exactly once in 4 years, so moving the video button to the top is just annoying. Hopefully this can be just be an option in settings in the A7V rather than forced on everyone. It would be nice to have better articulation than on the A7III screen but a flippy screen? No thanks. If you're a hybrid shooter or videographer, the A7IV is probably a tempting upgrade but "newer" doesn't equal "better" for all use cases. All that glitters is not gold, as sequins stick surprisingly well to a turd.

Just like phones most upgrades are features only. IQ is not noticeably different. Having said that, is the Eye AF better. Flippy Screen, grip, customization etc.? Yes. So, is it worth it? It depends. Can you get equal pay from gigs? Yes. These upgrades are all good but not necessary, yet they may be more enjoyable and make your work (or fun) easier.

I have the A7III but I'm thinking about purchasing the A7IV just because I want and can afford it. I mostly do street photography and only have one lens, which is the Sony 85mm 1.8. However, if I purchase the A7IV then I will also buy Sony's 35mm 1.4 GM lens, which is currently on sale where I'm located.
I could definitely tell the difference between the cameras because there's a clear difference in the colors between two camera. The colors may be more pronounced to me because I'm viewing the video on one of the new Apple Macs that have the mini-LED screens. In addition, the A7IV is slightly sharper than the A7III. Nevertheless, buying one or the other literally comes down to the user's needs. If you're looking at either of these cameras and are just using them to take pictures/video to post on social media or RUclips, then obviously go with the cheaper camera because the average person isn't going to be able to tell the difference. If you were able to download the raw videos or photos and play around with them in post then you'd probably be able to separate the two cameras.
Anyways, great video as I agree with a lot of your points. Keep up the good work.

Great video, I have a friend, who has the 7IV and towards us the only difference was in the stabilization, exactly as you revealed, but a good gimball is enough for this.
Moreover, the owner of the 7IV tested the FX3, and then didn't buy it because the video performance was only slightly better, but he lost the photo compartment.
In the photos, is my opinion the 7III better than that of the 7IV, expecilly the skin more natural
On the 10 bit issue I did some tests with a 14 bit Canon 5dmk2 with Magic Lantern and with bit depth RAW in situations like sunrise and sunset there is a palpable difference in the color, but I have see the same , in 7SIII + NinjaV in Prores......Big Big file = Better Buality.....................

Look, I understand that you like the A7IV a lot better, but calling the A7III a dinosaur because of a different menu, smaller buttons and hand grip feels like an overstatement. If you could no longer keep the A7III due to the improvements on the A7IV (and I don't think they were massive, especially for photography), you might be suffering from GAS.

@@SneakyCaleb If you specifically need to use the real-time tracking autofocus, then yes, it locks on much better than the A7III, but I disagree that the AF on the A7III is, as a whole, not great. I take pictures of tiny songbirds with the A7III and Tamron 150-500 and I get fantastic results. It also tracks movement well in wide or zone AF, including birds in flight. Eye/face AF is also great. To me the only major difference is the real-time tracking, which I wouldn't use very often anyway. Things like bird eye AF are nice to have, but not deal breakers. The A7IV is newer, so of course it's going to have better features; no argument there. But is it so much better that people should absolutely make the upgrade? That's subjective and debatable. Still, to call the A7III a dinosaur is an exaggeration.
I had a Nikon D7000 and waited until the A7IV came out to decide on an upgrade. To me, as someone who doesn't make a living with photography, the price difference between the A7IV and the A7III, which was on sale and included a fast memory card and an extra battery, didn't justify the improvements, so I got the A7III. I don't really do videography, which is what got the biggest upgrades on the A7IV. 4K 24 with 8 bit is plenty for my purposes. I could also have gone for the A7C, since it also has real-time tracking, but the EVF is tiny and the physical buttons are lacking.

      Glad that I helped you!
A7III also can be a game player in a low light shooting, depending on lenses.
It doesn't have be super expensive, but I recommend some F2 or F1.8 lenses, such as Sigma 20mm F2.

I think the higher color bit depth is very handy if not essential once you need to make color adjustments or apply HDR effects. So perhaps the differences between the cameras become more tangible once you start to edit the images.

Another excellent and well balanced review Kensei !
Ergonomically, I think they went backwards with the MK IV (with the exclusion of the bigger grip).
I prefer to have the C1 & C2 buttons on the top which is easier for me to access with my index finger (and avoids using the menu), and I prefer to have a dedicated EV wheel with the +/- markings so I can see at a glance what it is currently set to and can be preset without turning the camera on (all quite useful when you need to move fast). Most of the reviews enthusiastically talk about how you can now "customise the EV wheel"... but I'm yet to hear a practical use that would be better than the way it is on the MKIII, justifying the loss of the visual cue, off-line presetting and mechanical hard stop.
I don't like "flippy" screens either. I always shoot video in landscape so having to pull the screen out to the side and then rotate it to see it on low or high angles, instead of a simple quick pull is a little annoying and I don't like it extending outside of the body. I don't think I've ever needed shoot stills in portrait at low or high angles and need to angle the rear screen, which only the flip screen can do.
The flip screens might be good for selfies (if that's your thing), but for me they are slower to use and are an accident waiting to happen especially for fast 'run and gun' shoots.
I don't get the obsession with the new menu. After setting the custom buttons, FN and custom menu I've not needed to navigate the MKIII menu again. It's a total non-issue for me. I go straight to everything I need from a dedicated button (from AF & exposure modes, drive speed, log/Cine profiles, ISO, White balance, 4k or 1080 slow mo...etc.). So if the MK IV had the old menu I wouldn't actually care.
I rarely have a problem with the AF on the III for most situations, but sure, the extra stop in low light focus would be good - occasionally, 4k 60, yep that would be nice - occasionally, continuous eye AF... useful occasionally (like if I needed to do an extreme closeup with a 1.4 aperture), 10bit video would be useful - occasionally (especially with poorly lit shots that needed accurate colour masks which are not fun to do with 8bits) .... but none of it added up to be that much of a real world, day-to-day practical difference to me, and I prefer the button layout of the MK III.
When added to the little difference in overall IQ (I doubt many would be able to tell the difference between the video and stills from a MK III and IV after a bit of post), it was an easy decision for me. I kept my MKIII.

I get the point the 7iii is good enough and you are used tu it but the new one simply is better. If someone has the money he or she wont regret buying the new one.

@@castielvargastv7931 Actually, I don't think you get the point at all, especially judging by comments you have made elsewhere.
An A1 is "simply better" than an A7IV but that doesn't automatically make it a "better" choice of camera for everyone, regardless of how much money they may have.
Kensei has done a good job to demonstrate that the difference in image quality is relatively subtle which is also what I observed in my own tests.
So, it comes down to how important the other incremental upgrades are; maybe cropped 4k60 has been giving you wet dreams... for others, it might not be so exciting.
      Neither position is wrong, therefore...
If someone has the money and can't decide between a III or IV, I'm confident that he or she won't regret saving some cash by not buying the new one.
Either way they will get a superb level of image quality.
      Like Kensei said, relax...
