17:00: Ha, yeah, to be fair, even for example me, who isnt a Cultist, thought it was a Prank at first and/or the Update had been Halved.
      I certainly thought that.
I mean, the Oceans and Seas alone, were so much emptier. Once, they were so much more Alive than now, but they all got removed.
I mean, even things that were in the game and were just so simple no one could even have a Reason to hate them, were removed: Like Pet Food for Slimes and Imps. In the Alpha, they could be tamed, but not anymore FOR NO REASON.
Who wouldnt think that is a Joke?
      Well, it wasnt. Wow.
You know, one could wonder if his Depression maybe made him wish we are depressed too, but let's be honest, that's a laughable Reason to ruin your own game. But even if that were the Case - WHAT WAS HIS WIFE DOING? Did she just let him delete the Updated Alpha in a Stroke of Madness, and let him start all over again?!? Where's his Family in all this? You know what game would mesh so well with Cube World? Terraria. The items and progression combined with the bosses would give Cube World a true progression system. Combined with the quests, lore, and fast travel today in the beta update of Cube World, would make the game a near masterpiece. Just make bosses locked to certain dungeons and exclusive items (like having a exclusive iron sword out of many item swords) behind special crafting recipes. It’s a rough, out of mind onto the table idea, but it could work so well

Kochlor Well terraria’s grind is mostly optional. And it being unfun is pretty subjective, as I personally enjoy the terraria grind, most essential items are obtainable through a good half hour of grinding, and items like the rod of discord are helpful, but if you don’t want it/need it, you don’t have to grind for it. Cube World is unfortunately very bare bones, even in the beta stage, and adding a simple crafting/better grind system would be a good step to a better game, because you still grind in the CW beta, but the gear is just pointless with region lock

I never played the game but from what you've told, this sounds like a classic case of feature creep and developer burnout. It's a trap that relatively new developers fall in all the time as a matter of fact, most of the job of scrum masters and product owners in software development is to prevent feature creep.
It sounds like this good looked at the feedback after the alpha and said, "fuck yeah, people loved my game's alpha! I'll add 50 different unique system and make the best game ever!" few years down the line, he ended up with half a dozen buggy barely working systems and he was already burnt out of the project. So he decided to just rip out the problematic parts and leave the working ones behind and release the progress in the hopes of people's reaction spurring him to action and removing the burnet out status.
Doesn't look like that happened. I wouldn't hold my breath for him to fix the game. He's probably sick and tired of looking at voxel graphics now.
Let this be a lesson for any indie developer. Even if you are 100% capable of developing the entire game by yourself, get another developer involved in the project. The othert dev doesn't have to be very good. Tbh, just a sounding board is all you need. But working on a project by yourself for years and years is a surefire way to get feature creep and also burnout.

      @MinishDude 4 года назад +2

The primary reason for that is.... replay-ability. In the Alpha, "infinite progression" was tangential, and once you got good gear there really was nothing left to do... end game was just killing bosses and grinding for slightly better gear. When you get 5-star gear in a biome, you're pretty OP compared to most mobs, so there would be almost no challenge. Now there is always a challenge, but little incentive to keep playing....
Pretty much, if a friend decides to do drop-in co-op when you go into a new region, even if you've invested 100s of hours into playing the only advantage you'd have is movement speed or lantern radius. You can't carry somebody if you're also in a new region. There is one notable exception to this that,:if you wanted to, you can grind for gear where the name ends with "+" that maintains it's power for all adjacent regions to the one you obtained it in. Then you could use that gear to farm for + gear in the neighboring regions, etc., and slowly expand your reach without much of a challenge.

It’s almost unbelievable someone could mess up so badly, someone could be so out of touch; I can’t get my head round it.
The alpha was great, fun, engaging and loved. All that was required was simple additions of more assets like enemies, bosses, items, animals, biomes, quests, spirit cubes, etc.
Like Minecraft, could add in portals to different dimensions or seeds as endgame. Or add more crafting, like being able to build a house in one of the cities or villages.
The alpha was 90% there and features like that could be added in over time, instead he spent years in secret removing EVERYTHING about the game that people loved? and for what? And why? It’s just mental.

I'm a year late but hopefully this helps. I am a solo indie developer of over 5 years now, project fatigues is a KILLER. The best way to avoid such a disaster like this is plainly not announcing the game/project until you have a very good an substantial basis to the game and a semi solid plan for execution post announcement. I have been working on my project for 2 almost 3 years and although I discuss it I never officially announce it as I unfortunately do not have a solid enough basis yet. This actually is the case due to changes in vision, my game has gone through 3 or 4 redesigns at this point and I needed to go though the reiterations to finally land on a concept I can roll with nearly without effort. Game dev in the early stages is hit or miss, trial and error. Be patient on announcing/ releasing into early access, best advice I could give to avoid another Cube World situation

I’m actually so depressed tho. I remember seeing this game, and wanting it when I was younger, because it looked like Minecraft. I never got the alpha, tho, because my parents wouldn’t let me because I was so young. Later, when I was older, I watched videos about this game, and it intrigued me so much. I never got the alpha tho, because I had other games on my mind. For so long, the game was at the back of my mind, my hype slowly building up, as I would daydream about it releasing when I got bored. Then, the title screen was revealed, and I was so hyped! Somehow I missed the final trailer, but I saw this video in my recommended. When it said tragedy in the title, my heart sank. I convinced myself that it said tragedy because of something else. But now... I know otherwise.
However, I don’t blame wollay, it’s just a damn shame.

FYI, the Artifact leveling system has already been done. Underrail's default game mode does it. You don't level off mobs, but off certain artifacts you find in the world from key enemies you kill/steal from or secrets you explore and loot. It also has classic fallout style leveling too if you choose that mode.

"Wollay is an honest guy" EHHHHHH... I'm not sure I would go that far. Honestly, his lack of communication makes it impossible to actually understand what happened here. Was it a scam? Was it anxiety? Was it just not caring about the project anymore? No one will know because he never says anything. Then people annoyingly defend his lack of communication. Look, I get social anxiety myself, quite badly, but if you want to start publishing work to a public forum you need to form some level of communication competency. I think Wollay has the talent and skill to make a good game, but he lacks the spine and willpower to deal with the same public he intends to release it to. Just another tragedy I suppose. Its just a shame it took 6 years of his life and everyone else's to realize it.

I don't defend his lack of communication, i blame him for trying to do it alone, imagine the sheer amount of content if he asked his community to design voxel weapons or enemies, he would be able to gather as much designs as trove did, and it was an amazing idea.

It was a scam. When you promise to do something, you have to do it unless if not doing it poses more dangers. Being depressed isn't an excuse to make hundreds of thousands of people suffer and have their hopes and dreams wrecked because of your actions. Releasing the alpha for free, adding good mod support and leaving the indie scene would have been much better than making the game worse.

@@friendlyperson8016 I understand what you're saying, and I won't try to defend Wollay at this point, however it does seem a little emotionally charged. I do believe it's a scam, whether he intended it to be or not, but I'd hardly say he ruined hopes and dreams, or made people suffer. It is a video game at the end of the day, and there will be more to come in the future. Also, releasing the product for free, spending the resources to add modding support and then just leaving as if to commit a form of virtual seppuku is just not business logical in any way. The goal of CW alpha is to explore the open world with your friends with actual progression in leveling and gear upgrading, while the beta version entirely deletes those concepts and the game now punishes you for going to a new region. The goal of RoR on the other hand, is to experience progression throughout the game itself as you progresses, getting stronger items and leveling up from one dungeon to another. Not to mention the game doesn't punshes you for going to a new "region".

Sour Nachos except it just doesnt make any sense at all in a game like cubeworld. Maybe if the regions/biomes had drastic changes between them (like for example its desert right here and the next biome is suddenly a large cyberpunk city) and it is backed up by lore (such as worlds are converging blablabla) then maybe, JUST maybe, this region lock thing wouldve fit the game and it wouldve been totally unique as well. But no, this is cubeworld, a game advertised way way back them to be an openworld sandbox rpg. And having your gear uselees when crossing borders just doesnt make any sense in the world of cubeworld. Why does it disappear? There are no freaking lore or way to describe it. It simply just becomes useless. Not to mention no freakin mention of it on game logs or whatever. It’s just... turned useless. And also it doesnt fit cubeworld thematically and mechanically. Theres this grassland and next biome is a desert. I can see the blocks changing colors to match the next region (albeit LESS and LESS GRADUAL as in alpha). So when my gear becomes useless af because what? I just reached the desert? Is that it? Not to mention, once you finish a zone, youve basically done everything the game has to offer. Every region is just a different coat of paint. I wont grind for another 8 hrs if its as boring as the game. But if wollay really did want region lock to be a thing, if he is, somewhat not a lazy developer, he couldve made every region thematically different, each feeling the different and playing different. But no, he chose to incorporate it in cubeworld....

You can then use them in the skill tree to increase damage. Movement and other stuff. My opinion that would be great. Will make it really unique than other rpgs.
