I totally agree with you about Brent Smith's vocals. He hasn't lost a step and still has one of the most powerful voices EVER in modern music not just rock. Totally underrated.

Absolutely love Shinedown. Completely agree about Brent’s vocals. Most underrated singer out there. I hope, for him, that that changes one day. He’s such a genuinely nice guy. All of them are.

I was in my early teens when this came out. I remember just blaring it as loud as I could to drown out all the thoughts. Hindsight, I was struggling with PTSD from childhood trauma but in the moment all I knew was that I was hurting. I absolutely love this song. Also, I agree, their version of simple man is by far my favorite.

I saw Shinedown here in Alaska during a summer where we had endless fires and no rain. During the smokey concert it randomly started pouring down rain (We were outdoors), and Brent Smith's reaction was so joyous at the arrival of the rain, as were we, but it felt like a religious experience... Literally one of the best concerts I've experienced.

"Ashes of another life" would be your earlier life. That's why he goes on to say "no reason to accept the way things have CHANGED"

I love this song. It sounds like today's generations dark song that gives them hope and gets them out of depression. In the 80's, those songs that got me out of a bad place were Fade to Black by Metallica and How Can I Laugh Tomorrow When I can't Even Smile Today by Suicidal Tendencies. I can totally see this being one of those types of songs.

I remember hearing this song when it came out. I never got too into Shinedown, but I absolutely love this song. Fun fact: I got to meet them at Uproar festival about 10/12 years ago. It was a “meet & greet” so it was a very brief interaction. Still pretty cool. ✌🏻❤️
P.S. Cedric, you’re “sneaky” comment did not go unnoticed and I agree with you. 😉

This had helped me through when I had went through 2 divorces and lost of one's and I originally thought he talking about staring down the barrel of a record player playing a 45

You should definitely go on the Nf journey(well worth it)!! But before that you should do a reaction to the Shinedown live acoustic performance in Kansas City because it’s equally as perfect. That performance and nf’s music is like hearing Eddie Van Halen for the first time.

I don’t mind pausing. It’s a reaction/review. You’re giving us you’re thoughts as you hear the song. Just go back a few seconds like you have been doing

My interpretation of "swimming through the ashes of another life" is that the life he had envisioned is no longer possible because of his losses. His heart break has made ashes of all the potential he saw.

I know this is 8 months old. but this song is not about suicide.
“It’s misunderstood in a lot of ways,” Smith told American Songwriter. “And I’ll never forget when the song came out, it was our second single from the album and it was banned from MTV because of the video and lyric subject matter. And I was like ‘why? When it actually had nothing to do with a gun’. The 45 was a metaphor for the world and ‘staring down the barrel of a 45’ was about staring down at this planet and what it throws at you, how you have maneuvered through your life.”
