I will repeat the obvious already stated by many that this video is one of the best tutorials on YT on how to set up a camera. How can I buy you a coffee as a token of appreciation? 🙏
I'm not sure why you don't have thousands of more subscribers. I look to you for all my Sony, Nikon and Leica reviews and tutorials. The amount of research and time you must invest in all the work is just astounding. We are truly blessed to have you as a viable resource. I appreciate your efforts. Thank you.
Essential video for anyone really wanting to setup and use their Sony a7R5 camera. Worth watching with your camera several times to get everything out of it. Thorough yet succinct. Great for stills and video controls. This guy knows the a7r5 camera. Highly recommend viewing.
I collected my A7rv a few hours ago. No doubt I will be watching this a few times over the next couple of days! Thanks for all your work to put this amazing video together.
Absolutely fantastic video! I sincerely appreciate the level of depth and detail in this wonderful demonstration. Thank you so much for taking the time and making the effort to help us learn how to maximize the potential of this phenomenal camera! *Liked, commented, and subscribed*
This is such a great tutorial! Thank you so much for doing it. One thing that I do to all my Sony cameras, that might be interesting to other users, is set the Fn button to "rating" in Payback mode. That way when I am viewing the photos onsite, I can quickly rate favorites to 4 stars and pull them up by rating in Lightroom when I get home. I so appreciate the part about assigning a custom button to memory recall numerous settings. That is the first time I have seen that and it worked on my A1. I ordered the A7RV today and that is what brought me here. Thanks again!
Thank you for your little tip! I always think the last photo of the same layout will be the one I use, but sometimes that’s not the case and I’m always going back and forth on Lightroom which photo I wanted to use
You have nice toys. I can only afford to have a used Sony A7R3. But it is good enough for me since I am not a professional as others like you. Heck, the A1 is like owning a Rolls Royce!
I agree, this is a great tutorial. I have learned quite a bit by following this video. Thank you for putting together the time and effort putting it together.
sir just now i purchased sony 7 rv and iam newer to sony...regular iam canon user and nikon,,,by seeing your video got more confident in sony...thank you sir...sir can i use canon 70-200mm to sony with adapter,,is it good or only sony lens...please
Excellent video. Thank you for making and sharing. I have a question: around the 1:36:00 mark, Focus Magnifier, if set to AF-C the focus magnifier says cannot be used as it conflicts with AF-C. Any thoughts? Thanks.
Fantastic tutorial, so thorough, clear and logical. Some features I will never use but it is beneficial to now, what this new camera is capable of. Thank you very much for investing so much time in studying and sharing this information.
This is the best video I've watched. I've watched hours and hours of other videos and there are always gaps. I was able to setup my camera completely AND understand what I was doing watching your video. Thank you
Thank you for this deeply informative tutorial. I just switched up from the A7IV, and find the new features of the A7V, which you've beautifully explained, will be really helpful to my work flow.
Taking a moment at the halfway point to let this tutorial marinate. Contemplating switching from Nikon. While I’ve had a Sony A7II for years, its primary use is a glorified p&s. Currently using the Z6II, D500 and Z9 for sports, wildlife and events. Wonder if Sony’s tracking and stabilization features are more accurate, intuitive and worth the switch? I don’t totally love the Z9… just not the same enthusiasm like I had for the d500. Your tutorial has motivated me to dig into this A7II’s menus so I can exploit and understand what I already have before testing the A9II and this camera in the upcoming months. Anyone else out there made the switch? I would appreciate your constructive thoughts. Thank you MATH for this incredibly, well thought out menu breakdown.
Thanks for the positive feedback! So far whenever I shoot the a7RV I am very pleased with the outcome and since I shoot Sony A7s since the first A7 came to market many years back, I am also very familiar with handling, features, menus, etc. But clearly, you need to get used to handling and workflow. I am glad to hear that the video helped in this regard :)
I could not find a way to assign a custom button to shoot stills in APS-C mode. Lets say I want a bit of crop in (and willing to give up some resolution). I thought my A7R3 had this. any help ?
Thank you ! I have a 600 page tutorial ( on my computer & iPad ) for the RX 100Vii which I own. I am now evaluating a purchase of a full frame or aps-c ) camera. This tutorial one Sony a7R V has convinced me to stay with Sony. The menus are very similar between the Sony cameras and to me that is a big advantage. Of course the a7r V is by all measures an awesome camera. I’ll now rent one and see if I like the ergonomics.
Hi Math! Very useful video, thanks! While I was following it step-by-step noticed that the menu in my camera is different. I have 55 pages, while your shows 57 pages in total. I do not have e.g., Focus Map and 2 pages of functions are a lot to miss. And yes, I have the firmware 2.0, just checked. Any clue?
Math, wow. Thank you so much for this thorough video. I just upgraded to a Sony A7RV, and I spent two days in your video. I have a question that I think you did not touch and it is PHASE DETECT option. Do you recommend this setting always of just for moving people or objects? . Thanks again for your effort.
Wow! So much great content! And I really like the way you used Jennifer and Darth Vader figures to demonstrate focusing! LOL! Very clever. I have had multiple Sony cameras and for each one I rely heavily on the excellent instructional videos by Mark Galer. Yet it was so helpful to also view your video. You approach it differently and cover slightly different settings. And you both explain things differently. So even though I have set up my a7r5 leveraging my experience with other Sony cameras and Mark Galer’s videos I still chose to change/refine a number of settings based on this video. Most helpful! BTW, I learned of this video from a Facebook group for a7r5 owners. Lots of people on that group who are new to Sony and/or the a7r5.
Many thanks Dan, appreciate your comment and sharing your experience with the content from Mark Galer and from my channel. Glad the video is helpful, and glad if people share it.
Hello, when in Aperture Priority mode on my SONY A7RV, I set ISO AUTO and Minimum Shutter Speed, the camera does not comply with the selected value of min. shutter speed, and continues to determine it by itself. Why?
i wish I have that camera so that I can follow your instructions. But I could only afford to have a used SonyA7R3, which I now have. I wish my A7R3 have an articulating LCD. Maybe Sony repair stations can do upgrades, eh?
I have watched many of your videos. Great stuff. For a hybrid amateur shooter, mainly social media stills and training videos. Would your preference be Sony A7RV or Leica SL2S? Thank you
@mathphotographer Nice vid! May I ask what kind of anti glare screen protector you are using? Also, is there a way to shoot focus shift mode with extended shutter speed more than 30 sec? I found bulb timer only kicks in when you shoot single frame mode :(
I have a problem with a lot of noise with this camera. Can you advise how to set up a camera during indoor handball match ? It is similar with birds in flight. How focus birds that they have sharp eyes and sharp featherswings without noise in the photo.I use a 100-400mm lens. Is it better to switch to apsc when shooting birds? Thank you
Am I able to turn the View Finder on and shoot through it while turning the back screen towards the client so they can see themselves? I seen someone doing this on a IG video and I can't figure out if I'm able to do it with the a7r5.
Excellent work! Its amazing how clear you explained it. But I found a little disturbing to see how fast the batteries are draining in the process. I see its not in airplane mode but still, you can literally see the % going down very fast. I hope this is not a real problem from me, specially coming from a dslr where a battery can last for a whole day
That was great, thank you very much. Feels like only a starting point though 😅 Going to take a minute to wrap my head around this camera. My last was a Nikon D3200.
Is it possible to have a button assigned to eye af like on the a73/r3/r4? I can't find it anywhere? I love tracking and stuff but I just want one button to find an eye when held like with the old cameras.
Now I’ve spent hours watching a learning your instructions I am really very impressed - it’s terrific. I few words on exposure and use of highlight mode would have been Everything. Thanks Patrick
Awesome video that proves what I've heard before about Sony menu system. I can't imagine what Sony users have been going through before the new menu. Whatever I used before, Pentax K-1, Fuji X-T4, I was always able to intuitively figure out how to allocate RAW files to a card slot and JPEG files to the other card slot. With the A7RV, I really needed this video. Thanks for that. I will watch it again, rest assured.
Many thanks for your kind feedback. These menus are tricky. I shoot A7 cameras for years and thought, when I worked my way through the settings of this new camera, why not sharing ... :)
Why is the fn Menu setup not affecting the fn menu in the Monitor setting "For viewfinder", when the fn menu is on th right side of the monitor? Am I missing something? Thanks
Hi thanks for the video. I'm having trouble connecting to image edge on my imac desktop. I have the functions set as I did on A7RIV but it displays the camera name showing a connection but I can't open further. Any help would be good.
Do you connect wireless or with USB cable? If via cable, please make sure to use only the USB-C cable which was shipped in the Sony box, other cables typically do not work, I experienced this many times. If you connect wireless, its unfortunately hard to tell remotely what the problem is, could be related to various issues, sorry. Crossing finger ...
Please do indepth review of Sony A7RV with 35mm F1.4 G Master vs Leica M11 with 35mm Lux + 35mm APO F2. Interested to see image comparison and how they render. But if you can go in depth I think this video will get a lot of hits for your channel.
Haven’t got my hands on my A7RV yet but I feel like I already mastered those complicated settings and understanding what the camera is capable of. 😂 Big big thanks to you!🙏🏻 Keep it up 🔥 Btw, of all those very very detail explanation I think I still missing something. How do you set the joystick to re-center on the flexible spot when u click it? Is it the “focus standard” custom button that you set earlier or sth else? I cant figure it out bcs still haven’t got the camera.
Just bought new Sony rv …this videos helped me so much of much… very useful and it saves my time in setting my new Sony Rv …. Can u do video for Rv picture profile , best frame rate and bit rate normal video mode and s and q video mode can u explain those stuffs
Fantástico tutorial, una gran ayuda. Y debes pronunciar muy correctamente porque el traductor automático a español funciona de diez. Enhorabuena, me suscribo a tu canal. Fantastic tutorial, a great help. And you must pronounce very correctly because the automatic translator into Spanish works like a charm. Congratulations, I subscribe to your channel.
Thanks for this and your other videos on the A1. I just gave up on Nikon actually making the lenses I needed for wildlife photography. I have shot Nikon exclusively for over 2 decades - but their inability to manufacture at reasonable volumes that are needed to migrate an installed base form one mount to the new one - finally broke me. So - I went and made a camera salesman happy by getting the A1, the A7RV, the 400 mm f2.8, 600mm f4, and the 200-600. It was almost as painful to my wallet as getting into a Leica system :). So, I’m lost in the new menus and ergonomics- thus the appreciation of your videos!
Many thanks, Refuz. I shot A7 cameras from the very beginning when Sony introduced its first A7 camera. Since then I stayed tuned on these cameras. Nevertheless, I had to work my way through the a7RV and then thought ... why not sharing what I found :)
@@mathphotographer yes - i've reviewed your video twice now - once just to let the basics sink in and another with my camera in-hand for exploration. thanks again for putting the time and energy into this it was quite valuable. it also helps with the A1 since the menu topology are very similar. i also just reviewed your old moon videos and used the bodies and the various lens combinations to create a series of moon photos - since we have a full moon tomorrow night. another valuable bit of content (both the shooting and the editing/post work in Lightroom. (the light room tricks made a huge difference!)
Funny, I also recently switched from Nikon to Sony. The first time for over 3 decades that I use a different manufacturer in the interchangeable mount range of cameras. I need to do more videowork and therefore I went with the FX3 and for studiowork the A7rV. I had waited for too long a time that Nikon would hopefully have a 61MP sensor and better eye AF, not to mention better video capabilities….. They might put out a Z8 this year but I‘m done with waiting.
It’s been said so many times, but yes, excellent video, thank you for taking the time. I’m transitioning from another brand for my paid work to a Sony A7RV and this is going to help massively in getting it set up and me learning it quickly. I was so daunted reading the manuals but this is just brilliant. More or less everything I ever needed to know and a whole lot more. I’ve seen many of your videos in the past, but this is an incredible amount of work.
WOW! This video is fantastic. Not only does it help with setup, but it's packed full of general tips and how to use shooting modes, etc. Thank you for this!
Amazing video! Seriously. I've watched a lot of your videos and never comment, but wow…hats of to you to go through everything in clear, well-presented, thoughtful detail. Thank you!! 🙏
This is an outstanding presentation, which is the best and clearest I've found on the Internet. Extremely nice job. Your explanations helped me significantly in enabling me to set up my new a7rv. Thanks so much. Even though Sony has improved its menu system, I still think that Sony needs to do lots of work to make its system workable. It is extremely difficult to follow instructions regarding making custom settings.
Excellent video. Concise and easy to see which buttons / screen menus do what function. I will be saving this for future reference as there is quite a bit to take it but I can easy navigate to the section I want to review within the video as they are all clearly labelled.
For the Self-timer(Cont) drive mode, is it possible to change the duration between the continuous shots to something like a 1 second interval between each successive photo taken? It seems to take them in rapid succession by default without any clear way to change this...
Thanks for a really great video. Your presentation is perfect and concise. The speed, demonstration examples, and content is really helpful. I just got A7rV. will watch this again and again.
Wow! This tutorial is spot on. The explanations and the speed that you cover everything made me comprehend it without getting lost or feeling overwhelmed. I can't thank you enough!
Excellent, well done video. I've owned many Sony cameras, and this particular camera was intimidating compared to my AR7II. Although long, this video is extremely informative and helped me get through many of the steps to make it operational for my use. Kudos to mathphotographer to put this this long video together on New Year's Eve! Many thanks.
This was great, informative and easy to understand. Thank you for your hardwork and attention to details. much appreciated. Keep up the good work. It's a service.
Thank you for this amazing tutorial! My A7R V came yesterday and I am setting up the menus with some of your tips. Does your camera get warm? Mine was very warm after only 15 minutes of playing with the camera and setting up the menus. Not sure if this is normal or a defective unit. Thank you!
Thanks, Jamil, for your positive feedback. My camera gets a bit warm after some time of use too but not inconveniently warm or hot, feels normal to me. In case of doubt, ask your Sony dealer and demonstrate it to them, let's see what they say. Mine is absolutely in normal range when it comes to heat dissipation.
Recently received my a7R V. This is the most helpful setup instructions by far. I understand my camera way better now. I have been watching this video a few times as there are so many in depth features. Much appreciated!
Sorry, Fareed, likely not. What you could try to do is to take a new Sony a7RV firmware file from Sony US or Europe and try to upgrade the camera with that file. But it is risky and could potentially brick and kill your camera. Best way to look for help is to go to a licensed Sony Center and ask for help.
This is not a video, this is a handbook worth its weight in gold... Thank you for this precious video

If you own and use a Sony A7R5 this is a must watch. Very well done tutorial.
Thanks for the kind feedback.
Great! Thanks for the positive feedback and enjoy your new a7R V.

My A7RV when the dial its on movie and preset 1,2 or 3 its on auto exposure, i havent been able to put it all manual, its so annoying.
You can also use the Fn button to jump through menu items, the same as use the.front wheel.

HI Mathphotographer compare A7R5 & A7CR which is the best overall between this 2 camera. tks
In Shooting Mode, can we get Recall Custom TOGGLE instead of HOLD ? 😮
Fantastic and this is a big help for sure! Congratulations!
By any chance do you have this kind of video for a9iii?

Does the A7VR had IR sensor? If yes, where exactly is it in the settings / menu?
Am here because am about to buy this camera. Thank you for the effort 🥺🥺🥺🥺

Great video but why don’t you set AdobeRGB instead of sRGB? You are essentially throwing away color information due to the smaller colorspace of sRGB!
Good point, I am used to work in sRGB but your argument is spot-on.

What screen protector are you using? Can’t seem to locate an anti reflective screen protector
I’ve seen many of your videos in the past, but this is an incredible amount of work.
thanks you o lot ,this with was so helpful,i admire you, it was great
Great content..thanks for taking the time to put all this together sir.
Thank you very much for the video, it helped me a lot, well done.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, may I ask you what RIG are you using (brand, type...link? )? that angled shoe is great idea.
I will show and mention the rig in my next video on the a7RV.
For the Self-timer(Cont) drive mode, is it possible to change the duration between the continuous shots to something like a 1 second interval between each successive photo taken? It seems to take them in rapid succession by default without any clear way to change this...
Fantastic Video. as a first time Sony user this guide is GOLD! thank you very much for the time you've put into this.
Glad it was helpful!
Wow! Thank you so much for the great job done!
This is a solid gold details overview how to use the interface.
Thanks for a really great video. Your presentation is perfect and concise. The speed, demonstration examples, and content is really helpful. I just got A7rV. will watch this again and again.
My new a7R V is due to arrive today, so I looked for setup tips, but didn't expect this much. Thank you!
Great video, but where do I find the histogram?
Is it possible to use the shutter button to record on the A7R5
Excellent video. learn a lot. Thank you!
@@mathphotographer Thank you. That's about what mine does. Thanks again for your tutorial video!
I didn't check all the comments, but I surprised you didn't show the menu is touch sensitive. You may wish to add this to the first section.
Thanks for pointing out, Jim, good add-on remark, should have mentioned that.
This is the best tutorial on this camera setup. Cheers mate.
I'm mesmerized at your command on the subject, and your willingness to share!!! Can't thank you enough!
nice video, my power saving options are on page 9, not 8, perhaps because I have a USA model.
Possible - thanks for sharing.
how do i bound ISO change to Control Wheel?
Thank you for this video! I learned so much. Will be watching again and again as my skills progress. You rock!
Recently received my a7R V. This is the most helpful setup instructions by far. I understand my camera way better now. I have been watching this video a few times as there are so many in depth features. Much appreciated!
anyone can help ?
I bought a (A7R V) (ILCE-7RM5) from China but the camera dose not have English language is there anything i can do ?
Sorry, Fareed, likely not. What you could try to do is to take a new Sony a7RV firmware file from Sony US or Europe and try to upgrade the camera with that file. But it is risky and could potentially brick and kill your camera. Best way to look for help is to go to a licensed Sony Center and ask for help.
@@mathphotographer thank you for your replay
i contacted the store that i bought from, they managed to add English to my camera for $75
Best camera guide ive ever watched. perfectly explained and really helpfull. Thanks!
Just got this camera and was overwhelmed with the menu. But your video was extremely helpful. Thank you!
Thank you sir.Your explanation is very good. Thanks ones more. You helped me a lot.
My pleasure :)
