because human is a social animal.
On the one hand, we would like to make our own decision, but on the other, we wish to live a life that either also benefits the people around us; or atleast avoid violating some kind of laws/morals.
But sometimes these cannot be figured out by our own, it has to go through some kind of communication with other human beings. That's why we have professional consultants.
Therefore, it isn't wrong for your father to give such reply, but neither are you wrong for asking such questions.

In middle and high school, my parents chose my school subjects for me, and when I told my classmates everyone told me "aren't you going to be the one that has to study those subjects? Shouldn't you study what you want to know?" I didn't know what to say. I thought my parents knew best but I'm finding out just how wrong they really were. "I'm 34 and I still can't find motivation or purpose." Wow... it's like -I- wrote that! Actually, over this last year, I've found more purpose in just serving others... I don't have a regular job or career, but by volunteering at my local spiritual center and at drum circles and other similar events I've been attending, I have found enjoyment and I receive a lot of appreciation. That turned into odd jobs helping people with heavy things, yard work, installing hardware, and most recently, even running errands and helping with research projects (which I'm enjoying more than the manual labor, haha). I still don't feel like I have a well-defined purpose, but at least it is -something-.

I found out about this no talking rule after the fact 😅. Got a result I did not expect to happen and excitedly I shared the whole experience the very next day with my husband. That was the first and last time it happened. The anticipation truly is a killer, and after this talk I actually believe it was not even a result, but one of the early stage distractions. On the other hand I have not been meditating for very long and I had a non-spiritual goal in mind anyways, so it still feels like an easy come easy go type situation. But to have 20 years of practice and to be aware of the consequences and still share it... Guess we truly are his annoying mob of dharma, that demands sacrifice in order to grow. This is a long video to listen to repeatedly, but I'm absolutely going to.

40:41 🔄 *Dharma is clarified as constant support or living in harmony with the world's changing circumstances, aiming to fulfill one's purpose virtuously.*
41:27 🔄 *Dr. K acknowledges the interconnectedness of Dharma, ARA, GMA, and Moka in alleviating dukka, debunking the notion that Dharma alone is a coping mechanism.*
45:42 🍕 *Understanding suffering involves addressing Dukkha (D), Artha (A), Kama (K), and Dharma (D), collectively contributing to alleviating suffering.*
46:50 💰 *Modern society overly emphasizes Artha (wealth) and Kama (pleasure) while neglecting Dharma (duty/righteousness), leading to unfulfilling lives despite material success.*
49:06 🚶 *Dharma doesn't necessarily eliminate suffering but makes it tolerable or even chosen, allowing individuals to opt for the path of pain with a compelling reason.*
51:39 🌟 *Dharma is efficient in moving towards a life of reduced suffering, creating a sense of purpose and harmony by choosing the hard but meaningful path.*
01:05:57 🌅 *Life's harmony: Reflect on whether your life feels fluid, harmonious, and refreshing, or if it's filled with friction. Identify areas causing friction, even small ones like skipping meals.*
01:07:54 🧠 *Motivation mechanism: Understand the interplay between the prefrontal cortex (PFC) for value generation and the nucleus accumbens for motivation. Big dreams may diminish the perceived value of daily tasks.*
01:11:38 🚶‍♂️ *Self-care: Prioritize taking care of your body. Start with a daily one-hour walk, ensuring self-discipline in maintaining physical health and well-being.*

01:16:17 🌐 *External vs. Internal guidance: Seeking answers externally creates friction. Understand your uniqueness, and introspect to reconnect with internal guidance, avoiding the influence of external pressures.*
01:24:32 🤔 *Introspection for Dharma: Spend more time introspecting, away from external influences. Recognize that the world may try to convince you of desires, but true self-discovery requires disconnecting from external pressures.*
01:25:43 🧘‍♂️ *Embrace introspection, spend time with yourself, go for a walk, and take care of your body as starting steps in discovering your Dharma.*
01:27:51 🎮 *Life is like a video game; you don't get your Dharma (life purpose) until you complete the tutorial (smaller life tasks). Your readiness determines when your purpose unfolds.*
01:29:00 🌱 *Overcoming challenges in life, even as you level up, doesn't make life easier. Your responsibilities and challenges grow, but facing them is part of your evolving Dharma.*
01:31:48 💪 *Your Dharma is about taking care of yourself and doing what needs to be done, even if it's not glamorous or grand. It involves embracing responsibilities and lifting the weight of life.*
01:33:27 🔄 *Dharma is not about waiting for a grand purpose; it's about doing what needs to be done, even if you don't want to. It's about increasing the harmony of your life.*
01:41:57 🚶‍♂️ *Start with simple actions like taking a walk, eating healthier, exercising, and socializing. Dharma begins with small steps, and as you progress, the world supports you in unexpected ways.*
01:44:13 🧠 *Be rigorous in controlling your mind; recognize that external influences, like advertising, aim to shape your behavior by conditioning your thoughts. Conditioning often serves the world's interests, not necessarily yours.*
01:46:45 🔄 *Motivation and inclination: Motivation is sought because it represents a natural inclination within individuals to move in a particular direction. Lack of motivation implies a struggle to control one's desires.*

I love this video and how you also accidentally gave the best singing/vocal lesson whilst explaining chanting. to become a good singer, is to learn to be completely present with your voice and in time you gain awareness of all of the muscles in the throat that are so quick to run in and "protect" your voice from breaking. but you need to relax into your voice breaking in order to strengthen the correct muscle. I have noticed since relaxing into my voice, this same concept is applicable to every area of my life. when I'm playing piano, I have to *actively* relax my fingers, then I improve much more quickly. In relationships, I have to relax into vulnerability. When doing work/school, I have to relax into boredom.

What I really like about buddhism that I don't find in other religions is that it acknowledges boredom. And meditation really helped me with that. I can just close my eyes and focus on my breath and the present moment, and time passes so quickly. Sometimes I can just turn a switch in my mind to go from feeling bored to not feeling bored and I feel content.

I started watching this video yesterday and this morning I woke up early to meditate. And now I'm up hours before I have to leave for work and I'm just, like, Damn, I guess I'll roast some veggies and pack a healthy lunch for work later? Study some Japanese kanji? I have so much time!
What I mean to say is: thank you for the motivation. You speaking the truth alone is what helped me.

    Notes thus far
Create harmony over friction. Not just feeling good but what seems most intuned with yourself, which requires introspection or time with yourself. Regardless of the task, there are steps to get to that point which means being okay with doing the "tutorial" parts without self hate. If there is self hate that's part of the introspection to ask "why" and "where" this is.
I am not you and you are not me. We all have our own tasks that we may be the only person to do that thing. Everyone's paths and true "purpose" is different not set in stone, not just based on status quo. Social media and ads are one in the same trying to persuade and control you to go down another path.
Hard things are hard, thus is life, so make it easier by breaking it down and asking what is the contrary to if you do it versus not doing it.
    GOODNESS FOR YA
Take walks, eat healthier, exercise, meditate, socialize with others, engage in pleasure (with focus on that one thing), security and wealth = dharma.
    Personal comments :
"I think without a good enough why, the action has no reason compared to your instinct to compulsively indulge in other pleasurable things. Finding that why probably requires more introspection versus looking for external pleasure, which includes creating harmony with the smaller and larger aspects of life. Though at the end of the day, all of this coping is hurting having that time with looking inward which would help me to just do the thing and feel at peace or in harmony with my effort and pains from the action compared to the result."
Learn to be bored and meditate. Avoid wants all the time. Try hard things. Just because you feel like you don't want to do something doesn't mean you control those wants. Doesn't mean you will be satisfied after. Most of the time you control doing that thing you will be content with that. Control what you can control and let the rest be. You do not need wants.
Just like creating and eating food to satisfy hunger could take time to do, so does treating the mind with meditation. It takes time so trust the process and keep that reason up there. -"I am doing the Brahteaahbrahbrah and dukthala thingy to help me with my long term lack of purpose and disregulation with myself, by first I assume feeling all this that is within me, and then focusing on a point in front of me to focus on the nothing, being content and intuned with myself rather than unfocused and just wandering through life."
AHHHH OOHHHHH MMMMMMMM = the brah tea
fasé uno = just do the thing
Second fasé = do the thing but loud to make your neighbors hear but you don't care because you don't notice the body screw them but also they don't exist- focus on the noticing the sensation in the navel - throat and chest - chin to top of head body
Focus on movement of vibration. Steps a lot.
step... next : tune you body and voice by making it flow together and getting the exact timing correct. All the body is moving and being focused and tuned. Like you're chanting something to summon somethin' and putting in the work to get that dragonball fusion technique absolutely perfect y'know find that perfect vibration brah man. What else you feel - notice non physical structures and lower voice to get there.
Write down after what you noticed with all these in sensations and thoughts naturally.
    Surya Namaskar = 5 min
    Nadi shudhi = 5 min
    Ohm chanting = 10 min
20 minutes twice a year every day for a decade.
a lot with diet and dedication. I personally don't need to get to that point. Just meditation in itself is a lot already. If I get to that point where I am meditating then I will decide then if I want to go to the next phase. But right now its that first step. In order to feel in unison with myself. To be okay with living and death. To be okay with love and pain.
OOH I love and hate that one. "I am afraid of heights, so I'm not gonna climb anything." Versus "I am afraid of height, and I went rock climbing today." I am an anxious person and I like to talk to others. Just because I am afflicted with something doesn't mean I am that thing. I can still do things despite the affliction.
Okay Imma try. Despite how hard it gets. There's some level of control over myself.

    Ohm-Chanting meditation steps. (A-u-m)
Range: few months to literally decades.
    20minutes, 2 times per day.
Going from open mouth to closed mouth while making sound/vibration.
    Phases:
    1. Do the practice 20min. Just do sound/vibration.
Sit upright, close eyes, deep breath, a-u-m, repeat.
    2. Pay attention to the vibration, maximize the vibration, feel the vibration in your body
    3. Notice the localization of vibration.
Where do you feel the vibration?
    A: starts in naval/stomach. U: chest/throat. M: chin, head.
    4. Focusing on the movement of the vibration. The vibration is ascending through your body (going up through your body)
    5. Notice that the vibration is lurchy/not smooth. It may feel off.
    6. Making the perfect vibration. Smooth out the Ohm.
-Avoid locking the jaw = relaxation of the jaw.
-Avoid moving from one movement to another movement. Smooth out the movement. One continuous movement.
-Even seconds of the A U M sounds.
-Find the right level of silence between rounds (You will know).
When you perfect the vibration you may start to feel "something else" (weird experiences, eyes looking back at you example).
    7. Slowly decrease the volume / vibration.
As you decrease the chanting you may feel a non-physical structure - a column []. This is Sushumna.
The chanting interferes with the ability to detect Sushumna, which is why you slowly decrease volume/vibration.
As you learn/practice ohm-chanting you start by feeling the vibrations in the frontside of your body but Sushumna is posterior(backside/behind you).
You may notice within Sushumna a non-physical-upward/ascending-energy (Not vibration).
(p.s changed the numbering of the last phases abit compared to video)

2:33:21 This is really the only piece I needed to hear. Thank you so, so much. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate hearing that.
After 20 years of stumbling into the deepest depths of depression and out through this silence and space, without any real guidance, I came to the same conclusion and contentment. And no one else around me gets it, but sees that I’m content. I try to explain why, and they tell me I did it wrong. They say that since I didn’t do the perfect diet, perfect exercise, perfect relationships, I skipped all the “meaningful” stuff. But I didn’t do it wrong. I knew that. But you just confirmed it. Thank you.

It is so absurdly and delightfully ironic that the emotional emptiness that caused mental anguish… was the path to contentment. I am aware of this truth, but all the worldly social bits, all the reasoning and academics of it, made me hesitate to accept it at the mental level. It for it to be acknowledged by a worldly, social, reasonable, academic? I bet this will help that mental acceptance fall into place a little easier.
And I absolutely get the not sharing more about spiritual practice! I feel the same with my young employees. I love them, but I can’t lead them to the right conclusions directly. I guess it’s ok to be ok with that. Thanks for validating the ok-ness.

Dharma is satisfying your needs. This is the most helpful guide/frame I've come to know by Manfred Max Neef:
    1. Identity and dignity
    2. Health and safety
    3. Freedom, responsibility and confidence
    4. Understanding and learning
    5. Effort and creativity
    6. Rest and recreation
    7. Self-esteem and compassion
    8. Connection and participation
There are branches in each of these like in health you have exercise, hydration, nutrition, sleep, hygiene, emotional regulation, etc.
Even Maslow said needs are simultaneous not like the infamous pyramid. It's more like juggling.

I dont tend to comment on RUclips videos but i just wanted to state that i really liked this video. Its probably my favorite members only stream so far.
I feel as though the explanations were very thorough and easy enough to understand, at least for me. I also like that Dr. K was a bit more blunt about some of the issues being self created or self enabled. He states these moments in regular every day youtube videos but he really hit the nail of firm but honest here.
I think the voices also added a nice draw into drawing my attention back in and giving me a bit of comic relief in a video with a lot of information to grasp. Very digestable as someone with inattebtive ADHD who generally kind of floats in and out of youtube videos while doing chores.

i love the point about "your karma will support you", as i've made similar experiences.
when i started my spiritual journey with norse paganism, i learned a similar thing about signs and i quickly noticed that i had become more observant of the world around me, in a way. i wasn't looking for things, but i was noticing more, i simply became more aware.
and over the last few years, i've made many experiences that showed me that the universe just flows in a certain way, for lack of a better expression. and it's been my experience that once you notice this flow, things just kinda go better for you. i guess it's a feeling of being on the right path, so even if it takes an unexpected turn or is a little rocky, there's a lot of peace in the fact that it'll get you where you're supposed to be. and that is usually a good place to be.

yea this idea is pretty broad in buddhism too. A tebetian slogan for lay meditators is "have no hope of fruition". For me, what happens is, every few weeks or so I'm blessed with an experience of pure presence. All I need to do is be walking in the neighborhood in the morning and randomly I'll experience pure bliss. It dissapears as soon as I start trying to analyze where it came from and how I can get it back. Or start getting desperate to hold onto it. Because in that moment desire enters the picture.
The task of meditation is very specific. Focus on the breath. No matter what your mind wants to do, what thoughts or emotions are coming up, focus on the breath. If you focus on trying to recreate the experience of bliss, you're distracted from the causes of bliss. the cause of bliss is concentration on an object. If you deviate from this cause by focusing instead on trying to get bliss through the mind's desires, you fail. (Or at least, i've failed every time so far). Bliss for me, has come on days when i'm relatively relaxed and expectationless before starting my meditation session. I may have only experienced flashes of it 2 or 3 times in the first 6 months of meditating, and honestly its possible that what i experienced was only a precursor state to true bliss.

Only to lose it all in a span of a year. recently have i realized this, it hurts really really hurts... But i guess i need to slowly put my dharma in a more harmonious way, on every single things that surrounds me, slowly, I will make it, we will make it folks

    Awesome video and conversation..
I may have joined late but I started it from the beginning to end.
    I love the meditation strategies..
Exercising for a half an hour every day isn't that bad so what's throwing another 20 minutes to sit down and meditate?

The part about the difficulty of the second transcendental expirience is so true. Once I did "The listener" meditation from Dr. K before bed and it was just something else. I felt like in my head I went to the outer space, it was so powerful I needed some time to go back to my normal plane of existence. And I never was able to repeate this experience

I am 32 and remain really anxious. I don't have the ability to face challenges head on and get nervous very easily. Since the last 2 years I have been living in constant fear (due to anything and everything). I am disturbing my parents also at this age as I am their only child. I haven't felt more helpless in my entire life.

Thank you so much for this video. I felt more validated than I expected when you spoke about what society wants us to want and how advertising and apps are designed to make you feel less than.
A couple years ago I decided to cut down social media apps on my cell phone and I find I don’t seek it out on other devices. RUclips is technically the only “social media” I use on a regular basis and I am SO much happier for it.
I suppose one way to I unconsciously practice being bored or being with myself is sitting in waiting rooms without looking at my phone or magazines. Sitting with myself in those moments is easier now. Thanks for a boost on my journey to wholeness 💕 Off to meditate (actually!) and be awesome at being bored.

1:37:29 might just have been the single best thing I've ever heard, when it comes to purpose and goals. I struggle with Pure OCD so badly that I have thought myself into a loop for the last 7 months of my life non stop everyday. But knowing my purpose doesn't have to be some extravagant job or mission and can simply be to be more compassionate or helping pick up the community is actually so good to hear. A lot of my friends struggle with knowing what their purpose is to and I think it's because they too expect that they need to do something big.
