  • A first-of-its-kind Indian study looked at 36 popular protein powders used in India and found that 70% had inaccurate information about protein content. 14% also contained harmful fungal aflatoxins and 8% showed traces of pesticide residue. Faye D’Souza speaks to Dr Abby Philips aka The Liver Doc who led the study.

But this is quite devastating at multiple levels! Because people choose plant protein because they are lactose and dairy free and many many people are Lactose intolerant, and their priority would obviously be the plant proteins which have been blatantly advertised as the healthiest, vegan, green, blah blah option! And it turns out that it is harming the people more than the lactose intolerance itself! This is literally like giving poison to the people! And most importantly, BJP definitely has their hands into this being the central government bodies which approve such companies which manufacture sub-standard and adulterated supplements as well as medicines! This is impossible that they aren't regulated, they are being sold with GST and taxes and with the FSSAI approved certificates which is yet again approved by the Government! And this has amplified thousand times after BJP has come into power, and obviously we know now that for electoral bonds and money they have approved many shell companies as well as counterfeit food producing companies. The amount of turmeric which we consumer normally, while cooking, is perfectly safe. But if you take high concentrations in large quantities its not safe. All plants have developed a defense mechanism to protect itself against microbes. These are natural chemicals that the plants have developed through evolution. Spices are especially those plants which have a higher concentration of these chemicals. So consuming them in small quantities will provide anti microbial benefits for you. But large quantities of the same chemical which kills the microbe, will start harming your body.

While there might not be stats on the efficiency of ayurvedic medicines, there is family history of individuals being cured for different diseases. Some of them were cured for wheezing, some for sinus and many such concerns. Now are these cures subject to other side effects from these medicines? Or are they genuine full coverage cures? It's confusing, because if something worked for many people, how can that not be considered as "no evidence" on effeciency?

Sir, even this study might suffer from handicaps if govt is unwilling to accept it. the objective of this study was to find protein content in protein powders commercially available is understood, but commenting beyond the scope of the experiment itself is flawed. Eg saying no study to claim benifit of curcumin which FDA approves, to reject ashwagandha outrightly despite RCTs ,smacks of bias and burden of proof lies on you. Nevertheless, the study itself in this huge dark supplement market is much appreciated.

I read the entire journal. I did get the jist of the reason behind doing this study, but there is barely any information about the quality of contents in specific brands. Only a few plant based protein and herbal supplements have been mentioned having toxins but beyond that nothing. To be fair its not his job to name these brands out like this if he is not sure about it because if it turns out to be innacurate he'll have to face law suits. Wished he specified more on whey proteins because that's what most of us consume anyway

I went through the study and unfortunately find this whole study a bit biased towards sensationalizing the study, I live in India and I consume Isopure and Ace Blend , but they are not even in he study , a lot of protein brands are missing . To say that 70% of protein is mislabeled there sample set is small , also Ace Blend is a plant based protein, I am surprised they have not used it here

Good research on the protein powder. But this person is pure science. Can't speak about "Ayurvedic Supplements" but Ayurveda is way ahead of modern science and most practical. First you should read, practice and then discredit such a valuable guide for health. If a person follows Ayurveda, they won't have to go to see doctor in their lifetime for any common illnesses.

Without naming the brands its a useless video.. In our daily usage also, there are lot of packaged food products which are mostly unsafe for health. So the black sheeps are there everywhere. Protein is a very important source for our body, especially vegetarians who are physically active, weight lifting, Athletes etc they cannot get their full Protein from their veg food diets bcz they need to control the carbs & fats also. So Whey protein helps there.

  • @ThePragunjain

    This study is flawed ;-
The method used to calculate protein content is based on amount of nitrogen present in the sample which is only present in protein and not in fats or carbs but nitrogen is also present in creatine also which can inflate the protein content which happened with nitro tech whey protein.
Also if the deviation is in 5-10% then it’s considered accurate as no testing method is 100% accurate so by that logic 30 out of 36 protein brands justify the labels
