    The hazard system sounds like the classic designers paradox: you want to make areas inaccessible or hard to go through so players feel rewarded for beating them, but you want everyone to be able to explore your content. Can't have both.

      Has anyone tried a "regions already explored counter" multiplied onto every new regions difficulty? Choosing the order, but keeping the curve. You could add between 0-1 depending on level of exploration each, so that travelling 10km east doesn't immediately make it unplayable by accident.

    • @Prometheus208
      @Prometheus208 3 года назад +12

      Breath of the Wild did this fairly well by requiring armor/potions/food to traverse cold areas and hot areas. Early on, it was hard to get these or enough of these to really explore those locations, but nothing was really stopping you from trying. Late game, you could just switch the armor set you are wearing, since those are harder to find than food.

    This looks like what you get when you have a team full of conflicting ideals.
    Like, you have the original "class matters" idea, but then someone comes along with the ever-popular "class should be more fluid, and maybe there shouldn't even be classes" idea, and the mistake is letting the two ideas meet in the middle, resulting in a lukewarm soup of compromises. And then letting this same thing happen across the board with other facets of game design.

      ahhh. this hurts my soul as im mainly a d&d and various "rpg (i use this term very loosely)" player and so much of what i devote my nerd rage to is ludonarritive dissonance and the conflicting desires of the mechanics focused people (who i would identify as) and the narrative people. i sit in the "choices have meaning, if that means they are rigid i dont care" camp but so many people want endless customization and crafting mechanics and gun mechanics and (insert thing here). in both tabletop games and video games it takes a lot. i devote more of my energy to tabletop as patching it is easier, currently trying to find a way to get an earlier edition feel which makes things more ridged and lethal, but so many people hate that. tldr, i wish people could just deal with small games with not to many mechanics and deal with "its not for you".

    The lack of animation cancelling is my biggest grievance with the game, since they added dialogue customization, especially as a melee build. You can’t cancel an attack to parry, and you can’t parry into another parry. So, if two attacks come at you quickly, you can parry the first, but not the second, since the parry animation can’t be cancelled.
    Other than that, I’m enjoying the game.

    • @lemonlordminecraft
      @lemonlordminecraft 3 года назад

      I wanna hit this with the classic and unhelpful "haha mad coz bad" or "git gud" but honestly, this is just a rare opinion. Usually people complain about too much animation cancelling in games as it leads to floaty combat with no real stakes or commitment, see Lords of the Fallen. If you don't have time to parry between attacks like that, I think it should be pretty clear you are not supposed to do that.

    • @BringItDon
      @BringItDon 3 года назад +4

      @@lemonlordminecraft I almost agree with you, but this game plays like it should have animation cancelling, and it feels weird that it doesn’t. I don’t mind when a game forces you to have repercussions for your actions, but it has to match the flow of the game. Lords of the Fallen has a much slower, methodical type of combat, where Biomutant has a faster, more fluid style.

      For my ps4 slim it can be a bit stuttery. BUT!!! I feel like this is partially because my husband accidentally stepped on my power cord and it turned my whole system off and caused a data corruption for Biomutant 🥲 it was an accident and I don’t hold it against him, but my console has acted strange ever since (like turning off by itself without being too warm or even giving the three warning beeps) my advice would be to make sure your “temporary cache data” is needed n proper order. This is just my experience with it, I do really think my frame rate issue is a combo of my husbands accidental turning-off-the-console, and the fact that I have the WORST luck with consoles!

    Took me about 40 hours for completely 100% the game. Few side quests are unfinissable and are left in the log although finished, which was a tad annoying, but no deal breaker. Also the 100% experience was quite boring after you hit level 50 as you won't be able to even feel good about leveling anymore. Max level in game like this, feels just mean.

    23:39 _OBJECTION!_ The throwing stars and the boomerang are also really good, because they make wung-fu comboes easier to do once you've memorized them.
    An example of this is that many of the boomerang's wung-fu attacks are actually homing, so you rarely miss your attacks.
    The throwing stars are better in that they're faster, but you have to aim them a bit more. Throwing stars, boomerang, and grappling hook all serve utilitarian functions.
    So it's unfair to say that the grappling hook is the only useful tribe weapon.

Was my favorite perk for awhile also strength and vitality can be increased without leveling up so in theory you can infinitely increase your melee and health with enough new game plus,s this can work for combos too via bandet camps so in theory you can unlock everything given enough time oh and with new game plus supposedly you get all the other classes perks making psi freak the only unique class in the long run for it's unique weapon I already have just about every skill combo and psi ability using just one Ng+ lastly pro tip: activate hover and spam flame dodge and BOOM you can now fly your welcome

    The game disappointed me within the first two hours. I absolutely despised the narrator and approach to dialogues. Hated the flashback sequence. Hated the combat and how it felt, both melee and ranged. The abilities felt so underwhelming. Hated how narrow and scripted those first two hours felt. **Hated** the "skill trees" from what I've seen of them, and really disliked the character creation and how looks were tied to stats. Not that they mattered at all.
    Just the regular dodging was enough to break the first big enemy, with my character getting stuck under its tail and the enemy AI completely turning off. Just trying to conduct regular combat in the subway section was enough to break something again, with enemy health and AI resetting whenever I moved just a bit too far from their spawn point. Even though "too far" was the other end of the room, easily reached with a couple dodges and Izuna Drop-ing the enemy.
    The absolute lack of polish in its most scripted segments was baffling, and I just couldn't comprehend how it could be so bad with the game's price and development time, which is like three years extra after the devs proclaimed everything to be finished.
    Honestly, I know that devs are people too, but that doesn't matter when the product is crap. I had the same feeling of utter disappointment with The Outer Worlds, where mechanics felt like an early-alpha test build and not only did the the game's visuals give me a huge headache with its awful chromatic aberration, but the story broke for me during regular gameplay.
    But at least Outer Worlds had the decency to at first leave me impressed with its very first location, hopeful that things will get even better (they didn't, things only got worse). Biomutant didn't even manage to do that. Its very first sections, which were supposed to feel tight and make me want to experience more of the game did the opposite. Felt like a loosely banged together mess with pretty visuals and nothing besides.

    It’s a fun, casual type of game. I don’t really notice most of the “glaring” issues pointed out. It’s a fun game to spend a couple of hours with every evening, to unwind. If you’re coming at this game from a competitive angle (i.e. online FPS type games), then yes, this game will seem like somewhat of a hot mess. It’s an easy game to get into, doesn’t require a lot of thought or effort to level up, and isn’t based on any existing IP. I think the combat is very Kung fu like. There are lots of enemies, and if you don’t use target lock, you attack the enemy nearest at the moment (much like in movies). It’s overall a fun game, perhaps not for “hard-core” gamers, but then this game was made by a development team of like 20 people, not 200, like most AAA games.

    I was so hyped for this game and I finished it in circa a week or two. BUT - at the halfpoint of the story ( I had almost 70 % of the sidequests finished without even following the main story yet and was basically god like with the dead-eye perk and dual wielding ) the game became so freaking boring and annoying. First I had to mute the narrator because the permanent repetition of quests, boring fights and his kinda snarky remarks started to make me really mad. After that I just wanted to finish the story and the game, which I did. My game crashed in the end fight and with both Karmic stats maxed out I finished the game. Annoyed, disappointed and kinda frustrated. Because I think this game has potential but they f***ed it up with to many stuff and a boring story. Sry for ranting so much. Great review. Liked your view on it.

    ranged weapons outclass melee weapons pretty early on and getting 100% crit chance is effortless to get just by addons that increases crit chance even if you didn't put a single point in luck
    Dead-eye is the best class only because it doubles your two handed ranged damage which with 100% crit chance and an auto rifle with homing missile takes down bosses in seconds
    The double ranged damage was nerfed to 1.25 damage but it's still really great

    I was prepared to hear this game get trashed but was actually pleasantly surprised to hear how fair this was. All the points were ones I totally agree with, and they weren’t trying to cast an overly negative light which would be very easy.
    I just love the design of the creatures and the mounts, the enemy variety is kind of lacking but the world is so beautiful and pleasing to explore, even if you’re just riding around on Snickels.
    Also light side has lightning hands and levitation, the latter of which seems useless but actually has insane movement when paired with the flame dash. It’s awesome

    If a crit doubles damage, then crit chance = flat dam increase. Mathematically speaking. (as long as one shot kills aren't a significant portion of your damage output, that is)
    100 + (.05 ? 100) = 100 + (.05 * 100) on average (? being chance/die roll)

    Imho best review of this game. It shows no real bias. I pretty much feel the same way; it is greatly flawed but has immense charisma and is quirky and enjoyable. I liken it to Knights of Redwall-meets-Borderlands with even more of a cartoon-ish zing. I am on my second character (Punchcat, first of his name) doing a strictly melee build, supplementing with tribal ranged (shrunken and bow, mostly) and it works great. I use the blaze gloves...who can resist Hokuto kitty flame fist?

    Another great review Jacob. I always drop whatever I'm doing, even when I'm at the office, to watch whenever I see and upload.
    Speaking of games developed by incredibly small teams, I'd be very curious to know your thoughts about a title called Cloudpunk.
    I feel like that game would fit onto your channel perfectly.

    I paid 60€ and played till the end doing most of the thing that could be done. Uninstalled the second i got the end title screen i didn't even consider doing the new game plus, i was so much disappointed. This game is worth 15€/$ max 20, nothing more. Don't buy it, wait for a massive sales and don't expect too much anyway, it'is not that good.
